      it's also the same reason why small meteoroids and asteroids never strikes earth; they fall at such a speed, they burn away against the atmosphere. other stars like our moon, doesn't have an at atmosphere that's why it can get hit; and also the reason why the crater don't disappear, the lack of atmosphere preserves it in the vacuum of space.

      Prof Mike Merrifield (of 60 Symbols) said that bigger drops flatten at the bottom into the hamburger bun shape, as Michael described.
      They then become concave at the base, then they trap air and inflate like a balloon until they pop, into many smaller droplets.
      That cycle of droplets coalescing and popping continues until they hit the ground.

    The "tear" drop shape comes from, well, tears of course! Tears fall down the surface of the face and the pores and slight contours of skin and or hair combined with friction drag out the trailing edge of the droplet making a "tail" thus making a tear drop shape. Tears also are a bit more complex in that they are also made up of salts and oils as well as water.

    Doesn't blowing a bunch of air back at the falling drops change the shape of the drop. Logically if the drop is no longer falling as fast I'd expect it to not have a tail. I'm sure they accounted for this somehow, but would have been nice to know how.

    Has there been any experiments on the various shapes of rain drop collisions in zero gravity?

    • @Primalxbeast
      @Primalxbeast Před rokem +1

      Rain doesn't drop in zero gravity, and collisions aren't likely when there's nothing making them move. There's a video of water in zero gravity on the space station somewhere on CZcams, I think it just globbed together.

    Awesome job pronouncing Toronto properly. I’m from Toronto. Most people who are not from Toronto incorrectly pronounce it toe-ron-toe.

      Oh huh, interesting. Toe-ron-toe sounds Midwest to me, vs how I've always heard it here in the PNW as Tor-aunt-oh

      Just listen to the way Kevin Hart (and practically everyone else) pronounces it in the film, The Man from Toronto. I think I only heard one guy in that film say it like people from Toronto do.

    Tell me if my lifelong assumption is true - I've always assumed that the technical definition of a drop, when referring to weight, is the moment a droplet of water is finally heavy enough (has accumulated enough water) to fall.
