I’m in Utah and I am so stoked! Preordered my season tickets! Sold 11,000 season preorders in 20 hours.
nah its not 11k its 20k now
@@samlittleton1491 was that when I looked last lol. But the more the merrier
Utah is the most beautiful state in the “continental” U.S.
Saame! Preordered my tickets as well and I’m super excited! GO UTAH!
moved here from vancouver and i am PUMPED
The Coyotes played hard tough to beat hockey all season. The manager put together a great up and coming team. Those young players are going to be winning to the playoffs very soon.
The PWHL starting without team names was a bad idea and Utah starting without a name is bad too. Just because the PWHL succeeded in spite of that doesn't mean that it wasn't a mistake. How much *more* money could they have made with proper team names and merch?
and that's why you don't work in the business. you think they could come up with a name, logo and all that with a solid unveil that should be timeless. within 60 days yeah right buddy.
@samlittleton1491 I never said I thought it was feasible to roll it out on time, even though they have 5 months until puckdrop, not 60 days. It's undeniable that starting the season without a name is a worse scenario than starting with one.
@@samlittleton1491 Yeah, and then look at the stupid names they come up with, like "The Kraken".
@@davidedwards6308 5 months til puck drop. but for merch and copywriting trademarking stuff takes longer than you think with legalities.
You gotta be kidding. The PWHL has been successful beyond anyone's wildest dreams and lacking team names has been a blessing in disguise, allowing the league to build a brand instead of individual team brands. Everyone says PWHL when they talk about any team or player, not "the Toronto Xs". It also shows they listen to their fans, because they went without names after universal dislike of the proposed names that leaked.
They sold far more merch than expected, to the point it took like a month for each team to restock jerseys after selling out in the first 2-3 home games, along with an expanded line of tshirts, sweatshirts, etc. Lastly, they'll sell even MORE merch when the team names and logos come out. Every fan with a first year jersey knows it's historic and collectible and is gonna buy a new one whenever they come.
p.s. And yes, Utah should take their time if it avoids stupid names like the Kraken or amateurish logos like the Coyotes childish doggie head.
Winnipeg waited 15 years for a new team (1996-2011)
I get that Phoenix is one of the top ten largest cities in America (10th - 4,845,832 population).
I also realize that Houston (5th - 7,149,642 population), and Atlanta (6th - 6,104,803 population) are larger than Phoenix and also don't have NHL teams - those are the cities in the South Phoenix is competing with to get an expansion team.
I personally feel a 2027 or 2028 date is impossible as of today.
Phoenix has no arena.
- The starting bid for land starts at $68.5 million (therefore, the closing bid will be MUCH higher)
The renderings proposed were for an area, practice facility, hotels, restaurants, a casino etc.
- the price tag for the arena is approximately $500 million
- the price tag for the entire district was approximately $3 billion
The parcel of land for auction - North of Loop 101 on border of Scottsdale Road has:
- no existing infrastructure
- no water rights
- no sewage system built
- no road access
Therefore the total cost to build will ACTUALLY be higher than $3 billion - you still need to build sewage systems, roads, and acquire water rights...those were not included in the $3 billion proposal.
Between 2013 and 2022 the Arizona Coyotes have lost more money than any other team in the NHL - $115.2 million in losses.
The Arizona Coyotes are a net loss team since 1997 - meaning the team overall LOST money over the past 28 years - they didn't generate money.
As of April 2024 Alex Muerelo's net worth was estimated at $2 billion.
- land $68.5 million
- arena $500 million
- district $3 billion
- PLUS YOU NEED ROADS, SEWAGE, WATER RIGHTS....so not $3 billion - actually quite more than $3 billion.....
- plus you need to BUY a expansion team (probably $1 billion minimum)
The last NHL team to sell was the Ottawa Senators for $950 million - the Arizona Coyotes are allegedly being sold for $1.2 billion.
So....$4,068,500,000
Four Billion, Sixty Eight Million, Five Hundred Thousand - would realistically not be enough money to build this district.
How is a team that lost $115.2 million dollars ever going to recoup those losses???
The team was overall at a net loss for 28 years - so realistically how many years would it take to recoup $3 billion?
One of the lower valued teams - Columbus generates about $30 million a year in profit.
$30 million x 100 years = $3 Billion
$30 million x 135 = $4,050,000,000
Still not enough to pay for the district and expansion team....
