I think it’s worth it if you’re smart about it. The miles can get high, and that’s the main problem. But something to consider: the block time shown may not be the actual time spent, and typically isn’t. Very often you’ll get home an hour early, maybe more. The latest I get home is right at the end of the block, or just before the end of block time. When I look back on hours I spent away from home for the last two blocks I took, for example, I made about $40 an hour.
But again, the miles can be quite high. You have to take the good with the bad because you don’t know what to expect. I’ve been screwed in a block before. But I’ve also had incredible blocks. A 4 1/2 hour with highest pay rate they offer in my area, furnished 2 hours early, and miles were lower than usual. Some people even go home with pay without having to do a route. You just don’t know what you’ll get.

So if you don’t know what you’re going to get then it can’t be worth it? You might as well start your own business like walking someone’s dog, or doing yard cleaning, and charging $100 for two hours! One location no wear and tear on your vehicle and you know what you getting! And hire pay!

On Friday I picked up from the DCX2 warehouse (less than a mile from home) and ended up with all the deliveries being clustered in a small 1/2-mile-by-1/4-mile area in Rancho Santa Margarita. Only paid $67.50 but pay per mile was over the top - still had almost a full tank of hydrogen in my Toyota Mirai when the block was completed. The pay per mile factor might explain why the gross pay was less.

Best motto I’ve found for flex - “set it and forget it”. No packages left behind lol. Don’t get me wrong, if it’s an obviously difficult delivery and you can’t leave the package ANYWHERE near the customer, don’t do it. I mean you really could, it’s not a big deal at all except for the customer. But also be courteous

I did my first block Sunday night and it went okay, with some caveats. It's funny, before heading out I watched a couple of your other Amazon Flex videos, including the one in which you picked up a block with only four packages but a ton of driving time. That wound up being the sort of route I got. Four-hour block, $84, 14 packages, just under 120 miles by the time I got back to the warehouse with my one return. My earnings to mile ratio wound up being about the same as yours too, right around 70 cents. Not ideal. The miles were so long because it was to a couple neighboring towns, one of which is known for having some especially sketchy areas. Not super fun to deliver to late at night.
I briefly worked at the post office as a City Carrier Assistant, so parcel delivery isn't too foreign of a concept to me. Sundays were known as "Amazon Sundays" with only CCAs coming in (career carriers don't work Sundays) to deliver Amazon packages only all day. That was actually my favorite day of the week, 'cause honestly, mail delivery kinda sucks in comparison to packages. You wouldn't think it, but bending stacks of letters all day to fit into mailboxes messes up your hand. Sure, there are lifting concerns with packages, but I found it easier to throw on a back brace and practice proper lifting technique than somehow avoid the repetitive muscle strain of delivering mail. I'd wake up with shooting pains in my thumb.
So yeah, I'd probably go back to Amazon Flex for another block. $21/hour seems like the base for every block here. Hopefully I don't get the same route or a similarly remote route next time. Although now I'll have that anxiety hanging over my head every time I take a block, which I don't like. Flex is only the second gig app I've tried so far after doing Uber Eats over the weekend. Finally got approved for DoorDash yesterday, so I'm going out on that tonight. Kind of just trying to sample and get activated on as many apps as possible so I have more options and can figure out my personal preference. Roadie looks like it could be a viable option for me too. Not every order looks worthwhile, but at least there seems to be enough transparency ahead of time for you to make that call.

I've been trying really hard to find the benefits of flexs but how can I possibly tell if I'm making any money if I don't know where or how far it's sending me. There is nothing more demoralizing for me than finishing a route only to realize ill have to drive 2 hours to get home, especially when I have to stop and get gas on the way.

  • @Longsen
    @Longsen Před rokem +10

My long in-depth experience with Amazon Flex so far.....
I started 3 weeks ago, and the app is so janky, I've had so many issues with the app. One time I had to return packages back to the warehouse, which I did, and 3 days later it was still telling me to return those packages. Also, one time after completing a block, the itinerary wouldn't go away until the next day, so I was unable to accept new blocks. Their 1-click access doesn't always open doors, it's probably only worked for me about 50% of the times, so if I'm dropping off to apartments, a lot of times I'm stuck outside. Also, their map just sucks, one time it had me exit the hwy just to get back on at the next ramp, other times it'll have me go around a block for no reason, & it doesn't account for closed ramps or traffic jams. Wish it was like other delivery apps that just uses Google Maps.
My favorite deliveries are definitely Whole Food's or retail stores which has always been GNC for me (not sure if they have others), because they're usually 2hr blocks but I can get it done in like 30min to 1hr, & then I'll just go do GrubHub afterwards until my Amazon 2hr block is done when I'll be able to accept new blocks again. There's been times where I've gone to Whole Food's & they were missing bags of groceries, so I'll call Driver Support & they'll tell me not to deliver anything, & that I'll still be paid. The Whole Food's & retail stores are definitely the easiest.
For the warehouses, I wish Amazon would account for what kind of car you have. I thought that's the whole reason they ask for your car model & size. I have a coupe only, but the first time I did a warehouse delivery, I only had 4 packages on a 3hr block. I got it done in like 30 min because the houses were all in the same area, so it was sweet to get paid for 30 minutes only. The 2nd time I did a warehouse delivery, it was not fun though. I had like 30 packages, all downtown while it was snowing. The packages filled my car up so much, literally front passenger seat, back seats, & trunk. It was not fun being downtown, having to find parking, walking through high-rise apartments, & as I said earlier the 1-click access doesn't always open doors. Also, the worst part was, my block was 7pm-10pm, yet they wanted me to deliver to 3 businesses that were obviously already closed by those times, so I had to drive those packages back to the warehouse. All of this made a 3hr block turn into 4-5hrs. I was furious & tried to get extra pay from Amazon, they wouldn't budge. My 3rd & 4th times delivering warehouse wasn't bad though. On my 3rd time, I got to facility & the app said to "Wait while you're deliveries are being gathered, it should not take any longer than 30 min," so I waited 3 minutes & got notified saying that there was nothing to deliver but I'll still get paid, so I got paid $70 for waiting 30 minutes.
Amazon Fresh (a warehouse for Amazon groceries) deliveries are a no for me as well. I tried it one time & refuse to do it again. I had 40 bags of groceries, but only like 5 stops, one stop had 20 bags. Some of these bags are pretty heavy, so just imagine having to take 20 bags to a doorstep by yourself. It's quite a workout, I'd much rather do Whole Food's deliveries because it's usually 5-15 bags only, not as heavy & less customers & can be done much faster.
My main gripe about Amazon Flex is that the app just sucks. It's crazy because Amazon is such a big company & the Flex app has been around for 7 years, but their app isn't as well designed, made, or user-friendly as other delivery apps. It just messes up way too much from my experience.

