How I use minimalism to save more money and live better. In February 2011, I started on CZcams as a beauty channel, I began collecting all kinds of beauty products, makeup, skincare, clothes and home decor for creating content. Until one day in 2012, when the desire to become more "minimalist" entered my mind and I chose to reconnect with my roots, of simple living. I was always a minimalist at heart, before social media.

It’s been fun to watch your journey from maximalist to minimalist! I am an OG viewer and have clear memories of your lifestyle on Maui. It was fun to watch all of your DIY projects and make-up testing back then, but it’s also fun to watch your current decluttering efforts and minimalist lifestyle. I think it’s because, whatever you are doing, you are passionate about it and put your whole heart into it. The result is that, at least to me, you exude authenticity and I really appreciate that! Lots of love and light. ✨✨✨

I love your channel, Christine! I read Americans only use maybe 40% of their homes. So many are paying for space they’re not using and many are struggling financially. I will say both my parents, who are deceased, kept cards given to them. To see that they meant so much to them made my heart smile. I’ve kept mine over the years too. I have all the ones my son made me when he was growing up💙 My best friend and mom passed away unexpectedly in 2020. I can’t begin to express how much it means to me to have the cards with encouraging messages written in them she gave me. Every year on my birthday, I set them out. They make me cry, and smile, but I am so grateful I have them!

I feel like that's something I have gotten wrong over the years. I would only buy when I ran out of something, as I only have a small place and felt I was paying to store it. Now, I have seen prices nearly double in most cases for food, laundry and many other things. I'm kicking myself as so many of my life events have changed at the same time. I'm unable to work (as I'd planned to do) due to medical. Kudos for you putting things aside when the price is better. I don't think prices will improve soon. Best wishes from UK England x

Christine, My husband and I are exactly the same as you and Michael on all 48 points. We haven't had a TV for 35 years, no tech but internet and old iPhones, share one car (2006 Toyota Highlander, hauled 14 baby fruit trees for another small orchard plus bags of mulch in the back of it once - great car, love it), vegetarians (1995) then raw vegans (2010) - yes to B12, white vinegar, baking soda, ECOs detergent, Alaffia Everyday Shea hair/body soaps, just eye makeup and tinted lip balm (Kuumba Made "Dawn"- made in Tucson), and since Covid, started cutting mine and hubby's hair at home (terrified at first, but it's ok). Anyway, you've been very inspirational to me over the years, so thank you for opening yourself up to all of us. It really is appreciated.

I absolutely loved your video. I agree with all your advice. One comment about the Apple Watch. I live alone, am elderly, and I consider the watch to be a must-have for safety reasons. The watch will call 911 for me if it detects that I have fallen (or crashed). The watch is waterproof, so I wear it even while taking a shower. If I’m conscious and have had a medical emergency, I can call 911 or family member from my wrist. Yes, there are medical alert bracelets and necklaces, but I always swore I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing one of those 😂.

Christine...I actually wanted to add that if you do have groceries delivered..the employees are told to pick out items that are about to expire. That is their way of getting them sold instead of having to remove them later. Also...heck nooo..they did not know how to pick vegetables. They are probably 20 year old employees and have no clue what half the vegetables are anyway. So no one should fall into that consumer trap and believe there's a benefit. Ugh... 😒

It sometimes feels so daunting but i am taking it one drawer, one closet one room at a time and video's like this are very inspiring for me to keep up the journey. I too do not get any pleasure form designer clothes or handbags. I currently only have two handbags so goad to hear I'm not the only one. So a tip you might appreciate…
Sals Suds can be used for so many cleaning applications and it’s clean ingredients. It’s a small bottle (concentrated formula) I use it for an all purpose cleaner, clean my windows, floors…pretty much anything including to clean stains etc. I replaced my laundry detergent with it and now I just have the small 32oz size bottle in my laundry room. You only need a very small amount. I’ve even found it works for cleaning stainless steel appliances. I just keep a spray bottle of water with a tiny bit of the concentrate mixed in for any cleaning purpose. I love not having a ton of cleaning items.

