Hello there, Extra Credits Crew! I think you should look into Emilie Autumn’s works; her works - especially her novel, The Asylum For Wayward Victorian Girls - would make awesome videos for the So You Haven’t Read series
Yummy 🤤
Can you do the book Jasper Jones
You should look at the screw tape letters by c.s Lewis great book and has a lot of that uncomfortable self reflection
Do GORMENGHAST
High Fidelity and Fever Pitch were so vital in my development, in that they taught me that loving music/sports/movies/books etc was not a replacement for a personality, and that developing and getting to know my own personality takes work. It's what you're like, not what you like.
wait... does the name of the café change to correlate with all the books they talk about? I would go check but I will just assume yes bc its more fun like that
Yes, it changes every episodes and usually is based on one of the books theme's or a joke about the book.
Yeah it’s really cool
It does
@@alexdillahunt6908 :D
I've known too many snobs be it in movies or games who have been gatekeeping passions away from folks because "they know best".
Definitely something they need a look in a mirror for, and this book could help that!
We totally agree!! We want more people to join hobby communities, not to scare people away.

Gatekeepers suck
This book and Scott Pilgrim are books I love but was introduced to them during a rough time in my life which made me kinda toxic.
When your a young adult male who’s barely not a teen anymore you can latch onto Scott and Rob pretty easily because they speak to you (or at least me,) music, games, bitchy ex girlfriends, and a general loser existence.
But it’s hard to get out of that mindset without looking at the characters and yourself and realizing “wow, we ARE assholes.”
For me I loved high fidelity because it was one of those movies I watched that made me go “wow I am an asshole”
The movie was the first ‘adult’ movie that I really ‘got’. I thought to myself “Yeah man, I totally get it, women are bitches and men must suffer to love.”
Now I watch it and go “Man, I was such an asshole, and Rob and his crew are NOT role models.”
See I identified with Scott pretty hard when I was in my early 20s, but thankfully I didn't have the realization about what an asshole Scott was until AFTER I grew up a bit and stopped being one myself (at least I like to think so 🤣). So I never had that moment of horror about it, instead I just have the now comfortably-distant knowledge of what a dumbass I was a decade ago 😂
i think scott pilgrim at least is able to help this problem by having the message be very explicit around books 4-6…..but that doesn’t help the movie.
"Unless, you can figure out what it is about you that makes you lousy at relationships."
This might be interesting.
"So you decide that it is time to track down some of your ex-"
Oh, it's an advanced course.
Let's be honest. Rob was a dirty cheater. His first love was always music, and he sullied that purity by trying to have a successful relationship.
YOU DID THE MUSIC DIRTY, ROB.
_You did the music dirty._
I first watched the 2000 movie starting John Cusack while in high school and it instantly became my favorite movie. I immediately had to read the book and feel in love with that as well. I wasn't expecting Extra Credits to do a video on this story but I'm was so happy to see the notification.
Same here! (Cathrine Zeta Jones as Ex number four was stunning!). I can see why they made certain changes from the book, especially changing the number 5 on the breakup list, but one of my fave rom coms ever in either form!
I too remember the movie. I feel like I've seen a number of other movies that are at least heavy omages to it as well.
Star Wars fans really gotta read this one
as a star wars fan, that also came into my head as I watched this. I just saw a meme of two folks fighting each other, with a third person watching eating popcorn, all labelled star wars fans, and i was like "sounds 'bout right".
Fans of anything usually ruin it lol
I remember having to read "slam", also by Hornby, in school. It was one of the only books that I had to read that I actually liked. The story didn't resonate with me at all but it was still so easy and wonderful to read, that I felt kind of chained to the story. I just now remembered about it, so thank you for that.
Nick Hornby did a wonderful collab album with Ben Folds about 10 years ago called Lonely Avenue. The songs are silly and sarcastic, but also introspective and poignant. The artists' styles mesh perfectly in that regard.

