- Real time strategy games are certainly not dead, but they aren’t doing stellar either. Here are new and upcoming RTS and base building games coming out in 2022 and 2023 with release dates. Some have DEMOs or playtest versions to try, and are keeping the RTS genre alive, preventing its often talked about “death”. From the AAA titles like Company of Heroes 3 and Homeworld 3, hype trains like Manor Lords and Falling Frontier to outsiders like Ratten Reich and Beyond All Reason. Real time strategy games are certainly not dead, and neither are their cousins the real time tactical games, but they aren’t doing stellar either.

Hey man, I like your videos and I'll suggest you to make videos on best mods
Such as best total war mods, best generals mods, as suggestion.
Hello Turquoise Man and thank you for the feedback, and especially on the suggestions. I will add it to my to do list! What are your favorite strategy games besides Total War and Generals?
@@perafilozof Thanks for reply man, I tell about these 2 games because their modding scene is quite active. I'd also suggest men of war/call to arms/gates of hell as actively modded games.
@@turquoisemanturk Adding them to the list :)
Space Menace is also worth looking.
I don't think I ever watched a gaming video and found so many games I haven't heard of before. I've always loved a good RTS. If only a fraction of these are good, it'll be awesmoe!
Hello Jor-El, and welcome to my channel. Thank you very much for that great feedback, I am glad you enjoyed this video and you can find many more like it on my playlist here: czcams.com/play/PLRYGjguAn0CETNi54IC0YsVNFtTdd6Ccc.html Cool choice of a nickname btw!
@@perafilozof Very true, I had no idea. Still sad no C&C Generals 2. That, or part 3 of a space RTS I can't name.
You could colonize planets, and do upgrades on them that were basic. Ship combat was cool. You built in the wells of the planet similar to Stellaris, but it was a lot faster than Stellaris. It had at least 3 factions.
@@JohnFreedman0 Sins of A Solar Empire?
Age of Empires series and StarCraft series have more monthly players combined than all of those mentioned.
Some of these are turn-based strategy games.
This is a salad of strategy games, that are either dead on release or mostly forgotten.
@@eugenijusdolgovas9278 I don't know which video you were watching, but not a single one here is a turn based one. LOL!
As a person who grew up with rts games, this gives me alot of euphoria seeing a multitude of devs taking classics as inspirations in these passion projects
Same here! I was fully "high" on that feeling as I was making this video. BTW don't miss the second part, lots more RTS games to see: czcams.com/video/ig21SWdf0OU/video.html
Long live RTS!
May it rule forever :)
@@perafilozofyes
But with actual rts features
I can only hope Homeworld 3 captures the feeling of the older games. That was really the main selling point of that franchise.
Considering how that little snippet of gameplay looked at Gamescom I think they are on the right track to do just that.
@@perafilozof for me I just hope they hit the story well. the story was so important in that game series
So very true. I hope so too. They did have years to get it right.
Well... Homeworld probably won't have that but Ephemeris does: czcams.com/video/qEvet4i_laU/video.htmlsi=IqKNt0zw2UuUKODV
It's too bad Command and Conquer gave up making good games. It's sad, really.
Well EA stopped making it a long time ago. But hopefully they will see all these new games and consider the market worth returning to.
Blame EA
I just want a C&C generals remastered
I want Westwood Studios back! Screw EA !!
