- Steve Vai duels with John Popper at the House of Blues. Some jaw dropping harmonica playing. Amazing guitar playing too. The 'owned' in the title of this video serves no purpose other than to attract attention to some fine musicianship. I'm sure a few sensitive guitar players will take the title personally.... but.... really just take it on the chin and enjoy some fantastic improvisational skill.

The only things that got owned in this video was the audiences' minds.
Total head popping moment, a.k.a John Popper moment. See? 🤯
Check out John doing no woman no cry with Ziggy. I can almost guarantee a smile.
Nobody was "owned" here. It's not about one outshining the other, it's about them both being able to shine. It's just two musicians who appreciate each others music and talent jamming together having a great time.
Nobody ever reads the description. But the click bait does work. I'm glad people get to hear/see this awesome musical moment.
@@asjarrett Admitting that it's clickbait doesn't make you any less of a d-bag for doing it.
@@domdecosa thank you for putting me in my place.
aww cmon brother we know were seeing 2 LEGENDS do their thing. Let the Harp players have their day lol
@@asjarrettGot pissed for you showing us something cool. You got some nerve, doing that to us.😂
I never realized he has a really amazing grasp of polyrythms. Started listening to his other stuff after hearing this. The "Hook" solo fooled me.
Ain't nobody owning nonone. This is people feelin the blues and loving on life.
Both amazing!
I have like 25 years of blues traveler to catch up on. 😏
This is complete chaos!
As guitarist who was inspired to play by Randy Rhoads and Fn loves shred John Popper is one of my heros. Dude shreds the F out them harmonicas...
The man does with his lungs, what Vai does with his fingers... Of _course_ Vai got owned...
🐐
Epic description
John Popper's ammo belt is full of Snickers bars.
I bet he could even pop a snickers solo out of them.
I don’t know who’s doing the owning but someone’s doing the owning
John popper is the best! He owns everybody!
he definitely got owned!!
When did this video get recorded?
Brooklyn Bob
"You can't have the lead in a band be the harmonica"
John Popper: "hold my beer"
Lots of harp players play lead in blues. Most people know harmonica from rack players like Dylan or Neil Young. Here is Jason Ricci playing an extended solo.
czcams.com/video/NdUkGV7pGzg/video.html
I'd love to see Popper and Jason trading riffs.
Literally nobody says that.
Great lung capacity on that guy
Dan Ackroyd voice cameo?
Love John for the gun running and giving a scare to our ass leaders. Then did his prison time with respect and wasn't a snitch
Bitchin’ !
Crossroads 2.0..except its an an actual bonafide crazy musician..and not Ralph Machio
Music is a mission not a competition but yeah if the devil was judging this particular session Popper would have edged him out but I doubt Vai would have just given up like he did when he repeated the same note and looked back at Popper like come on man your killing me with eternal damnation for the loser. Or perhaps I should stop smoking so much of this shit right here.
Guys...JUST THANK GOD and JESUS..its not techno shit....raw talent that we are blessed to hear....
That is not a fair fight.
Owned .. yes!!! Steve is a pretentious wash out
What kind of harmonica is that and how can he even play that. How can a harmonica sound like that.....
Hohner Special 20 - one in each key, and he does have a modded mic that feeds into effects pedals so he can put some effects on.
You are highly immature for the title of this video. I'm not the biggest Steve Vai fan but they were both ripping it up.
Read more than just the title.
No “owning”, just two masters having fun.
There might have been a short term lease in there…😂
Well said
Damn... They jam so well together. He was told a harmonica shouldn't be played like, he sure as hell showed them.
WOOOOWWW! This is just awesome! I've never seen this video before. It's great to see Steve Vai blues away! John Propper is just killing it!! Greatness!
2 OUTSTANDING musicians gettin it on and hittin on ALL cylinders.................awesome
the delivery, the delivery is everything regardless of instrument, ya feel
Dale Springhetti Yes
No... I don't..
"delivery"? What are you actually saying?
Wow absolutely brilliant I cAnt beleive they played together two of my favorites...genious level...
Whats scary is at this time john was 200lbs over weight.. a chain smoker.. and still had better lungs than most free divers lol
I've searched for this for years! My god my mind is just as blown as the night I first watched it on tv!
Just rad!!
Wow john popper is the man and I've played guitar for 30 years steve is always good but popper is just outright impressive. Good show boys!
Steve Vai is amazing ,and so is Popper, the music world shouldn't be treated as a competiton, there can be MANY winners on stage here in this world, andif there are many winners on stage at the same time, our ears win even more ;)!
There's no owning going on here
The absolute best
Agree. Popper can play the heck out of that harmonica!
Insane!
Por diosssssss !!! Nunca lo escuche a este tema.....
owned? Seriously, They are both equally amazing on their respective instruments. Imho.
Fan of Both.
Saw Steve Vai Twice, blew me way! Played tight. Seen Mr E.VH, very inebriated at the time, not his A-Game. All a long time ago.
Imagine going to a Steve Vai concert
I don't know if he got owned. It's pretty impossible for Steve Vai to get owned in general but they were both pretty amazing.
I thought this was an incredible performance by both of them. Magic.
buckethead owns Vai any day of the week!
