Magpul MOE vs CTR Stock: Detailed Comparison
Vložit
- čas přidán 29. 08. 2012
- In this video, I'lll be doing a detailed comparison between the Magpul MOE and CTR Stock. Both stocks are popular choices among firearm enthusiasts, but which one is right for you? I will be looking at the design, features, and performance of each stock to help you make an informed decision. The Magpul MOE stock is known for its lightweight and minimalist design, making it a great option for those looking to keep their rifle as light as possible. On the other hand, the CTR Stock offers a more robust design with additional features such as a friction lock system for a secure fit. Stay tuned for our comprehensive comparison of the Magpul MOE vs CTR Stock! Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more videos on firearm accessories and gear.

My MOE stock used to wobble. I removed the butt stock and put a 3 inch strip of adhesive Velcro (the soft side) on top of the buffer tube, slid the butt stock back on over the Velcro and now there is absolutely no wobble. It works perfect.
Jerimy Adams Another great tip Thank You Jerimy!
Thanks man. Good idea.
Worked for me too
4 years later and still very helpful tip. Thank you
Wow! A $1 fix to save $20-$25 ! Great idea. 👍
It’s crazy to me that I’m watching this video in 2024 and you’re talking about two stocks that used to cost $60 and $80 new when it was 11 years ago but now they cost less (around $40 and $60, respectively)-and at a time when literally everything else costs WAY more due to record inflation right now. If only everything could be dropping in price like that! 😆
Yea it's interesting how some videos age
MOE stock rattles more than a mid-90's Dodge.
Co-worker called his mid 90's Dodge, the little Dodge Rattler.
So, after mining DEEP down into the internet to find means to mount a sling to my MOE stock, and spending $50 on a bolt-on device and QD swivel, I learned that I could have saved $50 plus a bit of weight had I only stared at those slots in the stock long enough to figure out that I could have looped my sling through them. (Wiping pie off face.)GREAT video, thanks for sharing, especially with us AR newbies!!!
+jmfa57 You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
As someone who was comparing the two for upgrading my rifle, here's a little something else to consider.
Attaching a swivel mount to the MOE buttstock for a sling will run you an additional $20. Might as well pay that towards the CTR, to get the mount AND the friction lock.
Exactly what I did and try to always do. Spend the extra dollar or two to get the better part.
No more wobble on any rifle.
Sound logic. I wish I could emphasize the suggestion to get the ctr over the moe
@@johnnybbgunner2136 lp ok
I was just about to say this I had to buy one yesterday for my moe lol
This is a great video, thanks. I went with the MOE in the end. I couldn't justify the extra $20 - $25 for a friction lock. Instead I just put a centimeter square of loop side Velcro inside my MOE butstock and this removes all wobble. It makes the stock nice and solid and doesn't impede use at all.
Nice job. Quick and simple and explains everything there is to know.
Isn't it too bad the manufacturers don't do things like this themselves anymore? They just rely on people doing all their advertising for them.
Thanks. Yea, a lot of manufacturer vids and info aren't so helpful.
Brief, but to the point. Thanks for a concise video without a lot of fluff
Glad you liked it!
After watching this video, I promptly returned the MOE stock that I had ordered not too long ago, and ordered the CTR. Thanks for the explanation, needless to say I wish I had found this earlier!
😅😅
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the side by side. Often hard to tell the differences until you see them compared in this way.
Also nice 857 UTC. I have the same in standard tegimented.
Thanks. Wow, you don't see too many people that are familiar with Sinn's, let alone one one. I actually have a video review on the watch. :-) Its a great watch.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thx 4 the vid man, I went with the CTR stock, the 1st time I picked up a AR 15 I thought man this would be really KEWL if they could get git rid of the wobble of the stock, 100% happy w/the CTR
I own a U1 as well. Also own a Damasko DA36. Love the German tool watches.
Keep up the great reviews.
The CRD seems totally worth it imo. Nice comparison!
