They'll turn it into a universal Tax on everyone during the next Parliament.
That is the worry from those looking forward to a fat salary and pension. Gravy train could end so they want something ready to replace it which will net them the same money and nobody to question where the money goes.
100% incorrect. The current rate of people ditching the licence is roughly 600,000 a year. With 24,372,000 licences sold last year, it will take over 30 years at the current rate for no one to be buying a licence.

@@ditch3827 I suspect the rate of opting out is increasing rapidly though - live TV is just an outdated media format.
Watch what a broadcaster chooses to transmit when they choose to transmit it (and pay for the privilege) vs watch what you want when you want for free.

Strangely though, there are people out there that still watch the bbc and are prepared to pay for it

The government protect the BBC and will somehow fleece the public into paying for them, so actually the licence should stay. Those that watch live TV can then pay for it, whilst those of us that don't watch live TV don't have to pay a penny. The alternative is some general taxation or broadband tax or whatever.
They can keep it for another millennia, I'll still not pay.
But tell us honestly, do you ever watch any TV that requires you to have a current TV Licence?

@@rogernaylor1972 I imagine that if someone has been found to be in breach of the tv licensing law then they are paying the cost of a license in fine but also ordered to purchase a TV license on top of that as they have been found in breach and therefore legally deemed to have required a license at the time

I wouldn't go that far. They definitely shouldn't have the power to prosecute people but the PO travesty was on a different level. 100's of lives ruined, bankruptcies and worse.
BBC's total income is £5.7Bn including the money they get from selling the programs we have already paid for to other broadcasters.

They also need a lot of money to cover up sex scandals and those child trafficking tunnels aren't cheap to build.
They get revenue from CZcams as well by placing ads on their content.
I'd rather they keep something I can choose not to pay rather than put it on council tax or something else where I have no choice.

It's inevitable they'll eventually switch to paying for BBC via taxation when enough people cancel their direct debit. Taxation is increasingly looking like theft
I agree,I havent paid the telly tax for over 6 years and have no intention of ever paying it again.I have been comcerned that the telly tax might be attached to people's council tax or our broadband bills,making it more difficult to opt out of paying for the corrupt biased BBC.
I live on my own, I have never had a BBC extortion certificate, I find the abundance of BBC letters quite comforting , the bright red ones bring a tingle to my loins, for many like me it can be rare to receive a letter from anyone, it is nice to know the BBC are always thinking of me. Please consider that when the BBC take elderly and disabled to court, it is not a malicious act at all, they believe they are giving us all a day out.
My dog always happy to shred that letter from BBC especially if I said that letter is for her….She does expect that letter now and then from them😅

Without the TV license, what threat could the politicians continually hold over the BBC's head?
The same one they use on ITV; it's called Censorship. You will report the news we want you to, and only what we want you to.
The threat works more the other way. Probably unspoken but, "Let us keep the licence if you don't want more biased coverage in the run up to the general election", is how it will be understood.
Without the TV license there is no BBC as we know it. That can only be a good thing.

I'm really happy if the TV licence is staying. I don't have one, have given up on TV (I don't even watch catchup) and don't use iPlayer.
So if the licence is staying, I don't have to pay for something I'm not using.

I agree. We don't pay the licence as there is very little on TV to watch but we do use some catchup for ITV but no other channels.
We refuse to watch any BBC catchup.
At least if they don't abolish it they can't lump it in with some other payment which makes us pay via the backdoor.

I don't think the councils would take it on because it would be itemised on the bill giving people the option to refuse to pay that portion of it.
Only takes one court loss and all payments stop leaving the BBC with a big black hole in their finances.

You can decriminalize any offense at any point. Also it should not be a criminal offense, it should be a civil offense at most. How can it be criminal not to buy something you don’t want?
So, would you be in favour of the BBC being told to sue people who do not pay the licence fee ?
As I understand it, the level of proof in a civil case is actually lower.

