  • Chapter 11: Point Extraction
    Alyx Vance enters the Vault with the intent of rescuing Gordon Freeman, only to find herself faced with indescribable phenomena and a mysterious, enigmatic entity in the final chapter of Half-Life: Alyx.
    Playlist with all completed chapters:
    • Half-Life: Alyx - Full...
    Notes:
    - There is no loot in this chapter, so I didn't bother opening most of the drawers/closets
    - Throwing the lightning and grenades at Combine is actually harder than it looks, my controllers didn't really do a great job of tracking my hand movements, which is why I opted for the "Iron Man hand cannon" approach
    Trivia:
    - The chapter title is a reference to HL2's first chapter, "Point Insertion"
    - Voicelines throughout the game from various characters (Russell, Eli, Brain-damaged vort) can be heard during this chapter, just like in HL1 just before Gordon takes the final portal to Nihilanth
    - The ruins of the parking garage from where Alyx was beamed up can be seen at 0:15, which indicates that Alyx is actually upside down relative to the ground
    - The citizens encountered in this chapter, such as at 1:39, seem to be frozen in different points of time, as they are dressed in the classic HL2 citizen garb
    - The structure that houses the G-man at 2:23 greatly resembles a virus
    - This might be a reach but I always thought the kitchen sequence at 5:14 is a homage to the film Poltergeist (1982)
    - The ability of the Gravity Gloves to become supercharged and capable of throwing Vortigaunt lightning is a neat callback to HL2's final chapters where the Gravity Gun also became supercharged (10:06)
    - The HEV Suit Charger sound from previous games can be heard at 13:30
    - It becomes very clear at 13:47 that the individual in the prison is not Gordon Freeman
    - The machinery at 13:53 channels Vortigaunt energy into the prison to contain the G-man. In HL2:EP1, it was shown that Vortigaunts were the only ones capable of interfering with G-man
    - A dead Combine Advisor can be seen outside the prison at 14:03. It is unknown how it was killed
    - The G-man is once again voiced by Micheal Shapiro, who has done every single G-man sequence since HL1
    - G-man answers Alyx's inquiry as to who he is with "Perhaps what I am" as opposed to "who I am" (15:30)
    - The location at 15:44 is unknown, it does not really resemble Xen
    - The G-man seems to "split" into several different duplicates of himself at 15:51, referencing his ability to travel across time
    - The ending of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 is shown at 16:53. Half-Life: Alyx essentially retcons this ending through G-man's manipulation
    - Small sections of HL2: EP2s ending song, "Dark Interval", plays at 16:53
    - The first time an Advisor is directly killed by the player at 17:46
    - At 17:58, Eli looks confused after being rescued not only because he literally came back from the dead, but also because Alyx has disappeared at that point in time
    - At 18:24, G-man states that Gordon has been "unable, or unwilling" to perform to G-man's expectations. This is a reference to the start of HL2:EP1, where the Vortigaunts freed Gordon from the G-man's control. However, it might also indicate that the "bad" ending of HL1 was canon, as Gordon actively refuses G-man's offer in that ending
    - The animation of Gordon picking up his glasses at 18:35 is actually truncated. A full animation exists in the game files of him waking up after getting knocked down by the Advisor and getting up before donning his glasses
    - If one is to view Gordon's model in the game files, it can be seen that his HEV suit has sustained major damage throughout his journey
    - The signature HEV suit voice is heard at 21:30
    - The title of the game fades away so that the "y" fades last, revealing that it is an inverted lambda symbol
    - The hangar bay from the end of HL2:EP2 is seen at 21:47, fully realized in Source 2
    - At 21:49, Eli exclaims "Son of a bitch and his 'unforeseen consequences'", which is both a reference to HL1's third chapter title and a reference to the words that G-man told Alyx to pass on to him in HL2:EP2
    - The return of Dog at 21:55
    - The sound of a Combine Energy Ball can be heard as Dog holds Gordon's crowbar (22:03)
    - The first and only G-man appearance outside of the ending at 22:13. Interestingly, also the first time he appears in this fashion without a suitcase in hand, and shown to visibly fade away after walking away

