Most reaction channels are trash. They nod their head or chuckle and thats it, we are then watching a worse, small version or the video we care about. The more you add the better. Pausing the video and adding new information is idea. Please keep doing it.
He's being polite and considerate to his audience, and while we might think it's ok, or even better with the extra commentary, you have to appreciate how he takes everything into consideration.
Also, I despise reaction videos and channels in general, but Mr. Terry is great, and it's awesome hearing what an actual history teacher thinks of these videos.

Jean-philippe Lefebvre i feel the same way. history is one of thoss subjects in school that require a teacher to really put alot of time and energy into. most history classes in my high school were just memorizing events then a test. its sad more students are not passionate about history.

My hometown in Poland was on the border between Austria-Hungary and Russia, the entire place changed hands a lot of times. A forest right behind my house where I go for a walk whenever I’m back home is full of holes from explosives and makeshift trenches from WWI, I used to hide in these when I was a kid. Crazy to think that 100 years ago hundreds of people died there and the damage to the environment is still visible to this day.

In France we still have them too, we tend to these and give visitor a tour of the trenches in the mountains.
We even have a small cemetary where Nazi SS officers where buried by thier comarades, with some bunkers around in the mountains. (Alsace-Lorraine)

I think that one of the saddest things about this was that (if I remember correctly) Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim, the inventor of the Maxim machine gun, created the weapon as a sort of war deterrent. Apparently he figured that a gun so large, powerful, and fast-firing would basically scare people into rethinking why they were going to war.
Then nukes came into the equation. I guess he kinda, maybe, perhaps got his wish in the end???

“All Quiet on the Western Front“ (“Im Westen nichts Neues“) is a very good novel by Erich Maria Remarque (a german WW1 veteran) about the horrors about the war.
Its a book though, and isnt it in German?

I know things don’t always translate perfectly and I don’t expect anyone to explain it (please do) but, it’s weird that whoever titled the English version went with “All quiet on the western front” when “Im Westen nichts neues” easily translates to “Nothing new in the west”
If anything, I think “All Quiet-“ implies a break in the suffering rather than it being constant, inevitable, and hopeless.

As a Serbian I would like to make few corrections:
1. Group that assassinated Franz Ferdinand was called "Young Bosnia" they were made up of Serbs and Bosnians who were pro-Yugoslav nationalist their ideology was free and united south slavic nations in the balkans, they were supported and supplied from the Black Hand which was group from Serbia that made a coup in Serbia in 1903 and killed a king and brought in new dynasty and new king, they controlled half the Serbian government, but they were at odds with both the Serbian king and prime minister at the time.
2. As for the date of assassination 28-th of June, it is considered a holy day in Serbian history, as it is a day when battle of Kosovo happened in 1389, when Serbia fought huge battle against Turks. I don't want to go too much into it it's very complex topic, go check it out and "myth of kosovo" if you are interested, but its very important moment in Serbian history.
3. Considering the ultimatum: It had ten very hard demands, and Serbia accepted all of them except a demand for Austrian police and courts to work in Serbian territory arresting and putting on trial anyone they want.
And Wilhelm II, send a message to the Austrians to accept the deal. However instead of using a telegram, he used a courier. So the message didn't arrive on time.

Hi, suggestion there. Recently I watched a few series on Extra Credits channel and they were all great. Similar to Oversimplified, just with less humor but in greater detail. Those I saw and can recommend, so check one out and see for yourself:

A lot of people are asking you to look at Extra Credits videos, and they really are great especially for newcomers to the discipline. But they are subject to a lot and I mean a lot of criticism about inaccuracies, misrepresentations and just plain inept historical analysis. I would be mindful of that going in If I were you. Keep up the great work! This trend of "technical expert reacts to popular thing about their field" is one of the best things to happen on YT in a while.

@@qfuh8199 I disagree. Having an agenda means you are not trying to be neutral anymore, and thus twisting facts to suit your angle. This is bad if you are trying to give facts and historical recounts.
History is history. It should be told as neutral as possible without personal feelings (if you wanna add personal feelings to it, you can, but you have to make it clear it is your opinion).
I think extra credits showed their true colours in their terrible video analysis about how WWII games forces you to become a Nazi. That video was plastered with inaccuracies that contradicts scientific evidences and the agenda was so strong it was incredible.
Which is all a shame. I used to like extra credits alot. They got me hooked with their take on the game Spec Ops: The Line.
@@johnlimzhiyue As I learned when studying history. You will never be objective in any of your works, but you should always strive to be as objective as possible. And to achieve this you have to tell the reader or listener where you comefrom, who you are, what made you research and write about your topic etc..
Extra history has an agenda to be objective, they try to be as much as possible, but they also tell you where they come from and who researched the topic in their team and so on.
The episode about WWII games is a bad example, as it is not even a work of extra history it is a work of extra credits, their non history focused channel. there they focus on social problems, psychology and so forth.
So saying Extra History sucks at being objective because of this particular video is pretty dishonest (I get the confusion since the labeling of videos gets confusing and they combined the channels)
And usually they do a pretty goodjob in their "lies" series to go into further detail on controverse topics and or takes and explain why they went with the one they showed over maybe one with a broader appeal or longer aceptance. Always remember History as a science is ever changeing, just because a take is considered non mainstream today it does not mean that it is wrong or inaccurate.

