Why Some People Find It Hard To Support Black Owned Businesses

- I was riding to dinner with a friend, stuck between 2 restaurants, and an interesting conversation developed. Wanting to go to this Black owned spot that is known for great food but horrible service and Houston's, we opted to go to Houston's. But the magic was in the conversation that was had en route to Houston's as to why some Black owned businesses live up to the stigma of not being up to par.
People like to say "I started my business because I didn't want to answer to a boss." The reality is your customers are your bosses.
This is very true

@@prettyb1 Yes, we cannot forget about that. Thats important!! Thats one of the reasons I have never tried anything from Kylie Cosmetics. Even those who have received an empty or broken item are screwed 😕
Honestly yeah...
I also enjoy shopping local when I am able. I feel its very important especially those who live in a small area, small businesses go under thanks to big places like Walmart.
💯
We must give great service. Treat everyone as though they are spending thousands of dollars.
BIG FACTS, showing love and appreciation is KEY to a successful business
Being able to give great service is good and all, but competition is a killer. There are simply too many corporations out there with ginormous capital who have the ability to out-serve and out-price black businesses. Honestly, how many times have you patronized a black business and thought "I could get this cheaper and quicker at [insert favorite major business chain]?" This is the real problem!
@@mkoh8778 That's not an excuse for poor customer service.
@@ShelbySteele23 Yes it is, if you can be out-serviced. Your statement alone speaks to a bias you've developed as a result of your experience patronizing at major corporate chains.
@@mkoh8778 So what are you suggesting?
When you said, "Stop hiring family and friends..." HONEY I RAN TO THE LIKE BUTTON AND HIT IT 10, 20 TIMES! YOU BETTA SAY THAT!!!!
This is a strategy other nationalities use to keep costs down....this is why I'm particular about my circle..........

You have to know which family member to hire
It put Neely down in meMemphis great food tho
And stop going to pick up the kids, your laundry, your boo, get your hair nails done DURING Restaurant hours... line out the door, two people working, the other four talking or on the phone
I swear all black folks should be required to attend the Chick-fil-a School of Customer Service before they receive their business license 😂😂😂
Hell yes! I approve this message!
I would like to patronize more black owned businesses. I wish black people would branch out more into more things OTHER than food though. Black people need more than just “food.” We need banks, retail stores, places to get massages etc....
Ricketta Jackson 100% agree. I own a business and you’d be surprised here in the states and overseas in Sweden, 90% of my clientele was Caucasian or other and the odd part was I opened because there were no black salons in my town! They asked- I gave and then they tried talking my prices down and wouldn’t come! 😐 idk
Ricketta Jackson yes yes yes 🙌🏽 CITIZENS BANK is black owned
Yall say shit w little to no research. Do you even know what it consists of to establish a damn bank? Yall gotta stop having white privelaged expectations for black businesses. You really said that like a bank can be rented out of a shopping strip. Smfh and if it's that easy, why don't you start a bank? Lol
Ricketta Jackson yesss exactly tired of seeing everyone starting a boutique, lashes, hair, nails and food. This is all great but we are more than that. I want to see black in every industry
self-published black romance and fiction authors. that is all.

It wouldn't hurt a lot of these black business owners to take some business classes at their local community colleges.

🎯 Here recently I was craving tacos. They opened at 10 and I was there about 15 minutes early but I had somewhere to be so I waited..but could hardly wait 😋. I was cutting myself close on time but there I was.. Finally at the 10 doors open and they tell me thay I can get my food in about 40 minutes as they were in food prep time. TF?? Frustration and disappointment but no way to get my time back...
Agreed! It’s so frustrating to get there and they look at you like you’re the problem
So true and it’s usually their “ signature” dish that’s gone hour after they open...
There is clearly a difference between a business and a hustle. An owner can step away from a business and it will continue to function. Once the hustler stops, so does the cash flow.