I picked up a Magpul Moe today for $23 to replace stock that came with new frontier lower. Disappointed is an understatement! 2.2 ounces heavier, harder on the digits to install and it was so sloppy of a fit I removed it and went back to the one that came with new armory complete lower at a price point of $150ish.
My ar 15 build cost with 7 full Magpul Mags (Love them), Ar stoner upper .556 (caught sale at midwayusa for $280 , utg rear carry handle sight (came with lower less buffer tube, rear pin for $50) and utg 3-12x44 compact scope (new at cheaper than dirt for $99 I got mine used on ebay for $71) for a total build and fill cost of around $640! USA! USA! :)))
Great vid, the new version would be much nicer fit. Thanks for the Video.
Just installed the CTR stock. No wobble. Plus i get the QD mount. Very happy
Thank you, I already bought and put my CTR on but now I know I need that buttpad!
Thanks for the vid, I was leaning towards the CTR and will be getting that one for my first AR build.
Thanks !! Finally I Understand !!!
+Gerry K You're welcome!
Sorry, CZcams has been changing crap around and I can't figure out how to reply to your message directly. I subbed after I saw this comparison vid of the magpul stocks. I didn't realize there were two different ones and I almost ordered the wrong one. Your comparison helped me realize this, so thank you!
The comments already covered everything I had to add. Good job, great video.
Thanks!!
To fix the wobble in the now stock use a half inch wide strip of Velcro the "FUZZY" SIDE OR LOOP SIDE. Remove stock and overhang the top end and it takes the slop right out..
Is it just the camera angle or is the CTR stock a little longer then the moe stock? Not counting the thicker butt pad.
Im actually hunting with an Ar15 and the wobble on my MOE stock drives me crazy. The CTR seem like a good, solid upgrade and fixes that problem but i think i will shim my MOE first to see if that helps.
Nice, to the point vid! Your CTR seems a lot tighter than the one I had (and before anyone comments, it was for the correct tube diameter). Have owned both, and both wobbled, the CTR perhaps a little less than the MOE, but not enough to make a difference. Sold the CTR, kept the MOE. I don't use the QD swivel stud. The standard M4 stock wobbles even more than the MOE. They both feel a lot more solid than the standard M4 buttstock, in addition to coming standard with a rubber buttpad which is great for keeping the rifle from sliding when leaned up against something.
Thanks. Yea, I'm not sure what is up with all of the various wobbles on different stocks. In the end it probably doesn't make a huge difference I suppose.
Thanks for the comparison video. I was curious and appreciate an actual side-by-side (attached to the gun) comparison.
You're welcome!
Thanks for this review, I wasn't sure if the MOE had wiggle to it or not. looks like I'm going with the CTR. Thumbs up & Subscribed.
Thanks for the sub!!
I just bought the MOE stock, put it on, and noticed the rattle. Gonna do more research on CTR stocks to see if it'd be smarter to simply return the MOE for one here in the next couple days. Thanks!
I have a ctr stock it's nice but if it's not to late return it and get the moe sl stock you will thank me later.
@@hollywoodcole3678 Thanks! Already returned the MOE for the CTR stock, so no worries. The CTR stock fits well and should work out nicely. 👍
A small patch of mole skin in the MOE stock has drastically helped eliminate the wobble I had experienced.
Great idea!
wut did I just read
Glad this helped you.
That "push/pull" should free up a little with some use. If it doesn't, take a lighter and gently expose the loops to a naked flame. It will lower the surface area in contact with the stock.
I have an M&P15 and the M&P15-22. The 22 has a very very slight amount of wobble, just barely enough to be noticed. The 5.56 variant, however, has wobble equal to that shown in the video. Also, slings can easily be attached in the MOE (Non-CTR) stock, the swivel compatibility is just luxury. So IMO, the MOE stock is your best choice.
jeez.. thank you very much. i was about to buy the MOE, then i watched this video and realised it will wobble. I wouldn't be able to stand that tbh, need to feel my stock rock solid. Going for the CTR for sure, glad to know MAGPUL noticed the fault and improved it.
Glad it helped!
