  • My apologies for the loud noise/ lack of balance at the beginning of this video. But it gets better later on…
(I find it difficult to mix sound due to my hearing disabilities.)
How to operate a Singer 201/ 201k domestic sewing machine?
From the start = winding a bobbin, up to threading and up to the (very first time) sewing with this top of the line Singer sewing machine!
Don’t worry: The original 201 and the restyled 201 mark 2 share the same internal parts!
The only difference is the weight: The mark 1 is made of cast iron and the mark 2 has a aluminum housing.
Right… and the hooks on the front plate… Nearly forgot that one :-)
    Timestamps:
    0:00 201 mark 1, and the 201 mark 2
    1:40 Winding a bobbin
    2:10 Placing the bobbin
    2:30 Threading the machine
    Featured machines:
‘Left the factory yesterday?’ 1939 Singer 201k
‘They tried to break me but failed!’ - a 1955 Singer 201 mark 2 (black)
I have multiple vids online on Singer sewing machines. Feel free to watch more…
    Used royalty free soundtrack/music:
    Keys
    On_The_Hunt
    We_March_Together
    czcams.com/users/audiolibrary...
    Gear:
    Canon 5D-mark II; Canon 50mm f2.5; Tamron 90mm f2.8.
    (Might be I used a Sony PDW650 and/or a Sony FS7 for additional footage.)
Note: English is not my native language. My sincere apologies for any mispronunciations!

You are welcome Erik! Right now it is the 201k. I have wanted to sew for a while. Especially canvas and the like. Jeans. Some heavy stuff.
I already have a 201k that is slightly apart for filming. Next week I am meeting with a seller to buy a Singer 201K that is ready to sew.
The seller also has the original receipt! For what I plan on sewing, the Singer 201K is ideal; just like my 35 other favourite machines that are here. Lol! I am looking forward to filming/showing the new machine. A new toy to play with! I enjoy your awesome videos! Great work.

You have 35 more machines? I thought I had issues :-))))
Reading your message I think you made a great deal with your 'new' 201k.
At the moment I'm filming the 191, which COULD be sort of a follow-up of the 15k88. Both are really strong. So for jeans and canvas that might be an option too.
For now: Stick with the 201 and enjoy it!!!

Great video! Could you make one oiling and greasing the 201? I just got mine and am following the manual but would love to see someone else do it. Do offer repairs? I'm also in NL and am thinking about having an expert on hand if I can't figure this out myself. Thanks for this great content!

      Hello Tian.
Great to hear you liked the video.
Unfortunately I don't do repairs. But if you're struggeling: let me know the problem and I might be able to help you via email or DM @FB.
In juli I have more time to work on video's so I'll probably will make one on oiling a 201. If you can't wait: there are pics in the manuals, visually helping you through the process of oiling your Singer. You can download the manual online, or at the Singer 201 facebook-group.
      Hope that helps.

This is a great video of such a wonderful machine! I am wondering if you could help me though. I have a really clean 201k that does an incredible forward stitch, but, when put in reverse, it seems like the top tension is way too high (or bottom tension is too low) and so the bottom thread starts popping out on top. Online, I can see people have similar problems, but, as far as I can tell, there are no solutions posted there or in the adjustment manual. I can fix the problem somewhat by reducing the top tension, but my understanding is that it should be possible to reverse with the same tension setting? Thank you in advance!

@@erikneek Thank you Erik, I will have a look and see if anyone has a solution on there!

    • @antonglazkov109
      @antonglazkov109 Před rokem

Ok, so I think that I have worked it out. Basically, the problem seems to be that Mara 70 thread I was using is a very thin thread that seems to be thin enough that it doesn't engage properly with the bobbin tension spring.
Therefore, I took out the bobbin case and did a simple drop test with the thread through the tensioning spring, adjusting until it just slips through. For good measure, I also took apart and adjusted the top string tensioning assembly and put it back together (though it was quite clean in the end). Before the low tension on the bottom was easily overcome in the reverse because nothing is holding the top thread horizontally. With the greater bobbin tension this is no longer a problem. I'm also unsure if the elasticity of polyester thread is a compounding problem, and also if the needle plate is perhaps introducing extra tension on the forward stitch, but for now things seem to be much better.
I came to this solution by trying thicker cotton thread which had noticeably more bobbin tension than the polyester, which made me think to look at the bobbin.
Hope that this helps anyone with similar problems!

      Hi Elvira,
It depends on what case you have. If you have a suitcase model (as seen in my video on the 15k-88), there is a holder in the door where you can put it. Unfortunately I cannot add a picture.

Who says videos about sewing machines aren’t sexy? Thank you very much for showing and explaining this beauty in detail. Now, I will have to get my hands on a 201 😉
By the way: What’s the difference between the 201 and the 201k?

    • @erikneek
      @erikneek  Před 3 lety +1

Haha LOL! Thank you sooooo much!
The k indicates the (any) machine was build in the Kilbowie-plant near Clydebank Scotland (UK). There were other plants like in Monza Italy (M), but non as big as the Kilbowie plant.
If you have time: Watch the film Birth of a Sewing Machine (Gates Museum-youtube channel). It shows you how those machines were build in the beginning of the 20th century.
      Have a great weekend!

@@erikneek Thanks for your answer. I heard about these letters in Singer machines, indicating the factory they were built at. I once saw a video, which showed Singer machines with cyrillic decals. Those were taken from Germany after WW2, brought to the USSR, an decaled with Russian names, but the letter in the serial number still indicated the plant in Germany, where they actually were made. I wasn’t too much into Singers, so far. But this one seems to be a true gem. Have a sunny weekend as well.

Try your national second hand marktplace. In the USA they use Craigslist, AUS has Gumtree and we in NL have Marktplaats. Or try Facebook Marketplace!
The value depends on the condition of the machine and availability. I bought my 201 mark1 for 40 euros and the 201 mark2 for 70 euros. You might want to pay more for a top machine.
Good luck finding your next machine!

But does this reqire a peddle?

    • @erikneek
      @erikneek  Před rokem

There are 4... ways of using a vintage Singer.
      - A treadle base. The Singer sits on a table or cabinet. A belt runs towards the machine and you have to 'paddle',
      - A hand crank. You probably know these machines with a handle on the rear, which you have to turn,
      - A bolt on motor with a foot pedal. In the pedal is a mechanism that gives a signal to the motor,
      - A bolt on motor with a knee lever. The knee lift is attached to the base of the sewing machine. In the compartment is the mechanism that gives a signal to the motor.
I this video I used an early Singer 201, with a knee lever. And I used a later alluminium 201 with a foot pedal.
I hope this answers your question.
      Have a great weekend, Erik
