  • Well...it's time. Ever since I learned Medjay was the new hero released, I was doing research to learn what I could. Unfortunately there's not a whole lot concrete that I could get...but I did the best I could and I think this came out very well...at least I like to think so!
    I hope ya'll enjoy this episode, and please watch to the end to see a pretty nifty meme montage I threw together.
    GoGoDani video: • For Honor New Hero: ME...
    (please note: I did not use GoGoDani as my primary source for this video. I don't like stealing from other content creators for information. I used this visual because it's the best one I could think of for why Medjay's weapon is not practical).
    Marco Yolo's video: • Meet the Medjay [For H...
    (please note: I feel silly because I commented to Marco's video that I thought the Magistrate outfit was based on Ammit...but after further research I retract that statement and would argue it's actual Sobek. Sorry Marco if you read this, I stand corrected).

      It depends on what era and where in Egypt that each tale is told. Some believed Ra was the supreme god of Egyptian myth while others believe Osiris pre-mummification, others believe Amun, then later he was combined as Amun-Ra, there was also the Aten that was worshipped solely but that didn’t last long. My point is, Egyptian myth is very complicated and if you went back in time and asked who was the major ruler of the pantheon, you’d get multiple different answers

    Y'all know Bayek is black right? Im sudanese, he is sudanese. Hes from Siwa Egypt but he is a medjay by dna. Medjays are nubians, nubians are northern sudanese and southern egyptian. Thats why I think its funny when people say ancient Egypt isnt black. There were many, many people youd consider "black" if u saw them today, they have more of a black/arab mix look like many Ethiopians and sudanese have. I think the whole "we wuz kangz" things stems from hatred of black Americans who definitely are not related in dna to the ancient egyptians. But Ethiopians, Somalis, Sudanese are related to them ancestrally as they were all border nations and the kingdoms mixed.

      @RavenKnightYT  Před 2 lety +14

      In Southern Egypt, yes. They would be predominantly black, but in Northern Egypt you’d have a much more diverse mix of skin tone as it bordered asiatic and Mediterranean territories. And as the Medjay became less about ethnicity and more about occupation, the ethnicities who became Medjay might be diverse as well.
      And as for Bayek being black? That’s not relevant. He calls himself the “last Medjay,” implying he’s the last police Medjay in Egypt. In 47 BC, the Medjay police were no longer a thing.

    • @Andu_music
      @Andu_music Před 2 lety +8

      @@RavenKnightYT it is relevant. Im tired of ppl writing "we wuz kangz" on every ancient Egypt video. If it wasn't relevant than racists wouldn't be typing we wuz kangz everywhere. • @RavenKnightYT
      @RavenKnightYT  Před 2 lety +10

      @@Andu_music Okay let's settle down a second here. Bayek was not the subject of this video. Bayek referred to himself as 'THE LAST' Medjay. And his status and title was one of policing. Therefore, he was likely referring to Medjay as an occupation, not an ethnicity. That's why I said his skin color was irrelevant to this conversation.
      I did not say 'we wuz kangz' and I actually find the 'we wuz kangz' argument a laughable fallacy. I do not like 'we wuz kangz' as an argument, and when held up to historical scrutiny, it doesn't hold water.
      I pointed out in the video, and in previous videos, that Egypt was made up of Nubians, native Egyptians, and various other ethnicities. It was a melting pot of civilization, as the Nile was a center of culture and commerce. I do not see anything in what I said that would promote 'we waz kangz.' I also don't see anywhere in the video where I said Bayek wasn't black or say it is relevant that he was.

      Maybe Highlander and Gryphon, but Centurion and Gladiator are the great-grandaddies of knighthood. I mean, the Roman Empire dying and getting the Holy Roman Empire in their place for the remainder of older history? I'm not surprised that they're under the Knights' flag.

      @T Yeah, I have to agree. While it would be nice, the Iklwa is pretty basic of a weapon. Granted, they could use the Iwisa alongside the Iklwa to maybe make his moveset a bit more unique as there aren't many one handed clubs/maces in the game just yet, but I would think they would want to keep the Zulu's Ishlangu Shield...maybe.
      The Mongols I totally agree with. Not entirely sure what weapon they'll give them since if they do a saber or a type of scimitar, a saber/scimitar would be a bit difficult to make unique in comparison to all the other sword-wielding warriors in For Honor.