So Muerelo is NOT the answer.
you don't need a "district" if you build the arena in downtown Phoenix (like they should've done 25 years ago); downtown Phoenix is already a district.
I ain’t readin allat🗣️🗣️‼️‼️
As a fan who watches all the games on TV and never goes in person, which is 99% of the fans, it's better to be in a city without a team. Fewer TV blackouts.
US governments help teams with arenas and the infrastructure. Apparently a big hurdle for Canadian teams is that the governments there do not do the same
Your facts, figures and statistics do not trump the emotional wails of the fans !!!
The Utah Elk.
And the fan club is The Ilk....Book it.
Shouldn't it be Elks?
The Eskimos changed their name to Elk and I hated it
Elks
The Utah Marshals with Porter Rockwell as the mascot
Is there a link to Andrew Brewer's videos? I cannot find them after Elliotte and Jeff shouts him out
I am excited about welcoming the Utah Ice Hawks or the White Hawks. Yes, this is a real hawk if you want to look it up. The point of the NHL franchise is to have a team in Utah by the time the 2034 Winter Olympic Games come to Utah again.
Utah will succeed in the NHL. Smart move on Bettman's part on the Business side. Love hearing the NHL Board of Governors vote in favor to move the coyotes To Utah. Love hearing that. Congrates to utah & the Fan Base. Better fit for utah then Arizona. Considering Arizona main sports are FootBall, Baseball & Basketball. Got my wish. 27 years later. Next up Houston & Quebec then theirs 34.
Many of those saying the PWHL shouldn't have started until they were completely set up are also saying it about Utah. Snarkiness from Jeff not withstanding. Some are so desperate to protect the women's league from any sort of criticism.
I think the Habs maybe finished where they were expected to, but maybe not how you expected them to. They were missing Kirby Dach all year who Kent Hughes himself said they thought he was their best player in camp, and the Habs lost 36 games in 1 goal games this season. So if they can flip even 1/4 of those games to be wins, they would've made the playoffs. Maybe it's an optimistic viewpoint but at least to me, despite where they finished, they may be closer than they appear. We'll see how Marty changes his approach, or maybe doesn't, to get his team into the playoff fight.
The Washington franchise in the NFL went with Washington football club for a year before settling on the terribly named commanders. So if the NFL can do it and come away unscathed, the NHL has zero to be ashamed of. Having a destination with no nickname.
I bet that if Alex Meruelo wins the land auction and follows through with the new building that the NHL will move the Winnipeg Jets to Arizona then expand to Houston and Atlanta.
Stated online today that Arizona and Utah both will be able to see the games for free
Utah yeti! Let’s go!
Utah Yeets!
The weirdest thing to me is what happens when Alex Meurelo gets the rink done, Coyotes come back to the League with an expansion draft? So the way this franchise has played out basically gets wiped clean, they’ll be able to draft a decent team, all new admin, coaching, players, etc. that’s so weird, and almost unfair that Utah has to come into the league with the shityotes and the coyotes get to come back with a new look franchise like Vegas or Seattle, which have both been good teams and competitive teams.
Big shocker! The sawftys were wrong. Lmfao.
Try the Ribs!!!!
Are the Jets getting their history back?
Hopefully their jerseys back at least cuz since they came back they have the ugliest jerseys in pro sports. It’s so ugly

Arizona to lose its NHL franchise!! Tonight at 11!!...
Later in the newshour ...more on that massive , glowing asteroid hurtling towards Earth and the inevitable destruction of mankind sometime next week... but now, here's Wendi with a LiveEye report from Mullett Arena and the ongoing candlelight vigil for the Coyotes...
Good Lord give it a rest people.
I vote for the Salt Lake Late Saints
I swear to God it's like these two don't ever want to talk about Detroit. I was interested in seeing what they thought of the last two games they played, but instead they just talk about which non Detroit team Patrick Kane is going to go to.
Typical Toronto Homers
Mike Sullivan's man crush on Jeff Carter cost the Penguins the playoffs last year. He did better this year to a degree but in reality he sucked on Penguins after Ron Hextall resigned him.
Finally, The End Of An Error....
Mereulo and his organization have proven to be consistently untrustworthy, I have zero faith that this is going to happen.
