  • I compare my new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires to the OEM Super Sports on the full track of Pitt Race in my C7 Corvette Z51! What do you think of the lap time difference & what tires do you use on track???

    I found the PS4S to be a substantial improvement in cold and wet conditions from the SS. Had a rain day at the track as well, and it was very clear held better than anything else out there. The flip side of this is I had one come apart at Mid Ohio after only a day and a half of track time. Called the Michelin hot line and was told NOT to track the PS4S's, as they will not hold up. SS's are best for most drivers, and the Cup 2's if you want a little extra fun.

    • @CarGuy11
      @CarGuy11  Před 5 lety +1

      I totally agree about cold & wet performance. I can’t believe they said not to track them!

    Good video
    I need to get tires soon and would like suggestions as well... the tire sizes I need are
    265/30/19
    305/30/20
    ? Might be 35 instead of 30 ?
    Any input on best all around tire, prefer run flat, but any I put good
    Thanks again carguy11

      I think the best tires are the OEM Corvette tires actually. The wear well, good in rain & track. Plus are run flats.

    The michelin mp4s is a (very good) road tyre designed for both wet and dry conditions (the outside half of the tyre is soft and the inside half is a wet compound) so it’s always going to be a compromise in the dry on a track. The cup tyres are definitely a better choice for the odd track day but obviously you’ll trade wet and cold grip for outright dry weather pace. I’m currently trying to decide between michelin mp4s or the cups just now for my m5 cp, but I think the mp4s would be the wise choice with the weather in the U.K.

    • @CarGuy11
      @CarGuy11  Před 5 lety

      I agree the mp4s are much better for street & will last longer. Depends how many track days you do.

  • @mrpmj00
    @mrpmj00 Před 5 lety

    Because the 4s is not a runflat like the OEM, does it screw up the Corvette's TPMS? Do you have to get a new TPMS?

    • @CarGuy11
      @CarGuy11  Před 5 lety

      No the TPMS will work with either.

    I don’t know if this is true, but I read the Pilot Super Sports were designed in parallel with the chassis, and made specifically for the C7 as a summer tire.

    Did I understand you correctly the 4S is not a runflat tire? I can see where the sidewall would not be as stiff if that is the case.The warmer temps would definitely hurt your track times. I am looking at the 4S as a replacement to the OEM tires on my 2017 Grand Sport later this fall. Michelin does not make the 4S for the Grand Sport yet. No track in West Texas but I do drive pretty aggressively on the highway. I look forward to more viewer comments on their experience.

    • @CarGuy11
      @CarGuy11  Před 6 lety

      No they don’t make a runflat 4S. I’m sure lower temps would help.

    Good stuff, I guess I need to make sure to ask for OEM super sports when I wear mine out. I did not know they made other versions
    By the way your new tires will also extend your driving season into cold weather months, not just good for the rain

  • @rmm2424
    @rmm2424 Před 6 lety

    I would say with a weather conditions you probly still were a couple seconds slower than the OEM tires. Like I have been telling you get the RE71R in a 255/35/19 and 295/30/20. You will go sub 2minutes.

    • @CarGuy11
      @CarGuy11  Před 6 lety

      Yeah but I need a good street tire that can handle rain as well so can accept the compromise I guess.

  • @videomaniac108

    I have a Nissan 370Z sport coupe 6MT that came with the Bridgestone Potenza S007 as the OEM tire. I recently replaced them with a set of the Michelin PS4S tires and noticed an immediate difference. While the Michelins are quieter and less harsh with better wet performance, the floppy sidewalls make the steering less precise and more vague. The Potenzas had a faster turn-in and were better damped with steering and road irregularity transients, feeling more firmly planted to the road than the Michelins. The PS4S may be a better tire for a heavier and more luxury-oriented performance car. The best tire in the Michelin line that I can see for my car would be the Pilot Sport Cup 2 and that might be a better tire for your car as well. Another nice thing that I noticed about the Cup 2 is its very light weight, improving its responsiveness.

    • @CarGuy11
      @CarGuy11  Před 4 lety

      Thanks for the review. Only thing about Cup 2 is terrible in wet & don’t last long. I really think the OEM Corvette Super Sports are the best compromise.

  • @MrLsmiles
    @MrLsmiles Před 4 lety +1

    I’m about to replace mine on my C7 GS and I’m keeping them the same. If you do more research on why Chevrolet choose that specific tire you probably won’t want anything else. You do lose the ability to take the car out on colder sub 40 degree days, but for me I’m not taking my car out on crap weather. I did autocross the OEM tires on a 35 degree day when it was sunny and struggled for traction due to the cold, but that’s on a track the streets are fine. In a perfect world I’d probably say get another set of wheels with the 4S tires

    I use the OEM Super Sport ZP's and they are terrific on track considering they are a street tire. They have very quick warm up and offer solid grip, but do overheat in ~3 laps and get slippery. I've set 2:33 lap times at COTA on them which is a serious lap on street tires (see my channel). Also, I've heard the Michelin tire reps at the Corvette Museum bash recommend to stay with the Corvette specific Super Sports instead of the PS4's and I guess they are correct.

    • @CarGuy11
      @CarGuy11  Před 6 lety

      Oh wow good to hear that. I contacted Michelin to ask that question and they never got back to me.

  • @5150dgs
    @5150dgs Před 3 měsíci

    Your results confirm what I've long suspected: the C7, like any serious performance car, was engineered for everything to work together: rubber compounds, sidewall, suspension, etc. When you start screwing with a different tire, you immediately throw everything out of whack. Sidewalls play a HUGE role in overall spring rate and how the suspension works. Most of the guys that buy these cars bitch about the Ackerman effect, the harsh ride, the noise, then they go and neuter it with a different tire and say "now it's better". No, it isn't. It's different, and 99% of the time, slower around a course.

    • @CarGuy11
      @CarGuy11  Před 3 měsíci

      Yes very true. Have now gone back to OEM tires.

  • @applejacks971

    I run the factory Goodyear F1 GS EMT's on my stock 04 C5, and handling wise, it outperforms my '13 Grand Sport with the factory Goodyear F1 Supercars (they are absolutely worthless and have to come off). My C5 out handles my brother 08 C6 with Pilot Sports, and will give our 14 Stingray with factory Pilot Super Sports a run for its money.
    I don't know what to put on the Grand Sport as the 4S's aren't run flats, and I can't get the PSS's in the size for it. I can only find the factory size in the PS2 :(
    If I switch to the 19's and 20's, I can only find those in the 4S. I'm thinking I shouldn't have bought the GS. The C5 is gonna remain my main ride.

  • @CaptStraightEdge
    @CaptStraightEdge Před 5 lety

    The Super Sports designed for the C7 are the only super sports they make, there's not a special Corvette compound and a separate super sport for everyone else, same with the cup 2s designed for the Z06 and ZR1, as far as super sport vs 4S the 4S is the superior tire, and a 5 second difference isn't tires that's driver and car, not an insult just saying you should've got the same or faster times out of the 4S all things the same, I would expect to see even faster times out of the Cup 2s but they're strictly a track tire regardless of what Michelin marketed them ass, they're straight up deadly in the rain so definitely not an everyday tire

    • @CarGuy11