Redalert 3 was good but E A games hasnt been good in like 15 years lol the original C&C then redalert and the first couple warcraft games were my jam and still are. Dune 2000 was good too
Was playing Terminator Resistance today and thought "I wonder if this universe would work as an RTS". I feel like the moderate success of the Starship troopers RTS was what got this project the go ahead.
Very possibly Dale. It's strange how fast Starship troopers faded from news and how soft it launched. I am not sure, since I haven't played it myself why it had such a small reception by the player base.
Hopefully this Terminator inspired one gets more people behind it and playing it.
@@perafilozof Starship troopers was a good game, but it didn't have a lot of staying power. They recently announced a scenario editor on their roadmap, so hopefully it will have a resurgence once custom game content is possible.
Yeah, the lack of replayability stopped it from keeping it's player population for long.
@@saphironkindris RTS campaign/single player is probably my most favorite, you can see so many details and does not heat your machine as much.
About Starship troopers , I heard there are unique inconveniences like, different squad types can't fire when there's allies in front, I heard only snipers and granadiers can shoot through allies even if there's no friendly fire activated.
Those are definitely cool details to add to gameplay. I like that. What are your favorite RTS singleplayer campaigns?
Great to see the RTS genre is still going so strong! So many fantastic looking games!
Indeed, very bright future with this many games. Thank you for the comment WPB, and check out this next list for even more games: czcams.com/video/ig21SWdf0OU/video.html
Well AoE RTS like games are definitely DEAD since 20 years.
Well no. You just have to look hard as non have a big player base
Sanctuary is the one I'm really hoping for, waiting for SupCom that's brought up to a fully-modern format. I love grand-scale RTSs, where being able to obsessively 120 APM kite a single unit to win a game goes out the window, and everything just turns into smashing two massive armies into each other. In multiplayer, it's not as frustrating to be outplayed because it's usually some strategic choice you made minutes ago that caused your issues, not someone out-tryharding you; and in singleplayer, you can and SHOULD build a big hulk-smash army and enjoy the spectacle.
Well put Angrytiger I am glad you are excited for Sanctuary! You might find some more games to enjoy on my playlist here : czcams.com/play/PLRYGjguAn0CETNi54IC0YsVNFtTdd6Ccc.html
Sanctuary looks visually a LOT like Planetary Annihilation (more complex visuly but it definitely channels the same art style) so I'll be keeping an eye on it.
Glad to hear that. I will keep you updated on major developments.
I wish Legend of the Galactic Heroes would get a strategy game.
Hello Orion Assante and welcome to my channel. I am not familiar with that game. What is it about? Setting? Lore?
@@perafilozof it’s a fantastic anime with epic scale space battles and political plots like the collapse of nations and civil wars
@@CameronAB122 sounds like my cup of tea
@@perafilozof both the original OVA and remake are good!
@@CameronAB122 Thank you for telling me, I am researching it now.
All fingers and toes crossed that Homeworld 3 accomplishes what it's set out to do, the series is one of my favorites of all time... but Falling Frontier is the dark horse I've got my eye on. The hype for it isn't even close to what it should be, I think that one is going to surprise everyone.
Hi KillaMate and welcome to my channel. Thank you for sharing your favorites. I agree on the point of Falling Frontier and also have the same hopes for HW3.