As far as the price is concern I found that vendors charge black owners double so they have to charge according to see a return
Exactly I know a T-shirt blank is only a couple dollars and if you only have some text I can’t do $45. If it’s a real design, maybe. But then it’s always like $9 in shipping on top of that
Then they want it cash apped before u even get the product

I hear everything you're saying. But on the flip side, I used to be an assistant manager at a black owned bar and if I told you the amount of (Black) customers who came in with nasty attitudes first, complaining about every little thing to try to get stuff free, talking down to the waitresses who are doing everything they can (and I mean cussing them out throwing money and food in their faces), you'd be shocked.
We as customers cannot be the Karen's of black folks just because it's a black owned business either. There's no reason to be rude to customer service workers who often times are not at fault and then be like, "this is why I never go to black owned businesses." 🙄
I agree with this I hear everything he is saying as well and I totally agree with what he is saying customer service is very crucial to the success and survival of a business but I have worked in the hospitality industry and some of the rudest people are our people as well as businesses dont treat their employees well i have first hand experience with that and often times it spills over on to the customers which is an awful thing on the part of these business owners
Oh wow, hadn't thought of that. it's nice to hear your point of view as well.
Chile. I wouldn't be shocked. 😣
Nobody wants to go anywhere black or white, and sit for 30 minutes before being seen. We all are busy and have stuff going on so it's just a courtesy! Yes!!! No miserable people in your establishment!!!
This rings so true to me. As a gay black boy. Getting my hair cut has always caused me intense anxiety ever since I was a little boy because for some reason, the black owned barbershop insists on always creating an atmosphere in which I felt uncomfortable, from making quips about how I walk to literally asking me if I’m gay and laughing about it. It got so bad that I had to stop getting my hair cut and just bought a clipper and started shaving my own head. Fast forward to about a couple of years later. I found a white owned salon that had a back barber working for them. I went to him and the rest was history. His professionalism was absolutely commendable, he treated me with respect and he didn’t concern himself with how I walk or how I talked, but he focused on trying to make sure I frequent his chair often (and I do).
They don’t understand the dread of walking into a black barbershop. It is the most uncomfortable situAtion!
Wow, the fact that you had to go through that is appalling. The black community has too many issues with how they treat each other
@@db200508 yes and there is no reason for it. Even women feel uncomfortable bringing their kids there because the men don’t know how to act and make a poor example of themselves in front of that child’s mom. It’s disgusting.
@@db200508 it is very uncomfortable.
"Stop putting miserable people at the front of your business" THAT PART. And it goes for everybody.
You nailed it! There was a black owned soul food restaurant out in Maryland that had the best chicken and waffles, homemade cake, etc. The owner let his son and grandson take over the business and demoted the Latina girls who were previously managing the store very well. Those girls knew my name, knew what I wanted to order whenever I called, and were efficient. When the black owner let his son and grandson take over, they ran the business into the ground. The son was nasty and rude to people, and he would yell at customers. The grandson was 20 something, wore saggy pants, and would stand at the front counter with his friends (who worked with him) and they were all really loud and ghetto. They were slow in taking and filling orders, and eventually the Yelp ratings went down so low, they lost many of their long term customers who had been going there for at least 10 years. The owner eventually fired his son and grandson and tried to salvage his business, but the damage was done. Sad to report that this restaurant closed at the beginning of this year.
Yes. so true. I work for Disney and they do NOT play when it comes to customer service. We don't even call them customers, we call them GUESTS. I have learned so much working at Disney and I know my Hookah bar will be successful when I finally bring it to fruition one of these days, because of the guest experience I have acquired at Disney. So many people have been FIRED just for not appeasing a guest at Disney. ACKNOWLEDGE EVERYONE. WHATEVER THEY WANT, MAKE IT HAPPEN (If we don't have it, grab an iPad, and search where they can find it). ANTICIPATE THEIR NEEDS
Hookah tho, yall STILL DOING THAT 🤦🏽♀️
Disney customer service is on point, but calling people guests is strange. "Guests" don't usually have to pay 😂.

@@submissiveproviderstboth9485 Lol. I feel you. But I plan to have it in my hometown.. a small city in MS. There are NO hookah bars and every club is ratchet and one dimensional. Familiarity breeds contempt. Sometimes around our own we get too lax and unprofessional. We feel like oh, it's a brother or sister, I don't have to meet an expectation - they'll understand and I'm Black Owned - so they should be impressed by default.

