- Chapter 3: Is or Will Be - Part Two
After fighting through the zombie-infested underground of the QZ, Alyx emerges at Fairview Junction, just minutes ahead of the train carrying Eli Vance. To save her dad, Alyx must first contest with the Combine soldiers guarding the train platform, then figure out a way to stop the train.
Playlist with all completed chapters:
• Half-Life: Alyx - Full...
Notes:
- If Alyx shoots the Combine soldier at 0:28, he will react and look towards her but will not shoot (tested once, may be a bug)
- However, shooting at the Combine from the bridge at 0:57 will result in them returning fire on Alyx
- I did not use the fabricator at 1:24 because I knew I didn't have enough resin for the next upgrade I wanted (extended mag on the pistol)
- Combine soldiers will limp if severely injured
- The train WILL continue along its intended path if Alyx isn't quick enough with the switch. The game will then end with the following failure message:
Assignment: Terminated
Subject: Alyx Vance
Reason: Failure to preserve mission critical resources
- The above failure message is almost, if not completely identical to the failure message in HL2 if Gordon manages to destroy his buggy in the coastal levels
Trivia:
- Russel explains to Alyx at 0:28 that the reason she can't pick up weapons from slain Combine soldiers is because the weapons themselves are gene-coded for Combine use only. However, in HL2 Gordon is able to pick up and wield the OSIPR from dead soldiers
- Graffiti depicting an Aperture Science turret can be seen at 2:38. These turrets are a prominent enemy in the Portal games, which also take place in the Half-Life universe
- The track that plays at 7:44 is called "Space Ocean", and was also featured in several past games: After the Resonance Cascade in HL1, going through the radioactive City 17 tunnel in HL2, and during the first pod ride in the Citadel in HL2
- Dead Combine Advisors can be seen at 11:02
7:47 Holy... That sound is so Nostalgic... This sound is a Gaming-World Heritage.
The classic Space Ocean track ;)
You've got such an impressive fighting style. Moving from cover to cover whilst trying to get a good angle with your weapons.
Thanks! For this series I really wanted to make sure I'm not just sniping enemies from one spot all the time. I wanted to move around so that the AI can react dynamically, and ensure that I'm using all the elements in the map I can
Head crab at 8:29
“I SHOULD HAVE BETTER THOUGHT OUT THIS DECISION”
"I regret this decision!" as it falls into the bottomless pit lol
7:47 nice timing with the music
Completely unintentional haha, but thanks for pointing that out!
Alyx killed lot of advisors
I like how completely unaware she was about how big of a deal it was too haha
maybe the gene-coding doesn't react to the HEV suit? or dr kleiner found a way to incorporate an override into the suit as part of his upgrades (the suit can power up from combine cells and chargers, so there is precedent)
That's a good way to justify this plot point in HL2! Good point on the Combine chargers
Sexy Nutella that could be extended to rebels using combine weapons as well
The resistance found a way to nullify the gene coding entirely
With the Black Mesa release I like to think the scientists from BM Research Facility actually used the alien tech to built many things. Like the HEV suit recharge station. They have much more Combine / alien design in the Black Mesa remake than in the original HL1. Thus Kleiner wouldn't have to do anything but keep one of the Mk IV suits around and upgrade it (or in terms of flashlight downgrade it).

I'm surprised the Advisors were travelling by rail.
Yeah, perhaps these are "infant" advisors as Vorts mentioned that they "hatch", in EP2
Oh he feeds you AND he saves your dad? best brain-damaged vortigund friend -ever-. :D
I would want him as my friend :')
I love Gary the Vortigaunt...

It's probably just me but the Grunts AI feels so inspired by the HECU Soldiers AI in Half-Life 1.
Valve mentioned they went back and revisited the grunt AI in HL1 for reference when designing the combat encounters with the Combine in HL:A so you're right on the money with that one!
love how you had alyx "gasp" a couple times by having her hand cover mouth
Thanks! I felt like that's how Alyx would've reacted in that situation.
4:20 that was one lucky shot~
Yeah, I don't try to aim for the gas tank, but I know that if i keep shooting in their general direction it'll happen eventually
Alyx: wait is it supposed to come off!?!?
Russel: THATS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT ITS SUPPOSED TO DO ALYX!!!!
I can not tell u how hard I laughed here😂
Russell is such a gem in this game. All of his comedic bits landed for me.
10:16 I’m gunna need you to listen to the noise the train car made when it hit the wall, sounded like an alien lmfao
Somewhat! It's so ear-splittingly loud lol
8:33 A shellcrab goes to Brazil! >:D
Best way to take them out ;)
2:54 The Portal easter egg on the wall
Yup, love that they continue to acknowledge that they are canonically within the same universe
11:01 Advisors!
I freaked out when I saw them in this game for the first time. I love how Alyx and Russell didn't know how powerful these beings are, and how they just kind of nonchalantly killed a train full of them
Wait a minute. If the Combine weapons are gene coded, how the hell does Gordon use them in HL2?
Yeah haha. I was going to say that maybe the OSIPR he picks up in HL2 was unbonded, but then he also uses the mounted guns with no problem as well.
Maybe that's because everyone is somehow "coded". As you can see, at the beginning of Half-Life 2, there are these walls and citizens were raising their hands up to get in. So maybe that's the case? We know, that Gordon at the time of this sort of "coding" was at coma, so the weapons are completely ignoring "non-chiped" people, but I'm not sure how much sense it makes.
I think the resistance found a way around the gene coding, as everyone is able to use them in HL2 and later.
Lore reason: The Combine probably phased out the gene bonding technology in their weapons by the time the events of Half-Life 2 happen and went to using weapons of human design(i.e. the SPAS-12, USP Match and MP7) while still using weapons of their own design like the AR2 in limited quantities possibly due to a shortage of resources.
Real reason: because Half-Life 2 released before Half-Life Alyx and the whole gene bonded weapon concept was thought up by Valve.
wtf, on two playthroughs I didn't notice you could look down at 8:32???
Yeah, haha, it's the same area you eventually go down to rescue Eli :)

Hey! It's a drawing reference to the Turrets from the Portal series :D
Yeah, I loved that little easter egg :)
I was thinking at the end they have the body of an Advisor. I wonder if Russell could make a better leg for Eli from an Advisor Arm 😅
Advisor train