I like that it tracks my steps, I can see if someone is trying to reach me without always having to have my phone on me and it reminds me to stand up during the day since i sit so much. I like the stone jewelry idea. Personally I don’t like a lot of decor either but have some wooden decorations that are seasonal like little wooden pumpkins or I crochet my own holiday decor like a Halloween cobweb, or decorative garland with little Christmas trees/ stars/ bunnies/ whatever. I made my own driftwood sailboat and crocheted a little sail for it out of jute twine and it’s very cute in my house since I live by the bay. I try to use things I already have in my home or that I can find outside to decorate with too like pinecones and branches. Almost all my makeup comes from dollar tree and I use it in the same way I would have used expensive makeup and still look great. Almost everything I get from dollar tree actually if I actually need it. Toiletries, yarn for crocheting with, any basic cleaning products like bleach for toilets, even socks. Fuzzy socks I got from there have lasted me a few years already. I rarely If ever shop otherwise and the difference in cost saves a lot of money as compared to buying most of those things elsewhere like at a supermarket or Walmart. I make my own dry shampoo from cornstarch and rosemary essential oil to add a nice scent. I wash my face and remove makeup with extra virgin olive oil and have for almost a decade now. I rarely shop for clothing since I’ve collected a lot of high quality clothing over the years that has held up really well from thrift stores and also given to me from relatives. I shop my house and before I go out to spend money on something I’ll look around to see if I can make it myself or scrounge something up/ put something together to get the look I want. I have very generous relatives who gift a lot during the holidays or whenever they visit that I haven’t had to buy any of the luxury goods that I own or kids clothes other than their shoes. I still have an iPhone 7 and a 2012 Honda Fit. I do love burning candles though and drinking tea. Tea and candles as well as earrings are always an appreciated gift to me.

Love your videos Christine. They are always some combination of inspiring, informative, and, calming. To answer your question, I do not buy paper towels, and instead use cotton clothing which has worn out, etc. I also buy about a third of the toilet paper. I used to use. Instead of wasting that money, and negatively impacting the environment, we purchased a bidet. A hand or hand diaper sprayer does the job too for a lower cost, low tech solution. A simple squeeze bottle, or pour over watering can worms too. We use white cotton baby wash cloths as toilet paper for patting off after a bidet rinse. Toilet paper os only used for the “solids.”

Christine.Hello.I just wish to say how much i enjoyed this video.First time seeing you,and what a pleasure.I was in an accident a couple of years ago and one of the permanant injuries is a brain injury. Now I am getting back on my feet, literally;I am changing many things in my life. Both practivally and because I feel differently or more strongly about many things.Ive been vegetarian since teens and an enthusiastic thrift store shopper with very eclectic taste.I will never be a minimalist or neutral colours person{also now I am legally blind,I would never be able to find anything!I enjoy bright clashy colours and crystals and candles. But i no longer want more stuff.I am learning to propegate plants for my balcony in recycled glass jars.I live it,oops, love it!I used to treat myself and my ex would treat me with cut flowers.I thought i would be sad withought them. Now i have and love green plants.Yes they do need looking after and sometimes this is difficult.Yet i love them.i am with you on many of your suggestions, even some random ones like not buying condements.I dont wander around thriftshops anymore finding trasures,I have enough. The other week i spent a long time,a couple of weeks really, being ruthless going through my clothes.I think I ended up with ten big rubbish bags for my local thrift shop. And tho it was very difficult to part with many;in the end I thought about the lucky people who would be so happy finding them.also the money the charity would make.My brain cannot handle much stress and it really is true what is said about simplicity and the peace there is in having less stuff.I dont have much money, but I have a secure roof over my head,a cosy safe home.I believe everybody needs a safe secure home as a basic human Right.I wanted to tell you two months ago i bought a few cans of full sugar coke{before the accident i never ever bought sugary drinks}within a month I was hopelessly addicted.Drinking 3 cans a day!that is how quickly it happened.I am weaning off it and when the last one is gone will go back to water. It just shocked me how quickly it happened. So I am drinking loads of water again and 2 cans left.Thank you for your calm advice, lots of simple things that I had not thought of.Please exscuse all spelling mistakes.best wishes from new subscriber in Ireland.

Thank you so much for being here, you really are helping me and others to feel truly happy about letting go stuff or habits that are really not important and not useful to us in our daily lives.

One question I have about minimalism when it comes to having only 1 pair of bed sheets, 1 coffee mug, etc etc... what do you do when you have guests spending the night? Or friends coming over, hosting dinner parties, etc?
I'm not a minimalist myself, but I still try to avoid too much stuff at home. Best thing I've done is unsubscribing to all "newsletters" from stores showing all the new things I can buy this week.

I’m a minimalist and I have two spare pillows, a spare set of sheets and a warm quilt for guests to use when they visit. My husband and I like to keep enough plates and cups that we don’t have to run the dishwasher daily, so when we do have guests we have enough plates, cups and utensils. I also have a nice set of serving dishes I like to bring out when we have guests which we typically do almost every month! We love having friends and family stay with us so we have a few extras in our cabinets to accommodate, but not an overwhelming amount.

