Nice video. I’m picking up my fifth wheel today and I was scared about how to do this…but with this video a feel a relief 😃😃😃😃
Thinking of buying a 5th wheel and video was very informative.
Very informative and professionally done video. Thank you so much for posting this. I feel a lot more informed about hooking up my new 5th wheel. Not so intimidating now.
I've done gooseneck and bumper pulls my whole life but this helped SO much for our new 5th wheel, thanks!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the video. First video that talked about unhooking requirements with a gap. Makes sense to me. How about making a video on " how to perform a tug test" properly.
My 2 cents---
Great video!
I would add though (because I have replaced both front jacks!) that to save any pressure on the front jacks ---
when hooking up;
1. Make sure the wheel chocks are in place and tight--that you have backed against them---applying pressure---during the unhitching process.
2. as he said in the video, make sure the trailer hitch plate is well below the top of the truck hitch plate--(2-3 inches)--so that as you back under ---the backward pressure is on the chocks and the trailer is raised---releasing pressure on the jacks.
If the chocks are loose and the trailer moves backwards that is applying pressure on the jack leg and foot---mine bent enough that they would not retract and had to be changed--after 4 years-----thankfully insurance paid for both.
Are the chocks needed if your basically on level ground?
Great detail!
Excellent presentation!
I must agree though that a tug test should be conducted unless your plan is to only connect and disconnect without moving the RV or retracting the landing gear. Confirming an adequate connection to the kingpin that is secure it paramount!
Great video, very informative and straight to the point. Thank you Sir!
Well done, very helpful. I've owned pop ups, travel trailers and motorhomes, but am about to purchase my first fifth wheel. This video was well worth the watch.
I may have missed it, caulk the wheels of the trailer front and back. When the ground is level and it is straight in an out is great but when it is not, the fun begins...
Great explanation about fifth wheel hook 🪝 and unhook 👍🏼
Good video. I’m a newbie to 5th wheels but not towing in general. I’ll watch this a few more times. Then off to a parking lot to practice turning.
That's the way to make a video! Great job. To the point.
very helpful video. your simple explanation makes it easy to understand. Thanks
Very descriptive! Excellent video!
Perfect description. Thanks for this video
Excellent video! Can you send him over to Giant Recreation World and educate their folks on how to teach their customers this skill? They simply take your check, walk around the unit with you in about 5 minutes, pat you on the back and say goodbye. God help if you need to call back with a question. They simply cannot remember your name. Lesson learned by this former customer.
Once you brown your pants once unhitching and realize you didn't choke wheels you'll never do it again lol
Good video. I have the companion 5th wheel hitch and I learned something from this. I have never pulled camper up high enough to see the gap. I obviously have been doing it wrong. Also, I have seen people hook up and unhook without having wheels chocked.
I'm a newbie at this. Thank you for the information!
Good Morning. Thank you this is great info. I see I have been making some mistakes on my B&W Companion. Thank you again. Jack
Very good explanation!
Thank you. This is not "just" like a Tractor trailer as I initially imagined but of course their similar.
Excellent instruction and video
Thank you for the video, I'm a new 5th wheel owner and i was a little apprehensive about hooking up and making sure that it was locked in place... The video gave me all the questions i was asking g myself.
Thx again 😊
Very helpful, thank you.
Excellent video. Thank you.
Thanks for this training video!
Many thanks for this excellent and helpful video
Great video and very helpful. Thx
Great Video. Thanks.
Great video.... very informative
Great video! Very informative!
Great Video. I made the unhooking mistake yesterday.
great video and demos !
thanks. in the market for a camper . . . this was very helpful. thank you.
Very informative. Makes sense
Very helpful video. Thank you!
Awesome video!
Thank you! So many of us get these hitches installed and take off without instruction. (Same with the Lippert leveling system)
This was great content, I just bought a 5th wheel and a new Chevy Duramax to pull it.
thanks for this video
Excellent. thank you
My new 5th wheel hitch is a B&W but this great video would be relevant even if it was a different brand.
Perfect tutorial.
Good information
The B&W when just at the right height will unlatch. Take some load off and watch your truck. Pull the pin and move the handle back then watch it unlatch as you you raise it a tad more. Best 5th wheel hitch on the market IMO! B&W rocks!
Excellent!
This is a great video I just got one of those fifth wheels given to me and it's a big one like that I don't know who in the world I'm going to have to haul this thing cuz most of the people around here where I live they don't have fifth wheel trucks guess I'll have to call the pros thank you for the video very very interesting and informing
The best video friends
I will use this video, on my first toe. Great descriptive video. Thanks
that might hurt!
good stuff thank you
thanks. good video.
