  • Steve Vai duels with John Popper at the House of Blues. Some jaw dropping harmonica playing. Amazing guitar playing too. The 'owned' in the title of this video serves no purpose other than to attract attention to some fine musicianship. I'm sure a few sensitive guitar players will take the title personally.... but.... really just take it on the chin and enjoy some fantastic improvisational skill.

Me being an amateur harmonica player myself I can tell you what John Popper does is unimaginably hard. You think if you have never played of coarse that it is as simple as blowing and sucking the right holes but it goes so much deeper. You have to curl your tongue up while also keeping it pressed against three different wholes at the same time constantly while trying to catch the sound just right with your hands. These are called bends. On top of that, Popper can do what harmonica players refer to as, "Circular breathing" witch is more or less like breathing out and in at the same time. Not impossible but very hard to do.

+Dustin A. You're exactly right, because they assume that harmonica is a child's toy and easy compared to guitar or other instruments. I to was one of those people until a pinched ulnar nerve in my left arm rendered my guitar playing useless. So I wanted to stay musically active and pick an instrument that didn't require complex finger movement, so I chose a harmonica. I figured it was an easy instrument to learn and master. I was sadly mistaken. I have fallen in love and am obsessed!!! If you want to be good, it ain't easy, I had no idea about bending notes and all. I am and have been a musician(multi instruments) for 25+yrs, so before you talk shit, try it first!

I love both, but my money is on Mr Popper. While Vai can slam the strings to the bone and back is amazing talent as a axeman, But John has a significantly unique harmonica ability and to say he is talented simply just doesnt give him justice. He is a Godsend for sure.

It shocks me to see all of the Vai fans vs Pop fans slamming one or the other of these fine musicians. Their primary genres are pretty different so I can see why their fan bases are different as well. They are both top of the food chain for what they do and 300 years of playing wouldn't get 99% of you music critics to their level. Engaging in the "who's better" debate is truly absurd but, for the record, they're BOTH better. You haters should try to find a little enjoyment for how these world class musicians find common ground in some acid blues. Also, thanks much to the person who posted this. It was a joy seeing some footage of the late, great Bobby Sheehan. He was another gem and one of the most lyrical bassists ever.

Steve Vai is a LEADER, as is John Popper. Guitarists have consistently and monumentally progressed over the past 30 years, thanks in large part to a small handful of players including Steve, and YJM, etc...; harmonica players on the other hand, have not. They continue to listen to and sound like every other harp player before John, as far as standard Blues, Rock, or Country technique, tone, and songwriting; they may sound EXCELLENT, but none of them standout out from the crowd. As for this jam, I'd say improvisational skill takes precedent over technical, clinical standard abilities on your choice of instrument. John mimmicks a guitar-god's lines, and generally meshes tonally and sonically; yhis performance might not have been impressive by Blues Traveler standards, but nonetheless, impressive---and NOT easy. Couldn't imagine any other top harp player even, up there with Steve. No need for competition even here in the comments, they're both musical peers, and STILL at or near the pinnacle of their craft....

Yea, us musicians tend to get ticked when compared to other equally if not more talented musicians. I have been a BT fan for years. It has been said that for every person on the earth there are two more who look exactly alike. My youngest son is the spitting image of John Popper, now if he only had John's talent. Actually my son is a very gifted writer in his own right. When I was younger a friend of mine and I used to have our girlfriends try to tell us apart. They had some difficulty at first. Still looking for that other guy. ha

Vai is a technical marvel, a true guitar god, yet I would rather listen to Popper play the harmonica, cause Popper to me has got more soul, he is more emotional to me, gets under my skin a bit more. I am again, not dissin Steve Vai's technical ability, I mean I would take BB King over Steve every day of the week and he has played the same five notes for 60 years.
