The Lusitania was a British boat. The 159 American casualties were among roughly 1000 total deaths and 2000 total passengers. The sinking turned a lot of people against Germany because it was a big public atrocity that was personal to a lot of people who at this point were not involved. Notably, the ship was a civilian ship, but it was running ammunition, so people argue to this day whether it was a valid military target or just attacking civilians. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle
tbh i would consider that as civilian with special cargo. lots of civilian planes for middle eastern countries transport militairy cargo on top of passengers but its still counts as civilians since there are people on board who dont have anything to do with it

The Lusitania carried ammunition and war relevant material, so it was a valid target. The civilians were used as humans shields. British naval minster at that time, Winston Churchill (cigar guy), knew how to use that perfectly in propaganda, and the Germans fell into the trap.
The hell of it is, Germany even warned everyone that any ships sailing under Britain's flag are considered targets. @@ram.ram.saryane8121 Not trying to start any debate over death numbers here but I think it is incorrect to say that the video is "fake" because of the numbers on India. They DO show the numbers for India, they just do not call attention to those specific numbers because while 2.6 million is a high number of military involved, it isn't as high as the numbers of the European powers, and the video is specifically the "Fallen of WW2" so it isn't about the number of soldiers sent to fight, it is about the number that fell in battle.
The purpose of the video is not to be a detailed history on the Indian military or the atrocities of British colonialism.
I'm not saying your points are not valid, just saying that those points do not discount the validity of the video itself. There is a reason it has won many rewards.
The channel started oversimplifiying the biggest wars and revolutions, then did something called miniwars so it wasn't in hiatus between videos for so long, and currently is comically overexplaining some stuff. It would be interesting for you to react to The Pig War next to notice the contrast both in format and in the increased production value.
The Emu wars was a miniwars video that I think would be sufficient and appropriate to watch. That way she could work through his videos chronologically.

A few years ago scientist found a lot of weapons on the seabed at the place where the Lusitania sunk, the allies did try to smuggle weapons on the ship, so the attack by the Germans was definitely reasonable.
Now that you've seen this for reference, look up "If WWI was a bar fight." There's also a WWII were a bar fight when you get to that one. They are short reads and a few people have adapted them as videos.
Also, you might enjoy "The King's Man." It's the third in the Kingsmen Series, but you don't need to see the other two. it's set just before WWI and a lot of the events in this video are part of the story line in a sort of over the top James Bond movie kind of way.
I think it was a bit cheap of the producers of The King's Man to put that obvious sequel hook in the end where the treaty of Versailles is so brutally punitive Germany is guaranteed to get incensed about it.

I know a lot of modern vets, combat and outside support, but the most significant thing i ever heard a ceteran say was told to me by a WW2 vet who served every year of the war in a combat role. He said, "I thanked God everyday they (the UN) had taken a stance against hand to hand combat. My father had fought with a club, in my time we fought with artillery shells."

Yeah food reaction videos are definitely a thing Im interested in, idk why but that and history/culture reaction feels like it has a big overlap in how I enjoy it and apparently so for many people as far as I can tell. Foods you hate or foods you havent tried at all, either would be interesting.

Historians have the concept of the "peace dividend". Because we had relatively small militaries and almost no fighting in Europe for the last 80 years, we DID have a lot of available money that we did spend on all kinds of things to improve the countries. Which have been just huge, and made the populations very rich.

Weird how much America has changed up to world war 2 we tried to avoid entering world war 1 and 2 but both wars we got dragged into. World war 1 Germany was trying to get Mexico to attack us. And world war 2 Japan attacks Hawaii getting us involved in that war as well. Ever since then we have pretty much been at war constantly don't even bother being neutral anymore. Although. Now that Afghanistan is over this is the first time in decades we haven't been in a major conflict in decades. Still some military operations here and there somewhere I imagine. But full on conflict / war nothing is really happening which is extremely bizzare to see.

So I can give you a little more info on the Lusitania that might help clear it up a bit. There were over 1000 people who died on the Lusitania, but the US got particularly upset that there were those ~100 US citizens on there. To be fair to the Germans however, the Lusitania was regularly using it's extra cargo space to transport perfectly normal and everyday American goods for people in Europe who wanted to buy them, such as Guns and Bullets.
Don't forget the add the Germans took out in the paper explicitly telling Americans not to travel on ships like the Lusitania, because it was very dangerous to not travel on American flag carrying vessels!
Something that would go very well with this, a song by Sabaton called Christmas Truce. Since it's a real story about something beautiful happening during such a dark and brutal time.