      I find it very interesting how they added new lore with this, like the different types of soldiers. Just makes it more interesting/wondering how it comes they changed to fewer and simpler types 5 years later. And PIty you don't fight the CPs and see Citizens only briefly. The latter, it's nice to see the more interactive like driving on bicycles, cleaning streets, etc. I say that as I worked on a Half-life fanfic back in 2015/16. They _completely_ nailed G-Man this time around.
    In HL1, they didn't have the tech for advanced face posing, so he was little more than a face texture with his Banjo-Kazooie mouth flapping around.
    HL2 G-Man, in my opinion, looked a little psychotic and expressionless for too much screen time. He looked less like a shady puppet master and more like a bossy junkie.
    But now? G-Man _bleeds_ with character. His defined, evil grins demand your respect. Instead of standing still in his monologue, he slowly walks circles around you, teleporting; breaking the laws of physics; forcing you to train your attention on his movement.
    Props to Valve, once again. They really knocked it out of the park this time.

    • @Sexy_Nutella
      @Sexy_Nutella  Před 3 lety +28

      I agree. HL2's G-man always looked a little...off (though it did definitely help with how alien he was implied to be). Alyx's G-man is 100% sinister in his mannerisms and movements. The way he circles around the player is as if he's a shark closing in on his prey.

    • @royliber3824
      @royliber3824 Před 3 lety +12

      Mike Shapiro took his G-man acting to whole new level. It feels like the more we pass through games, the stronger G-Man gets, or at least the more actions he decides to take on his own consequences. Mike completely killed it this time, better than it was in any other HL. He defined this character as we know today and I cannot think anyone else that could have voiced him better than Mike himself. Also I super appreciate him for willing to come back into this universe and especially this character after all this time... Other voice actors didn't stuck around too much but he was definitely down when Valve gave him the call.
      Now my question is... Where will HL3 take place? We can assume that it still going to be on the Borealis even tho Valve pretty much cancelled Marc Laidlaw's plans... I still think G-Man has interest with the technology that Aperture Science threw on that boat... Having an entire boat just disappearing one day from its docking station is whole new level of teleportation, and the Combines definitely want to get their hands on it. Then again Valve pretty much confirmed in the aftercredits that they sort of forgot about Laidlaw's writing and they are now working on their very own story. This game opened so many more theories on it and I love it.

    I love how the Combine are by this point terrified of Alyx, sending that many soldiers to take her down and some of them basically running at her approach.
    Also the detail in G-Man's speech, such as him turning greyscaled when he says 'inflexible' and splitting off whenever mentioning possibilities (as if checking what would actually happen) is absolutely amazing. I particularly like how the Adviser looks at Alyx just before being frozen to be killed, as if it can see her, even though she's not supposed to be visible to that timeline.

    I'm really curious to see where Valve takes the story from here. I have a feeling we haven't seen why Alyx is so important yet. She's done some pretty impressive things, sure, but nothing that really sets her apart from Gordon, Adrian Shephard, Barney etc. But both the G-Man and the Vortigaunts see her as being INCREDIBLY important and have put a lot of effort into protecting her. I think she must have some serious potential that we haven't seen yet.

    • @Sexy_Nutella
      @Sexy_Nutella  Před 3 lety +15

      I think G-man is impressed with her as she seems just as capable as the other characters you mentioned, while lacking the armour and arsenal that the "big three" has. Perhaps he's fond of her prowess in overwhelming odds, and thinks she'll be a more than capable replacement for Freeman. That being said the G-man already had expressed interest in her when she was a kid in Black Mesa, so perhaps there is something with her beyond just her physical capabilities.

    You know, I always wondered how powerful G-Man was. At first I thought he could only see the future. Knowing that saving Alyx from Black Mesa would benefit him later at White Forest. But looking at it here. I wonder if G-Man saw that there would be no way to get out of the Vault unless Alyx was a variable. Or if something happens after Episode 2 with Eli’s death created a nudge that was out of his control. And taking Alyx corrected that nudge.

    • @Sexy_Nutella
      @Sexy_Nutella  Před 2 lety +9

      From what I understand, Gordon Freeman has outlived his use to the G-man - the Vorts interfered with the G-man's plans for him back in EP1, so he sought out his "ace in the hole" - Alyx (recall that the G-man saved Alyx during the Black Mesa Incident). I don't think the G-man was worried at all about being captured, I think he was confident Alyx would be able to break him free - the events of the game and the vault serves as a test so that the G-man can prove to his employers that she is indeed a worthy replacement to Gordon Freeman, for whatever plans they had with him originally.