About the ultimatum, Extra Credits made a series on the events leading up to the first world War called "The Seminal Tragedy".
In the first episode, they talk about the ultimatum and how Austria Hungary had a list of 10 demands. However the last demand was that Austro-Hungarian Police could investigate the murder.
This was a demand that they could not accept as it was essentially them giving up their sovereignty.
But their response was that they accepted all but the last demand. This tipped the international community in their support.
(Their words, though altered a bit.)

@@arnold3768 Well, even more: both Auria and Hungary were reduced to small, insignificant countries. Austria lost Czechia and Galicia-Lodomeria. Hugary lost Transylvania, Slovakia, Croatia and Bukovina.
Germany was the only country from Cental Powers that could be considered "power" after the war.

Ya, blame Germany for the war (mainly because first to use actually lethal gas, because the French sucked at it and instead made tear gas but that's a different story) while the Ottomans commit crimes like to tomorrow and the allies support, and go to war to support, state sanctioned terrorism :P. WW1 isn't the most intelligent time period in human history, it's a really cool, interesting time, but pretty much all intelligence went to war and nothing else. Personally (and as a Canadian) I blame the allies as the aggressors of WW1 and a big cause of WW2.

I visited Terezin, Czech Republic, where Gavilro Princip has held after he was arrested, and where he ended up dying from tuberculosis. I saw the cell where he was kept.
The fortress was later turned into a concentration camp/ghetto during WWII
I have really wanted to visit the Czech Republic. I have met more than a few people from there in the states and all have been very friendly and have unique view points. Plus Prague looks like one of the most beautiful cities in the world. One day I will make it out there!

When they sent an ultimatum. Serbia agreed to all but 2 things. One was that Austro-Hungary would conduct an investigation on their land in order to find all the people behind it. And Serbia refused because it did not want anyone else to investigate its territory.
19:39 Interestingly enough, the United States actually learned this lesson back in the US Civil War. A lot of that stuff went away as the war went on and the Union developed things like repeating rifles. For example, Picket's Charge was the death knell for the bayonet charge.
You mentioned appalling casualty rates and honestly "appalling" barely covers it. For instance, the Battle of the Somme cost the British 40,000+ men on the FIRST DAY. The Battle continued for six more months.
pseudo nym 60 thousand on the first day. My great great uncle was 16 and he died on the first day. Apparently an artillery shell landed directly on him and his body parts went everywhere.
My province sent a regiment to fight in the war. It wasn't part of the CEF, as at that point we were still a British Crown Colony and hadn't confederated into Canada. The regiment "fought" in Gallipoli, but they had time to turn back before they suffered heavy casualties, unlike the Australians. The rest of the war they were in Northern France.
On the first day of the Battle of the Somme, they were told to attack. However, since the artillery bombardment (which did nothing) started 20 minutes prior to the attack, the Germans were already ready for the battle, and the front 3 trenches were overflowing with dead bodies, so they had to attack from a support trench 800 metres behind the assault trench.
They went over the top, and within 15 minutes, out of the 800 men, only 64 remained. About 300 died before getting to their own trench.
A coincidence is that this happened on Canada Day, so in my province, July 1st is a day where everyone mourns the casualties on that day, but once the clock hits noon, people are on the streets waving Canadian flags and singing songs.

I loved how they covered this war since it's kind of a cluster. And another huge advancement was aerial warfare. There were men going up in what was, essentially, canvas, wire, and wood biplanes, no radio or PARACHUTE, and they were typically the fuel tank was right below them, and they had to fight in the freezing air above europe