Speaking of a few people sacrificing millions to gain just a little power and land, I’d suggest looking up Carl Sagan’s ‘The Pale Blue Dot’. There’s a beautiful excerpt that talks about how incredibly stupid war and hatred and petty squabbles are and the excerpt as a whole is quite moving, in my opinion, if you’ve never heard of it before.

Try using a figure 8 to wrap your earbuds. It works. I saw it in a movie once and have done it ever since. They have a harder time tangling in a figure 8 but they stay organized.
The budgets for militaries go under the term "defense" instead of war. Here in the US, after WWII, we even changed it from "The War Department" , went through a couple name changes, and ended up with "The Department of Defense." That's the thing. Until the entire world agrees to demilitarize all at the same time, countries need armies to defend themselves from everyone else's army. In order for that to happen, there can't be any dictators or autocracies like DPRK, Russia, or throw a dart at a map of Africa and you'll probably hit one. Yeah, all that money could go to infrastructure, science, education, health, and poverty but until the entire planet decides world peace is the way, armies aren't going anywhere.

He died in captivity at the age of 23, about six months before world war 1 ended. In the balkans, his legacy is disputed and he remains polarizing figure to say the least. 09:29 Franz conrad von Hötzendorf. He's quite a character: he tried to start war with Serbia as early as 1906, petiotioning to have emperor to declare war on serbia for whopping 25 times in total. Modern historians regard him as one the worst commanders of World War 1, second only perhaps to italian general Luigi Cadorna. Cadorna on his side is famous of getting stuck on Isonzo river and needing 12 battles to finally overcome the austrians in 2.5 years.
For this reason, Hötzendorf's battles with Cadorna are sometimes characterized as "when a stoppable force meets a movable object."
And here comes the biggest mistake 20:03 Germany had in fact had negotiations with France and Britain about ending the war, but France wanted Germany to retreat out of territories it had gained during the war. Germany could've said yes and still gain massive territory from the east, but they thought they've sacrificed too much to get here. So they launched operation Michael. Allies responded with hundred days offensive and that was it.

just to point out something 'the Germans sunk the Lusitania which had 128 US citizens aboard' it was a British liner and there was obviously more people on board but when your talking about the US reason for war only the 128 get mentioned. I think alot of people just assume it was a US ship with just the 128 on board

I was Wondering if you take reaction requests? Oversimplified's Emu and Pig war videos are very funny.
I mean that arm he drew was long, but the assassin wasn't even supposed to be there and the driver took the wrong turn, so pulling off the assassination was... a long shot? (I'll see myself out)
If you want to learn more history, but also want to listen to some good music, there's a heavy metal band called Sabaton that does songs that teach about history and honor the fallen soldiers, their great history lessons (and in my opinion, really good songs), so if you want to look them up and maybe listen to some of their songs, you could end up learning some things!
oversimplified also has a lot more videos about different historical topics, so there's a bunch more to learn from this channel as well.