      @@theholygamer969 I don't think it's Gordon's fault, unfortunately. Unfortunately for G Man, I suspect that the Advisors proved to be much more dangerous to humans and Vortigaunts, and to destroy the like, he had to take Alyx as another trump card. I do not think that he is not in vain when he says about Alix's first desire that "it's too much." I think he can do it. But the Harvester will stay and simply return at one fine moment or transfer forces in other places. It is not without reason that he says that his "Employers" are unhappy with the fact that the fate of the worlds is "inflexible". I suspect what he means about Combines in general. He first asks what she wants (knowing what it will be), but lures her into a more attractive offer. Given the draft script for Episode 3 of Half Life, I suspect that G Man is operating in other places at the same time, intending step by step to pave the way for the complete destruction of the Alliance, or at least the system in which it will no longer be able to exist and expand (We do not know his plans " employers"). Why do I think so? Because he did the same thing to Earth as he did to Alix. Lured the Combines to an invasion-prepared Earth. Helped organize an uprising on Earth with the help of Gordon and, I think, planned to organize a second invasion of Earth with incomprehensible further plans for this.

Although I think it might have been distracted when the Vault crashed and a surge of energy from the containment systems might've killed it in the process.

    Thanks for your playthrough, it was great! My take on the ending is that G-man really disliked Freeman being separated and supposedly protected from him by Vortigaunts so he decided: "fine then, I'll find other ways to meet my ends". He allowed Freeman to do what he's supposed to right to the end of Episode 2, probably arranged for these two advisors to be just in the right place and time for the killing and for Dog not to be there, instantly got back 5 years in the past and allowed Combine to trap him, tested Alyx and, satisfied with the results, took her in the future to prevent the event he staged in the first place, then send 19 yo Alyx back in the past while making sure no one remembers the events of HL Alyx and took 24 yo Alyx for his purposes, hence Eli's comment.

    Gman had Gordon kill Nihilanth and set the Vortigaunt free.
    Vortigaunt are able to pause(if not stop) Gman from putting Gordon into stasis.
    Gman is also responsible for bringing the Combine to Earth. (outcome of resonance cascade)
    And he also had Gordon to destroy the Citadel. Which had created a signal (superportalstorm) to lure Combine in again. They use this to communicate, as if it's a signalfire through endless universe.
    Combine had defeated the Earth, drained its resources, turned the whole world into unhabitable wasteland, enslaved the humanity and suddenly retreated back into their Overworld after putting a puppet in charge. There MUST be a greater threat somewhere in their own reality, much bigger than what they had seen in the earth.
    Gman tells Alyx that it is a big ask to take the Combine off Earth. Not that it's employers intention, but they are unable to do so.
    Because the Gman and its employers are in war with the Combine but the war is much beyond the human understanding even though how humans are advanced in science, portals and stuff. (We are considered monkeys, apes, compared to such alien beings who can dominate time, space and dimension, our only plan to close portals is sending satellite rockets lol.)
    Again, Gman and his employers are in millenia old war with the Combine and that's why they lure them into several places as a distraction. When they lose a battle, they change realities of lesser races, when the Combine are distracted, the Gman strike from elsewhere. Combine are not apex predators of the whole universe food chain as we think and what I understand is, they are easily lured by any teleportation activity. Not because they are interested in, but because their enemies use it to emit massive signals through universe. (The borderworld Xen is in our employers control for the time being and we can use it as a weapon of war as much as we want, thanks to you.)
    Considering how a single Gman managed to reduce the whole Earth into ruin, imagine how many of them do exist to become a serious pain in the ass for Combine to deal with.
    Now that we know the Gman can use anyone as a weapon against the Combine, he uses dirty tactics who has no ethics, he doesn't even afraid of becoming prisoner(according to their plan), he might also manipulated Nihilanth's race to rebellion against the Combine aswell, which it might telling Freeman that "He will deceive you. As he has deceived me."

    • @tychusenfieldlarsson206
      @tychusenfieldlarsson206 Před 3 lety +8

      Scientists in Lambda Core knew something was keeping the portal open on the other side, and told Freeman to kill it. He found the superbeing Nihilanth, killing him did not close the portal on the Earth side, but causing it to burst into massive rift, which caused the Combine attention. Such an interesting energy could only be coming from a familiar being, which they have been hunting for a long time.

