Part1 of making the blade for a 4" blade hunting knife out of a piece of 4mm 80crv2 steel. Next part will be on making the handle and finishing the knife. www.etsy.com/uk/shop/HowardBl...
Beautiful profile.. looks sleek and menacing... you should call it venator... hunter in Latin... one of those that could be micarta and stonewashed blade or brass bolster and mirror polish.. possibilities are endless!! Very nice work.... if I ordered it custom I’d get a hollow grind to get maximum slicey!!
01 is a lovely steel for tools. 80crv2 seems a bit tougher so a hunting knife that needs to cut against bone etc seems to suit it well. for all my carving knives etc 01 is my choice too.
Depends on what knife your making. It is very forgiving on heat treat but I judge it by colour. My forge is in the dark end of the workshop so I can always accurately judge colour. I do let it soak once up to temp for about 10 min as I find it improves the grain a bit.
Howard Blacksmiths thanks for your reply Howard.... hmm honestly my shop is very dim but not dark unless I work at night... I have small pro pain forge gets pretty hot but I can’t find any forge heat treat methods for 80crv2
Bub im new and im thinking about only working with 80crv2,d2,m2 van u talk me in or outta it. No its not local so ordering online is my only option. Dow hardvis the 80crv2 to hand file.. im teaching myself to do vine file spine work. Thoughts?
No there machined plastic wheels I bought off ebay. I did have skateboard wheels on a 2x72 but there bearings failed as they where too small. The bearings in these are much bigger and have lasted for 3 years already and no sign of any where so should be ok for a while longer.
@@matthoward2314 Thanks Howard! If I wanted to build a 2x72 and had basic machinist tools and a welder, would it be possible? or did you need to outsource the work. I would really appreciate some Info about this.

Ok what do u think about .250 in thick for edc and bushcraft id like to find a thick size and stay there .250 .200 .190 in. Whats the best for 80crv2
80crv is very tough so I wouldn't go over 4mm or. 160 for small knives
It is necessary to normalise your material before you start working on it? Or it doesn't matter?
I normalize it before the quench just to be safe but most modern steels come pretty much ready to be worked on.
yeah, normalize should be before shaping or after shaping the blade?
hi ive been working with 01 and i like it how is stainless to work with i send my knives out to heat treat,so he does that to...thank you w.smith

How do you heat treat 80crv2 with a forge I have same set up and haven’t done this because I don’t want to waste stock

Make some small blades or chisel edges on test metal and heat treat a few different ways till you find what works

It's not too hard but is very tough and is pretty easy to get a good heat treat.
are those... skate board wheels on that 2x72? classy