Loved this video and I’ve been trying to declutter more clothes but I don’t sell it I donate it (not to thrift stores) or I give it away to people or family members… I’ve bought those wool dryer balls from Trader Joe’s and I no longer buy dryer sheets so that saves me money and I don’t buy fabric softener anymore, I don’t buy expensive makeup ever I buy cheap makeup at Walmart, Ross, & Marshalls, I don’t buy expensive name brand clothes but I actually have like Tommy H. & Calvin Klein because I got it cheap at Ross or Marshalls lol and I’ve also been decluttering cups and Tupperware in my kitchen and I don’t sell it I just leave out in front of my house so someone else can use it if I don’t need something I just give it away.

Hi Christine really enjoyed this video started watching you around 3 years ago when I was sorting my life out and going down the minimalist path went back and watched old videos of you decluttering x I stopped buying home decor also bad quality clothes that was a big one saved so much money also I too bought a designer bag and instantly regretted it cost me £1000 always wanted a Gucci bag used it twice and sold it on for £300 what a costly lesson but I did learn so draw a line under it and no more 😊 have a great week look forward to more vlogs best wishes from the uk 🇬🇧 x x

I love these kinds of videos and would love to hear a part two from the rest of the comments! Here are some things I don't buy: fast fashion/name brands first hand (if I do get some it's usually from the thrift store), soda, workout clothes/gear/equipment, plants and succulents, non-essential cat products (since we have two kitties, but we do have some cat toys that they love), subscriptions for things (I prefer the vintage media that I can usually find at an antique store/thrift store like a DVD or vinyl and actually having things I enjoy viewing/listening to rather than subscriptions of endless things I don't enjoy and most of the time these days it's another form of paying for ads), earrings, and most modern jewelry (my style in things I like is lots of antiques in a lot of things and can't find those brand new so I like to find them secondhand for a great deal), makeup and skincare, hairspray/dry shampoo, nail polish, non-essential shower products, jeans and shorts, and so much more! I love the simple lifestyle and to make it more plain and simplistic and less complicated and being content with the things I have and don't have!

I used to put out a small amount of Christmas stuff when our children were home, but that was a long time ago.

24:21 Haven't used our drier in a year. Bought a 100 foot x 1/4" line for the back yard and a 50' x 1/8" line for travel/indoors and haven't missed the drier a bit. Drier still works, I just find more peace out of hanging clothes and seeing them on the line like prayer flags. In Arizona towels will dry faster outside on the line than in a drier, guaranteed. Takes about 2 to 5 hours from late March to November where I live. Humidifies the house in the winter. Clothes last longer.

Oh my goodness. I watched your videos about raising monarchs wayyy back when they first came out! I was a little girl obsessed with monarchs and you were such an inspiration to me, now I'm 18 (still obsessed with monarchs!) and have always wanted to live a minimal intentional life. I was watching this wondering why you looked so similar! during my younger days I'd always watch your monarch videos over and over, year after year. Crazy how life works I'm now watching you again years later, in my third week of Uni in my little dorm room! Thank you for unknowingly (to you, and me until why i knew you clicked!) being with me through all the stages of my life :) love from New Zealand!

I am a new subscriber to your channel. I do not decorate for every holiday, I decorate for the season. Fall is my favorite season, Thanksgiving my favorite holiday! My Christmas decor carries over to Winter decor (except for the few items that are Christmas), Easter is incorporated into Spring decor , and my Summer decor goes up before Memorial Day and is switched to Fall decor the day after Labor Day! Even these few things are kept to a small amount. We (hubby and me) don’t eat out very often, saving that for birthdays and anniversary. I do use my dryer to dry clothes, and sheets and towels are washed in hot water. I have tried washing them in cold water, but I’m using the hot.
Your tips are spot on! And the ones I haven’t tried I definitely will! As a retired couple on a fixed income, cutting back on expenses is important!

There are a lot of things I do not and refuse to buy that is on your list.
But what I don’t buy that wasn’t on your list is: lash extensions, hair extensions or other expensive salon services. I dye my own hair and trim when needed. Manicures and pedicures. I can do all that myself. Make up. I will buy mascara from time to time. I will buy a good moisturizer for my lips. That’s the extent of makeup. High end clothes or shoes. Nope!
I have enjoyed your channel for years now. I hate to see your how to furniture/home decor make overs are no longer a thing but I get it.
I do love your gem and plant videos! Keep them coming. And thank you for all your hard work!