"Even if they do like Genesis."
EXCUSE ME?!
I know. Way to do Steve Hackett dirty, Mr. Hornby.
I know right? Genesis is like the prime music nerd band
@@Aquatarkus96 They're *_a_* prime music nerd band, but I wouldn't call them *_the_* prime music nerd band.
That honor goes to Rush.
@@qdHazen I only say that because of how much of a "nexus" Genesis was. "6 degrees of Kevin Bacon" really should've been called "6 degrees of Genesis" . You start trying to quantify every popular musician who was influenced by something they had a hand in popularizing or outright invented, the list gets very large very quickly.
No shade to Rush, they're super fucking awesome too, definitely a top 5 for me ;)
"Even if they do like Genesis"
Hey! Invisible Touch is a banger!
You have not lived until you've heard "Firth of Fifth."
Additional recommended listening: "Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers.../...In That Quiet Earth/Afterglow."
Invisible Touch, Mama, Silver Rainbow, That’s All, Land of Confusion, Jesus he knows me. So many Genesis Bangers
They have A TON of good music spanning 20 years. TBH they're up there with The Beatles and Stones in terms of how iconic and original they were. And they never really stopped being good, regardless what my more snobbish fellow prog fans might try to lead people to think!
This is definitely one of your TOP 5 Videos guys!!! Well done! This story means a lot to me
You should do "Trainspotting" by Irvine Welsh. Also, with Halloween fast approaching, you should do The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. People who only know the Netflix show would be very surprised by how different the book is.
Hearing the names "Dick" and "Barry" made me realise just how much i want to see an episode about 'In Cold Blood' by Truman Capote.
Much of this basic story is used in Big Bag Theory. Interesting to see the parallels.
Top 5 things I never thought I'd hear in an Extra credits video:
3. Arsenal FC
Huge fan of the club and you guys too.
Speaking of arsenal, congrats on currently being number 1 in the league! (from a liverpool fan)

Edit: I gotta ask though...where do you stand on Man United?
@@WindFireAllThatKindOfThing Just out of all teams, i definitely didn’t expect them to be 14th. I really didn’t expect the standings to be like this, either.
I love your content honestly it's very interesting and making a lot of facts from you so thank you for the amazing work
Thank you for watching!
Oh no problem I actually like have a couple questions like cuz that art style is absolutely amazing very simple very creative
Hello extra credits! I really enjoy your content! (Your Ethiopian history series was amazing)
Thank you! We love you too!
Loved the book, my teacher recommend it when I was in high school.
A GREAT book to read for high school! Kudos to your teacher for a fantastic recommendation!
@5:31 As a Genesis fan, thank you!
I definitely need to re-read it, because I read it when I was pretty young and most I took away from it was band reccomendations.
My personal theory as to why (partly) Rock n Roll kinda died is that snobbery and gatekeeping kinda pushed away younger generations and somewhat prevented the genre from organically getting with the times
See I would disagree and say that the whole "rock is dead" narrative IS a form of that snobbery. What do we mean when we say the genre is "dead?" It's certainly not that there isn't plenty of new music in the genre coming out every year, because there most certainly is. I think what a lot of people who really push that narrative are really saying is "I'm upset that rock isn't the single dominant form of popular music anymore." Which is ridiculous for two reasons:
1, because we have WAY more genres of popular music nowadays than we did fifty years ago, which inherently means more genres competing for people's attention, which means no single genre even *can* be the single dominant genre anymore. In the age of the internet, that's just not how pop culture works.
2, because the whole idea that there even *should* be a single dominant form of popular music is an extremely mid-20th century idea. The time period where that was true (even if I'm being REALLY generous and including big band music while ignoring that other genres besides rock, like folk music and disco, were extremely popular at points in the 60s and 70s respectively) didn't last more than about half a century at a stretch. In other words, it's a snobbish idea pushed by people who imagine the world they were born into is some kind of "norm" or "default," and that anything else must be an abnormality.
This good book and movie is better with friends in my life
Top 5 reasons why Extra Credit is a great channel with great content
When you listen to Genesis, you are always left with the feeling of being touched. invisibly.
I know what I like and I like what I know.
I have to check my Kindle library, I might have this one already. Because of these videos I have already read Persepolis and starting to read "The remains of the day".
You forgot all the smoking. The movie has it in like every other scene!😭
Your so helpful because my class just started reading this book for English class and it’s so helpful
I just love how Zoey is always in the videos doing something funny
He said the top 5 thing. That was from the movie, yay.
Could we please have an episode on So You Haven't Read - Animal Farm? :)
The type of person who says "you've probably never heard of the musicians I like" are definitely music snobs. Amused myself once with one of them by actually knowing one of his favorites (because they're also my brother's) and stumped him with some modern classical composers. lol. (I do like music that's not classical, too)
A-ha! I have, in fact! And I watched the movie, as well! I remember enjoying them both a lot.
Oh I've actually read this one. Love the film too
Loved the movie (mostly), and never knew it was a book.
Have you considered reading "Castle of Otranto" for Halloween this year?
Just out of curiosity what are the other 4 that should be on my top 5 reading list?
He goes for The Arsenal?? He’s on the Top 5 best writers humanity ever produced easy.
no idea it was also a book good to know!
Literally just bought this book
Very interesting book! It was fascinating seeing relationship reflections from a kinda-unlikeable male perspective. I enjoyed seeing Rob grow as a person as he introspected on his life and decisions.
Wow, crazy. Being nice pays off.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.....
A SIREN'S CALL, by Tim B. Wolfe.
Wonderful book
I was thinking about whether I gatekeep or not, and I just realised, I don't gatekeep, I am too lazy to do so, that kids is my entire personality, I don't want to harm you because of repercussions, but because of the fact that I am too lazy
For some reason the reader insert looks a lot like Dr. K here on youtube which is super fitting for the topic lol
I think as fellow history CZcamsrs, you should also add Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott to your list.
2:46 - "with whom you've lived with"
It's OK to use the preposition just once, guys
Just got it. High fidelity audio
I enjoy actual hi res music. It is something I would like to share with more people. Yet I find the people I have in my life are not as enthusiastic about it as i am. Hence, I do not recruit any new listeners. Also why the hi fi is in a separate part of the house, removed from prying eyes. If one does become interested, I am more than happy to plug in their phone so they can possibly discern music as not a background thing, but an introduction to critical listening
I give points to any book that tells the world how great Richard Thompson is. 😊

