Diving Secret Spot for LOBSTER in California!

- Let's freedive! Learn to catch, clean and cook southern CA lobster! WARNING: I forgot to film this and discuss it but I kept the carapace of each lobster in a bag in the cooler for transport just in case a warden stopped me and asked to measure them. It is not legal to transport tails alone as there is no way to measure the lobster. While it is best to keep the lobsters whole, after a day or so on ice once they die the gut contacting the meat will darken the meat and cause it to degrade rapidly after that. Since I was guiding for two more days after I caught these and was unable to freeze my bugs I chose to remove the tails but kept the carapace in the cooler as proof of the lobster's legal size.

Great video man! How can we stay updated for classes you are teaching? Wanna learn how to dive I live in Santa Barbara and would have loved to attend!
Thanks so much! If you email me at catchncookca@gmail and ask I will gladly add you to my email list. That is where I first announce what I will be guiding, where and when.
Awesome!!
I learned one thing in the great video and that was how to make my mouth water as you are eating those bugs!!!!!! Great job.
Another great one, these videos are authentic, educational and love Kevin's energy and love of the hobby. Keep sharing family he needs more views.
You’re an amazing teacher! So descriptive with every movement you make. Really good tips with every sentence.
Much appreciated Alex!
Amazing videos! I felt that comment about getting killed by your SO for not sharing the lobster 😂
That looks so good the side dishes looked more delicious than the lobsters . Be safe and blessed you two
@18:40 Diane's scream had me dead.💀🤣Those pesky yellowjackets are everywhere I'm at. Had one buzzing in my face during lunch today.
Great advice on entering! I've been guilty of the side straddle on the board 😅
Thanks! Me too. I hurt my back pretty bad one time doing it so I figured someone watching this could potentially learn from my mistake.
Smart man sharing with Diane!
lol, live to dive another day :)
Always great videos and Delicious meals from you and Diane. 💕🌟👍
Great video, I live in Oregon now but grew up in so CA and was lucky enough to work on fishing boats most of my life and lobster was always around in season and on the table alot. Meal looks delicious
Incredible Cali lesson, catch and cook. Thank you!!!
Thanks! It was a great dive and even better feast!
Stoked for you man! Solid pulls
Thanks!
I am in love with your content
This is amazing love your video!
Thanks!
I need Lobster now, one of my all time favorite! Nice video once again.
I hear you. Such a delicious crustacean!
Scoma’s used to have a dish call Arrogosta Portofino that was sautéed lobster chunks undercooked and removed from the pan. Pan sauce of brandy, Dijon, cream and tarragon. Back into the shell and topped with the sauce with a light dusting of Parm and broiled.
Sounds pretty darn good!
Very informative, great video to any new spearos out there
Thanks!
My mouth was watering watching you guys scarf !
Lol and it really was tastier than it looked!
need a drink with that great meal ! haha
That looks delicious!
great video!!!
Thank you!
dont apologize for that west coast california wind she blows when she blows great vid!
Thanks! That she does.
Another wonderful video! How long did you boil the lobster?
Thanks! About 10-12 min I think. I meant to write that somewhere on the video but forgot.
💛...oh my oh my...
Holy smokes, so good you can't help but dance!
It was indeed that good!
that's right hit it up with the ol bay seasoning!!
Dude, I love your spearfishing series. An end goal of mine for sure. I have gear but my partner and I are only practicing breath holds and keeping calm in the shallows at the moment. Do you talk about this stuff in any earlier vids in the series?
Thank you! Yeah, each vid in the series discusses tips on gear or dive technique or hunting technique.
Awesome videos man, this might be a stupid thing to ask but i think it would be awesome if you did a video talking a bit about sharks, such as if you've ever had much run in's with them when spearfishing and what are the due's and donts if you do encounter one. Im fairly new to spearfishing and everytime im bleeding a fish after shooting it i cant help but feel like im chumming the waters.
Not a stupid thing to ask at all. It is defiantly a risk and we all think about them from time to time. I have been just waiting for the right opportunity to get some friends and family together to chat shark encounters as a part of a vid.
The biomass of spiny lobsters is deep there’s lots of lobsters out there.