Preach! I hate when I walk into a business and the staff acts like I'm bothering them by patronising them. Hell, my appointment was at 6, its 6:20 and I'm standing outside. 🤷🏿♀️
I had experiences like that too like I was bothering the business owners for trying to buy something. Lots of black owned businesses definitely need customer service training imo.
Omg. Don't even get me started on black hair dressers.
I had one that told me she had an opening at 8am, cool I’ll be there! Her shop wasn’t far from my home, I was there 7:40ish, because I left earlier to grab me and her breakfast( i was 8 months pregnant and I was a regular on and off for 10 yrs) she calls at 8:15 to say she’s running late. Fine stuff happens, no biggie. Long story short, she didn’t arrive til 11:30. My baby shower was for 2. She finished at 1:30. She would be tardy here and there but, did damn good hair..which is why I stuck around ON and OFF. After that day, never again!

I tried to support a black owned restaurant and it took 10mins for them to greet me and take my order and 2 hours to get my food. I only waited because I had went out of my way to get there and it was a nice day so I waited with the windows rolled down. Their family was coming and ordering and getting their food immediately before myself and other customers that were already waiting for over and hour. And the food was just mediocre. I wouldn't recommend the food but I was pleasantly surprised by the customer service at Trick Daddy's restaurant, Sundays eatery. I didn't expect it to be bad but it was very deliberately good. Ima need the food & the service to line up
I was just talking about this with a friend of mine today because there’s a black business nearby who had great products and is supposed to be open from 10-6 everyday. For the last month or so she has been selling out quickly and closes her doors at 2 instead of making enough product to last until closing. Then she has the nerve to not answer the phone or leave a message letting her customers know that products/ hours of operation is limited. So I understand EXACTLY why people feel this way because I felt the same way today! 🤷🏽♀️
Well, if she doesn't have the product, then there's nothing that she can do. This is the reality of black business! We are not positioned to compete with Walmarts, so you should not expect that level of service from her. Do you think she likes not being able to serve you consistently? Consider her perspective.
Mikal Odom I think her problem was the fact the owner isn’t communicating that with their customers. It only takes a simple voice recording when customers are calling letting them know she ran out of product for the day and is working on restocking or a sign in the window. Or simply changing her store hours until she is able to make enough product that lasts til 6. It’s the inconsistency and not communicating with your customers that leaves a bad taste in anyone’s mouth. When your a small business you need to go above when it comes to customer service since you can’t compete with the larger businesses.
@@antoinejackson7159 she probably was busy communicating to her distributor because had she answered, we would be hearing how she doesn't have product, ect. She clearly is communicating somehow if she knows she doesn't have product.
@@antoinejackson7159 With responses like yours, it's no wonder why black businesses fail. People expect the world of black business, but never take into consideration how hard it is to compete on landscapes not meant for blacks to be on.
@@antoinejackson7159 THANK YOU for having COMMON SENSE that's clearly not so common nowadays. She has the product. She just chooses to not make enough because she opens the very next day and does the exact same thing. She made a statement saying "the more people desire the more it will make them come back" but little does she know she is discouraging her customers from returning because I've heard the complaints on several different ocassions! And she's been doing this for months so if u cant take time to notify your customers via voicemail then how much do you value them? She thinks because she is the only black business on that strip that it makes her a "unicorn" but she will find out when people begin to fo elsewhere!

I totally agree with you Q. I live in Broward and I went out for food. Drove a little out of the way to get the food at a black restaurant and I waited 20 minutes in line (which I'm used to), but then when I got to the menu the prices were blacked out with tape or something. I thought this is weird and could only imagine it had to be price increases, which I assumed was as a result of being closed because of Coronavirus. I had to inquire about why it was blacked out and the prices of what I purchased went up between $2-$3. I think that is something they should post. It could be small things that turn customers off and somehow some of these business owners think if they are "popping" currently they will always be popping. I had a hairstylist who would schedule clients at 9 am and wouldn't come in until after 10. By the time she would get there, it would be 3-5 clients already waiting. Eating and talking on the phone while doing hair. We have to do a little better to make sure we continue to grow.