As a Serb, I am very pleased with how you explain the situation as you go through the video. You really know your shit, and I'm grateful.
Also one thing Oversimplified didn't mention is that, Novi Pazar (an area between Serbia and Montenegro, now a Serbian city) was occupied by Austria-Hungary until 1908 with the sole purpose of not letting Serbia and Montenegro share a border. Austria REALLY didn't want Montenegro to unite with Serbia and thus giving Serbs access to the Adriatic Sea. The Adriatic Sea was part of constant fighting between Italy and Austria, which is why in the London Conference of 1912, independent Albania was created and later occupied by a certain Benito Mussolini. Serbia and Montenegro had actually occupied the Albanian lands in the First Balkan War, but were forced out by Austria-Hungary under the threat of war (the war happened anyway so.... fuck it). Because of that lost territory Serbia betrayed their former ally Bulgaria and took Macedonia, land promised to Bulgaria in the first Balkan War. That was the start of the Second Balkan War, where Bulgaria basically got fucked by all sides; Greece, Serbia, Romania, Montenegro and Turkey. All of them (except Montenegro) took lands from Bulgaria, which was part of the reason Bulgaria entered WW1 on the side of the Central Powers. Now was what Serbia did unfair? Absolutely. I cannot make excuses for my country here. Still, it gives you an idea of how complicated all this shit really was.
From U.K.: There was a surprising back story to this war, that few historians seem aware of. Just before the war, my maternal grandfather, then just a young teenager joined the Territorial Army. This was part time soldiering, they trained evenings and weekends. Like slightly older Boy Scouts, they spent Saturday nights camping and having a good time with the lads. In 1915 their unit (5th Battalion York & Lancs) was sent to France. The Battalion was to take part in many major battles, until in 1919 the surviving few were de-mobilised. Then having taken some time off to start families and return to their jobs, they reported back to the drill hall and re-enlisted in the Territorials! Our local museum is full of photos from the 1920s and 30s showing the lads out on exercise in the local countryside, with happy smiling faces! In 1939 these men, now senior NCOs were perfectly OK to return to France and do it all again! But this time without Granddad who had lost his sight. He was to spend the Blitz period, helping people home in the blackout and keeping sprits up with his jokes. He and those of his friends, I can remember, were lovely kind old gentlemen. It difficult to understand how they could have gone through that WW1 hell. But then to volunteer again, is just beyond my understanding.

A small note: Part of the reason the assassins wanted to be rid of the Arch Duke is because... well, he was a moderate. They were scared that if he was allowed to live, he would change the political situation so much that it would remove all support for pushing for independence.

I recommend everyone researching the Winchester model 1897. This shotgun was used by Americans in WW1 and gained the nickname “Trench gun” or “Trench Sweeper” as it was the perfect weapon for trench combat especially with a bayonet attachment. This gun terrified the German’s so much, they tried to have the gun banned from the war (in vain)

I would recommend extra history on the extra credits channel once you finish all the current videos oversimplified has made and I would start with extra histories first video and continue from there. They are very good. I enjoy them as much as oversimplified, if not more.

My great-grandfather was actually one of those soldiers wearing that very skull mark shown in the photographs. They were called the "Husaren Regimente" (Regiments of Hussars) and while initially conceived as shock cavalry were later reorganized and in early WW1 mainly served as forward scouts, command guards or attached to infantry for trench warfare. Even later they made up most of the logistics division once mechanization took hold. Due to the change in tactics the army command never seemed to know what to do with them so their responsibilities sometimes changed on a weekly basis. Hence why my great-grandfather though serving in the Prussian military and initially trained in cavalry charge warfare during WW1 never actually saw any fighting or a trench for that matter and only rarely even rode a horse until the war was over. Naturally even his perspective of the glories of war were shattered when he saw the state in which the other soldiers returned from the front lines.

When you talked about Russia being like an older brother to other slavic countries... That´s because of panslavism, which is an ideology to unite all slavic countries as one. This ideology persists to this day and some people are actively trying to make it happen...
Also, this ideology got a huge middlefinger to the face when Russia "liberated" Czechia during WW2...people figured out that communists are a no go and it ended up with revolution

Gavrilo Princip died of Tuberculosis, he was already suffering from TB before he assassinated the Archduke, so seeing his days are already numbered because of the disease, he chose to do a risky thing for a cause that he believed in. Therefore TB was a factor that motivated him to assassinate Franz Ferdinand.

Yeah honestly life in Austria-Hungary in the late 1880s and earlier 1900s was a golden age. People didn’t mind living in the Empire and really ignored nationalist works against the Monarchy because of the more autonomy they were receiving and how long they’ve been apart of the empire... it was the country of art and history. Once the Empire annexed Bosnia Herzegovina (which was a again a newly freed country) it shot itself in the foot.
If you think about it, that if Austria avoided Bosnia and the balkans as a whole... there would be no assassination (well that wouldn’t be really pinpointed on a serb), which would lead to even more equality among the Empire (the new king) and no World War(?). Hitler would still probably be failing in Vienna. The Croat - Serbian war wouldn’t happen. A lot of things could be way better if Franz Josef didn’t listen to Conrad.
Bosnia by itself wasn't very important, murder of Franz Ferdinand was just an excuse and not a reason for the world war.

Princip was suffering (and dying) from tuberculosis at the time he assassinated the Archduke. So he already knew he was dead either way, whether the assassination attempt succeeded or not.
