  • * - one or more of the gate mechanism(s) at this crossing has been replaced since this video was recorded
** - crossing has received an upgrade since this video was recorded, but the gate mechanism(s) still remain
The second part to my GRS gate mech compilation, featuring the other 29 crossings I've filmed with them.
This part only features GRS Type D gate mechs, which are honestly a pretty nice one. They are the successor to the Type B, starting in about the mid-1960s, and running up into at least the 1980s. These seem to be most commonly found on the east coast, as they were installed by a number of railroads over here. Here in the southeast, the L&N was easily the biggest user of them, probably installing hundreds if not thousands across their system, though many have long since been replaced. The SOU, SCL, and ICG also used a good few, though not nearly as many it seems, and I know NS has also since gone through and purged many of the ones the SOU had installed, especially here in Alabama. It appears that the ICG and the late-SOU also preferred to use Safetran counterweight arms on theirs, which certainly gives them an interesting look, though the L&N stuck with the typical WRRS counterweight arms on theirs.

The part from the video 📸 of Main Street, Portland, Tennessee - Continuous "fire bell" 🔥 🔔 sound is a first, and something I've never heard. Great video!
Also, the clown 🤡 going around crossing 🚸 gates from Milton Avenue in Marianna, Florida while a train 🚆 is fast approaching. Train 🚂 always wins 🏆.

Thank you! And yea, that one had an old school/fire bell-style bell on it.

Most of the mechanical bells I hear on these railroad crossings are Modern Industries mechanical bells.

GRS gate mechs + MI equipment was fairly standard for the L&N in the 1970s.