      You had me interested until you introduced the nihilistic filth rot of naturalistic evolutionism by referring to humans... "We are considered monkeys, apes," ... Advancement and transcendence is not beyond the grasp from humanity. We just have not advanced enough or had the time to reach their level. We are far from our zenith by any measure. We are only held back (in the real world) by 2 things:
      1) Cultural and moral *decadence* (which destroys the sacred transcendent value of humanity by reductionary relativism. Which ALWAYS appears at the end of great empires).
      2) Pathological and self serving "Elites" that are will to sacrifice anything and anyone to raise their position. And there's alone (like Wallace Breen).

    I recall Mike Morasky's multiple musical chatters in the Developer Commentary mode and I could tell that although he manages to fundamentally capture the sound of the franchise, he also deliberately makes sure that the intricacies in his music is different from Kelly Bailey's. While that may be disappointing at first (and TBF I still lament how he doesn't utilize silence so much in HLA), that musical distinction actually is one of the strongest tools to ensure that we completely understand that this may be an HL game, but in the shoes of our hacker gurl.
    It also is why we get the feeling of "WAAAAAIT A MINUTE, SHOULDN'T WE STAY LONGER?" the moment "Ending Triumph" abruptly transitions from his style to what is obviously a sort-of homage to "Triage at Dawn" by means of the guitar riffs and that notable chord progression. And so, voila--we stayed, and God knows that the HL community created a space ocean of happy tears right then and there, while being in the suit of our science boi again.
    There is also something I'd like to emphasize about that very title that I absolutely love: It doesn't tie in to the story at all. The ending of HLA sucks in a narrative standpoint--Alyx, the second HL character we empathize with the most, is trapped into stasis, and then the credits fly in. The post-credits is, by all intents and purposes, a cliffhanger but in another form.
    Rather, it references the entire meta, us the community, and the HL team. We kept waiting for anything HL. The devs couldn't finish a full-fledged game that they have been fully dedicated to. The series was in a standstill. But with that HLA end, the struggle ended in an overall triumph. Our confidence for the franchise is back, the devs are not afraid of HL anymore, and the series goes on just as we all do.

    • @pizzazzindoofus
      @pizzazzindoofus Před 3 lety

      Okay, I still can't shut up, so here's more.
      I'm excited for how they'll proceed with the story, and I have this feeling that they'll push for a bittersweet yet satisfactory ending instead of the completely Lovecraftian route that Epistle 3 went for. It will be a complicated journey though, especially now that our key characters acknowledge that G-Man is yet another force we must overcome, other than the possible retaliation of the Combine.
      My wish still stands that the Tau Cannon and Gluon Gun better come back, plus whatever additional sci-fi guns the devs can possible think of.
      And a Dyson Sphere, too! Of course to eliminate the potential Takotsubo, they could make the sphere destroyable by some sci-fi weapon hehe, but I JUST need to see it. Just as White Forest was pushing the limits of Source, the Dyson Sphere might just be what pushes the limits of Source 2, since it is going to be a big-ass and intricate megastructure that cost trillions of years to create.
      Also, IIRC Valve intends to make a few more HL spinoffs, and honestly IDM at all. In a narrative standpoint it enables an expansion of the lore we all love, and in a marketing perspective it allows more community discussion and yet another generation of HL diehards--just before the most anticipated home stretch.
      Lastly, I wonder what revolutionary conjunct HL3 will potentially bring. HL1 brought with it a new approach to FPS. HL2 + EPs brought with them a physics-centered engine. HLA brought with it that VR doesn't have to solely be just gimmicks and for the few. How about HL3? A Valve employee already said that it won't be in VR, so will it bring GabeN's intent of brain interfacing to the market instead? Or will it, instead of going out of the box a fourth time, be a game that caters to all the three boxes (i.e., being compatible in ALL gaming mediums as of date)--something that I think not a single franchise has ever done still? I mean I don't mind another brand new breakthrough, but the latter will also make sense--after all, HL3 will be a culmination for everyone involved, in-game and beyond.
      Okay, to end this chatter, thanks once again for the gameplays! Your playstyle is just the best way to experience this series--only second to a firsthand one, of course. :D

    • @Sexy_Nutella
      @Sexy_Nutella  Před 3 lety +1

      I do wonder how they're going to pull off HL3, if it indeed will be related to the brain-interfacing chat Gabe had a while back. Though I don't mind a traditional flat screen sequel at all. That being said HL: Alyx has ruined all other VR games for me and I'd be very excited if they did make HL3 VR only, as Valve can only further innovate from here!