Very nice - Makes me feel less afraid to upgrade to a 5th wheel!
Thanks 👍👍👍👍
thank you
I see why you say drop the trailer like. I’m a semi driver I don’t lower my legs all the way down. Because I’d rather my truck pick up the trailer. But your method works it’s just different than mine.
Thanks
I'm a gooseneck fan personally, I've seen fifthwheels literally sliding off the hitch and crushing the truck bed and that scares me, I don't like the thought of paying $80,000 for the truck and $100,000 for the fifthwheel only to destroy them, but I do like the video, it's helpful for people who aren't paranoid like me 😄
Where do you put the break-away cable? Good video!
He should have had wheels chocked or trailer and fifth wheel plugged into each other set trailer brake when going in or out. This is especially important in sites that might. Not be so level. Also when hooking up for real all slides should be in.
Some already mentioned that no tug test. Also did not connect breakaway line.
Let’s talk about your bed conversion I’m in search of a low bed rail without converting to standard flatbed.
Would you have or could you make a video of unhitching a Pull right 5th wheel hitch? I have a regular puck pull rite 5th wheel hitch. It is the biggest pain in the rear to disconnect. Maybe just maybe I am doing something wrong. But who knows? Sometimes it unhooks very easy. Other times it has taken me over 30 minutes of up / down, pull forward / back up, etc. I am not a noob, and have many years experience towing trailers. But this is my first 5th wheel. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Please advise where on the Companion to attach the breakaway/emergency trailer brake cable?
I have one of these and the other day it wouldn't lock on to the RV's tried 2.they hooked right up to my son's truck. Wonder why
Where do you recommend the breakaway line be connected?
i have a B & W hitch and when im back into a spot, lower the front legs, then take the weight off the truck, I open the handle to open the jaws on the hitch, there is no resistance. is that it safe to pull out? like will the jaws open up as i pull away? I know when i feel resistance on the handle and open it, the jaws open up.
Excellent !!!!
can you rent the part in the back of the truck that holds the 5th wheel because I only want to haul the 5th wheel for one day
What’s a keenpeen?
Good video, however you forgot the most important part...tug test.
admorris11 yes you are right. Visually Inspect and then a little tug to insure the jaws are locked.
Appreciate the feed back!!!
Yes. The tug test with the jacks down enough to keep a trailer/truck impact from occuring.
Yup
My rv is a Montana 2020 5th wheel I think 40ft Im trying to get a truck if I get a f250 diesel not a dually do you think is better a dually
Can I leave my 2019 gmc tailgate on when towing
You don’t recommend a tug test to ensure proper coupling?
What about electeical/trailer brake connection cord?
Who makes the bed on that truck?
Swaying is due to lateral forces created by Trailer upon the tractor, and they cannot be avoided. No matter what hitch you do the swaying exist and is dangerous. Only 5th wheel may avoid swaying, such a gooseneck trailer, which is ugly and require to modify the tractor. I invented a new trailer which use a dolly converting the bumper traction into 5th wheel traction and will not sway at all.
Dont forget the tug test
New to 5 Th wheels. To unhook you have only the front jacks down? When you see the gap/space on hitch you drop it down again on hitch. How does that relieve the weight on truck bed?
You remove the weight by raising it where you see the gap, then you lower it just until it touched. There's no weight on the plate just touching. Don't let it down hard on it, just until it touches.
Are there any safety chains involved with a 5th wheel? With a gooseneck?
On a 5th wheel no, on a gooseneck yes....however, check your local laws, as there are I think 3-4 states that do require safety chains with a 5th wheel....there are kits out there for them, however, most states due to the way the hitch/latch mechanism works on a 5th wheel, it is one of the most safe and secure couplers so it don't require the chains....
Basically the same procedure to hook up a trailer on a semi
Tug test
don't forget to chock your trailer wheels first
Looks like you forgot to mention about hooking up safety brake cable and 7 pin wire.
You did't do a pull test before retracting the jacks, and putting all the weight on the truck. :(
No mention of chocking the wheels before unhooking, just because the jacks are down does not mean the trailer will not move, especially if your on any kind of slope. Always play it safe and chock one side in front and behind the wheels.
Forgot to tug test
“JAWS”
You should remove your ball hitch receiver if not using it. That is an offense is some areas.
Where is your accent from? Sounds half Alabama half European…
May I kindly suggest this video be redone. Four important things were not shown;
1. Tug test
2. Electrical cable not plugged in
3. Emergency Brake cable not connected to the truck.
4. Signal lights, running lights, and brake lights not checked
Thank you.
Excellent!
