    That's the first time I've ever heard someone say that they thought Thai people were all covered up. They have a massive red light district. Only muslim countries cover up and the few that I've been to, you could wear whatever you wanted anyway so long as you didn't mind some uncomfortable looks and unwanted attention.

  • @EcoholicBeauty
    @EcoholicBeauty Před 11 lety

    When we were travelling through Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia I found that for the most part I could just wear whatever I wanted. I didn't cope with the heat well, so that typically meant tank tops, shorts, and short dresses. The only time I found it necessary to cover up was when we visited certain attractions, especially temples and other religious sites (here the dress code can be very strict, and sometimes just covering your shoulders with a scarf isn't good enough)

  • @catcartier27
    @catcartier27 Před 11 lety

    Funny story about the sales people on their phones. I worked cosmetics retail here in the states for many years and we had to be in front of the counters and engaging customers, ALWAYS standing on marble floors. I went to Singapore and was shocked to see the salespeople in the cosmetics department sitting in CHAIRS ignoring customers. Different cultures are always interesting to discover and reflect upon! Have fun!

  • @piyaratkenny6038
    @piyaratkenny6038 Před 9 lety +3

    Well,the weather is so warm all year round and because of the time&trend change, we,no matter male or female,are more comfortable to wear short...does not matter where you are,at the center of tourism area or elsewhere.
    But when we have to go to a temple, we have to definitely wear kind of traditionally conservative clothes. Some job types and some formal events also can have you to see Thai people with more polite/conservative clothes/costumes. Thanks for visiting and observing our country though.

    Yes, we are thinking of visiting Thailand again this year. It is rather surprising that you guys were misinformed about Thailand. Cheers!

    If you want local clothes, go to the Kaad Luang (the main market) where northern clothes are sold. You can buy the fisherman's pants (good for yoga and lounge around), sarongs, and other stuff there. It's actually a good place to experience the 'Lanna' culture. Local malls are more for young people and also tourists. All and all, enjoy Chiang Mai! It's a nice friendly town!

    SE Asia was definitely more "North American" than I had expected when I went too - and that was 5 years ago! I'm sure it's even more so now! I bough a ton of great skinny jeans and hoodies at a massive mall in Bangkok right before flying back to Canada actually - sooo cheap and actually good quality. I agreed with you Jacqueline. I am Malay from Malaysia. Although we are Muslim country, we are multi cultural and fashions are quite liberally in Malaysia. But it also depends on where you are in Malaysia. If you go to KL you will see the fashion is quite westernize. If you go to Trengganu they abit more conservative.

    The first mall is called Kad Suan Kaew, which is attached to a hotel. My favorite mall it is, for it has the most grand cinema, very casual, and easy to access. There is another "mall" which is a collection of small shops in an open area on the same street Huay Kaew road, which opens to the outdoor.

    From my trips to Thailand I've noticed two differing dress examples. First is the majority who live as we do; work, shop, dine indoors for the majority of the day who tend to dress similarly to us. The second is those who work and eat outdoors, like the beach hawkers, golf caddies; these are those who, as a rule tend to cover all their skin in heavy clothing and large hats as a way to keep the skin fair, as tanned skin, from what has been explained to me, implies that they work in the fields?

  • @century153

    hello there! people in thailand generally do not wear spaghetti straps or tank tops. I've been to Chaing Mai and my mother never lets me wear those things. She does let me wear the short skirts I would wear at home but no booty shorts anything like that. Flip flops are also a staple in Thai culture. Definitely if you go to a temple things will be more conservative. If you look around, only tourists are really wearing revealing things.

    Also, ALWAYS carry tissues on you because if you go off the main path, or to some outdoor markets, even restaurants, a lot of places don't have toilet paper. especially the ones where you have to squat. Some places charge you for toilet paper. If you can you should visit the floating river market and my place to stay overnight was a floating hotel on a river in the middle of the jungle. Only way to get there was by boat. No electricity, and was able to pet and feed elephants with the local tribe