      @@Sexy_Nutella SVLR hoho. Time to reply to your replies. Replyception. :^
      A VR-only HL3 is a cool option, but considering that the HL franchise has been used as conjunct with gaming revolutions, and that HLAlyx did the job for VR (not totally, unfortunately, but that's not a surprise due to current circumstances), it might be received less favorably vs. its predecessors. To kickstart a new breakthrough in gaming is a loooooot of plus points for both players and critics alike, after all.
      Can't deny though that post-Alyx VR times are rougher than expected, and it might take a longer time before VR stops being a niche and becomes a little more mainstream and super widespread. And we sort of know the primary culprit. *cough* *cough*

    So...this only adds more confusion to the way time and space work for the G_man and this series...but that was AWESOME! I loved it! even though i'm confused and perplexed beyond words...I loved it! I still don't know why he was upset and decided Gordon wasn't doing good enough though...cannonically Gordan has done..I think everyone he was expected to do so far? at least...I..think so? hrm. I've decided after seeing this i need to rethink my stance on VR games. I saw you do things here that were just..amazing, that no other type of game could do. Like..opening a car door and shooting through the window..not because its a mechanic pre-coded..but because you intuitively created cover like that. Just..wow. Thanks for this..it was an amazing experience. I could go on for pages about it..but I won't..just..so many questions, so much excitement and curiosity.

      I'm so excited for you - I had the same feelings after I finished this game for the first time as well. Glad you enjoyed this playthrough and got used to the VR gameplay :)
      So my personal theory as to why G-man wanted to replace Gordon was because he was "unable" to assist the G-man, given that the Vortigaunts are now actively preventing him from reaching Gordon, as shown at the start of EP1.
      As for the "unwilling", I took this to mean that Gordon had from the very start refused G-man's offer at the end of HL1, but G-man hired him anyway against his will (recall at the end of HL2, G-man mentions that he had given Gordon the "illusion of free choice"). So Gordon had never really wanted to work for G-man, he just didn't have the chance to refuse...until the Vorts "freed" him at the start of EP1.

  • @tychusenfieldlarsson206
    @tychusenfieldlarsson206 Před 2 lety +3

    The G-man must be freed if Gordon must be free as well, because only he knows where and "when" Gordon Freeman is. The G-man was probably "replaced" or fired by his "employers" but he doesn't want to abandon his current position so he tied the Earth's salvation to Gordon, and Gordon's freedom to himself. That's why he doesn't want the Combine off Earth. (In fact he unleashes Gordon to the Citadel and destroy it, to have a signal sent to Combine Overworld and lure them onto the Earth once again.)
    I think The G-man must have done something to piss off his Employers, and he's trying to nudge things to undo his mistake. Why else would he release Freeman out of stasis on the day Dr. Kleiner reinvented the teleportation field? And as soon as Freeman teleported, the whole thing went haywire?

    • @tychusenfieldlarsson206
      @tychusenfieldlarsson206 Před 2 lety +1

      The G-man uses Freeman as a toy whenever he wants, and puts him into a box whenever he is done with him.
      When the Vortigaunt released Freeman out of the G-man's grasp, he could no longer use him, so he went back in time, spinned sequences, and found himself another victim, fit for manipulation and ready to be fooled by emotions; Alyx Vance.

    • @Sexy_Nutella
      @Sexy_Nutella  Před 3 lety +9

      My headcanon is your latter point - the G-man created a "pocket of time" 5 years prior to HL2's events and purposely got himself captured as a "test" to prove Alyx's worth to his employers. When Alyx does indeed rise to the occasion, G-man takes her from that point of time, which lines up with the same point of time when Eli was supposed to die.

