  • Today's Buyers Guide is all about dropshotting for bass! Dropshot fishing is a core technique that every serious angler needs to master. Today we're exploring the different worms, rods, and terminal tackle that shine with this technique. We're also throwing in some key tackle tips that will make a huge difference when you're fishing!
    In the beginning dropshot fishing seems really simple. You suspend a worm and shake it to draw fish in. As time goes on you'll learn that subtle differences in the baits and hooks make a huge difference in your catch rates as conditions change. Today the guys are breaking down their favorite baits for different situations and explaining how each one should be rigged.
    Below you'll find links to the baits, terminal tackle, and rods we showed throughout the video. We've listed them in the order they appeared and included favorite sizes and colors for each. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each.

    SO MANY BENEFITS to the LIGHT WIRE HOOKS for drop shots! Matt hit on the reduced weight at the bait, perhaps the most overlooked benefit. The thin wire hooks also INCREASE HOOKUPS, especially when the bass slurps the bait on slightly slack line. Finally, and maybe most importantly, thin wire hooks allow you to use THE LIGHTEST POUND TEST LINE and the lightest action rods. I fish STUPIDLY CLEAR WATER where 6 lb fluorocarbon is the BIGGEST LINE I use and where I often need 4 LB TEST FLUORO. That would NOT be feasible with regular diameter hooks.

    Thank you, Matt and Tim for these amazing Guides. I don't use a dropshot very often down here, but I can imagine it's a great technique further north. OT note: Have had the new SLX MGL 70 out a few times since it arrived; it is definitely better at throwing light lures than any baitcaster I have owned. Throws a weightless stick bait very well, and was super easy to dial in. Have not tackled anything sizable with it yet; I have it on a 13 Omen Black 7-4 MH moderate-fast. Versatility is key with bank fishing, and this combo looks like it may give me a pretty wide range of options. Thanks again and looking forward to the next video!

    I ended up getting the Miravel based on your earlier first review of this reel and paired it with a 7ft St Croix ML premier rod which is a slight upgrade from the Mojo Bass rod. I have been killing the bass lately using a Neko rigged 5” senko in baby bass color. I used Tim’s advice to paint the last inch of the tail with a black sharpie and it has made a huge difference. I also Neko rigged a D Shad on the same setup. Both Neko rigged setups are best using a 1/32 oz nail weight. Will go back to drop shooting again soon 😉

I caught everything on it this season from big largemouth & smallmouth, big crappie & Gills, to a beautiful 20" inland lake Rainbow Trout! Out of all the baits I have tried the Glitch has the best minnow profile & the best action. It's buoyant so it won't sink or dip downwards when you let it sit like the PB Flat Worms, it sits perfectly horizontal on the pause & with just a slight wiggle of the rod that tail dances like it's got rent to pay! Would love to hear you guys opinion on it!

      Hard to argue the rods dna. I think Tim owns a world line class record on that stick. It may not be for you, which is fine, as we all have different taste/preference, but just because you didn't like it doesn't mean it's not a great stick.

    • @Jon-nz3dm
      @Jon-nz3dm Před rokem +1

      massive diminishing returns on "sensitivity" of rods. the world in general is annoying since every manufacturer says their new rods are "30% MORE SENSITIVE!!!" with no scientific testing done to prove this. Once you have a modern $300 rod and braid mainline you are already feeling everything you need. The jump to $500+ _should_ be extremely hard to justify.

    • @nawinchester
      @nawinchester Před rokem +1

      @@Jon-nz3dm I think as you move up in higher priced rods, it's not sensitivity that you gain when you spend more money, rather it's the performance of the power and action combined to provide a tool that helps you land more fish. I totally agree with you that at some level all rods have enough sensitivity coupled with braid to feel everything you need to feel with respect to a bite. It's how that rod performs once a fish is hooked that will separate it from others. That and I also think that how a rod feels in your hands, in terms of lightness and balance, is also part of moving up the food chain when you spend more money on a rod. But your main point is a valid one which is sensitivity isn't something that should drive people to spend more money on a fishing tool because up above that $300 price range paired with braid, I really do think you can feel all you need to feel when it comes to a bite and what bottom composition feels like.

