- *ALTERNATE LYRICS (6:04):
For though try, as I may, I can never repay all that I owe
To the land of mañana and cheap marijuana.
(It's so easy to grow.)
In Old Mexico. Olé!
The first part of the video (my signature slide) is overlaid by the final bars of "Noble patria, tu hermosa bandera", which I played on my keyboard.
The main part of the song is one of Tom Lehrer's live performed songs, "In Old Mexico". It is part of Tom's first published live performance album, "An Evening Wasted With Tom Lehrer". But I obtained the actual music from the box set, "The Remains of Tom Lehrer", which was released in 2000. Enjoy.
And the last part is the main theme of "The Phantom of the Opera", by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Simply the 'cherry on top', and my personal song.
Here's the description Tom Lehrer himself made about the song: "'In Old Mexico' is a paean to our good neighbor."
Sorry I gave so much information about the music earlier. I don't want to get screwed by stupid WMG again. They are a bunch of arse-holes. And to make sure I am not screwed, have them read the following credits:

"Majored in animal husbandry, until they caught him at it one day."
The gargling bit.
Diseases of the rich.
Beautiful. That preamble was absolutely beautiful.
“Diseases of the rich” reminds me of those overpaid, overfed gurus who cater to the very upper classes.
I am now 79 and was first introduced to Tom Lehrer as a boy in England around 1958. His records were smuggled into England and an older friend of my sister's collected them. His humour and brilliant musical ability together with his display of language always fascinated me. I followed his talents all those unsure times of the 1960's. I am so pleased to have found him here on CZcams and to show him off to my grandchildren.
1:01 The animal husbandry joke is priceless!
The intro’s are always pithy and whacky. This one has to be a favourite. “ Diseases of the rich” is classic.
"affluenza" is such a bullshit concept. If some spoiled rich brat is *so* out-of-touch w/ reality that they aren't aware of the consequences of their actions, then logic & common-sense dictate need a *harsher* sentence to disabuse them of any such arrogance, not a lighter one.
He is a brilliant pianist; he can imitate so many musical styles to fit with his (sick) songs. Ive been laughing with Tom Lehrer for a good 60 years and I admire his lyrics as well as his piano playing. In his own way, a genius.
Absolutely great pianist.
I've never heard that gall bladder intro before, that was great.
Tom Lehrer ... true genius.
The gallbladder skit is one of my favourites
I like th original lyrics. I am Mexican American BTW, and we listened to that song on a regular basis in our home. My parents were never offended by it because....this may shock you...but they had a frigging sense of humor.
Met him a little, over 50 years ago. Even then, he wasn't like the other children.....
Joseph Horton - I see what you did there xD
70 years ago (in school), he wasn't like the other children, either!
I could totally imagine him sitting in class, drifting away from whatever the teacher was saying at the time, as he formulated evil songs in his head, for which he was summoned to the principal's office so he could "explain himself." LOL.
We had this ad a record in Ireland in the mid 60s & I learned to sing it (in my own key, as Tom would Say) when I was about Seven. I really enjoyed these songs & it still brings back happy childhood memories of Ireland & the bonkers 60s humor we shared as a family. 😂
Saludos...desde Guadalajara..
I gotta admit, the alternative lyrics part was very clever
Love him. Brilliant.
1:20 that is the sound of an audience hissing. Yes thats a thing crowds do.
It sounds just like the internet.

Do your service to the MCRN!
America's top punster! And social critic.
Hilarious! So clever and ahead of its time.
Génial. Ironico. saludos desde Guadalajara
Saludos desda Alabama.
Being from Spain, it's interesting how he mixes Mexican and Spanish stereotypes. Also, mixing Mexican styles with the Spanish pasodoble (doublestep) when talking about the bullfight (which is mostly associated with Spain) is just funny.
Seriously, just compare with the most famous pasodoble (España cañí - Romani Spain) czcams.com/video/fLAWrJwovuA/video.html
Great. Hilarious & I enjoyed it. Thank you for uploading.
+Asoka Rathinam - You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
I remember, fondly, "That Was The Week That Was". Sigh. Nothing like that for quite a while.
Thank you, dear Alexander.
Enjoy your lovely Monday.
I miss the visual aspect of this wonderful performance.
I love this song. I also love Mexico and mariachi music. All of my Mexican friends agreed with me that bullfighting is barbaric.
What a pianist!
What a unique educator Tom Lehrer was, in both math and comedy which he had taught in university on both coasts: in Harvard and in UC Santa Cruz!
I gladly had every Lehrer song memorized by the time I was ten, since my dad had all the recordings.
This made for interesting conversation between me and my high school teachers: like the day a substitute came into our chemistry class, wrote his name on the board, Mr. Braun, and I raised my hand and jokingly asked him if he's related to Werner Von Braun. (He didn't expect that question--or the rattling off of the elements, in song form--from a teenager.)
And many other opportunities of quoting Lehrer came in handy for me in other classes.
This is legal lethal.
Absolute genius
That was new for me, thank you!!
Happy cinco de mayo, guys
I read that a store owner who wanted to capitalize on Cinco de Mayo a day early, put up a sign on May 4 reading "Cinco de Cuatro." My source commented, "What a maroon."
Is that like Hellmann's going straight to the bottom?
1,250 pounds, and more!
Both ears and the tail to the Pontiac!
Those are some heavy ears and tails :P
Well boys we found it old mexico
They just don't make 'so like that any more! Can you think of any contemporary offerings that would still admire over 40 years later and still be funny!
He was also a really good singer!
In delivery yes. That dry, straight tone is perfect for his own songs, but I doubt that anyone would have hired him to sing other material. Perhaps G and S as the Major General or Ko-Ko, or the Judge in Trial By Jury. The tradition there is for a "non singer".
And the pasodoble part is excellent.
Anyone here because of Eric Weinstein?
From his Debut Reprise album.
al menos pronuncia bien méxico XD
There are matadors in México?
I was surprised as well.
@@DrWhom @Gixellia yeah, actually, they have the second most bullfighting rings after spain
Por supuesto.
sounds like laugh track
that's because most laugh tracks were recorded with microphones about this old, in fact, they were recorded about this long ago, and many of the people laughing at the jokes on friends, big bang theory, how i met your mother etc... are long since dead.
Recorded live
@@josh4601 Those shows were "sweetened" by laugh tracks but there were in fact live audiences at those tapings. If you want more authentic laughter for shows watch "All In The Family" where the actors presented the material as a straight play and they just went out and performed for 25 minutes. Frasier and Cheers still have that feel, though there was more editing done.
Parece o Brasil.
Hes a Satarist.
Gallbladder in the Black market is $4000 in vampire stern family tradition I married to Italian men for 25 years. He never speaks Italy so his family so I never heard the word te amo yet in Italy
@Gixellia, ... sure there are Matadors in Mexico ... the problem is ... the Bulls are in Chicago!
We need that wall!
There’s a horse in the hospital
I'm sure Mexico will pay up any day now
... one day, ... after the Pandemic, ... when rebuilding ... as cheap and ambitous workers. "Make America great again!!!"
