The PWHL starting without team names was a bad idea and Utah starting without a name is bad too. Just because the PWHL succeeded in spite of that doesn't mean that it wasn't a mistake. How much *more* money could they have made with proper team names and merch?

    • @samlittleton1491

@samlittleton1491 I never said I thought it was feasible to roll it out on time, even though they have 5 months until puckdrop, not 60 days. It's undeniable that starting the season without a name is a worse scenario than starting with one.

You gotta be kidding. The PWHL has been successful beyond anyone's wildest dreams and lacking team names has been a blessing in disguise, allowing the league to build a brand instead of individual team brands. Everyone says PWHL when they talk about any team or player, not "the Toronto Xs". It also shows they listen to their fans, because they went without names after universal dislike of the proposed names that leaked.
They sold far more merch than expected, to the point it took like a month for each team to restock jerseys after selling out in the first 2-3 home games, along with an expanded line of tshirts, sweatshirts, etc. Lastly, they'll sell even MORE merch when the team names and logos come out. Every fan with a first year jersey knows it's historic and collectible and is gonna buy a new one whenever they come.
p.s. And yes, Utah should take their time if it avoids stupid names like the Kraken or amateurish logos like the Coyotes childish doggie head.

Winnipeg waited 15 years for a new team (1996-2011)
I get that Phoenix is one of the top ten largest cities in America (10th - 4,845,832 population).
I also realize that Houston (5th - 7,149,642 population), and Atlanta (6th - 6,104,803 population) are larger than Phoenix and also don't have NHL teams - those are the cities in the South Phoenix is competing with to get an expansion team.
I personally feel a 2027 or 2028 date is impossible as of today.
    Phoenix has no arena.
    - The starting bid for land starts at $68.5 million (therefore, the closing bid will be MUCH higher)
The renderings proposed were for an area, practice facility, hotels, restaurants, a casino etc.
    - the price tag for the arena is approximately $500 million
    - the price tag for the entire district was approximately $3 billion
The parcel of land for auction - North of Loop 101 on border of Scottsdale Road has:
    - no existing infrastructure
    - no water rights
    - no sewage system built
    - no road access
Therefore the total cost to build will ACTUALLY be higher than $3 billion - you still need to build sewage systems, roads, and acquire water rights...those were not included in the $3 billion proposal.
Between 2013 and 2022 the Arizona Coyotes have lost more money than any other team in the NHL - $115.2 million in losses.
The Arizona Coyotes are a net loss team since 1997 - meaning the team overall LOST money over the past 28 years - they didn't generate money.
As of April 2024 Alex Muerelo's net worth was estimated at $2 billion.
    - land $68.5 million
    - arena $500 million
    - district $3 billion
    - PLUS YOU NEED ROADS, SEWAGE, WATER RIGHTS....so not $3 billion - actually quite more than $3 billion.....
    - plus you need to BUY a expansion team (probably $1 billion minimum)
The last NHL team to sell was the Ottawa Senators for $950 million - the Arizona Coyotes are allegedly being sold for $1.2 billion.
    So....$4,068,500,000
Four Billion, Sixty Eight Million, Five Hundred Thousand - would realistically not be enough money to build this district.
How is a team that lost $115.2 million dollars ever going to recoup those losses???
The team was overall at a net loss for 28 years - so realistically how many years would it take to recoup $3 billion?
One of the lower valued teams - Columbus generates about $30 million a year in profit.
    $30 million x 100 years = $3 Billion
    $30 million x 135 = $4,050,000,000
Still not enough to pay for the district and expansion team....
So Muerelo is NOT the answer.

you don't need a "district" if you build the arena in downtown Phoenix (like they should've done 25 years ago); downtown Phoenix is already a district.

I think the Habs maybe finished where they were expected to, but maybe not how you expected them to. They were missing Kirby Dach all year who Kent Hughes himself said they thought he was their best player in camp, and the Habs lost 36 games in 1 goal games this season. So if they can flip even 1/4 of those games to be wins, they would've made the playoffs. Maybe it's an optimistic viewpoint but at least to me, despite where they finished, they may be closer than they appear. We'll see how Marty changes his approach, or maybe doesn't, to get his team into the playoff fight.

So the way this franchise has played out basically gets wiped clean, they’ll be able to draft a decent team, all new admin, coaching, players, etc. that’s so weird, and almost unfair that Utah has to come into the league with the shityotes and the coyotes get to come back with a new look franchise like Vegas or Seattle, which have both been good teams and competitive teams.

It's not really uncharted waters to have a suspended franchise. The original Ottawa Senators went bankrupt and the franchise was suspended for a year, came back to play a year later as the St. Louis Eagles and then went bust again. So it has happened. The other thing, "Oh, we got to get the team name right" is such BS. Sure, they're gonna do a whole big marketing study and focus groups and a bunch of shyster consultants are going to get rich by peddling their brand of voodoo, but if the team is good they can name them the Toilets and they'll sell merchandise. If they came up with a plain old boring name like the Utah Bears, and the team is good, is that going top make them less popular? Instead they'll come up with something they think is cool and edgy, like "The Ultimate Utah" and think they're breaking ground. That's how you end up with stupid team names like "The Wild" and ":The Magic".

He was essentially speed running the team into the ground. They weren't even paying hotel bills ffs. And the league still wants him back?? Come on. The whole "timeline" that he must fulfill to get the team back seems more like a settlement so he can't sue.
All this farce happened on Gary's watch because he is so stubborn in making Phoenix work that he'll allow anyone to own the team as long as they'll not relocate, despite the fact that this franchise has NEVER made any profit during its 28 year run. It's a FAILING business. It went bankrupt at one point!! A reminder that Gary had the league secretly pay the team's bills. Yes phoenix is a big media market but it is not a viable market for hockey.