If not then it’s a breach of contract between the parties nd still requires the man or woman to take the stand and press the record at a lawful court of record.
So who is claiming the wrongdoing ?
She has been told - in essence - “don’t rock the boat”. Remove the criminality element and you will dilute their power and you know that won’t wash because it gives them the edge to scare people into buying something they can in, reality, do without. But why the BBC licence fee has to be paid to watch other live broadcasters, is beyond me, but I notice the minister doesn’t make any mention of this anomaly, which is grossly unfair and unjustified. Simple truth must be, they cannot morally justify it and it got through the legislation, originally,because no-one had any idea at the time, how powerful that slice of legislation would prove to be in in the 21st century. It has turned out to be a charter to print money for the BBC and they did absolutely nothing to deserve it. It remains morally unjust and should be repealed; the ‘for and against’ funding the BBC could be argued separately, but the key is this spurious use of the term “live” TV in the legislation. It has in effect, for all practical purposes, monopolised the airways, but that is not sufficient for the fee mongers, they want to “hang” you, as well, should you default! Don’t hardly know what’s worse in this respect; the BBC or the Post Office.
Received another letter yesterday. It's ridiculous. I've been TV free since 2020 but still...the letters. Makes me more determined to never fund that disgusting organisation ever again!

While I don't like the licence fee, it's better than having it changed to a compulsory tax. At least we can legally opt out at the moment.
I also hope it stays and also hope people keep paying it because if they don't it will just be funded through tax which we will have to pay.
While I agree, sadly with numbers cancelling or not renewing it will end up our taxes subsidising the BBC as they will have to maintain 5.3 billion or what ever it is. The government will say it's a essential media service and will be supported by the tax payer ...watch this space 😊

As long as it's not part of a compulsory tax I'm happy. That means I will continue to be able to not watch any TV and not pay the licence fee.
Couldn't care less whether it stays or goes I haven't watched any TV in five years , CZcams and my massive collection of classic TV and films does me, before I cancelled my licence I realised that it just wouldn't occur to me to turn on the TV set and watch terrestrial TV, it didn't represent me , I didn't recognise the country that was being portrayed on TV and the adverts looked like they were filmed in Africa or the West Indies, I love just reading a book now and pop to the library now and again, I forgot how relaxing reading a good book was.

Imagine they went down the subscription route, I think the government is going to change the title to a media licence. I quite enjoy not paying and pissin them off! But feel for the vulnerable who are getting pumped. The threatening needs to stop though.
Would needing to use the internet to access a bank account , read the monthy statements , renew car tax book a doctors appointment and such fall foul of any broadband media tax?
Certain people are being paid to keep the licence fee, people in government ? Making it awkward to get rid of it.
As a person who lives in Nadine's former ward, moved here in 2013 , you don't know her. She was utterly useless. She is more interested in her own fame that any political work. She should never have been made a minister. Her constituents could either get no response from her or absolutely no help when she did respond. Don't believe a word she says. I've been a Conservative supporter for my whole voting life and could never bring myself to vote for her.

You wanna know why its hard to get rid of the TVlicence? .... its because whenever somone tries to actually achieve this goal they get a lovely big backhander from the bbc forcing them to stand down.

Not sure about the "backhander" but it seems clear than no government dare risk seriously upsetting the BBC, especially so close to an election.

I believe they've just recently been changed from horse and cart to electric. I would implore you not to buy a TV Licence, and watch as much TV as you want, on any channel for as long as you wish. In the days when all you had was BBC1 and BBC2, the licence fee made sense. Now that there is ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, all of whom have to rely on advertising, and then there are hundreds of freeview channels both tv and radio, all of which have to rely on advertising, and all the Sky channels that rely on a subscription, I think the TV Licence needs to stop. Partly because they regard any door with a lock on it as a dwelling, especially in shared houses, so every single renter has to pay a licence fee because your bedroom door has a lock on it, while houses could have 10 televisions and only pay one licence fee, so they hit the poorest the hardest, but also because there is no reason why the BBC cannot rely on advertising. The fact that it is a criminal offence not to pay a large amount for two bloody channels is really extraordinary.
Yeah and a few months ago it was let slip that channel 4 is a bbc channel. And with what the license fee says that points to the realisation that channel 5 and itv are bbc channels aswell
@@lupaswolfshead9971 Channel 4 is owned by the Channel 4 Corporation. The BBC is owned by the BBC. Two entirely different consortiums. Channel 4 gets no funding at all from the taxpayer. It relies on advertising. The BBC enforce their licence fee by making the poor pay more, and prosecuting those that don't watch it but have to pay out of their pockets anyway.
Yet the Public bbc gave birth to the PRIVATE bbc (without the public's permission) that is oh so commercial selling of all things bbc we paid for.