@@SnareMan thank you man! while I am at it, can I ask you for a tip? Is there a specific attachment that I ought to buy if I were to mount my 2point sling closer to the pistol grip (rather than at the far end of the stock)?
@@FredBenz No problem. It's been awhile since I was in the market for that stuff, but I think there is a QD mount option at the rear of the lower there right in front of the stock.
@@SnareMan oh shit, I just realised this video is 10years old! Thanks for the tip man, wish you the best for your channel and life. Greetings from Italy 😎🇮🇹
@@FredBenz Where in Italy are you? I tried to get dual citizenship but was just a little bit outside the requirements of the Italian government
Thank you! Found your video because I'm building a rifle and trying to decide which PSA lower. Now I know - CTR.
+Mike Malone You're welcome! Glad it helped!!
The ambidextrous qd mounts for the stock are $40 alone, I think the extra $20 upfront is worth it even if you are not using qd mounts right now.
Lol. Thanks! Just found a few vids of me from when I marched in 92. Next year we're going to be a Platinum member for Friends of DCI so 9 of us (the cost isn't so bad divided) get 50 yard line seats for finals. Had a great time there this year. Go Blue!
Very good video, good lighting, great sound (I hate when people take the time to make an otherwise excellent video and you can't hear it even on max volume. For some reason that issue is rampant on CZcams).
I have the MOE on my 5.56 AR's and on my 6.5 Grendel and they are a bit wobbly but it sort of depends on my mood as to whether it annoys me at the moment.
I have the CTR on my .50 Beowulf because the stock feels more "solid" than the MOE or factory stocks. I was a little concerned about how it would hold up to the recoil but so far (about 60 -80 shots) I've not had a problem.
I'm considering putting a CTR on my 6.5 Grendel since it's more of a precision rifle and the CTR fills the bill without the more expensive PRS styles.
Well made video with relevant subject matter, thanks!
To those saying it doesn't matter because no "operator" is going to care in a firefight...this isn't Afghanistan, most people buying these are recreational shooters......mall ninjas *Sheesh*
Thanks. One of my reasons that I started making vids was to combat (no pun intended) the myriad of poorly lit, poor sound quality, dog running through, baby screaming, foul language, busy background, poorly edited, low info vids that I'd been watching. I'd like to think I have succeeded for the most part. :-)
You're welcome! I was wondering the same thing before I got them. :-)
Absolutely stellar review dude, you just earned yourself a new subscriber, thanks for the review...
Does yours have a big wobble? I almost wonder if I put a commercial-spec stock on a mil-spec buffer tube
True, you don't really 'need' it. I just wanted it. :-) It also has the sling mount on it that I use.
I have exactly both as well and the CTR fits tighter than the MOE even when the clamp isn't engaged. Which makes me feel that there is more contact area between the tube and stock and that could be the difference that counts when you need to smash something with it.
That’s gonna make no difference if you have to ‘smash something with it’.
Thanks for the comparison I was trying to figure out the difference. This helped a lot :)
Yes! it is with the 20.00 dollars. I currently have the Wobbly Globulin on my AR, And It drives me NUTS!!!
Glad I watched your vid. It's been up for a while and it seems the price of the CTR has come down in price quite a bit thankfully for me. Thanks for the vid.
You're welcome and I'm glad the prices have come down
Finally a person who reviews well. Subd sir!
LOL. Thanks! :-) What's so much different about mine?
Clear, knowledgeable speaking; No camera wobble, or constantly moving the camera around, trying to focus while attempting to hold the viewers attention. It's almost as if you knew exactly what information you wanted to convey to your audience and got right to it! Nicely done. It's really difficult, personally speaking, to watch what is supposed to be an informative video when the camera is constantly trying to focus because the camera is always moving around. Not that I don't appreciate other's attempts, but your review was superior to others for these reasons. Thank you.
MrTimesetter Thanks for the kind words. Those are a lot of the things that can drive me a bit crazy about other reviews and were a lot of the reason I decided to start making my own.
Except for the fact that he was incorrect about the CTR coming after the MOE, you mean?