@@perafilozof Hey i checked it out and was impressed by your conclusion! I love Dune, the movie and the game, but I seriously don't think this studio is fit to do it. They already have a good enough game. Barkhan is just a waste of time and effort.
Yeah, we will see what happens soon enough. They wanted to launch it pretty soon.
Nostalgia overload! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

The Command & Conquer franchise, Battle Realms, and Warcraft were my RTS bread and butter back when I was like 9 or 10 and we have a family computer than runs on Windows 7 with no graphics card or any other fancy bells and whistles, and were the only time I got to play is I sneak out of bed in around midnight just to play for a couple hours with the volume set 0 cuz of the Windows startup and logoff sounds waking the others.

It will be interesting to see what EA does with the C&C games after the good reception the last remaster had. Hope dies last :)
ASs for Heroes of Might and Magic... I don't even know what they are trying to do anymore. It's such a simple formula... Did you play Songs of Conquest? It's like the original Heroes!

@@kirilllybashev2748 Good to hear! Indeed, a good game like that is hard to find, few developers spend such effort on them.
@@perafilozof What is the strategy game you want most of all to continued or redone?
@@kirilllybashev2748 My kingdom for Warcraft 4 or Ground Control 3, Also a proper sequel to the original Dawn of War, World in Conflict, Battle for Middle-earth,
Age of Mythology, Rise of Nations and a bunch more.
Dorf RTS reminds me a little of the Brazilian RTS "Outlive", with its proportionately larger buildings and the post-apocalyptic vibe.
Oh wow, never heard of that one, I will look it up. Thank you for the comment! Which of these are you most looking forward to?
@@perafilozof I wouldn't get my hopes too high, I enjoyed Outlive as a kid, but my options back then were a lot more limited, lol. I always liked the visual design, though, the robot faction was sleek and futuristic, and the human faction looked sorta 80s/90s postapocalypse, if that makes sense. They also had some neat ideas with a power grid to power buildings and they did a good job of making the unit voice lines stand out from each other (clearly inspired by Blizzard in that regard), but beyond that I don't think it has too much to impress with.
As for these new games, I am stoked about Homeworld 3 (cautiously), Manor Lords looks intriguing. HOWEVER, one game you talked about which I haven't heard about before is Dust Front. It's visual style is FANTASTIC. I like the slightly cartoony texture on everything, which makes it easier to make out units from background even when everything is miserable and grey. It looks as if someone took a Beksinski, Giger or John Blanche painting and made a game out of it. Gorgeous and miserable.
Hi again, I am glad to have surprised you with Dust Front. It is indeed rarely shown as it's done by a single lone dude and he has no marketing. But the game is indeed looking stunning and has great gameplay.
Thank you very much for the description of Outlive, sounds like something I would have wanted to play.
Thank You, it was really good! Gave a lot of looking forward to games!

YOU GOT A NEW SUBSCRIBER! My favorite PC game genre, REAL TIME STRATEGY! It is not enough for this genre to survive. This genre was the most played and the best genre during the late 90's and early 2000's. When you ask what game is the most played in the 90's and early 2000's it is the RTS genre including the Simulation Genre mostly City Building games like Sim City. RTS and Simulation are the most popular games before the MMO RPG and FPS exploded in popularity. RTS and Simulation and CRPG the party based RPG should become mainstream and the king of games again! RTS must become widely popular again. Many players had enough of the RPG craze now a days. Every game have a RPG mechanic in it mistaken by many people because it has RPG mechanics calling the game RPG. We need to bring back the other ALMOST DEAD GENRES that was popular before!

I would play Crossfire Legion but there is never more than 50 players online so I never manage to play an MP match unless I invite some friend to play with.
My favorite RTS a kid was Paraworld. A game that seems to have been forgotten. I can see why as it felt particularly niche with dinosaurs. Anyways, good video! (C&C Generals was after that and most modern game recently is Northgard)
Hello AnimatedReality and welcome to my channel. I must admit it's not often my viewers post about a game I never heard of before! Tempest Rising looking very interesting.
Been a while since we had a new C&C style game that can hold a candle to the older C&C games(up to and including C&C3 TW and KW,imo the the peak of the franchise),Tempest RIsing has a long road ahead of it and it may fail to be anywhere as good, but I do see potential.
Hi and welcome to my channel. I am glad to see you too are optimistic about this game! You can see much more info about it in my other video: czcams.com/video/MUuwXVG4ooY/video.html
Its a complete rip-off and i have zero confidence in the devs considering how arrogant they are about plagiarizing C&C Tiberian Dawn
@@xGoodOldSmurfehx Hmm, interesting outlook, but ok, I get that to a certain point. Still, even if they are, why would it be bad?
@@perafilozof Because any self-respecting gamer will not be encouraging the industry to have disgusting anti-consumer behavior like that?
Or if you need a reason as a C&C fan: maybe because the utter lack of guilty consciousness, respect and absolute lack of creativity and originality from the devs do not warrant the money?
Or it could also be that as a RTS fan, a abomination of a hybrid between Company of Heroes and C&C with poor graphic refinement is going to be of subpar quality and flop unless everyone gets caught in the hype and ensure that their product keeps them afloat long enough to cash in on a fanbase AKA abuse and milk a fanbase by toying with their hopes
Pick your poison, for me its all of the above and im utterly disgusted by the product and especially the devs who have no shame in openly looking at it as their birthrights as if they were the creators of C&C itself and had every rights to copy-paste everything
These guys went straight on my boycott list and their product isnt even out yet, its THAT bad of a plagiarism