    Hey. I love your videos. Very informative. I thought I'd share my perspective on the fan axe. My Specialty is the ancient world, mainly ancient Greece during the classic and hellenistic but I do step into other cutlures. One of those being ancient Egypt. From all my years of studying egypt I have not found one reference to a "fan axe" There was a two handed axe they used in warfare and we have finds as well as in period depictions of them. And all the supposed in period depictins I've seen are merely warn down or misidenified depictions of ancient fans. Especially when they are shown along side soldiers people often think they are just another soldier carrying a weapon when what they are is simply... a fan boy. I imagine that at some point for a movie or game someone was looking for cool egyptian weapons, saw what they thought was a cool looking axe and made it so. As far as my research and opinion based on those factors is concerned. I don't believe it ever existed. I personally am disapointed they didn't go for shield and Khopesh or just the Khopesh on it's own since it was a status symbol of egypt or even they're version of a club. I personally wish there was some more representation of weapons from the ancient world. But that's just my thoughts on it.

    You see, I see a people talking about maybe we can get a Greek hero but the problem is Valkyrie kinda... Fucked that cause she basically has the spear and shield thing down.... I mean if they brought a Spartan (or to be less faction specific they can use "Hoplites") Ubisoft would have to make a completely different move set for a spear and shield hero. Which isn't impossible but isn't easy either since practically Valkyrie already uses most Spear wielding combat techniques.

    • @dragonbornexpress5650
      @dragonbornexpress5650 Před 2 lety +2

      I feel like one of the main ways to make a Hoplite hero different from Valkyrie is to make him a Heavy: Somewhat slow, lots of health, and high damage. We haven't had a new Heavy character since Jiang Jun back in Marching Fire, and it's easy to differentiate a Heavy "Hoplite" from Valkyrie's class of Hybrid. Greco-Roman armor, bronze shield, spear, and a ton of bulk ready to annihilate his opponents with a level of brutality rivaling even Centurion, which could present the Hoplites as perhaps rivals or even mentors to the Centurions. No clue what the main gimmick would be for this guy. That's just how I view it, though.

      @@mkdemigodzillawarrior. Perhaps, but, like I said, no clue what the main gimmick would be. Gotta be careful when mentioning the swords, though.
      Edit: The Kopis easily looks the most unique compared to the Xiphos, and is the most likely option for a Greek sword anyway because of, well, how unique it is. Apparently the design meant it could have swinging momentum comparable to an axe while still being a sword and therefore capable of stabbing, though it was also apparently a weapon more recommended for mounted combat rather than on foot. Turns out the Kopis also has much less representation compared to the Xiphos, though. Either way, mostly a backup weapon, especially the Xiphos.

    Edit: I misunderstood Raven's intent and thoughts on the topic. This comment is now null and void. I thought he was insulting slanderous for the complaint. I was wrong.
    I dont have much to say other than I love the history. I learned a lot here.
    however, you keep digging at slanderous when he has a fair arguement. no one likes preferential racial treatment against them(percieved or real). I have roman ancestry. and I can see how a black we wuz kangs joke centurion is offensive when done to other euro or asian characters. I wouldn't have even cared until the medjay thing came up. me and a buddy wanted to a joke duo with the whitest medjay and darkest raider. we cant now and it's just akward.
    to try and "protect ones cultural color washing" seems messed up when that principle is applied one way. hell, the american side of my family is mixed making me about 14% when we did an ancestry test. so technically why can't I make a light medjay to compliment my lived experience? I'm not serious on the last sentence as far as honoring it. my point is opens the door for a ridiculous amount of bs. we should point that finger at ubisoft.

      The problem is that Slanderous isn't intending to make a fair argument; Never has. He's just simply complaining because he can.

      I thought Raven brought it up because he thinks slanderous has a point. Watch his other videos and raven mentions he at least finds it a bit odd that African heros get preferential treatment. But a Black Viking is totally historical. Everything thing I have seen from Raven suggests he thinks Slanderous has a point. Its just a Can of Worms he doesn't really want to get into.

    • @RavenKnightYT
      @RavenKnightYT  Před 2 lety +3

      I'm not digging at Slanderous. In fact, I agree with him to a certain extent. I don't think it's racist what Ubisoft did with his skin, but I do think it's a double standard and inconsistent. If they only did it for historical accuracy, then why don't the other characters get the same treatment. I agree 100% with that.
      I only bring up Slanderous because HIS video was the one released that mentions this and talks about it. I am not attacking him or saying he's wrong. At no point do I say that I think he's wrong. The only thing I disagree with him on is that it's intentionally racist. I just think it's a stupid inconsistency that should have been handled better.
