- Bee and wasp mimics are common insects that you might find in your yard. One key difference is the number of wings. Wasps and bees have four wings, while their mimics only have two. These mimics are a type of fly known as hoverflies, also called flower flies or syrphids.

Hoverflys are very good for both gardens and gardeners. As larvae, they live in the ground, and they eat pests that could damage the root system. When they mature, the adults actually pollinate flowers, just like bees. They are one of the most useful members of the fly family. they do though! hoverflies are one of the most advanced insects in the world, because they can stay completely still in the air, "hovering" just like hummingbirds. it's an ability that other flies, wasps, bees and nearly every other insect with wings lack.
hoverflies are incredibly important to the ecosystem. they're everywhere, they can't bite or sting or cause any harm whatsoever even though they look like bees/wasps BUT they're just as effective pollinators as them, heck they're even better!
and because they mimic bees and wasps; they don't have many enemies, since other predators would very much rather not eat that day instead of getting stung by one.

Hoverflys are great impersonators. Usually mix them up for a wasp. All of memebers of the fly species have two wings, its thought they had 4 but it adapted to have the back wings become something called Haltere, they detect rotations and movement in the air during flight
Don’t think I’ll be able to tell the difference while fearfully avoiding it for my life

Why is the wasp mimicking the hoverfly?

Personally, I'd give ants the top spot in the insect kingdom.
But wasps, bees and ants are all related to each other
@@ZTheLastViking yeah. Wasps are just the assholes of the insect world who are more akin to a neighborhood tough guy than a figure of authority. Ants are basically like little societies that operate like starship troopers except its bug against bug for them.
Yeah, if I'm not wrong, mimicry is pretty common in insects even for that reason too.. You know, if someone see you as a gangster(even if you aren't), they wouldn't want to bug you out..
@ihyaakmal5995 That also works the other way around with sea creatures using their body parts as lures that look like harmless fish to attract prey.
Or the human equivalent might be Kenneth Copeland the televangelist mimicing a good guy while possibly being lucifer himself in disguise 😄
The biggest gangsters usually wear suit and tie not face tattoos
i also give ants the top spot
@@ZTheLastViking
insects kind of boil down to hyper modified versions of three things: beetle, ant, or fly.
So crawlers, runners and flyers?
@@abhinavram7920 yeah to put it really simply. gets a little bit dicey with that because there are ant relatives that fly (queen ants as well as bees, hornets, etc) and beetles that also fly (ladybugs to name an example). not sure if there are members of the fly family that don’t fly but i would assume there is. you won’t however find any fly larvae that can fly (caterpillars, silk worms, maggots)

This feels like he’s about to say “it’s frozen on the inside”
You can see the "stirrups" really clearly on this one too (the vestigial wing remnants on flies, they are little yellow dots on this one) 👍
The reason flies only have one set of wings is because the rear pair evolved into structures called halteres. They're mechanosensory organs that help the fly detect gyroscopic forces during flight! They're why flies can correct their flight path so quickly if it's been disturbed.
It’s interesting how often evolution has turned one appendage into something else, but you very rarely see something grow from nothing.
Why is it that the flies couldn’t just grow halteres while keeping their 4 wings? Why must everything always lose something to gain something?
@@felixar90Because genes don't "know" to come up with something that doesn't already exist, so it's exceedingly rare for an entirely new structure to randomly appear. Versus a structure that already exists with different variations, and over time natural selection favors one variation over others to the point that it may be unrecognizable at a glance to the original structure
@@felixar90 also, a lot of the time the appendage can already do a primitive version of what the future appendage can. I imagine that, because wings are already thin membranes, they can detect some forces in the air and that makes them easy to just develop into dedicated sensors
imagine if you thought a wasp was a hoverfly
Where i live theres hoverflies and you can easily tell them apart because hoverfly is much smaller and stays in the same position in the air and kinda jumps into different positions
The flies also has two smaller wings that are not really used for flight but for control and are called halters.
