    Nobody can do the Major General like George Rose.
    I found out the saddest thing about him yesterday. He was gay and had no real partner or heir but really wanted one. So he eventually adopted a 14 year old boy in the Dominican Republic and he was going to leave everything to him. He wanted to help this young man grow up to be prosperous and teach him all about music and such.
    Several years later in 1988 the adopted boy, along with his biological father and a couple of other men tortured George Rose for 8 hours and then bludgeoned him to death. They tried to make it look like a car accident and although they eventually confessed, they were never given a trial and the adopted son was released from jail and did end up receiving part of that inheritance! George Rose’s body was dumped in an unmarked grave in some trash covered cemetery in the Dominican Republic.
    He was so talented, kind and intelligent. The man did not deserve such a brutal and tragic end

    Anyone else confused by sat a gee. I did a cursory bit of research and I think I've got it.
    More correct would be sat a gee gee as gee gee seems to be a slang for horse and sat a horse is to sit properly on and utilize a horse. So when he says rode a horse he's telling you what he meant with that nonsense turn of phrase that seems to have originated in this musical.
    Gee gee seems to be slang for horse due to gee being used in horse riding as a command at times by some groups.
    But it confused me at first and this is only speculation based on my quick research and reading of the script. Now I kind of want to research the other lyrics to see if they are clever references as well. Probably, given the legendary writers.

    Wait, I'm confused. Is the woman's father a major-general? The beginning seems to be somewhat vague on the subject, and the fact that the entire rest is his admitting that he knows nothing about military matters just confuses things further.

    • @aucourant9998
      @aucourant9998 Před 5 lety +23

      This is a recurring theme in Gilbert and Sullivan. In HMS Pinafore the Admiral got to the top by being good at office work but never went to sea
      I grew so rich that I was sent
      By a pocket borough into Parliament.
      I always voted at my party's call,
      And I never thought of thinking for myself at all.
      Chorus.
      He never thought of thinking for himself at all.
      Sir Joseph.
      I thought so little, they rewarded me
      By making me the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!
      Chorus.
      He thought so little, they rewarded he
      By making him the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!
      Sir Joseph.
      Now landsmen all, whoever you may be,
      If you want to rise to the top of the tree,
      If your soul isn't fettered to an office stool,
      Be careful to be guided by this golden rule.
      Chorus.
      Be careful to be guided by this golden rule.
      Sir Joseph.
      Stick close to your desks and never go to sea,
      And you all may be rulers of the Queen's Navee!

      @@jamesmccaghrey738 Ironically, the Charge of the Light Brigade was the result poor battlefield communications and not the intended action. Instead of attacking the Russian artillery line, they were supposed to harass the Russians trying to take the guns from the overrun Turkish artillery positions. The Russians would have been forced to abandon the attempt or be slaughtered. However the order itself was not clearly drafted, and the guy who who knew the intended plan was cut down soon after he reached the Light Brigade.

      He is a major general, and very proud of it clearly, but he knows absolutely nothing about anything related to being in charge of an army, Gilbert and Sullivan were making a not so subtle comment about high ranking military men of the time

  • @Arturo7881
    @Arturo7881 Před 3 lety +62

    I am the very model of a modern Major-General,
    I've information vegetable, animal, and mineral,
    I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical
    From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical;
    I'm very well acquainted, too, with matters mathematical,
    I understand equations, both the simple and quadratical,
    About binomial theorem I'm teeming with a lot o' news,
    With many cheerful facts about the square of the hypotenuse.
    I'm very good at integral and differential calculus;
    I know the scientific names of beings animalculous:
    In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
    I am the very model of a modern Major-General.
    I know our mythic history, King Arthur's and Sir Caradoc's;
    I answer hard acrostics, I've a pretty taste for paradox,
    I quote in elegiacs all the crimes of Heliogabalus,
    In conics I can floor peculiarities parabolous;
    I can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies,
    I know the croaking from The Frogs of Aristophanes!
    Then I can hum a fugue of which I've heard the music's din afore,
    And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore.
    Then I can write a washing bill in Babylonic cuneiform,
    And tell you ev'ry detail of Caractacus's uniform:
    In short, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
    I am the very model of a modern Major-General.
    In fact, when I know what is meant by "mamelon" and "ravelin",
    When I can tell at sight a Mauser rifle from a Javelin,
    When such affairs as sorties and surprises I'm more wary at,
    And when I know precisely what is meant by "commissariat"
    When I have learnt what progress has been made in modern gunnery,
    When I know more of tactics than a novice in a nunnery
    In short, when I've a smattering of elemental strategy
    You'll say a better Major-General has never sat a gee.
    For my military knowledge, though I'm plucky and adventury,
    Has only been brought down to the beginning of the century;
    But still, in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
    I am the very model of a modern Major-General.
