    This is a definite game changer. The Neo is still slightly quieter as slower speeds but not at faster speeds. The 2018's compatibility with the Climb gives the edge to the Kickr over the Neo. Count me in Wahoo!

  • @Fidasaind
    @Fidasaind Před 6 lety +2

    Interesting that the Kickr was slightly louder at lower power but quieter at higher (possibly due to cassette like you said). But was also funny to notice that after you finished your sprint on the Neo, the sound from freewheeling was so much louder.
    Also yay on keeping that $1200 price point! I do wish they'd at least have gone for an 11/28 cassette. 34/26? On AdZ or steep, punchy climbs? At my weight, that'd involve using the resistance slider in Zwift a bit. Then again I already tend to ride at about 90% since my trainer wheel (version 1 Kickr Snap) is 11/28 and my rear outdoor wheel is 11/32. That extra gear helps me spin my... spare tires up hills. Made me learn to hate climbing far less.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před 6 lety +3

      Sound is all flywheel speed, not power. It's a tricky one to quantify for so many reasons. I was super surprised at the Neo comparison results. Really good news for everyone that it's so quiet.

    • @Fidasaind
      @Fidasaind Před 6 lety

      The one thing I'd love to hear from Wahoo is that they are working on something to compete with the Fluxx and Dorito. My wife and I currently have 2x Kickr Snap version 1. As much as I'd love to eventually upgrade to a direct drive, $2400 for 2 Kickrs is a touch painful. Especially with previous versions being so loud. I'm not sure I could sleep through her doing an early morning ZA group ride if we had those. $1600-1800 for 2x something similarly price to the Direto would be easier for us.
      Nice to see how much Wahoo keeps improving their products! It makes me want to keep supporting them (I have my Snap, Elemnt Bolt and heart rate strap and my wife has a Snap). I'm still happy with both of our Snaps. But I assume one day, her and I will either wear them out or want to upgrade. And when that happens I'd probably look at Wahoo products first but kind of want that slightly lower price point. Then again I probably should not complain too much for how much use I get out of them. For the cost of say 1 high end video (say a GTX 1080), her and I could jump from 2x Direto to 2x Kickr 4. But I still keep hoping that at some convention I'll see a video from you or Ray talking about Wahoo releasing some "entry level" direct drive trainer.

    • @rasmuswi
      @rasmuswi Před 6 lety

      Wonder what the flywheel looks like on the Kickr. My take on your test is that the flywheel on the Neo rings like a bell. Which I just kind of verified by knocking lightly on the flywheel of my Neo. I wonder if the Neo could be made quieter by adding something to the flywheel that dampens that ringing.

  • @TooManyGooglAccounts
    @TooManyGooglAccounts Před 5 lety +1

    I've also had a faulty Kickr 2018 out of the box. Wahoo sent out a new bolt + washer + key (+£100 coupon) which did fix the knocking problem but it doesn't fix what people are calling the "drone" which in my case also involves a feet and bum numbing vibration that can shake the walls (I'm guessing unbalanced flywheel).
    When it was just about getting the new key to fix the knocking Wahoo were replying to emails in under 30 minutes. If I'd been quicker replying to them it could probably have been a 24 hour turnaround from sending them a video to installing the key. But despite being off to a racing start I haven't had any reply from them since I said the new key didn't fix the drone/vibrations.
    When I received the Kickr I couldn't adjust the height because the bolt was done up too tight and when installing the new key things that the instructions said should only take 1/8 turn were taking full turns to loosen. So it looks like everything has been screwed together much too tight and without any concern for the torque.
    Before I chose the (unsuccessful) self-repair they previously said it's a two week wait to receive a replacement that's been fixed/checked so they clearly don't even trust their own stock.

    • @TooManyGooglAccounts
      @TooManyGooglAccounts Před 5 lety

      @@gplama I got a reply from Wahoo today and they also reckon it's an unbalanced flywheel and will replace the unit. This is the first time I've seen Wahoo associate the drone with the flywheel (though at the right speed my drone really rattles the bike which I haven't seen anyone else record so maybe mine is different).
      They also said it's OK to continue riding my current trainer as it won't cause any additional damage. To me that implies they aren't worried about bearings.

      I’m having this issue too. We’re now on our 3rd replacement unit and after 200kms this 3rd unit has started rumbling/vibrating very loudly. I also had the same issue with adjusting the height as everything on the unit was done up super tight.
      I’m just about to log a ticket again to start the return process but the whole situation has been really frustrating.

    • @TooManyGooglAccounts
      @TooManyGooglAccounts Před 5 lety

      @@kindacloudy1805 The replacement I got is fine so far but I did opt to wait an extra 1-2 weeks for Wahoo to check the unit. The package looked unaltered but the tracking said it originated from the UK rather than the normal NL warehouse. The packing list also called it a "Kickr 2018 Gold" and I've never seen "gold" mentioned anywhere else in relation to Kickrs.
      I think the people getting strings of faulty units either aren't choosing to wait or didn't get the choice.

    Wow just in time Shane. Been checking out the a kicker and Neo and may have picked something this coming week. The deciding point was the noise level of the two with the Neo winning there. Really interested in the Kickr now. Hopefully Wahoo engineered that style of belt drive better than Tacx did with the flux. Saw the issues you and others had. Alignment is critical with that type of belt. There was no mention of disc compatibility as with the V3 and couldn't see that side of the Kickr. Assuming the area changed on the previous is the same on this one. Looks like this was done before you left so is there any update on availability in Australia? Ok just checked at Wahoo says mid July.