It sure is nice to see a healthy reef loaded with bugs that are in season! Always surprising how abundant they can be.
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 I really enjoy your channel and how you approach every aspect including the cooking. I’m disabled now and no longer able to dive, but I still have friends that provide me with some lobsters. I hope you saw the Scoma’s recipe that I posted. Good luck and God bless Kevin.
I'm catching my lobsters this year 🦞
Best of luck!
Your supper at the end with Diane was on SERIOUS 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Kevin.
More dunking in warm butter please.
Dying over here in the Arizona desert.☀️🌵
Many Blessings,
K.T.
P.S. Have you given thought to a puppy. Love heals the heart.
❤
No disrespect meant.
Thanks! We have just now started looking into a new pup.
@@catchncookcalifornia1574
Thrilled for you both. Can't wait to meet the new pupper.
Thank you,
K.T.
Hey Kevin! Thank you so much for all the videos! I’m setting up for first spearfishing board right now and I was wondering if you could give me some clarity around the float line or point me to a video you’ve already done on it. I saw how you attached it to the board in your guide on constructing that, but I’m confused about what to attach it to on the other end. I see you have it on your pry bar sometimes. Where do you put it when using a polespear? How do you connect it? Thank you so much 🙏
Thanks for watching and for reaching out! If I am using a pole spear then I keep the floatline attached to the pry bar and keep that and the pole spear in my hand while on the surface if swimming to a reef. Once I find a spot on the reef to hunt, I drop the pry bar which anchors the float. That way I am free to hunt with the pole spear and it is not attached to the float line. If I use a speargun I do clip the float line to the handle of the speargun though unless I am in thick kelp in which case I use the leash on the body board to attach it to a kelp stalk and I leave the boad anchored there and just trail the float line behind the gun unattached to the board so it flows through the kelp without getting tangled. Hope that helps!.
bro, Take me with you.
How far south of Big Sur will you start seeing spiny lobster? Like Pismo Beach area?
Yes. Although the vis is typically pretty bad around there.
Another amazing video! Quick question, is there any benefit to keeping the lobsters alive until you cook them or is it better to dispatch them immediately and just keep the tail?
Zach, I try to keep them alive as long as possible to keep them fresh. I take the tail off when I know it will be a day or two before I cook it as the gut contacting the meat after it dies will degrade the meat rapidly. HOWEVER it is illegal to transport tails without the associated carapace for a warden to measure. I totally forgot to mention this in the video but I did keep the carapace of each bug in a bag in the cooler to prove that they were legal sized if I was stopped by a warden.
Now that is a feast! What are your thoughts on the dangers of solo free-diving versus solo scuba-diving? I understand there are dangers in both but shallow water blackout is concerning to me.
Thanks! They are both very dangerous and absolutely not recommended. Many of the vids I shoot are just footage of me even though other divers are present (but prefer to stay off camera). Shallow water blackout is a very real concern... then again, so is a regulator malfunction at 80 feet which has happened to me on SCUBA. I guess it's about time I start sharing some stories on these videos huh?
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 Some quick cautionary tales. People's attention spans have grown short in this day and age of tiktok.
I need to fi d someo e to go free diving here lol , i got the waterproof case for my gopro this time lol 😅
I'm gonna launch the spearfishing forum soon so maybe you can find a local dive buddy through that? I hope!
Hey man! I’m in southern CA and wanting to get into diving so also need some buddies. Let me know if that sound like a plan and I can shoot my email so we can get in contact. Cheers!
@@mariodelsolar I'm in the SB area and am looking as well.
Are mashed potatos just irish guacamole? The way i eat them it is.
Lol I have never heard that but I guess so. We do eat a lot of them!
I have a fishing license but I don’t see a lobster record chart on it…. Where can I get the record chart? Will it cost extra for it?
You need to go to a Big 5 or Dick's sporting goods to buy a lobster card rather than getting it online. You will also need an ocean Enhancement Validation. They sell both. Good luck!
Did they stop moving because you put them on ice before ending them?
Yes. Putting them on ice slows them way down.
I've been watching you while Matt doesn't do shit
lol I will tell him he is missed.