    • @Jon-nz3dm
      @Jon-nz3dm Před rokem

      @@nawinchester You're spot on. Expride's are so good at their price point, action and especially balance wise, that I personally don't feel the need to go higher. Some brands still can't manage to balance their rods even over $400 lol. Even with Torzite guides St. Croix didn't manage to balance the Legend Elite rods. They're notoriously horrible with that, though. It's like it's not even considered when they build the rods.

    Hey Matt and Tim, this is a question more related to BFS. I stumbled upon the halo ks II 6'10 medium and was surprised to see the lure weight rating as low as 1/16th. was wondering if you guys have had any experience using this rod for bfs and if so, how would you see it pairing with the kast king zephyr? Thank you for this great series of buyers guides!

    Aside; Blatantly obvious you like the Skeeter, So, is it the top of the line, sponsored or just your choice and why?

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  Před rokem +2

      Yes, Tim is loving the boat. The Skeeter itself has a really good ride, great attention to detail, and a logical layout. Just as important, we're Yamaha fanatics (note we hung new motors on our Champs) and if you want a Yamaha on a new boat, Skeeter is your best bet 👍🏼

    Are baitcasting reels no good for drop shot at all?

    Budget? Bang for the buck? $200? ROFLMAO! Ever heard of Shakespeare, ugly stick? That is bang for your buck. And it works. Been using since i was a freaking teen. I catch fish all day long drop shot, live bait, trollling.....

    You said you like the 7’2 ML Expride for drop shotting. I’ve read that the new Expride are stouter than they are rated. So a ML may be considered a M and a Light might be considered a ML. What’s your opinion? Do you feel the ML is overpowered at all?

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  Před rokem +1

      I don't feel they're overpowered whatsoever.

    So is the miravel worth the extra $30 over a Diawa fuego lt their the same weight but the fuego has more bearings

    • @Jon-nz3dm
      @Jon-nz3dm Před rokem +1

      Amount of bearings is generally irrelevant, only a marketing number. This is why you'll see certain brands that make fairly generic factory reels(Abu, Lews, other cheap reels) talk about "11 BEARINGS!" when reels like the Shimano Tranx 200 only has 3(made for saltwater, bushings in place of bearings in certain areas reduces corrosion risk) but is still far smoother and a better reel. Curado only has like 5 I believe and there aren't better reels for the money.
      As far as the Fuego goes, it's a good reel for the money but the new Miravel will surely be better since it's much newer tech from Shimano. I'd put money on it being smoother and more durable.

    How do you get the rod and reels on sale. TW doesn't show that the discount is good on them in cart?

      @TacticalBassin during the sale is when I added to cart multiple times. Is there a trick to it for next time. All the other stuff in cart showed the discount just not rods or reels. I have been watching you 2 for about 4 or 5 months and you have cost me thousands. Lol. Do you guys guide on chik? I have tried to reach out via FB etc to see. I am about 5 hours away and that's my favorite lake to fish along with Dale Hallow and Watts Bar. I also need a rod recommendation for a reel I won in a raffle. Thanks

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  Před rokem

      Oh, got it. All you had to do was complete the sale. Items protected by MAP pricing requirements will never show a discount but will still be discounted upon completion of sale.
      We're not currently guiding Chick. We love this place but are just on the road too much to do it... for now.

      @TacticalBassin bummer for me. Lol. I need help, and I know Matt is a junkie for tackle as I am. Can u suggest a 200 to 400 solar rod for a new stella 3000. I just won it and have never had such a nice reel. I would use for drop shot, tubes, and other finesse stuff I have not tried before. Thanks for advice.

      Oh man, you scored!! Thats amazing!! While the pairing isn't equal (dollar to dollar) the Expride is an incredible bang for the buck. If it were me I'd get the Expride B 7'2" Med Light. That is a very adaptable rod that will let you explore a bunch of finesse techniques. Here's a direct link to the rod: bit.ly/3AFcaFF
