In the states we have Pop Rocks. It's the same basic principle as the soda candy, except instead of one big candy that fizzes, it's a lot of little 'pebbles' of candy. You take a handful and put them in your mouth and they start popping like crazy. I think they were invented in the 70s, and there has been an urban legend surrounding them for decades that if you put the whole bag's worth in your mouth and then drink a soda it will cause you to have a heart attack and die. That is not true of course, but it's kind of a fun thing to tell each other when you are kids.

This is probably closer to sherberts in the UK. It's just a hard candy that's made with baking soda and citric acid, so when it touches moisture it gives off CO2.

I used to buy these dagashi boxes on amazon that were pretty cheap and had assorted pieces of japanese snacks on them before covid and i truly miss them because they got harder to get and more expensives with time.
A really big fan of umaibo and jagariko.
Once one of my boxes had one called "sweet squid" (in english) and it was just a raw squid marinated in some sort of really sweet vinegar. It was weird and chewy, but it wasn't bad at all, a strange flavor i'm probably never going to encounter again.

We also have Pocky here in Canada and it's the chocolate flavour. I love this so much. My childhood friend has a box full of it at his house and he gave all of this to me. He knows because I love Pocky. That's my favorite Japanese snack of all time and it still is. Also,i'm curious about cakes in Japan because i'm a huge fan of cakes and once I eat some,I can't stop. Cake is so addictive.

Pocky isnt very famous here (Northern ireland / UK), i know what it is because im a fan of japanese culture but if i ask 100 people i know what it is, i doubt they would know, i was excited when i seen it once locally in the oriental aisle but never got it again over here. We have a similar snack called 'mikado' which as you know, is the title of the emporer of japan so clearly we stole pocky and gave it another name lol. It doesn't come in a huge range of flavours. Pocky is the best! i love this matcha tea one, had it before.

I think Pocky was the first Japanese snack I ever saw in general stores here in the United States, it is definitely the most popular - probably because it is just chocolate and biscuit which is a familiar combination in American and European snacks. Over time they have expanded to include Hello Panda, Hi-Chew, and the Chocorooms (Kinoko no yama) and Takenoko no Sato (I first found them together and tried both, but the mushrooms are more common). I could probably find others at specialty stores, but I like seeing more Japanese snacks at our local chain stores 😊

Pocky is certainly obtainable in the United States, but only the classic chocolate flavor. I had my first Pocky while in college, and I thought it was very good.
I wouldn't have looked twice at it on the shelf of my grocery store if I hadn't seen characters in anime eating it, so I'm glad I got to try it. Japanese chocolate is definitely less sweet than western chocolate, but it was still very good. I wouldn't change a thing.
Maybe someday I'll get to try the other flavors? I happen to like green tea, so maybe that's the one I'll try next.