If they are stupid enough not to use the name SHAKERS, the next professional SALT lake city sports team will
Dallas would play Vegas even if was 1 plays 8.
lets see how well they support them if they suck for 10 years like they did in Arizona
While Bettman had Winnipeg waiting for Atlanta, and didn't realign, the best reason for Utah is no real need for realignment yet. If Mereulo does succeed, it's Quebec best opportunity for a team.
It’s not Bettman though. He has to go through both the board of governors and the owners. if he hets shot down thats it. The fact NHL isn’t relocating or expanding further into Canada is the league doesn’t want to.
@Nathanielhiggerson66
Of course, he has to go through the BOG. I'm just expressing that realignment wouldn't be an issue, like wasn't in Winnipeg 🤣 For Quebec it would be great if Arizona gets another franchise.
@@allanmoore0013 oh I guess I didn’t read that through lol
Quebec with a 53%tax rate, plus federal tax,in Canadian dollars, is a no brainer. Stop the Quebec drool people.
@brianjones7660
I remember the same response about Winnipeg.
Don't worry if Atlanta gets a team, we all know it's just a matter of time before it heads to Canada
It's not really uncharted waters to have a suspended franchise. The original Ottawa Senators went bankrupt and the franchise was suspended for a year, came back to play a year later as the St. Louis Eagles and then went bust again. So it has happened. The other thing, "Oh, we got to get the team name right" is such BS. Sure, they're gonna do a whole big marketing study and focus groups and a bunch of shyster consultants are going to get rich by peddling their brand of voodoo, but if the team is good they can name them the Toilets and they'll sell merchandise. If they came up with a plain old boring name like the Utah Bears, and the team is good, is that going top make them less popular? Instead they'll come up with something they think is cool and edgy, like "The Ultimate Utah" and think they're breaking ground. That's how you end up with stupid team names like "The Wild" and ":The Magic".
Honestly I don’t think the NHL is going to expand anywhere. I feel the only way that places like Portland, Phoenix, Kansas City, San Diego, Houston, Atlanta, Charlotte, Orlando, Jacksonville, Indianapolis, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Louisville, Hartford, Harrisburg, Richmond and Norfolk to ever get teams is through relocation.
If Mereolo sucked as an owner why do they think he’ll do better a second time. he never spent any money on his roster. Why let him have another team if he isn’t going to try to win?
On top of that, he didn’t pay his hotel bills in a timely manner nor did he pay the tax bills that resulted in the team getting evicted from Glendale.
@@albertwong1182 I wonder if he paid the laundry bills. I've heard of teams that didn't, like the early NY Jets (when they were called the Titans) and they had to play in the same dirty uniforms every week, LOL.
I Boston gets exposed down the middle I want to trade Petey for Mcvoy.

Arizona is a great market? 😂😂
Utah will sell out in a week.
Arizona has been a dumpter fire for 20+ years.

my thought: The NHL is the most inept and embarrassing sports league in North America and makes it tough at times to be a fan of hockey.

The Utah Ridiculous Belief Holders
Because you don’t like their beliefs, you believe the entire state shouldn’t get a NHL team ?
What are your beliefs
@@mikelawlor1533 did i say they shouldn't have a team? No.
Hmm, like Las Vegas got the Golden Knights, the Utah team should be called the Golden Plates.
God can forgive you before it’s too late. But it’s up to you and I’ll pray for you as well.
@@RRaquello fantastic
Worst ownership in history....disgusting
What market? No one comes to Arizona games. Bottom 3 in attendance last 12 years.
how was the attendance in Ottawa with their arena out in the middle of nowhere....same situation, bad location means lower attendance numbers.
murelo is gone. He cashed out and he's not coming back. The whole thing was a con job to flip the franchise and he never had any intentions to own a team long term. He was essentially speed running the team into the ground. They weren't even paying hotel bills ffs. And the league still wants him back?? Come on. The whole "timeline" that he must fulfill to get the team back seems more like a settlement so he can't sue.
All this farce happened on Gary's watch because he is so stubborn in making Phoenix work that he'll allow anyone to own the team as long as they'll not relocate, despite the fact that this franchise has NEVER made any profit during its 28 year run. It's a FAILING business. It went bankrupt at one point!! A reminder that Gary had the league secretly pay the team's bills. Yes phoenix is a big media market but it is not a viable market for hockey. Gary wants to fail another 28 years again?
It made a profit near the end of it's existence.
you do know GB works for the owners, he makes decisions based on what the OWNERS want. Bettman and Daly are spokesmen for the owners