I love supporting black business especially when I received excellent service. The problem I have with some is the unprofessionalism, not operating during the hours you have on the door, the bad customer service, some are not clean or organize, not being on time or keeping their word (service businesses), and cost. Sometimes the cost of the item is alot more compare to a Target or Walmart.
You can buy black own products at Walmart and Target. Then you can still support black own businesses without poor customer services.
@@lachell257 I think what she is saying is it might be out of someone budget
Where is the collection plate because this was a WORD!! I can’t begin to think of how many times I have said “their customer service is horrible, but the food/product is on point.” I have to adopt the same mindset that if I will walk out or refuse to patronize big brand/retail stores for bad service I have to do the same for black owned. Now is this synopsis for all black businesses....no, but the old adage “one bad apple spoils the bunch” tends to ring true more times than not. It’s not that I don’t want to support the business. It’s that I don’t want to continue to tolerate bad service/protocol JUST because it’s a black owned. As consumers we have to start holding our own to the same standards as any other business or this type of mindset will continue and black business owners need to understand that your consumers have other options than the service you provide, so don’t treat customers as if YOU are doing US a favor simply by offering the service or product to us. Excellent video!!!
💚 Thank you for always talking about the topics most people like to shy away from.
I’ve been thinking about making videos for the longest and with the influx of of Buying Black right now and my over 20 years of customer service experience, I’m really thinking about starting a series about this. I think this is confirmation.