Bruh imagine if the red book just brought out another "-" xD
6:30 Why did you put a bar on top of that six? 😛
So basically, the book is encapsulated by the question "AITA?"
This sounds like an interesting book that needs to be turned into a movie if it's not already !!!
It is
There's a movie and a show actually
You mean as mentioned at ~ 0:35 ?
You mean Genesis where Phil Collins is the drummer, right? Right?!
Save for "From Genesis to Revelation," "Trespass," and "Calling All Stations," Phil's _always_ been the drummer in their studio work. As for live performances, a music snob should've known that Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson) and Chester Thompson (Frank Zappa, Weather Report, Santana) weren't brought aboard for the hell of it.
@@qdHazen Idk, if Rob Fleming doesn't at least have some respect for Genesis, he's not doing a very good job at being a music nerd lol. They are, like, central to the development of the sound of 80s music and the look of concerts in general from then on, as well as being a stupendous tremendous progressive group in the 70s. It's to the point that if that is a real thing the character in the book believes, it must be intentional. It's like being a cinema buff and not having at least some respect for Spielberg.
@@Aquatarkus96 I understand a music snob losing their cool if someone asked for stuff when they went in a more pop-friendly direction (i.e., any album after [and possibly including] "Duke"). I certainly prefer their 5- and 4-piece period as well, but it's not like they didn't make some prog bangers during their pop heyday, either. *cough*Home By The Sea*cough*
Hold on, are the thumbnail designs now getting changed? I don’t have a problem with it-in fact I think it looks nice!

Oh yeah, let's replace the delivery fee with preparation AND shipment fees, sure.
I feel like High Fidelity is to Gen Xers what Scott Pilgrim is to Millennials 🤔
Genesis slander! Rob is not only a mean music nerd, but not good at being a music nerd lol
If Rob hates them because they sold out, I can at least understand it.
It's still wrong, but I understand it.
You had me up until e-reader. Dead trees forever!
4 and is and what you want to do to make it to the 3 and then you can 9 the whole day of your time with your parents and your family friends
Watching this made me sad about the cancellation of the Hulu show all over again.
The movie treated Rob much more gently than the book, IMO. He was still an asshole but it highlighted more the journey of him becoming less of an asshole. The book left me liking Rob a lot less than watching the movie, though to be fair that may be in no small part due to John Cusack being just so damn likable. But if a book leads to even a small handful of young men recognizing some of their toxic traits and starting to un-learn them, then it definitely needs to be required reading.
Honestly, I’ve tried to read this book a couple of times. But, the main character is just such a self involved @$$ I just couldn’t get through it
Why do the new style of thumbnails on your videos kinda look like an infographics show video?
PANR has tuned in.
PANR doesn't feel right.
HA Finally one I have read

6:21 - Oh my god, THANK YOU. That stupid 6/9 image has bothered me for years. The number can't be both a six and a nine, it's objectively one or the other, someone's perspective is objectively wrong and they're too stubborn to even try to adjust their point of view! Argh. Man did they cancel extra mythology
Is the character in the café wearing airpods? That is so rude - to leave them in while you are talking to someone!