Purple war does looks rather interesting to say the least. It does gives out the vibes of classic Warcraft. And i am really curious too to see how the stargate will play out too.
But i feel like you are right a bit on the previous games that has set the scale a bit too high, and want to say this: We gotta give these games a proper chance first, before we compare them to it. Like seriously, the whole deal will show how good they are, the moment we really test them out. The big titles are great, but they are forgotten from their "owners" and left them to die slowly in life support. So i think we should give the new titles a chance to blossom to something new, as long ofcourse the devs of these titles do take the right course too, and create things for us to enjoy and play, to give us a reason to support them, and not put endless monetization and locked content to pay to win. if they do that, then yeah, they can say goodbye to their "hard work"
Hello Xeralex Dragonheart, welcome to my channel and thank you for raising those important points. Certainly there are a set of games which are simply done, and devs more onto new projects. Hi lukas9827 and welcome to my channel. Thank you for the comment. I wouldn't go as far as to call them 1:1 copies, but I do agree some of these games take their inspiration a bit too literary.

Spellforce 3 and its expansions are a decent single player RTS-RPG story experience.
Hello FutureTechie, that is indeed a very interesting game. I played the original and the the sequel but the third one changes this a lot. The new turn based one is a really shift in gameplay too. Which one of these is your top pick for the future?
I was thinking of *Battle zone* or *Machines* those 2 are amazing RTS where you could scrap your enemies and allied forces alike, one with the bonus of being actually in person on the battlefield, like SupCom, but in first person with your troops giving orders while facing your enemy on the ground face to face at the same time, i wish some modern twist on that genre was developed
Good memory GonTar TC, and thank you for the comment. There are in fact a few RTS/FPS hybrids in development I will showcase in my future videos
I want an RTS game where the resource management is done pre-game. You have a set amount of points and you buy your buildings, tech, vehicles, and so on "offline". Then when you create\ join a game, your entire pre-built base is slotted into a designated area on the map. So, all players begin with a fully developed civilization and army.
Hello Numero Set and welcome to my channel. Thank you for sharing such an interesting concept with us here! What setting and age would you chose for such a game?
@@perafilozof Something like the original C&C would be my preferred, but without the harvesters, of course. lol
@@NumeroSystem You would kick out the harvesters? Due to multiplayer gameplay?
If you remove the resource management and base-building, it's not really strategy anymore. Seems like you just want a tactical game, not a strategy game. Otherwise, your game would just be a longer kind of rock-paper-scissor: If you brought the wrong unit types/tech against your opponent, you're basically doomed from the very start.
@@Neptas I feel like the resource management feature makes the game more about speed than strategy.

Hey I'm one of the ATS devs; thanks for the interest!
The game is indeed directly inspired by cwwallis' classic Obliterate Everything series of flash games. There are a lot of differences from OE but the core idea is similar in spirit, so we're hoping people who enjoyed that game will have a good time with ATS as well.
The version of the game shown here is from a pretty old build btw; we've made a lot of improvements (visual and otherwise) since then - hopefully we can get a more up-to-date gameplay video released by the time ATS is covered again.
We're also going to be putting out some more up to date videos in the coming while. A lot of work has been done since that old demo-reel!

