  • Founder of Nuts Poker League, Steve Bellis, is next in The Den and is asking for 50K for 20% equity. In an extraordinary twist, Steve's "enthusiastic" pitch has Dragons entering a bidding war for a stake in his business. But Peter Jones is not as convinced!
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

Bordering on arrogance though - I mean 'I think they were very lucky to get a yes from me'... really?! And his 'Nope' responses to Duncan were just rude and childish. It's possible to be confident and still be polite. I think he'd be hard work to have as a business partner if something wasn't going his way.

@@goldeneddie It's called Dragon's Den, not fluffy Bunnies' Den. These guys are there to be hard-nuts tough on everyone who comes in, otherwise it's not a show. Don't lose sight of the fact that some companies come to the Den simply for the exposure. Some of those who have walked away with no investment have gone on to bigger things as a result of being on the telly.

I also think he is extremely clever for utilising tactics which are still within the rules and operating within regulations for Dragon's Den, but are quite unorthodox and abnormal. Peter in my opinion had preconceptions on the business and bailed out too early to actually hear all the information and data the Nuts guy possessed. He didn't even stay to potentially capitalise of his asset revealed AFTER he stated he was out (the website). He had an incorrect supposition about the business and conveyed those skeptical thoughts with arrogance and snobbery. You should know that Peter has a well established history of being arrogant and outright rude to entrepreneurs. To explicitly answer your question. No, he is not obliged to agree in any deal or to place a deal in the first place, akin to any other Dragon. However he can still be negative with his verdicts and thoughts. A strong opinion has the potential to be propagated through snobbery and arrogant methods and can itself be arrogant and snobbish. Yes he definitely was confident, like the Nuts guy. However the Nuts guy simply wasn't demoralised or weakened in his stance - which may of had arrogant elements and a semblance of snobbery. The smartest possible thing he could have said here would have been "Deborah would you be willing to work alongside Duncan in any sort of arrangement? Possibly even all 4 of you involved?"
That way he would have known if Duncan and Deborah together could have been an option. Not asking that which potentially would have been 'the nuts' in terms of getting a deal, was a bit shortsighted in my opinion..... Even though he held his own quite well otherwise.

He didn;t need to. I think he has proven his worth and I doubt he would have wanted to work with that guy. He is great at sussing out people with an attitude. Yes he may push some but it is to get to the crux of who they are and show their mettle and often he has turned around and made offers when he gets to the truth even if the entrepreneur is not perfect. Some may choose to see confidence others may choose to see cocky. Peter is great with people who at least show some humility when they are coming in asking for money and expertise. It is great to be confident and believe in yourself but when at the start of your success oh for goodness sake show a little humility.
His disrespect of Duncan at the end nailed it for me. I am amazed that he said he knew nothing of Duncan's credentials. Also the constant nope nope. responding to him, rude. The way he said it. I mean the product he was trying to sell you would have thought he had done some homework on the Dragons. Also his long speech about expertise. He was dismissing Duncan and should have just taken the offer and shut up. Too full of himself and somewhat rude. I am not surprised Duncan was annoyed he has earned his credentials.

As with a lot of potential Dragon investments if you check companies house you'll notice that no recorded changes or increased issue in share capital is ever recorded to reflect the equity stake agreed in the den. I think you'll find that a lot of what is agreed on in the den is subject to further due diligence & is rarely formally executed. In the Steve Bellis' situation, you'll find the company dissolved in late 2015 & when checking the published accounts under filing history the company never achieved an annual revenue figure of more than £50k... So on this occasion, Peter's instinct was actually correct & do agree that it's probably finest example of how to turn the flow of control against those sitting high on their perch. Steve's delivery was excellent, that's one man I'm not playing poker against. :)