    When I was seeing that ending for the first time in Bolloxed's Channel, I was pogging the whole time, even more at the postcredits scene, just those mere seconds were worthy the 13 years waiting (;3;). But now, let's talk about G-Man, with all of this things coming up, i thought about a theory: The body of the G-Man is just a puppet. What we see of him about his appereance is just the manager, the boss, the principal director of Black Mesa (Not to be compared with the Administrator Breen, the G-Man body is in the highest position in the directive comitee of Black Mesa) Now, that's what happens: The "boss" body is being posessed by the immeasurable powers of a rebellous/mutinous Vortigaunt. We don't know yet of what the vortigaunts are capable of, but that's because they're so powerful, they must make a "repression vote" where they have highly forbidden to use their powers without any limit/control/responsibility or to be clear: Use it against the rules the vorts have organized.
    This Evil-Vortigaunt became against the vort society, betraying in some way their whole civilization, at the moment of working with his employers (Some kind of galactic/universal union wich is in an indescribable scale war against the combine), causing the vortigaunt planet (Possibly the shown in that particular scene of this final chapter 15:45; He saying "The fate of world is inflexible" makes me believe that) getting involved with that massive war, therefore getting conquered and destroyed by the scale of that conflict, having the remaining vorts to live in Xen. That betrayal made that evil vortigaunt go out of control, trying to nudge things as his own desire, bringing what he needs on his new home (The terrain, flora and fauna, Xen is just a spacial dimension, those floating islands are not natural, he practically created the Xen environment) But then, his employers noticed he was too dangerous, so they brought the Nihilanth to Xen, he arrived and dethroned that E-Vort, the Nihilanth tried to enslave him, but he couldn't bc he was the only one who doesn't supress its power, not as the other vorts. But anyways that E-Vort couldn't use his power anymore, as the enslaved vortigaunts now broke partially their "Repression vote" And now could supress the E-vort powers, imprisoning his real body (That vote was the reason the vorts didn't intervene before and now in this game when the G-man appeared again, but anyways i'm aware there are some plot gaps here, pardon me). The thing is, Black Mesa finally reached Xen, BM started studying the Xen Environment, and the BM Boss, personally wanted to study the vortigaunts civilization. That went silently wrong, as he got possesed by the powers of the supressed E-vort without being noticed in any way, as he managed to outsmart in some way the "Containment field" he was being imprisoned, freeing himself on the conscience of that random human. Still his body imprisoned in some corner of the reality, but now he could pull the strings with that new body and continue to work with his employers, his new job: To get new planets to be in that great universal war against the combine, there he met Freeman, and the events of HL took place. Now the thing is: Why a Vortigaunt? Because as I said, the vortigaunts have some secret powers we don't know yet, but in this game, we are able to observe part of their behaviour. And in this chapter, point extraction, we could see how even inside the vault, that E-Vortigaunt could use his power inside of that box, altering reality and time as his desire in that vault, that's why we see those time-space anomalies, to finally reach the G-Man room, and casually the space in there resembles a lot of the brain injured vortigaunt who was trying to send a message to Alyx, so same with this case. And also, being able to teleport his Governmnet puppet, is other of the many powers Vortigaunts do have! (As shown in the destruction of the citadel, on how they could easily save Alyx and Gordon from a deadly explosion, appearing from nowhere) And the dead advisor near the last block was trying to figure out what was G-Man exactly, the G-man was who managed to kill the advisor inside of the box, so the box has multiple layers of power supression, that's why the vault is so big. And as we know already, the only ones capable of supressing the G-Man's powers (In this case: An evil vortigaunt) are other vorts. And to clarify: Now that Gordon released them from the Nihilanth and this whole new war began, and the Vortigaunt-human alliance got made, the vorts now loose up a bit their vote, being able to use more their vortessence, but just only in specific moments and only by a short time (Like breaking the contract between Gordon and the G-Man, even saving them from the citadel's explosion, and saving Alyx's Life in Episode 2). There's a lot of other things and plot gapes that I could talk about, but with this text (Which is a Lot) I can explain in some very sumarized way my idea... I would like to read your opinion about this, and personal theory too (if you have one), no matter how long it is, haha.

Which might explain why, 5 years later, they seemed as if they were expecting him.
      Or like you said, the G-man realized he needed to replace Gordon at the start of EP1, and so created a "test" for Alyx 5 years in advance. As soon as Alyx released him from the Vault, the test "ends" and that's the last we see of that timeline.