Good - At least those of us without a licence will not be strong armed into paying an internet and media tax and those that are currently paying the licence are (thanks to people like you Chilli) waking up to realising they don't have to pay it and are ceasing to pay in droves. Yes personally agree that the current licence fee arrangement is better than an option of everyone paying whether they watch it or not. When the sales men(aka enforcement officers) turn up be polite, 'say not today and goodbye' and close the door don't sign or say anything. Mass evasion will prob lead to a tax on everyone.

If the licence fee stays there is only one thing I can continue to do in retaliation to this outdated scheme, that is to gladly not pay the licence fee, as I have not done so for some years now, and hope to waste goon and BBC admin teams time, writing letters etc. I have not had a visit yet, but await the day when I can follow Jons advice, “who are you” followed by “not interested thank you” and close the door.

The thing that concerns me the most here, is not just what she said, but what she DIDN'T say..
She mentioned decriminalising not payment of TV licence, but it's concerning she didn't say a thing about scrapping the Tv licence and making the BBC funded by ads like the other broadcasters (which is what the majority wants) , or by subscription, or scrapping the BBC altogether.
I find it absolutely shocking and obscene, that in 2024, we still have to pay the BBC, in order to watch not just BBC content, but live content from ANY broadcaster, and from anywhere in the world; utter madness..
The fundamental point you are missing here Chilli is the tories will be dumped out of office by 2027,so basically they couldn't give a toss right now.
If the UK government do not get rid of TV licences you can look forward to total mayhem after 2027.
If the licence is not scrapped, more people will be forced to opt out of the licence system and many more will just outright refuse to pay it. This will lead to less revenue for the Beeb, thereby forcing them to raise the licence fee to ridiculous levels, which in turn will force even more people to stop paying.
Auntie was an old favourite in years gone by, but she has outstayed her welcome and her upkeep is becoming too costly. I think now is time to gently ease old Auntie into a retirement home.

It wouldn’t take three years to give the free license back to the over 75’s, they could make that announcement tomorrow .
The government, regardless of party, will never scrap the licence fee. Therefore, the only way this stops is if million cancel the TV Tax. So I urge everyone to cancel this worthless service.

If Parliament decided to make the BBC a commercial network, it could happen quite quickly. It would also mean a lot of pointless managers and pen-pushers being fired. That would give them the chance to get gainful employment.
I’m done with the BBC, giving them money for nothing. Viewing habits have changed to the extent that you don’t need to watch stuff as it’s being broadcast.
What about a scheme to REDUCE the licence fee by 50% every year until it becomes pointless. That would give the BBC time to adjust and find alternative funding. Not that they'll get it...

Just 2 years free and the letters come and come. Thanks to you I'm not scared of the knock on the door. Oddly the letter today referred to officers rather than enforcement officers. Made me wonder if you showing the job advert for field officers had some effect.
It'll be interesting to see how things progress with more and more Gen-Zs becoming householders. The understanding I have is that a large number of the younger generation rely solely on CZcams, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney plus etc for their entertainment, thereby not needing or paying for, a TV licence.
Which is why they are losing 80,000 households a month. That is un-sustainable.

Just thought you would want to hear this, just phoned tv licence to revoke right of implied access and updated my no licence needed, to which the operator repeated herself despite me telling her I only have a tv for video gaming proceeded to re ask me if I watched tv or downloaded bbc programs or iplayer! They really don’t seem to understand when people say no, she then told me I could be liable for a visit to which I politely reminded her that as I’m removing right of implied access the only way they can come to my address is with a warrant

The first part, you’re probably right about. The second part ? Hmmm not so sure. Labour is ideologically wedded to a dominant “state broadcaster”. So no chance whatsoever of it going commercial under them. If they keep the license fee they’re likely to make it free for very low income groups. Which means it’ll cost a lot more for everyone else who pays it !
Either that, or they’ll go for a media tax. My moneys on the media tax.