CTR is basically an upgraded MOE - building and improving on the excellent old MOE.
YOu're welcome! Thanks for the comment!
I did a recent build and started off with the MOE but it lacks the quick detachable sling swivel of the CTR. I went with the CTR and a second build will also include a CTR
Saw a video where u cut a 4 or 5 inch by 1/2 inch strip out of a plastic milk jug, lay it on the buffer tube with about an inch of it folded down the end of the buffer tube, then just slide the stock over it. Worked perfectly for me.
I found this video in search of “what that hole in the back of the stock is for?” I just ordered the same 1 point with the QD’s and wanted to make sure that hole was going to take the QD. Thanks for the video
Lol. Interesting how the search works.
That has to be the cleanest table I have ever seen in my life!!! Nice rifles brotha!!!
FYI the CTR came out before any of the MOE stuff. MOE stuff is just a cheaper alternative.
Great review answered every question i had about these two stocks i haven't seen too many of your videos but i can say this you are really good at vs video's or comparison video's keep up the excellent work and thank you.
Glad you found it useful thanks! I tried to include all the info I'd want if I was watching it.
Ok for someone who uses the QD attachments, the CTR stock is the way to go because it cost me like $30.00 for a custom made QD mount for my MOE stock. If you are someone who doesn't use the QD adaptors then the MOE stock is the way to go. I personally like the MOE better. When I was in the service someone wise once told me the m4 is a tight and loose fit rifle unlike the FN FAL which is a tight fit weapon. a little wobble necessary for it to work perfectly.
Good review!
Thanks!
You're welcome. Thanks. I agree - no wobble for the win!
The wobble is normal. The rifle I deployed with had wobble too. BUT I’m glad magpul fixed it
As a beginner You'll find later you Should've bought one with a qd attachment for sling.
*Get the CTR mag310 or mag311
ok
1. is there any way to make the CTR stock "AWB" compatible? maybe like screwing it or affixing it so that its not "telescoping" or "collapsible"? my other choice at this point is the MOE fixed... but i like that Quick Disconnect swivel. being in NJ sucks. and don't say move, i cant, stationed here (military...)
I have an ACS stock on my 6940 and will be swapping it out with a CTR thanks to this video. Will put the ACS on whatever I end up deciding (complete lower or my own build) since I will put the 6940 upper on it once I get a 300 BLK SBR for the Colt lower!
I went to with the Rogers super stock. Happy with that... trying to find a butt pad that'll screw in the same holes that are in there now. Any suggestions would be appreciated . Thanks for the comparison.
Thank you for this video! I received the MOE stock for Christmas and I put it on my M&P 15, I noticed the wobble right away, I thought it was just common so I ignored it. Now that I see the CTR there is no wobble. Definitely will be upgrading to the CTR stock in the future. Thanks again!
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful!
Great comparison., thanks. I took the MOE stock that came with my rifle and taped in a cut out plastic strip from a milk jug. Would still prefer the friction lock though.
Thanks!
Thanks for the info. Like you said, I could not find a comparison vid of the two, it was either one or the other. Debating which one to put on my AK.
Thanks. Yea, I agree that's a possibility. I didn't know of the difference when I bought it.
I needed this review so bad, thank you so much
You're welcome!
The wobble would be detrimental when hunting and making noise to alert the target.
Thx for the vid, it explained the wobble problem for me I will be getting a CTR
Interestingly, when I put the MOE on my M&P I was sure I had the wrong size as I got it on and it would not budge a bit. Seemed like it was glued in place. Now its as you see it there.
Thanks SnareMan, a very nice comparison!
Dennis Johnson You're welcome! Thanks!
