The 36 has my favourite bracelet and its El Primero movement is more reliable than in my Zenith Rainbow. The Aquagraph is a well designed tank of a watch. They're reliable and I don't mind wearing them in situations where I'd never wear a JLC or AP. Ive been a watch enthusiast for decades. As someone who owns a Tag Heuer and is a fan of the brand, it is still understandable why they are so relived. Its a mix of their overly dumbed down "mainstream" marketing and snobbery from the collector community.
    Alongside Rolex, Omega and Brietling, it is one of those watch brands that literally everyone knows. You will be surprised how many people aren't even aware of the "holy trinity" (AP, Patek and Vacheron Constantin) but are familiar with Tag. TH has really leaned in on the brand recognition and has tended to push hard on the brand and release relatively mediocre/average watches alongside more interesting pieces.
    This, alongside the snobbery of "enthusiasts" and collectors for overly mainstream watches has led to Tag being looked down by the collector community.
    It also hasn't helped that Tag tends to throw in ebauche ETA movements into the majority of their watches but charge in-house or near in-house prices. Nor has the fact that they tried to pull the wool over consumers' eyes multiple times with their marketing, such as by claiming that the 1887/Heuer 01 movement was a design they developed themselves rather than one purchased from Seiko (great movement by the way, a very impressive, modern column wheel - love it in my 1887 Carrera). But also to be fair to Tag, everyone in the market does this - from Bremont claiming a La Joux Perret movement as being "in house" to Breguet re-purposing an old Longines/Lemania movement as their "in-house" workhorse.
    At the end of the day however, I doubt Tag are losing any sleep over this - their mainstream appeal and recognition has only helped inflate their market share and - moreso than more "Premium" brands in the group like Zenith and Hublot - has strengthened its position as the flagship of LVMH's stable of watchmakers. They have more market share than Brietling, IWC and twice that of Vacheron Constantin by value.

    • @skye1868
      @skye1868 Před 2 lety +4

      Maybe online only. Tag is one of the most recognisable with Rolex. Fact. Tag has patented tech in there watches. 40 Years more history than rolex. There heritage stands alone. There connection with motoring Le mans, F1, ferrari, Porsche etc, Senna. Endorsed by Hollywood. Dicaprio, Gosling Bradd pitt. It's unrivalled. And don't forget they're owned by Luis Vuitton Moet Hennesy. The biggest luxury brand in the world.

    • @JimIBobIJones
      @JimIBobIJones Před 2 lety +4

      @@skye1868 I agree completely - it is incredibly popular with mainstream consumers.
      But with a majority of serious watch collectors, both online and offline, there is quite a lot of prejudice against the brand once it became "TAG" Heuer. Part of this is that they abandoned their traditional watches (classics like the Carrera were discontinued for decades) for more "fashiony" watches in the 80s and the 90s (e.g. Link, Kirium and the plastic F1s), and the "resurrection" of more serious and respectable designs happened quite a bit later than other brands. This leads a lot of collectors to view the TAG period as separate from the Heuer era. This is a bit unfair as TAG were not watchmakers and all of the Heuer expertise was retained - unlike say Breitling and Hamilton (or even Breguet for that matter) where only the brand name survived bankruptcy/sale.
      Part of this is unfair - Heuer had to do what it can to survive, and they aren't the only ones who made tacky watches in that period and abandoned their heritage, because that's what sold. For example, its much more "respectable" stablemate Zenith tried to scrap its tooling for the El Primero movement and other brands like Longines went all quartz in the 80s.
      '
      But they also continue to make a lot of lazy, basic watches and sell them at a premium, which is another reason why collectors turn their nose up. Their use of dodgy marketing hasn't helped. The smoke and mirrors about the Seiko design in the 1887/Heuer 01 being a prime example - there was nothing to be embarrassed about, the Seiko 6S78 movement was made for Seiko's Credor line, which sits with/slightly above tjeor Grand Seiko and is one that can stand with the very best of Swiss design. But lying about it came off as massively scummy.
      It also hasn't done as well in Asia (which now accounts for a significant proportion of the market) than some of the other mid-range brands, which has led it to fall behind Longines, IWC and even Tissot in market share.

    I got my Tag when I was 20, and it was a great choice. I sold Richemont, Swatch Group, and LVMH, so had "the hook up", but buying a Tag (and a quartz-ish one, no less!), was a smart choice for my lifestyle and income. It's taken such a beating, and keeps going strong, and coincidentally became a pretty unique release in their history. If I'd bought an IWC or an Omega I'd been eyeing, I probably would've broken it sometimes over the last decade, and may not have been able to afford repairs for it.
    Too many people buy watches with resale value as their priority, and that makes me kinda sad. While it's very cool if something appreciates in value over time, that should be a secondary priority. The most valuable asset you have is your time itself, and your watch should be reflective of the time you own it.

    I've owned/own dozens, including the Heuer that ya have on your wrist for this video. Having collected for 43+ years, spending 18+ in the business with the last 9+ of those as a certified Master Horologist, I've sold, traded, worked on and owned to many to count.
    I've covered both the pre-TAG Heur and post-TAG years, and I've covered them in depth in various FB groups, so I won't get into it here cept to say that most of those commenting have never even tried a TAG on, much less owned one.
    And no, quartz had nothing to do with it because if you go back and look at the Link Collection, which took the watch world and regular world by storm in the late 90's(in my FB coverage I go into this), and those majority of those were mechanical pieces, not quartz. Anyone that lays the blame on quartz I would immediately dismiss as they have no idea what they are talking about.
    If ya speak to people that OWNED/OWN a TAG, their quality is fine. Not perfect, though nowhere near an issue worth discussing
    Stay Well, Continued Success & drop into the groups sometime🍻

    There has been a concerted and misinformed campaign by watch snobs to not only discredit, but to help bring on the destruction of Tag Heuer. This is not based on any substantial facts or empirical evidence, but more of an emotional response to their advertising image and " Mall Watch" status. At the end of the day, Tag has tremendous history, innovative spirit and link to being an official timer to important sporting events. More people line up to defend Invicta than they do to defend Tag, which is absurd.
