Heroes in History: Kyoshin

    It's done...stop asking for it.
    Guys, you gotta understand, I was super excited to do Kyoshin's dedicated videos, but I need TIME. Putting together these videos takes research, and days of playing as them. I need to level them up, feel out the characters personalities, and do TONS of background reading. I knew very early on who the Kyoshin were likely based on, but I still have a process. But ever since the reveal of Kyoshin, people were demanding I release a Kyoshin video. I felt a lot of pressure to get it done quick for ya'll, while dealing with some demons of my own. I've got a raging oni that I battle daily (for those of you who love Japanese folklore like me, you'll understand that metaphor).
    But then I calmed down and remembered that there are plenty of people out there who genuinely are curious, but were respectful about this whole situation I'm in...so I finished the video for all of you.
    Now some of you likely noticed that this is a Heroes in History, and I usually don't release those until after the Analysis video. Normally that would be the order I do things in, but Analysis videos require more than history research, they require me to really analyze the playstyle of the characters, strategies to use with them, and a proper and objective analysis of their feats, executions, and character. That takes time. I won't do an analysis until I've at least reached reputation 8 with Kyoshin. So give me some more time on that. But Heroes in History is JUST about history, so that I can do pretty easily.
    I'll also say this video was a pain to make. I played for two days straight and couldn't get a good match in PvP. Eventually I had to just play a breach match with my brother so I could have some fun and relax. That's the footage I used until the ending. Sorry about that.

    you forgot something: when it's true they're fictional but based on Yamabushi, real life folklore depicted Tengu as Yamabushi, this is the "warrior" aspect of Yamabushi. Tengu often appeared to challenge arrogant warriors and teach them humility by defeat....who are the arrogant warriors? those of the Chimera and Horkos who were too caught up in their petty squabbles ruining the Kyoshin temple without regards.

      While Vergil is the character most people think of when seeing the “sheath to kill” move, he’s not the progenitor of it.
      The move actually originates from Fist of the North Star, in which the protagonist Kenshiro would swiftly punch or kick an opponent, only for the opponent to take all of the damage after the attack has ended.
      This trope was quickly adapted to katanas in fictional anime and manga, which inspired (or perhaps motivated) capcom to give it to Vergil.

Cause some sets have no armor, and same are full on samurai armor. Same for a Ronin, that’s a very vague term that could mean a lot of things. I love these videos, I didn’t even know that those monks actually existed. I love learning about what inspires these for Honor characters, even if some of them are a bit wacky like warmonger or Griffin. I do have one that pic though I feel like Zuko (I hope I’m spelling that right I’m probably not) Wasn’t necessarily the best example. He didn’t get his scar from his skill in battle or from a sacrifice to get strength. It came from essentially his disobedience to his father and their following Agni Ki (OK I definitely know I didn’t spell that right) Sorry I know it’s such a random that pick that was the only part of the video where I was like🤨. I do know most but not all of the other characters that you said and I did believe those were accurate so I thought that Zuko being there was a bit weird. Anyway I’ll shut up now great video.

    You definitely went decently into pop culture influence but there was some missing info on the history side. There seems to be at least minor reference to the Sohei class of warrior monks from feudal Japan in how Kyoshin’s cosmetics are designed. Especially later on. Helms like the Oni mask or Basket helm resemble mythical depictions of sohei using masks of yokai or specifically Oni, and common wandering monks respectably. With head pieces like the Oni mask having white straps that resemble the head-wrappings they would have.
    Meanwhile for the body, there’s a lot of usage of robes and kimonos, with the two prior helms being paired with very monk looking half robes. Yet also a lot of the armor, including the samurai armor (which sohei did use). Still use a lot of straps and wraps of lightly colored fabric compared to other samurai heroes. As well as wrappings around the neck resembling the base of where normal head wrappings would be. Giving even the full on armor, monk like qualities. Not to mention, the lack of a proper helmet option is something mimicked by sohei. As helmets were rarely used and only saw usage in the Sengoku Jidai.
    With all this, the Kyoshin lore-wise are basically monks to begin with. Or warriors of some kind of temple/religious order. So even if they visually had no reference to sohei, them being religious Japanese warriors already kind of makes them sohei.

    • @RavenKnightYT
      @RavenKnightYT  Před 2 lety

      You say they have no visual reference to Sohei, but your rationale for why they are is due to their clothing and cosmetics. So they do have a sohei appearance. While I agree Sohei we’re likely an influence, I stand by my position on the yamabushi…you know…that part in the video where I discussed their ideology and historical outlook in comparison to the kyoshin? You know…the history portion? I take slight umbrage at the insinuation that my video was mostly pop culture references more than history. I’m not denying that I failed to mention the Sohei were a possible reference, but I didn’t just ignore history either. I mention Yamabushi, Shugendo, and Onmyoji mages. I discuss historical and religious ideologies and folklore concerning spiritualism. This was not just pop culture.

    • @kaijuslayer3334
      @kaijuslayer3334 Před 2 lety +3

      @@RavenKnightYT I’m not saying you’re wrong. You already named multiple influences, there’s no one influence. I’m just naming one you missed given you didn’t give much on history, more of pop culture. Also I didn’t say they didn’t have a sohei appearance. I said at the end basically that, even if they didn’t, they would still be sohei in their actions. It was more of just me showing off that there would be a reference to sohei even if there were no visual references. Again, I wasn’t criticizing your take. I just thought the history aspect was missing a bit of information compared to the pop culture section. Especially with something as general and almost as iconic as the samurai like the sohei being said missing piece. This is “Heroes in History” after all.

    but the sword style Is Iaijutsu not Iaido because jutsu means you adapted it into your personal way making it more indepth meanwhile do is style in general and more basic. ((btw idk why they call the sword Shikomizue because in Japan it's Shirasaya, take in mind different regions of Japan speak different)) yes I am a Japanese and Buddhist, so if you have any questions... btw if you hear Koryu it's refering Battojutsu from Budo and that's Iaijutsu+Kenjutsu also he keeps the Shirasaya close like they do in Haidonggumdo((Korean Katana Style))

Basically you draw the katana's blade and re-sheaths back into the sheath, which Iaido is used to clear one's mind and focus on the imaginary opponent mentally. Just a suggestion but it may be easier to continue to do heros in history first from now on. To keep the annoying people who won't stop asking for it while your getting the character down for your hero analysis.