ATTENTION ALL MAGPUL CTR & MOE OWNERS WHO ARE LOOKING TO PIN YOUR STOCK:
Zero cost, drill one hole, its that simple. Just remove the roll pin holding the plunger assembly. Remove spring and cross bar. Re-insert plunger into stock attached to buffer tube and position length to where you want to pin. Rotate plunger 90 degrees, to where a pre-drilled hole at bottom of plunger lines up to any side of stocks roll pin hole, re-insert pin and firmly tap the roll pin to hold plunger in place. Flip the stock over and use a 3/32 drill bit inserted into the roll pin hole to drill hole into the other side of the plunger. Once hole is drilled, remove roll pin from other side and tap roll pin into the hole just drilled to pin plunger in place. You're done.
Worst case scenario buy a new roll pin (3/32 x 3/4) @ $.50 - $.60.
Thanks for the review...very, very helpful!
You're welcome!! :-)
Yea, I've questioned that as well. I'm not sure what the original one was.
HI! Very nice video. I just ordered a Palmetto State complete lower with the Magpul CTR edition, it was on sale for $10. cheaper than the moe. Thanks again.
Sounds great!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the sub!
Great video!!! straight to the point with no BS'ing around.
Nice job. Thx!
Thanks!!
what do you mean you probably guess the bump stop bouncing all around wont affect your accurate you are with your weapon.. I think you missed the main difference maker between these tow bump stops.. who cares ab connection on the stalk... The MAIN differences between two is the fact the ctr stalk locks and does not "weeble wobble" and amount a variance in between each time you pull the trigger no matter how minute or large it will def cause variances in your accuracy .. anything that you can to make your weapon consistent everytime you fire is an advantage in accuracy the difference in value is not in the connection its in the ability of consistent adjustments .. great video and great looking firearms
Definitely happy with the CTR in OD Green.
i would say you probably did, because i have a moe on my 15-22 which is a mil-spec and there is zero wobble, it's actually very tight. There is only a .02mm difference between the two, so a commercial will function on a milspec but it will have a good wobble
The only difference I could tell between the two was that the CTR had the lock. You don't really need it anyway unless you're running a .50BMG upper or you're running the gun real hard...
Buddy great video keep it up thanks from Canada 🇨🇦
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
I don't know for sure. Make sure both the rifle and stock are either milspec or not milspec.
You're welcome. Glad it helped!
Thanks for help 😊
You're welcome. Thanks for watching
Great video!! Iv been looking at both stocks and wasn't sure which one to buy.
I have both but like the CTR better. Fits great with no wobbles on my HKMR556 or any of my other AR's that Ive test fitted it to.
The Magpul STR has SOPMOD style cheek weld.
I like the CTR because I don't mind spending money on something better. Nice to have a choice of either..
I think the extra is worth the money. I agree
It’s either I’m confused or need glasses because the CTR overall even without the rubber tip still looks bigger then the MOE
Great comparison video...answered all my questions. Thanks.
Thanks! Glad you found it useful!
Peace of mind with the CTR not moving can mean a lot when you need to rely on your weapon to save your life. Knowing you have a stable platform does help.
Great Video, thanks. Im going with the CTR on my new Carbon 15.
Good video. I've been debating on getting the STR since it came out. Just not sure if it's worth it in terms of functionality and performance.
Thanks for the comparison. This one had me confused
Nice bridged optic
I hate the wobble on my MOE stock make the gun feel cheap
NevadaBrad use a strip of the fuzzy soft side of Velcro inside to fix
Is it just me for some reason, or is the qd mount swivel not able to rotate a full 360 degrees on the CTR stock? I just bought it and it does not feel right for this reason, and prefer to run my sling with the qd attachment point. It can only rotate maybe 180 degrees until a part of the swivel hits the cheek weld upper part of the stock,. Can anyone help? I would appreciate it! Or if you do not mind, any insight would be helpful too.
Excellent demonstration!
Thanks!!
Just picked up the CTR for my first build today, definitely a nice stock. Not to mention it wasn't $80 anymore but $60.
+.mlh Its great that the price has come down!
+SnareMan $50.99 on PrimaryArms.com
+SnareMan You convinced me to get the CTR in the first minute of this video.. The biggest reason being that wobble. I'm pretty set on the fact that a battle rifle shouldn't have any wiggle.
That is possible. When I first got into AR's I wasn't so bright with that difference.