Cold Engines sound like Cuban Missile Crisis from G5 Software. In the game, you salvage enemy vehicles, tanks, and aircrafts for resources as ammo, fuel or parts. Or you used them as your own units.
Ah there you go and find one of the games I couldn't remember. Thank you very much andrew! What are your top 3 games to wait for from this list?
@@perafilozof Stormgate, Purple Wars, and the most I wanted to wait for... Tempest Rising. It does look like command & Conquer generals and Maelstrom: The Battle for Earth Begins from 2007. Hoping for them adding more fractions to make it a more difficult challenge.
@@andrewsteiner8785 Sweet choices! I really hope Tempest Rising won't be long
@@perafilozof Agreed.
Reminds me of a little kerfuffle going on in Eastern Europe with the smaller defending country repurposing enemy hardware.
Regiments and Broken Arrow look cool. Reminds me of World In Conflict crossed with the original Operation Flashpoint. Barkhan looks interesting with those creepy lurking environmental dangers like the giant worms on Tremors or Dune. Really looking forward to Tempest Rising and Global Conflagration, mainly because of the way they look heavily inspired by the best C&C games in particular. Sanctuary looks a bit like Supreme Commander, and that's not a bad thing. Ratten Reich looks like the most unique by far, looks bloody brutal too. Brilliant comprehensive video. Nice one.

@@perafilozof Thanks. And I've not been into games on PC's for that long. I got into them late, and was sort of back tracking through many of the classics, well, the ones that worked on Vista LOL 😅😛
My first pc had that, and while I liked it, it was bloody awful for compatibility, but oddly enough, not quite as bad as Windows 10... What about yourself?
I started on a SEGA console back in 1996, than PS1 in 1998 or something, and then PC in 2000. Played on both for a while but PC and strategy games were my thing forever since then.
I've played the tactic game that had fantasy creatures and humans, I remember it being dark unless you explored those areas. There was also other tribes but orcs or something, and they would surprise attack your town randomly. That was my first ever tactic game on the old pc and I can't remember the games name sadly. It was very pixel kind of game and it was one of my favorites as a kid.
Well was it turn based or real time? Because it was real time sounds like Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim if it was turn based could be Heroes.
Im a oldschool RTS player and there is many rts games but only 2 i have like , i only will keep the eye and have love for Sanctuary . the other is Beyond all reasons that i play ,the problem in rts games its that the minds that find the mecanic on RTS games are gone now the new ones have no idea the setup its need .
Hello Dius Lucrii and welcome to my channel. That is because so many real and professional RTS developers lost their jobs past 2010 and ended up in DOTA-a like games development or without a job. Like, the Frost Giant developer studio even has people who worked on the never published Generals 2.
@@perafilozof Was 2010 some RTS apocalypse?
@@Aurinkohirvi It was the time when development of RTS games fell considerably in favor of DOTA like games. Also a change of generations was happening with less and less new RTS players and more players of DOTA like games and FPS games. Also the era of broad band internet which pushed SP games down and MP games up. And RTS players are simply far more into SP than MP. That is my view of it anyway.
@@perafilozof Ah, I see. I suppose new game genres, also those with fancy 3D graphics, replaced some RTS games. But what this video shows, it's now (again?) popular.
@@Aurinkohirvi indeed, things are taking a turn. I think it is because a) quality of MP games has gone down a lot b) players are fed up with being milked for cash c) the RTS genre is finally seeing an increase in players as DOTA like games slow down just like FPS games d) like all trends repeat so do trends of popular game genres.

@@perafilozof OW is a little difficult for me to describe. It is a game created by Czech studio Altar interactive and is classical conflict between USA and USSR. But it is set in 2 mil. years BC thanks to spacial ore and device. At the begining it is not played as classical 90's.
Since you cannot train any human, only rescue ones that are teleported from future. Every one of them can be soldier, mechanic, technic or scientist. But each of them has certain backgroung. Even resources were different basic construction material was sent from future and need to be colected other can be mined. There is of course research that slowly push gameplay to more traditonal RTS but even there i a catch, since AI oprated vehicles are weaker than ones operated by level 10 mechanic. Units view can be obstructed by trees and even tall grass or enhanced by elevation. Story for each side is shown differently. And much more. It was certainly unique experience at that time. Hello and welcome ! It is a comprehensive look at the current situation of the RTS games in development, close and far from release and the kinds of RTS games, and what they are inspired by, which Indie and AAA developers are making right now.
It's sad that if you'd put c&c generals into this list randomly it would look the most promising, a 20 year old game.
