    Interestingly, Princess Ashraf's son Mustapha Chafik _was_ shot in the back of the head in Paris in the Rue de La Villa Dupont by a Fedayeen gunman. According to the article I read (New York Times, Dec 8th 1979, Frank Prial author,) he had failed to request protection after the Revolutionary Council called for the extermination of the royal family. The article didn't mention Seagal, presumably because the involvement of a respected ninth-degree aikido master in such an affair would have been highly classified.

    I'm not sure if anyone has seen it, but at UFC 274 just recently, Seagal's purely innovative and TOTALLY invented by him move, the Seagal front kick of death, was used by Michael Chandler to knock out Tony Ferguson... There was no such thing as a front kick until he invented it when he was teaching Pai Mei from Kill Bill the 5 point palm exploding heart technique...And people say he's a "fake"... Did you know he gave up being a Navy SEAL just to be a cook on a ship? It was in his biopic, "Under Siege"

    The legend goes that an agent made a bet that he could make *any* one a star and he lit on Segal.

    • @calvinlee8103
      @calvinlee8103 Před 2 lety +7

      Seagal was a personal trainer at a gym where one of the most successful agents *ever* worked out. He thought Seagal had less charisma than anyone he'd ever met, so when the bet you mentioned occurred, he chose Seagal to prove that he could make even the most unlikable, embarrassing person into a star.
      That agent was INSANELY powerful in Hollywood at the time. I'm fairly certain that's the only reason that this article existed, talking about how Seagal was such a badass action star, despite his first ever movie not even coming out yet. Most first-time actors don't have people fawning over them like this before they've made a single movie. It's so hilarious.
      (I'm sure you know this stuff already, but it's just such a bonkers story and I love talking about it with people.)

    48:34 This is the 2nd time in recent memory that I’ve heard chapo reference guys “reading Infinite Jest” in public, but I don’t quite get the trope… based on context clues I’m assuming it’s the ‘move’ of a ‘Guy’ of some sort (reactionary guy move? MRA guy move?). I’m not on any social media though, and anytime something on the show goes over my head it’s typically safe to assume it’s a Twitter Thing.
    I remember about 12-15 years ago (in real life) there was a brief phase of people ostentatiously reading _IJ_ in public places. it was mainly hip 20-somethings signaling their intellect (/pretentiousness). But like, the type people who had recently studied “____ and Marxism” in college (ie. the type of people that went on to form Chapo Trap House). So I’m hitting up against some cognitive dissonance trying to suss this trope out.
    (also full disclosure, I never read the book and am only vaguely familiar with its contents in broad strokes… but maybe it’s an allusion to the actual material?)