    I'm on my third, yes third 2018 V4 Kickr and that unit has now also failed. I've owned earlier Kickrs which have all been bullet proof. Wandering what on earth I've done to deserve such bad luck. I can't fault Wahoo's warranty process but a few searches online shows there appears to be significant numbers of units failing. Every one I've had seems good out of the box but after 100 miles plus of riding each unit has failed with bearing damage and clonking noises coming from the fly wheel. Wahoo need to publicly acknowledge there is an issue. Some people are very recently reporting Wahoo are now offering modification kits to swap out the woodruff assembly. If no action is taken I think the onset of bearing damage will render it a certain warranty return. I am a Wahoo fan but questioning how long it will take for them to get on top of this and what with the imminent arrival of the Neo 2, time is pressing for them.

    I am a fan and a subscriber... i enjoy your work Shane.I do have a couple of questions.
    1) What device(s) did you use to collect the data from the pedals and the Kickr?
    2) I only have 1 head unit (Garmin 520). That said, I just bought Vector 3 pedals and I already have a Kickr core. I paired the V3 with my 520 and the Core with Zwift. After a Zwift Academy workout I got Vector 3 avg power = 121 but on the Core I got avg power = 134. BIG DIFFERENCE!? I had ERG mode on and at any given moment I could see that the Vector 3 pedals were much lower than the Zwift power reading of the Core. Without a 3rd source for measuring power, how would I determine my source of truth when doing a power analysis on the V3 and the Core?
    Thank you!

      1) Typically Garmin Edge units as I have a peloton of those (820/830/520/530/1030)
      2) Comparing power numbers is tough task... and needs three or four meters to isolate things. Zwift will generate a FIT file you can download from the Zwift user portal/dashboard for comparison with what your 520 records (and using the DCR Analyzer tool)

    Shane Miller, quite a few people have experienced problems with the KICKR V4. My unit was making a clunking noise, straight of the box. Wahoo told me that the noise is caused by the “woodruff key assembly” that was manufactured out of spec. Wahoo are addressing the issue, but the flywheel on my unit also seems out of balance. Some other people also report that the bearings fail prematurely, possibly due to very high belt tension. All these issues have me off the KICKR and i’ll probably return my unit for refund. Please could you take a look into the issues You’ll find lots forum posts etc. Is the KICKR V4 still worth buying at the moment?

I am leaning towards the Wahoo kickr due to it being compact light weight and accurate and the noise is now at par with Tacx but for some reason I keep looking at the Tacx Neo. One of those reasons being the fact there is no spindown to be done on Tacx but on kickr I suppose I only need to do it every two weeks. I think I just need a nudge on the right direction. :)

      So Wahoo offered to replace my kickr within 24 hrs of contacting them with 2-3 day delivery. That's really good customer service. But in the meantime I figured out the problem. I could do a guest vlog on it for you! Basically they have a QC issue with the specific belt and bolt tension that the kickr v4 needs to work smoothly with the quiet belt. Clearly they are simply not tightening the bolts in the right order, to the right attention. They obviously are sometimes since you and others have had no issues.

    I don't know about anybody else but, a 11-26 cassette seems a little odd? Most bike nowadays come stock with 11-28 which mitigates the advantage of having it come with a cassette but not enough cogs to go up those 10-15pct. inclines. Also, in the sprint the Wahoo was less stable at the base than the Neo. But, i like the immersive nature of the Wahoo with the climb but then that's another device and more $$.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před 5 lety

      A lot of bikes have moved away from 53/39 to 52/36 or even 50/34 now up the front making the requirement for a 28 or more on the back less of a requirement (for some, it's personal preference)

    • @gplama

    • @gplama
      @gplama  Před 6 lety +1

      ok. Here's the longer reply... which eats into my Core review/ride time here at Eurobike... but just to clarify. I'll defend Wahoo here from an engineering point of view because people are getting emotional.
      1) The larger drive wheel is needed to increase the surface area of the new vertical grooved belt. Or it'd likely slip at high torque.
      2) A larger drive wheel means it'll spin the flywheel faster... so they had to increase the size of that.
      3) The internal gearing interface changes so that's the third major component + the belt that needs changing.
      4) There would need to be a calibration/verification process on all of the above if it existed.
      5) There's no five. I just numbered this to finish up. It won't happen. It can't happen. If they did, it'd be a total shitshow.
      I've done a recent video on resale of smart trainers. It's pretty good. $600 for a Kickr17? Maybe on the street corner. I see them holding value a LOT better than that. The 17 is Climb compatible.
      So there's my 2c on the issue. As I said, a number of reasons. I've also seen the internals and spoken to the designers today on this very question. I hope this helps.

      Shane Miller - GPLama sorry to make you type that out, but you know us yanks and how emotional we can get. I have no doubt that this new one is the bee’s knees, which is why I am angry that I want it so badly. 🙄

    • @lindsaycripps1597
      @lindsaycripps1597 Před 6 lety

      Prastt no issue with that type of belt as motor vehicles have been using those for years. But proper pulley alignment is critical otherwise they will jump across like the flux did. So a stiff chassis is important to keep alignment under load. The idler tension pulley looks better placed and looks to be manually adjustable. Not sure if the flux one is spring loaded to keep belt tension. If so that may be the cause too.
      Time will tell if Wahoo have nailed it.