Well, about that "Let's be jerks!" part and sinking civillian ships. Civillian ships aren't supposed to transport ammunition, are they? So the "let's be jerks" part was played by more than one side and one might want to ask the British why they felt the need to endanger civillian ships by stocking them with military supplies.
Small arms components and casings etc. were classed as civilian cargoes and permitted to be carried by treaty. The US authorities didn't raise any objections as they loaded them, and the Lusitania was not an AMC. So, going by international law of the time, the cargo was legitimate and the ship's role was not military. I'm not saying that wasn't morally dubious to be sailing passengers with a bunch of ammo, because it was. But as far as the standards of the era went, it broke no rules.
The Germans were still entitled to capture the vessel as a prize (after which they could sink her if they wanted). BUT per Cruiser Rules they were meant to demand the ship's surrender and allow its evacuation beforehand. That they did not do this was a large reason why the independent US investigation ruled against Germany.
But ultimately this argument over the legality of the ship's cargo is a smokescreen anyway. The truth of the matter is Schwieger didn't have the slightest clue what was onboard the Lusitania. He just saw a target and hunted it down. It could have had the German High Command on board for all he knew when firing torpedoes! At no point did he weigh up the moral or geopolitical implications of firing on a ship which almost certainly had neutral American women and children on board. Schwieger had the choice. He could have demanded its surrender or just let it go. But no, he robotically decided to attack without warning a ship that was obviously going to be packed with civvies.
Had Schwieger not fired, it's quite probable the US would never have joined the war. The Zimmermann telegram probably wouldn't have constituted enough of a provocation by itself without the Lusitania having already infuriated the Americans into itching for a fight. Incidentally the Lusitania also carried German spies bound for Britain and preparing to engage in espionage. Another reason U20's actions were stupid.
@@CountScarlioni - The issue is that things always get muddled. Bending laws or breaking them... everyone who has ever done it has done it for "a good reason". No inquisitor ever turtured witches, oh no, they probably were just rescuing souls and deeply regretted the means necessary to do so. Hypocrisy is inbuilt in humans. It's a major component of who we are. So everyone does questionable things they are perfectly fine with but shout out loud and point fingers to anyone else doing the same.
I'm not sure, though, that the US wouldn't have intervened sooner or later. They were already actively supporting the war by supplying Britain with arms and the more desperate Germany became, the more likely it was that the attacks on civillian ships would increase. The Germans needed the flow of resupplies to stop to have any hope of achieving a cease-fire or better. So, if not the Lusitania, it would have been another vessel sooner or later.
@@haraldschuster3067 I very much agree with you. The war was unfortunately for the Central Powers on a trajectory that was likely only to get worse for them in the long run. There were just such large disparities in things like manpower, industrial capacity, access to world markets, financial capital etc.
And yes something would probably would have triggered US entry into the war eventually, as unrestricted submarine warfare was simply too politically sensitive a measure to the American public.
A repeat mistake by Germany in both world wars was a failure to realise their reliance on other nations for resources. They provoked Britain into WWI without calculating the devastating cost of losing access to the oceans for trade and supply. The end result was an awful starvation for a large chunk of central Europe.
Desperation can make for increasingly unwise choices in war.
Although in case of the Lusitania, it was quite an early victim in the war and Germany was not yet so backed into the corner. It's why I'm so shocked at Germany's collective mistake in targetting it.
One reason the Lusitania's sinking became so big a deal that we still debate it today of course was the sheer impact it had on discourse about the war with the general public. For the allies it was the propaganda gift that kept on giving since it overnight turned the US press entirely against the Central Powers. Some dingbat in Germany even went and cast a commemorative medal over the sinking which only caused more outrage (contrary to popular belief it had nothing to do with the German state, just a private citizen deciding to produce it). and what followed was two years of constant drip-drip of anti-German poison among the American media, making the allies job of coaxing them into the conflict ever easier. Even German Americans ended up wanting to destroy the Kaiserreich in the end.
But you're right, something would probably upset the cart with America somewhere down the line, even if U20 had hung back and let the Lusitania go by.
Anyway, that's enough rambling from me!
@@CountScarlioni - It's the same with what "officially" caused WW I. The way things were set up in Europe, it took one spark to ignite the mess. Hadn't it been Sarajevo, it would have been something else. What's truly depressing is that people didn't learn anything from it and prepared a fertile ground for WW 2. Looking over at Ukraine I wonder if this will remain contained or whether that's the spark that ignites a decade old feud where parts of the world drifted further apart rather than coming closer together with two new powers waiting their turn in the background.
@@haraldschuster3067 Yes, WWI's breakdown was always curious in that it had been assumed at the time Germany and Britain would be allies in any major European conflict. The cards of that war could have fallen in so many different ways.
What is interesting about the current situation is that Europe has all but united against Russian aggression. Even Switzerland took a side which is pretty stunning! Other than mixed messages from Hungary and their mealy mouthed President Victor Orban, oh, and Lukashenko's Belarus being a Kremlin puppet state, every other nation of the continent is of one mind. I don't think we've ever seen the European continent this united on anything! If there is a positive to all of this, then that is certainly it.
And I think I know why. We're all just sick and tired of war in Europe. Yugoslavia should have been an end of it - Leave all the horrible 20th century baggage behind for the 21st century.
But since then war has returned to the European continent three times. Russia in Georgia. Russia in Crimea & Donbas. Now Russia in the rest of Ukraine. Always bloody Russia. Or specifically, it's bloody Putin! It's like he didn't learn a thing from the lessons of the 20th century.
The rest of us in Europe are I think, just wanting to move on to something better than shooting one another. There's no justifiable reason for the European continent to be at anything other than perpetual peace now.
As for where the Ukraine war will go, and if it will cause a larger conflict... I don't know?
I hope not.
It's important Putin leaves the conflict tasting a bitter defeat though. If he's left thinking he won his war, he's going to try it again against someone else. He'll become something far more terrifying than he is now.

yes, because early shotguns werent all that powerful and soldiers hit with them rarely died, just brutalized and left with hundreds of small wounds as they slowly bled out in pain
