Tom Lehrer: Clementine (concert live) (1959)

  • The first part of the video (my signature slide) is overlaid by the final bars of "Jamaica, Land We Love", which I played on my keyboard.
The main part of the song is one of Tom Lehrer's live performed songs, "Clementine". It is part of Tom's first published live performance album, "An Evening Wasted With Tom Lehrer". But I obtained the actual music from the box set, "The Remains of Tom Lehrer", which was released in 2000. Enjoy.
And the last part is the main theme of "The Phantom of the Opera", by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Simply the 'cherry on top', and my personal song.
Here's the description Tom Lehrer himself made about the song: "What might have happened if professional song writers (in this case Cole Porter, Mozart, any real cool cat, and Gilbert and Sullivan) had written folk songs is illustrated in 'Clementine'."
Sorry I gave so much information about the music earlier. I don't want to get screwed by stupid WMG again. They are a bunch of arse-holes. And to make sure I am not screwed, have them read the following credits:
Recorded at SANDERS THEATRE, HARVARD UNIVERSITY, Cambridge, MA (3/20/59 & 3/21/59)
    Produced by TOM LEHRER
    Engineered by STEPHEN FASSET
From the album "An Evening Wasted With Tom Lehrer," Lehrer #TL-202-S (1959); Reissued as Reprise #R-6199 (1966)
"The Remains of Tom Lehrer" Compilation ℗ 2000 Warner Bros. Records Inc. & Rhino Entertainment Company.

The "eternitye" joke still cracks me up. Fine like champagne bubbles served on a World's Best Dad coffee mug.

You just have to listen to Gilbert and Sullivan to get the joke (but of course, you should listen to them anyway ;^)

@@DeadBore I'm pretty sure it means basically the verse of the song that goes there! The original verse (and the following chorus) go:
Light she was, and like a fairy
and her shoes were number nine -
      herring boxes without topses
      sandals were for Clementine.
Oh my darling, oh my darling, oh my darling Clementine,
thou art lost and gone forever, dreadful sorry, Clementine.
(I think Lehrer's translation of the chorus is more like "Such a shame, Clementine, darling Clementine" or something, not sure though - I only speak Spanish, not Italian.)

You're right. It WAS sensational. Or, as Lehrer once said (while attempting a Russian accent for his "Lobachevsky" song), "SEN-SHUSH-ANOL"

Interesting to find out, after hearing this version for all these years, it appears to be the studio recording with audience sounds dubbed in. Compare this to the studio version, available on CZcams.

Tim Allen - Absolutely not correct! There is absolutely no similarity between this and the studio recording, except the words. First, the acoustics are obviously different. Second, he makes mistakes in each version, but different ones. And third, there exist a lot of nuances in Lehrer's speech and singing that make it obvious that the two versions were different, separate recordings. You can compare the credits in the descriptions between this video and the studio version, which is also available on my channel, here: czcams.com/video/f0Wa_tnvyag/video.html .

The mistakes I'm referring to are in the introductory section of the Gilbert & Sullivan bits. In the studio version, he hits a stray B key at around the third beat, whereas in the concert version, he hits a stray A key at around the sixth beat ... with the sustain pedal down, no less.

@@AlexSh789 Excellent analysis, Alexander. For Tom Lehrer purists, the best collection available today is the Rhino CD Box Set, "The Remains of Tom Lehrer," which includes multiple presentations of the same songs, including Clementine, both live and studio. I see that this Set has become quite expensive on Amazon. I remember buying it new years ago for less than half the cost of a used set today.

@@AlexSh789 Also, in the "Cool School" section he plays the "Fell into the foamy brine" line twice - once without and then with the vocal.

This was recorded at a rather famous nightclub, "the hungry i" in San Francisco. I used to have the album "An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer." It included many of his well-known songs, clearly recorded in front of a live audience. He did at least one other live recording, in Copenhagen, which is also available on CZcams. Just because a guy sings the same songs in several recordings doesn't mean that they are all "dubbed" versions of a single studio recording.

The 'professional songwriter' versions sound _worse_ than the original. But maybe that was the point too. I wonder what Aaron Copeland would have done with that song.
