    VERY IMPRESSED !! I'm intrigued to see what you'll create with this fantastic material. Enjoyed the history contents too. The way you split the slate was not only satisfying but also impressive.
    The way you worked to create that pear was mind blowing. Anyway, enough of the compliments. Have you got any ideas on what your next project will be?

    I loved learning about slate. I wish I could have a slate wall, but I’ll dream about it instead. I am glad that the new owner wants to have a living heritage site. We lose to many places like this.

    Amazing! As a kid, my Dad and I went into the hills near my childhood home with his 1962 Chevy car and brought back load after load of slate. We used it to make dry stack retaining walls.

  • @michaelhogan9053
    @michaelhogan9053 Před 4 lety +1

    Hi James. I'm here in Pennsylvania, US. Our area had tons of slate quarries. My topic is roof slate that you work with. When they were placed directly on roof sheathing without air space underneath they go about 75 yrs and they start to decay or rot underneath and break apart easy. When they are fixed to nailing strips spaced apart they last 100+ yrs and just become brittle and break easy. Was wondering if you 'treated' your sculptures with any waterproofing?

    • @jamesparkersculpture
      @jamesparkersculpture  Před 4 lety

      Hi Michael, I don't often treat the slate. I have on a couple of occasions but that's been for aesthetics with indoor sculptures.

    Breathtaking views that go on forever. I do have a question....when contractors build a brick house here (Florida USA) they like the brick on site for a few days to acclimate to temperature etc. Do you have to do that with slate and other materials you use?

    • @jamesparkersculpture
      @jamesparkersculpture  Před 4 lety

      Hi Joy, that's interesting. No I don't. To be honest, I've never heard of this with regard to stone.

    Another very interesting video. However I did not get the impression from you that " this slate is fantastic " . How will you evaluate whether this slate is one you would consider using in the future ?. And no I am not going to mention " the coo man " LOL. Cheers from East Kilbride.

    • @jamesparkersculpture
      @jamesparkersculpture  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you. The slates just not as fine grained as something like Welsh slate which splits very easily and predictably and therefore can't be used to make a really precise form. However there are plenty of things the slate can be used for. It's just that I'll likely have a different approach to the design.

      I've get the quarries to put it on pallets and deliver by lorry usually. Occasionally I fill my trailer by hand, usually onto pallets so that I can easily offload at the workshop.

    James - You should be wearing safety glasses. We You Tube viewers may be looking here to learn how to do what you do and you putting on safety glasses each and every time before you pick up your hammer, may save not only your eyes, but numerous other eyes around the world. We badgered your brother enough that he finally began wearing eye protection during all trimming. Please don't require the same effort to protect your eyes - I know I'd like to see more of them - creating more sculptures, for many years to come.