everything you said is sooooooooo true. Jamaican restaurants is the worst
Lol yes rude asf, however I have experienced rude ass customer service from all Caribbean restaurant, especially when they don’t know you are also from the islands
LOL!! I’m Jamaican. I know some of our old heads don’t like African Americans.
Well they have a culture difference.
@@prissylily25 well they need to go back to Jamaica then
Prissy but WHY?!
Also, please update your social media profiles when your business’s has changes, such as working professional phone numbers, current open and closing hours, updated product information etc.
Erykah Honey yeessss! But always want someone to shout their product out on social media! I don’t want people asking me when you’re open, closed, prices, etc
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿☝🏿☝🏿☝🏿☝🏿
Omg YASSS!!!
"Them white womens can hold on!" 🙌🏽
The worst customer service is when you’re being followed around and for that reason I will never have a problem with black owned businesses
I done with giving my money to people who want my money, use my money to pay for their kids braces, cars and shoes and spit on me. Forget them and anyone rolling with them. I will find a black owned business and pay for their kids, braces, cars and shoes first. This influx a lot of them are not prepared for. I will suggest to them some one that can assist them to bring the level of the business up and hopefully they utilize it. If not move to one of my liking.
Same, you might have to search like crazy BUT we need to put in the effort to find the good ones and support the hell out them
RIGHT...PPL DONT UNDERSTAND THIS. I HAVE EXPERIENCED POOR SERVICE AT BLCK OWNED AND PPL WITHOUT COLOR OWNED. I RATHER GIVE MY MONEY TO MY COMMUNITY THAN THOSE WISHED I'D COME THRU THE BACK DOOR
...
For how long??
It’s all in the presentation to me! 😉 Your entire ATTITUDE says it all the moment I walk in and the atmosphere! Unfortunately, black owned businesses are MORE often than not, not supported, ratchet, bad attitudes, no professionalism, poorly staffed and trained, and if YOU don’t care enough to give me quality, why should I give you my 💰? 🤷🏽♀️ just sayin...
Look... I literally just had to fire my black lawn care service yesterday. I've been reminding him for over 2 months the trim my bushes, they still were not cut as of yesterday. I have weeds popping up everywhere. I paid him to till and seed some patches in my backyard over a month ago, I've yet to see a new blade of grass. I gave him a fair enough chance but he had to go. But OAN, I was going to ming Lee for my pedicures, but I just found a wonderful black girl who has a pedicure room set up in her house and she does an awesome job!!! So I love doing business with my people...but I will cut you off if I'm spending my hard earned money and not getting what I paid for!
@ThatYadaYada Wow.... so you see exactly what I'm saying!
I went to a black owned glass company ONCE they charged my debit card twice and gave me a hard time about a refund. The women implied that her husband was talking fresh to me. Damn Sis I just wanted my car window repaired but never again did I use them
See that shit!
I would have let them know in my white lady voice that I'm calling the bank and reporting fraud and they can dispute it with them. I bet their voice would have changed lol.
Tamika Mayes I didn't even bother with talking to her. I called the bank and got my money back. I was already on fire caused somebody broke in my car while I was on vacation
I’m so glad you talked about this topic...I live in Atlanta and black owned business are big...but the service sucks, I hope businesses from Atlanta are watching your show...👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Yep. Cause I ordered from a black owned business online three weeks ago. I had to contact them about my order and when they reached back out they didn’t even have what I purchased. So now I’m feeling some type of way.
I get so sick of calling my order in and STILL gotta wait almost an hour.... and the famous excuse is “we make our food fresh with every order “ 🙄
I swear I hate when I'm not greeted. I've walked out of many a places because of that. I think we need to tell these establishments so they can do better.
And pay for a damn website. I’m going to the DM for nothing.
No lies told. Hired black, Asian and white vendors for my wedding and sadly the black vendors let me down (photographer and wedding planner). They have the gift of the gob, promise the world and charge hire prices and have nothing to show for. They also forget we are the customers and start talking as if we work for them, no respect once money has been paid. We need to do better
I damn near tugged on my edges when you mentioned ‘protocol.’ Recently, I was planning to book a lash curling appointment with a growing black-owned business. While checking out the owners insta story, I was shocked by her lack of professionalism. She was cursing a customer out for being late to an appointment, which is not rlly an issue since they expect a deposit in advance. She went as far as to put that woman’s name and Instagram up for all of us to see. You hate to see it 👀
I've been saying this for years. Having come from the restaurant industry and worked for both black and white owned establishments, the difference is what they call a culture, basically the same as a protocol. The white owned business DRILLED that culture in our head. Made us APART of that culture. Tested us on the culture. Had multiple levels of training in this culture. And when I tried to bring a culture into the black owned restaurants that I managed, there were ALWAYS resistant and it reflected in the service. Creating that culture takes a lot of time, money and effort. So essentially, it could come down to resources. Most black owners are hands on, from the construction to the opening, to the operation. Sometimes I think its the excitement of finishing and the time it takes to run AND OPERATE a business, they just dont make the time to invest in building that culture. In the white business and franchises, there are whole teams dedicated to building that out.
This comment is so accurate.
Black Owned Coffeeshop: 39th & Lennox on Facebook
There’s no point in supporting black businesses if businesses are run poorly, and than they go out of business. I’m glad someone spoke about this because it’s a conversation that definitely needed to be had.
We are a black owned business that works with companies to improve their customer experience. Perhaps we could be of service to some of these businesses.
This information is gold and needs to go viral. This is for 👏🏾ALL👏🏾BLACK👏🏾 BUSINESSES! Carribean and Africans!!!! Y'all a part of this conversation too!
Black or white or orange I'm going where I'm respected and my hard earned dollars are appreciated 💯💯🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
I think what I have experienced the most is poor customer service at some black Owned establishments. And, sometimes, they dont open at the scheduled time. I once waited outside a hair salon for 20min after they were supposed to open and NO ONE showed up. I left and went elsewhere.