I do flex in Pittsburgh. I really like it. I mainly work out of the sewickley warehouse, I stay away from coraopolis because I’m not risking going to Ohio or WV. I’ve been doing it for 2 months now and I’ve finished 100% of my blocks an hourly early. There’s been a handful of times that I got 1-9 stops for a 3 hour block which is nice but I’ve finished 100% of the time early. I love it and will probably stay doing it on the side.

Unlike the warehouses which are 10-25 miles away from my house and I usually get sent 25-30 additional miles away. Usually an easy 80-90 total miles by the time I get home. I tested it out by waiting until that time and then dropping the block within those 15 minutes thet they give you and it seemed to show the location every time. Only thing I'm not sure of is if you zoom out, it seems to show the number of packages I'm guessing and for a 3:30 block, it showed 50 every time. Maybe it's a block with less time because the delivery is closer to eachoher and ones with further drive get longer hour blocks but still same amount of packages.

Whole Foods runs are much different then logistics (warehouse). At whole foods you are going to drive much farther as far as miles driven. You may go up to 45 miles away and go to 1-5 different cities for the route. On average I go to 2-3 different cities per route. Also you do less stops such as 4-14 stops per route. Also the routes are 2 hr routes usually for about $44 depending on market.

I live in ct so it may differ but you mentioned going over your hours while delivering out here and mind you I used to deliver in cola sc as well and never went to support about going over but in ct they'll pay for your allotted time you went overtime. It happened to me 2 times in the last 2 weeks one time was an hour the other time was 2 hours but I also think it had to do with the way the warehouse gave me packages I had multiple warehouse mistakes such as delivering back and forth to the same towns and they were 5 different towns each 20 min from each other and had a couple packages with 2 stickers on them so when I scanned it scanned for my route when it wasn't actually my route package and I dropped it off to customer only to have to turn around when realizing it and bring the customer the right package but I think sometimes they will pay you for over time but make sure you stay on top of driver support and let them know what's going on on your route so you have documentation I also record my own phone calls and take pictures on my own and then sometimes I'll send a follow up email if I don't hear back within 24hrs and I'll also cc escalations just thought I'd let that be known for everyone.

Flex is my favorite side hustle. My area specifically anyways. I've tried other areas but none compare to mine. We started doing 3am-6am shifts and they can pay anywhere from 80-135 for a "3 hour shift" but 3 hour shifts only take me about 1.5 hours to complete. So sometimes I average 90 per hour. On the low end I average 50 per hour. Typically only work two shifts per day though. Getting 3 shifts in 1 day can be difficult sometimes due to competition and paying attention to the app at the right times to accept high paying blocks when they appear. Either way, flex for my area is extremely worth it 🤙

I'll pull up to a house to make a delivery and it wont let me complete the delivery because the highlighted circle is behind their house in the woods. WTF. Not to mention the routes are terrible and send you way out into the country. Its super sketch at night because you cant see house numbers, its hard to navigate, and you are rolling up to someone's doorstep dropping packages off and taking a picture which at night looks all types of sketch because half the time these ppl dont know what you are doing on their property due to wives ordering packages, etc. Ive only had 1 block go smooth out of probably 15. Almost got eaten by a huge dog once too

well, i just had a $90 3 hour route that ended up taking 4, plus had to return a few packages to warehouse because of closed businesses not having somewhere i can leave the package and no one to receive. the last block i did before this one i got done 30 minutes early. I did pick the block up only 2 hours before it started. gonna keep on trucking. so far its not bad. I hope there isnt a penalty for finishing late because i really dont think that block should have been labeled for 3 hours. granted there was also construction going on some of the roads too.

You have no idea what you're getting into either way, so yeah, I'll take the shorter shift with greater pay.. especially considering I have other apps I can log into & immediately get orders! I took pics of the packages while on my shift, at my house and when I dropped it off. I didn’t want to get blamed for stealing items. It was a complete nightmare. @davidinabundance6801 it depends on what warehouse you pick up at. A logistics warehouse. You're done when you finish. For whole foods or amazon fresh they can assign more stops if you have more than 30 mins left on your timeslot. For those two you are eligible for tips (they appear after 24 hrs ish) so for those it's potentially in your interest to go back. Those also generally deliver in a smaller radius than packages.
