  • In this video we are going to Explore an Old Hotel before Demolition. The Scranton Red Carpet Inn has become an Eyesore and I was able to obtain permission to have this whole property to myself for a few hours. In this part 1 video we will cover the exterior of the property and head inside to the main building to see what is left. As you'll see, this place has seen better days and won't be missed as a hotel.

In the early 80's, my father had a small engine and lawnmower repair business in Mt Cobb called Ray's Repair Service. He was a Briggs and Stratton dealer. Briggs would have a yearly seminar for area dealers showcasing new engines, parts and tools. I was 15 at the time and this was the first time he took me with him. We were in the ballroom on January 28, 1986, the day of the Shuttle Challenger disaster. About 2 in the afternoon, the seminar was over and we were heading home. I remember coming out of the elevator and walking towards the front desk and the woman working saying "The shuttle blew up, here watch this" so a bunch of us stood there watching a small black and white TV and watched the footage. We had no idea it happened until over 2 hours after the rest of the world.

I had my wedding reception in their banquet facilities back in 1991. It was Best Western University Inn at that time, I believe. It was very nice. They had a consultant there that worked with us on setting up the event. The restaurant at that time was Numbers, and it was a pretty good dining experience in those days. I remember going there for dinners with friends into the early 2000s. It sure went downhill over the past couple of decades. Glad to see that something new is coming there, and I hope it all works out well for the city.

Its always a shame to know that a hotel establishment is going to be knocked down but was already in disrepair. To take extra money for fridges is a little too steep to me. Jay,
That restaurant sign tells it all.
Either the people who stayed there in the last days were low life or the owners had
    a really bad attitude.
The reviews of the restaurant would indicate a declining, poorly managed business.
So now it will soon be demolished and who knows what the area will become.

Very nice before-and-after effect at 28:34. I was wondering where exactly the lobby/check-in area was. The entryway layout seems strange to me, having a wall right in your face after you go through the doors. Looking forward to Part 2!

Damn, bad condition now but was probably cool in the 60’s. I would’ve loved to have bought some of those circular metal air diffusers in the lobby ceilings…

Businessmen from India have a terrible record when it comes to maintaining motels they purchase. Most end up being used by prostitutes or drug addicts. Sorry, it's simply a fact.

Years ago I stayed at a hotel, think it was a Holiday Inn, that had the same sign by their breakfast area. I wanted to take some cereal and milk and a couple of donuts up to the room for myself, my ex and 2 boys who were really little then to tide us over until we could go for a real breakfast. I asked the clerk about it and she said I could do that. The reason they had that sign was to stop people from taking like a half a box of breakfast bars or a whole box of donuts. They even had people come in off the street and "steal" stuff. I asked if that stopped it. She laughed and said it cut it down a lot but didn't stop it totally. Looking forward to part 2.

Looks like one of the outdated rent by the week motels that people lived in. Being a Holiday Inn, I bet it was snazzy when it first opened.

Wow! What a shame that it was not took care of properly. My mom cleaned hotels and motels for 24 yrs. From the time I was 2wks old until I was 6, I was at moms job with her everyday. The hotel owner set a crib up in the office so mom could come and tend to me whenever she wanted. I remember sitting in a little kids rocker and watching black n white TV with Faye and Harry the owners.. They would give me a cold bottle of Coke with peanuts...😁When I was old enough to walk I would go with mom and help all I could.. I knew how to make a bed with hospital corners when I was 3 😊. She would open the doors on the checkouts and I would strip the beds and throw all the covers over the rails as well as all the garbage. Momma would go by with her cart pick it all up and take everything to laundry. There was an old man who lived at the end of the hotel in like an efficiency apartment in the winter. He would come down from New York to sunny Florida to stay warm. He had the coolest organ ever!!!! The thing had three tiers. He taught me how to play it. 🙂 He wasn't kin to me but I would call him grandpa...lol. By the way, a hotel is 2 story and a motel is 1 story. Enjoyed the video. Upcoming basement looks creepy...😱

It used to be a Best Western I think, many decades ago. It was a hole even back then in the 80s-90s. Oh yes, I see all that is covered on the linked history page above. I forgot that it was also the University Inn for a while also.

I love looking at old buildings.
I love architecture and history of the buildings but the real reason is I always see things that make me want to take wax rubbings for texture in my abstract art.

At 5:07, you mentioned google map images(in the 80's). I have been looking for those years on a map with no success. Google Earth starts at 1992 and Penn Pilot stops at 1970. How do you find the images from the 80's?
