  • My client wanted to install these really nice Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 SLASH pups in his Les Paul Epiphone Special II... they are definitely worth more than the guitar! The install went smoothly and I did a complete setup as well. Enjoy the video and please remember to Like & Subscribe for more content.

    209.00 pickups in a 179.00 guitar and worried about 4.00 set of strings. You can't make this up. I love customers...

    Nice overall vid!
    Can you translate into audible English the part where you set the pickup height?

    I actually have one. Changed the shitty tuners to Grover style that screwed perfectly except I did have to enlarge the holes using a Stew Mac hole reamer tool. DO NOT USE A DRILL BIT, it will chip the finish. I also changed that shitty nut to a tusk, my friend did the same with bone. We can't tell any difference. I went to CTS pots with split pick up. (push /pull) , vintage wires and Seymour Duncan Billy Gibson pickups. My friend did the same but used the Slash pickups. We just turned $159 guitars into 600 to 1,000 dollar guitars for about 300 bucks. So they are a Les Paul JR's, with an extra pick up. Not P90's. The bodies are solid, the necks are fine and they are light and will rip you a new asshole. They are monsters, with the upgrades.

      I'd love to build one. Wish I had bought the one I was looking at several years ago that had maroon paint. (Think that was the color) They feel so good in your hands and very light.

      I agree. I bought one for a steal at $88 installed some Gibson tuners that my brother gave me, and bought some SD alnico II for like $100 on reverb. Guitar plays amazing now. It's my go to guitar, my Gibsons sit in their cases. The original ceramic pickups weren't bad, but I wanted an alnico II tone. These guitars with some Guitar Fetish tuners( which don't require reaming) and a new nut. Would vastly improve this guitar.

      i just applied scotch tape to the front of the guitar where i was redrilling a pot hole for a cts pot, ..... and drilled from inside the cavity where the pots are. ....I feel like only a guitarist would know what I'm talking about. ....the only problem I had was fitting a normal sized knob on a CTS pot because their stems are ridiculously oversided compared to ANY other knob I've EVER had in a stock guitar. ffs.

    If I wanted to have a music shop do a similar setup, and set the string heights, check everything, etc...like what is done in this video... what exactly would I go in and ask them to do? About how much would one expect this kind of work to cost if the frets don't require a lot of work?
    I'm debating a similar entry level guitar and then having something like this done to it a bit down the road as skills develop and if interest in playing continues.

      Isaiah, just ask for a setup and they will know what to do. Should cost between $60-100 depending on the area.

    Just had my tech install these pups in my LP standard, 1st time ive ever swapped pups. 2 things i noticed that im not sure are normal? I was told it was but not sure if my tech was being 100% honest lol.
    1) when we plugged the pups in the multimeter they read 9.30 on the bridge & 8.80 on the neck (before they were installed , he connected them each to the multimeter to make sure they worked). After they were fully installed and in guitar, each pup read a little weaker on the multimeter, tech said it was cuz the 500k pots use/take some of that energy or something, which is normal for the pups to drop a little on the meter after installing, nature of the beast? Jw how true? It looked like he peeled back about 3/4 inch of the braided pup wire before soldering the wire to what looked to be top/side edge of the circle/metal pot.
    2) i noticed after everything installed, it seemed like my volume knob was versitile? Seemed like volume at 7 was much quieter then i remember it being before the pickup swap..cant tell if i just thought 10-7 was less draststic of a volume drop off when it had the stock pups or if its possible the tech poorly installed them and thats why i think the volume knob had more of an even sweep? He said the pickup installation would have nothing to do with the volume knob sweep..so maybe the knob is reacting different to the new SD slash 2.0’s vs my stock 61’ burstbuckers? Or maybe i just thought the volume knob had a more even sweep? Any help or input on the feedback after getting them put in would really help! Im clearly new to the tech part so not sure if my tech did a fine job or if i should have someone else take a look

    Hey jw, i have a new 2023 Gibson Les Paul std. 60’s. I loved the Unburst & 60s neck profile, was Not really a fan of stock 61’ Burstbuckers (Alnico 5’s, on multimeter both read approx around 7.5k installed from factory).
    I recently had a set of Seymour duncan Slash 2.0 Alnico 2 pro’s installed in my 2023 60’s Gibson les paul standard. (Note i like slash but i got pickups due to what tone i liked best that i felt was what i wanted in my LP to sound like & this set seemed to scatch my itch (loud, little but not overally grittier, rich tone on Slash 2.0’s).
    After Slash 2.0’s were installed they read 8.6ish on neck & and 9.36k on bridge (advertised as 8.8 neck/9.38 bridge, but was told the pots eat some of the resistance so id only get that exact reading by testing pickups by themselves/directly to multimeter..also jw if true)?. But Main thing i’ve noticed…overall like tone much better..but it feels like i can work with Vol knob to about 7 then lower then 5 is very very quiet , and same with neck knob pot), the sweep seems to be less then my SG & i think i would have noticed if the 61 BB’s had such a lack of sweep. Would higher outpout of different humbuckers effect vol/tone knobs?? I know i have 50 style wiring and i saw him peel back a braided wire and solder it to like top corner of each Vol Cap , let it dry and was basicslly done (aside from small reset up). Does all that sound nomal or should i look into any trouble shooting…installion or pots wise( all i know is 50s style with orange drop caps and i believe 500k pots). Thanks would love any input on lack of sweep on knobs since swap most lol

      @@enzoloveless132 great pups, little louder but still nice a crisp/balanced and handles gain great *bridge has more output then neck, giving a nice little growl on middle position*. More modern then a PAF style Pup but they are just solid seymour duncan alnico 2 pro humbuckers with slash’s name and a little louder then his original set (put the nickel covered SD slash 2.0’s in my 60s LP unburst to replace the stock gibson 61’ BBs…which towards the end were growing on me lol but the Seymour Duncan Slash 2.0’s seem to fit my ideal LP tone more so then the 61’ bbs*.

    Does the braided coating on the wire have to be pulled down to reveal the other wire? Mine only has the black wire. I can't find the correct wiring diagram for one volume, one tone, and a 3 way switch.

    • @ManotickGuitarTech
      @ManotickGuitarTech  Před 2 lety +1

      The braiding is the ground and needs to be soldered to the pot; checkout the Seymour Duncan we site for wiring diagrams.

    • @ManotickGuitarTech
      @ManotickGuitarTech  Před 2 lety +5

      Baba, I like to make sure the truss rod even works before doing anything to the guitar. In this case, I could see that the relief was too high to begin with and would have to be adjusted after the string change anyhow. Didnt want to change the pickups, change the strings and then find out the russ rod was stripped or didnt work. Thanks for watching!

    • @ManotickGuitarTech
      @ManotickGuitarTech  Před 2 lety +4

      David, the string radius is determined by the saddles on these tune-o-matic bridges and is fixed (unlike the fender bridges, for example). I rarely check them on Les Paul style guitars unless somebody has already filed the saddle slots down and created a problem.

    Some people just like polishing turds 🤷
    Depending on the year it's a plywood body, and "white mahogany neck" which isn't actually mahogany at all but rather an Asian soft wood...
    Why would anyone put a $200 dollar set of pickups in a $79 dollar guitar? You can literally pick these up in pawnshops all over America for under $100..
    This guitar will likely end up on reverb, marketplace or ebay as "modded" for $350-$400 bucks 😂 that's what these clowns do,they buy cheap garbage guitars and throw some parts on it and call it modded with a $300 markup it's almost hilarious...

    Shouldn’t the black side always face inwards? Or does this set have a reversed zebra bridge pickup?