Funky D I enjoyed this video. You were right on point. I go where I feel respected, valued, and treated as I should be treated. I don't have time for somebody's cousin to be looking at me crazy, not greeting me, and ignoring me.
Chile I went to a black owned corner store by my house trying to support them since they bought it from the Arabs. But when I came in, the two girls at the register were eating wings, no gloves or mask on and licking their fingers while they tried to get me to spend more than $3 in order to use my card. Now normally I just say charge the extra few cents but they acted like they had no idea what I was talking about then proceeded to start back texting on their phones. I don’t care about race, I’ll walk out of a white owned business if they’re rude but as black people we should want to treat each other w/ the professionalism that we expect from others. Just cause we’re the same race doesn’t mean we have to be too relaxed w/ each other.
Some Black business owners hold themselves to a LOWER standard when it comes to transactions amongst US.
I have walked into Roscoe's in Anaheim and watched the Black manager greet the non-Black customers with a wide, toothy smile and pleasantries. While treating US with a "seat yourself" attitude. 🤷🏾♀️
They raise their bars when dealing with non-Blacks and lower them for US. But I hold them to the same standards or I stop patronizing them on a regular basis.
Everything you said is 100% true. I HATE trying to support my people, then they turn around and treat me like they’re doing me a favor. I will always believe that everybody needs to spend an entire year of high school working fast food/customer service, or they should teach it. Once you’ve been on the other side of the counter, every time you go somewhere else you notice every single issue and how they can be improved. It also teaches you respect and how to talk to people. I just don’t like when I’m going out of my way to support and then can’t even get greeted when I walk in, or if I’m spending $20 on food but can’t get a .25 extra sauce the one time I ask. It’s the little things like that, customer service, speed of service and cleanliness that MAKE OR BREAK a restaurant/business. Thank you for this spill hunny now I’m finna go down to the rib shack where the baked beans be and get me a ole nasty plate just because you made me want some 😂
I’d love to shop black, but too many horrible experiences, with 2 exceptions
Well, you still can support black businesses by buying black products that are already in stores. For example Walmart, Target, Sephora, and Ultra are places that sell black own products.
Yessss. I love these kitchen talks. Please do more. Black owned businesses need to do better. I am the customer, you’re the one who wants my money. Even today tried to support a BOB for Juneteenth at the sound food restaurant. Called in my order and waited for over 2 abs a half hours. And the food was disappointed and not as good as the first time. I am the type to keep it real and write my yelp review and I hope the owner sees it to know they need to do better
For extra money, I do food delivery services. I decided to stop picking up at soul food wings style restaurants. When you walk in, no one greets you, the attitude and the "wait time" is ridiculous. With this side hustle, time is money. I can be on another delivery order, but no I'm still at this restaurant waiting with the cashier with funky attitude, with the long nail and playing on her damn phone. Sidenote: If you have a service business or a manger of one business, tell your employees to not be on the damn phone....thank you.
Happy Juneteenth Everybody!!!!
I'm of the belief you should give them the benefit of doubt the first time. After that, I'm done. I do the same thing for other businesses. Give them a chance to rectify the situation and if not, I'm gone. I work too hard for my money to be disrespected, unappreciated, or inconvenienced.
My first experience with a certain soul food spot near me was a lil iffy, long azz wait, the usual. Went over a year before going back and the next time, they had their ish together. Moral of the story: Growth lol. Even though I've had bad experiences, I'll continue to support my people and I try to judge businesses individually instead of putting bad experiences off on ALL Black businesses.
Preach, we as black people need to hear this, to better ourselves.
It’s about setting expectations. I’ve noticed on several sites I’ve been on today had a message saying they were a small business and orders are prepared when upon request so expect 5-7 business days before shipping. I appreciate knowing what to expect
I agree with everything that was said here. However, we also need to “reprimand” (using the wrong word here lol) black shoppers as well. As a food critic and a part time private shopper, I’ve noticed that many black customers tend to rudely and aggressively leverage or have disdain toward black establishments or black-ran establishments when that particular customer doesn’t get their way with something. For instance, protocol, policies and procedure may state something that goes against the black customer or what he or she wants, so they’ll write nasty reviews to defame the establishments or they’ll treat the staff nastily just because...I think it goes both ways between the customers and the operation of the black establishments. I say this because I can see these same customers at white establishments being told “no” about something and they will act TOTALLY different from how they acted at the black establishments....
My husband and I had this convo today. We went to support a black business grand opening today and chileeeeeee. Everybody crowded by register, nobody is greeting folks, people confused don’t know where the line is formed, nobody is directing or getting the crowd under control . The wait time was ridiculous. Nobody apologized for the wait
Nothing but FACTS!! I work in customer service and I can't stand when I walk into a business, I'm not greeted by anyone!
If you’re in the Pensacola,Florida area, please consider patronizing JoJo’s Beaty Supply for all your beauty needs. The owner is knowledgeable, professional, and most of all, she loves Black people. You feel it from the moment you walk in!
I'm so glad you did this video. I have been in similar situations where I wanted to continue to support black-owned businesses, but the professionalism was not there. I couldn't continue to do it. Any business that I support, black or non-black, has to be professional with good customer service.
You’re right! Acknowledge the customer upon entrance of your store, we like the greetings.
I’m not shopping at any business who acts like my presence isn’t appreciated no matter what race runs it. I am not spending my money at any business that I can’t afford no matter what the owner’s race is. I hunted for a black person to do my nails a couple of months ago. When I say this girl’s attitude was so nasty and Idgaf’ish, I mean it to the one millionth degree. That was it with her for me. If an Asian nail tech treats me that way, I’d be done with her too. Respect and Customer skills must be up par, or I’m gone. Simple as that. I won’t be made to feel obligated to patron any business because the owner is Black.