Vai himself admitted that Frank Zappa owned him. He used to give him things to play that he could not manage even when Frank demonstrated.
Whoa..
Beast MOOODE
I agree!
Nobody ever owns an awesome guitar player like Steve Via. Hopper is an awesome harp player but i also really like the slower harp players too like Kim Wilson. If you want to hear someone who has been playing this fast style while John Popper was walking around in diapers listen to an old school master Sugar Blue. Sugar Blue played harp with The Stones on the song Miss You. Sugar Blue is awesome and has been around along time.
Totally Jim! "Sugar Blue on Airship 38" -- owns Popper and Popper knows it 'cause he eludes to Blue but Blue is making total use of extension notes and at speed that is double Popper without sounding like speed. Sugar Blue is a master of the ethic, "Accuracy before Speed, Speed is the byproduct of Accuracy". Even at top speed, you can hear that critical separates each note, blows your head off, melts the face and then staples it inside your head so that you never forget again, "Accuracy before Speed, Speed is the byproduct of Accuracy"
pfft..This was nothing shy of joy and wonder. Nobody got owned. We all got a rare treat.
Title is just to attract attention.... see description.
@@asjarrett Fair enough. Doesn't matter anyway. Great video!
@rwblackwell I agree. But the harmonica player is more impressive because amazing guitar players are ten a penny yet good harp players are few and far between.
What year is this? Badass👍🏼😎👍🏼
id like to see something totally out of the box..... like tosin abasi and popper rip together on stage for a set. in the blues medium im sure abasi would get owned on pure feel but if they did the set list right there could be some really interesting interplay there i think.
@rwblackwell Yes i agree with that.
I dont think guitarists as talented as Steve Vai are ten a penny
I agree. More like ten a fifty dollar. :)
Randomness Amen!
Absolutely! It would be amazing to see John with the likes of Robin Ford or Eric Clapton. Jeff Beck or Eric Johnson or ALL of them! Lol.
john needs to play a powerbender
Why did it end so soon? Steve had to have ended that one. John kicked some serious ass out there. His lung capacity must be larger than five of my breaths. What a stout feller.
Crazy that I've never come across this. Also agree with the consensus, Steve Vai can and will never be "owned" except by maybe the devil himself
He was owned by the karate kid once...and the devil was actually on his side. Lol :)
So, something I've wondered for near 30 years now.... who is the world's second best harmonica player?
Sugar Blue
The title is designed to attract attention.
Everybody knows steve vai is a great player.
I'd like to introduce you to john popper who extends himself quite admirably through a different instrument.
@asjarrett Ok. I totally get your point that there are a greater number of guitarists profiled on youtube and in every other form of media compared to the great "harp" players out there. BUT I don't think that fact proves that Steve is being, or will ever be owned. I agree that John Popper is one of the greatest, as is Stevie Wonder, Huey Lewis, Darrell Mansfield, and Prevost Gervais. The fact that John is performing with Steve Vai shows me that they are equally talented.
This is fucked up. They sure as shit don't make em like they used to.
I don't care what year it is. Gee wiz i just think it's swell to keep the old phrases alive and kicking by using them. The same with old fashioned manners.
True, Vai is a unique talent.
Yep, taking a solo out of blues is great versatility fpr a guitarist.
Just like Al Roker was a better weather man
guitar
Psychotic Panic Attack I disagree.
Jake 3752
harmonica is more soulful cuz ur using the inside of your body to create sound
Psychotic Panic Attack Nevermind, read it the other way. I'm a harmonica player lol
robot
Not so much "owned" but "head cut" since Vai tried "cuttin heads" with one of the top 10 harp players in the world, but what the fuck do I know,I'm stupid
JASSON RICCI also should be included. .......
And Paul butterfield
Sugar blue and billy branch as well
Owned? Interesting...
owned only to attract attention.
Vai can play anything....except blues.
J'Mac ! that's the case with a lot of metal guys. vice versa too, im a bluesy player and i can't play metal to save my life
Please link us to the video where you show us how its done.
@@danholmes5309 irts called....wait for it.......an opinion.....people have them....you do to.....did you know that?......look in to it.....
owned? nah. popper is fantastic though. yup
Owned my arse
Yes not really listening to it are you?
thats a bit of unfair description.. u should let the viewers judge for themselves
I disagree. I'm not impressed by the banal. Diamonds have value because of fewer reference points.
Alright now switch instruments and see who wins.
Popper plays guitar -- tho far from as well as Steve
Seriously you should change the title of your video!!
Do you even know who Steve Vai is?
The man can play anything at any speed.
Vai's style is so unique & original, no one comes close to dominating the guitar like he does.
A Guitar is an extension of his inner self, he flows through the instrument !!
No one owns Vai !
VaiGod1 The fanboy is real, just look at the name.
I think Joe Satriani might like a word...lol
@@Wysewolf buckethead over all of them!
I appreciate good music but hate clickbait especially admitted clickbait that's not even your content.
....maybe it should be deleted.
Diabeetus.......
Neither has a bit of class
Not hard to do, considering Steve Vai sucks, and a harmonica has way more notes than a guitar
John popper sounds very weak in comparison with Steve Vai
Popper destroyed Vai.
