- What is monkeypox, the viral infection that has been recently detected across several countries like the U.S., U.K., Portugal and now possibly Canada? Where does it come from and how contagious is it? What are the symptoms and how does it spread?
Jimmy Whitworth, a professor of international public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine answers these questions, discussing the possible reasons for the outbreak and the protection against it.
While the global cases of monkeypox are causing alarm among public health officials as the illness has rarely been seen outside of west and central Africa, experts say it's unlikely to spread like COVID-19.

The difference is that monkeypox has been around for decades.
With the amount of quarantine and isolation, it makes little sense that this can spread more than it has in the past.
Except that most of those restrictions were being eased and of course there would be a surge due to latent demand. None the less, the world has been transitioning from almost no travel to rapidly increasing travel as resources and logistics permit so problems with travel will of course be more noticeable. Having said that, the curious bit is that the cases in Canada and many of the cases in Europe could not be correlated with travel. The current wide spread outbreak is just inconsistent with what we historically know of this disease, that may just be because the world is very much disrupted and changing at this time but we need to really sort out why this outbreak is so different from previous outbreaks of this disease.
