Renault Modus front spring replacement

  • The process of replacing the front coil spring on a Renault Modus.
    The process is very similar for the Clio, and in general most front wheel drive cars have a similar layout. The modus has a few bits of trim and the wiper mechanism to remove to get to the bolts, not bad engineering just a consequence of this design of car, as demonstrated in this video everything comes apart with ease and this is actually an easy job to do.
    A spring compressor was used in the video, however in the days before i had my own spring compressor a few local mechanics would swap springs over for less than £10.

    I just done this exact job, but on the left passenger side 2004 Modus.
    Being on the left, I was able to access the top strut area by removing the left wiper arm, and operating the wipers to get the elbow mechanism out the way, without having to remove the entire wiper assembly. I used the exact same spring compressor too, but the chain slipped and it all went BANG, but we didn't die, so all good.
    Shock was completely knackered, new spring (broken in identical place as yours), and new shock went back in perfectly.
    Regrettably I forgot to torque that top pin bolt whilst it was on the ground, so when I drove out the workshop, the knocking started, and had to take all the covers again to torque it down, rookie mistake!
    That was a few days ago, I've the air conditioning condenser to replace next.
    Modus is a nice little car, but could really do with a proper workshop manual.
    Great video though, it makes a huge difference not having raging house music in motor videos these days.

      I think if you wanted it might be possible to have got to the strut top bolt without removing the wiper mechanism, but for the sake of a few extra bolts and to show it on video i removed it.
      The spring compressor is a big step up from those death traps that are the threaded bar types but im sure from your expeirence now they are still something that deserves a lot of respect. Its not so much that the chain slips, the chain is only there to prevent all flinging across the room but ensure the spring is properly seated in those cups/forks of the compressor. I still think the Branick 7600 is the best type on the market, ive modelled one up on CAD to try and make it here but it does require a fair bit of machining, the import duties and shipping costs would make it very very expensive.
      If you want a good manual go to emanuals online i got the full workshop manual for £10 on there, basically any torque figures i quote come from the Renault workshop manual that emanuals online sell, instant download made it handy.
      Haha yes i tend to avoid the music, for a start it usually causes a headache with youtubes copyright identification tool and its a gripe i have when watching other videos is its usually a genre i dont like, who doesnt like the sound of a ratchet working.

      I forgot to reply, and thank you for telling me about the Emanuals site! I bought it and spent hours reading through it.
      Today, I’m doing the same shock, and spring job, but on driver/offside.
      It’s all going good, but I cannot seem to get the top bearing holes aligned with the chassis. It’s the same bearing part, not matter how many times I turn the part, the holes don’t line up. It’s driving me crazy! 😂

    my coil spring snapped and flew off today while driving, i got a quote £160 for parts and labour. i thought id check to see if i can do it myself but i think paying someone to do this is definitely looking like the better option for me! thanks for your clear & concise video! I'll be checking out the other modus videos, as no doubt I'll need them soon! 😅

    Great video although given the amount of dismantling (labour cost) needed just to access the top mount bolts, I would have strongly recommend fitting new shocks too as it’s only the part price increase and not any more labour costs to fit them.
    Appreciate its not my money I’m spending tho

    Great job. Seems that this car is more work than others. Other cars are way more accessable. Even replacing the headlight bulbs on this model seems to be a headache.
    I bought one yesterday and will be able to pick it up next week. I'm kinda regretting it, but hopefully it won't require any work for the next 2 years.

      It is a few more steps to get to components due to the plastic cladding at the bottom of the windscreen. However i hope with the videos i have made for the modus it should take away any apprehension people have of working on them. You are talking a few extra minutes to remove those panels then it is the same as most other cars.
      A toyota yaris is the same as are other cars that have this cab forward layout, the scuttle panel must come off to access the strut top.
      Headlight bulbs on the pre facelift models was apparently tricky, the owner of this car actually brought it round to me to have the headlight bulbs changed and i was geared up for removing the headlights when i discovered the bulbs were all accessible, although this is a face lifted car.
      I am not entirely sure how bad the earlier cars were, might not actually be too bad.

      I definitely appreciate your videos. It's encouraging to hear that the headlights weren't all too tricky. I read that the blinkers are a bitch tho. I'll see when I get the car in hopefully a few days.
      I'm used to bigger cars. But that lower road tax is what made me choose this car. Haha. We'll see.

    Omfg...my Modus need damper change :D A lot of additional work :D
    PS: I hear squeaky noises, when I drive over speedbumps. Is it just antirollbar sticks, or antirollbar rubber housing?

      The front panels are a bit of extra work, but that is just modus life haha.
      Squeaky noises could be a few possibilities. Strut top mounts, the wishbone bushes, and the items you mentioned antiroll bars or the bar bushing. You would need to lift the wheel and use pry bars to manipulate the suspension in order to induce and diagnose what component is causing the noise.
      The only good thing about the likes of the modus is that suspension components are not particularly complex or expensive.

      I have two teng torque wrenches at the moment a 1/4 and 1/2 drive. Need to get a 3/8 one as there are some torque figures that neither wrench can reach. The smaller one goes up to 25nm, the larger one starts at 40nm and goes up to 210.

    can i put a set of alloys from a clio on my modus 1.5 diesel 2012..and can i get a slim spare that would fit the modus... ps ive been up to your yard a few years ago to get an indicator for a toyota yago...i remember the mushroom tunnels ... thanks RON ...LARNE

      I am not 100% sure it is not something i have done, but i think renault wheels are normally fairly interchangeable, should be space savers. Best bet would just to try one in a scrapyard, t-met or traynors might allow you to do that.
      Are you sure it was me, Toyota parts ni are not too far from me (less than 10 miles) i know he also works out of mushroom tunnels, its just ive never broken any toyotas for parts myself, i mostly work with french stuff.

      @@rondillon4136 I genuinely do not remember this.
      I generally don't break cars as i don't have the time after the day job to deal with it, at a push i will buy a spare car to keep one of mine running.
      Definitely do not remember having a 107/Aygo/C1 for breaking. Had the odd one that i bought and sold on, but no breakers,
      There is a fair amount of yards down this neck of the woods that were at one time mushroom farms and are now used for storing cars, have a look on marketplace there is a 405 executive for sale with pictures of it in a mushroom house, had a few people asking if it was me but its not.
