- Welcome back to Heroes in History, and today it's time for us to finally talk about the Shaolin. It's kind of sad that I haven't done more on the Wu Lin on this channel, but that's changing as of now. I want to do some serious discussions on Chinese historical warriors and tactics, as well as history, and we're starting here.
I love Shaolin. He's easily on of my favorite Wu Lin, and his style is just sweet. He's also the easiest to research for because anyone can take a look at his name and style and figure out who he's based on. Shaolin is based on the actual Shaolin Monks of China. But what makes this so interesting is that shaolin monks still exist today, so this may be the first character in For Honor who has a modern day equivalent. But just how accurate is he? And is there possibly more to the Shaolin than just this one reference?
I really hope ya'll enjoy!
If you want a more indepth look at the Wu Lin and their accuracy in terms of martial arts, here is a link to Ranton's video where he does an outstanding job discussion the accuracies and inaccuracies: • Real Shaolin Disciple ...
Go give it a watch!
The Shaolin Translation clips are from TheMajorN's video which you can see here: • For Honor Season 12 Al...
Go give it a watch as well.
Thanks for watching! Leave a comment and a like if you enjoy, and don't forget to subscribe! - Hry
I think one of the best general summaries of why the Shaolin Monks became such legendary fighters was given by the narrator of the show "Deadliest Warrior" when the Shaolin Monks were featured on that show: "The Shaolin wanted nothing more than to live in passive solitude. But the outside world would not leave them alone."
I was literally thinking about ranton when watching this 😆
Who wouldn't?
Right
Is it just me or it that the one guy ranton talked about who trained with him at the temple and did the documentary he talked about at 7:45
Just the perfect person to think about.
Yeah, that's part of the reason I was nervous to do the Shaolin and the other Wu Lin. Ranton just did a far better job, and I knew people would point that out.
"I thought BDSM stood for Buddhism!" sanzang xuanzang probably (if you get the reference your a man of culture)
XD Oh my gosh…
@@RavenKnightYT it from Fate/GO, and sanzang xuanzang is a woman in the game.
My main problem with the For Honor version: No kung fu. Mostly staff work with a few kicks here and there. I studied Hung Gar kung fu (southern style Shaolin) a few years ago and from my first lesson, I was in utter pain from all the stretching. But I still know most of the positions I was taught.
I think if they implemented unarmed combat, not only would that be an unfair advantage, but as far as suspending your disbelief while playing For Honor, that would be way too far fetched. Especially since most of the warriors are armoured. How would a simple punch, even at its most powerful given the amount of kilojoules of kinetic force or whatever, it would not be enough to put a dent into the armour. So sorry if this version isn’t up to your standards, but I have a feeling you would complain about the lack of realising even if they only gave him kung fu moves
I am loving this series to the point I forgot about studying for my exams today. I just subbed, truly great and interesting work! Hoping for Aramusha soon (although I think he would be easy to look on for he's just a ronin)
I hope you start with the Wu Lin i am wholly curious about Nuxia and their story
just discovered this account a couple days ago and i ABSOLUTELY love this content ❤️
YEAAAAAGHHGH
I’ve been waiting for this man, thank you 🙏
I love that you cited Ranton in this video. He's good people! 😊
I would love to see tiandi or jian jung / guan yu next!
Keep up the great work!
Hey there nice video! There were a few things that I didn't know about such as female shaolin and I thought that there were none of them, hence there may have been a lady's sect which is a sister group to the shaolin or at least in age of wushu, if it's real. As for the training being reserved for higher masters, I do believe it as well. I don't know if its true or not, but for every dot on your head, the more complete your training was, with 9 being the most. The shaolin we have in the game seems to have 6 on his head implying that his training may not be complete all the way which is justified in ranton's video. Ranton did address how inflexible and how bad our shaolin from the game is compared to real life. I love this dude and all, but I only play him for the namesake. I don't like how they made him like a psychotic murder though. But nice video though!, Keep it up!
I kinda feel bad that he didn't bring up Shorinji Kempo, a martial art whose creator were a big fan of the shaolin temple, even quoting a great painting in the temple where monks were fighting together happy, and today exists as an idea to spread both understanding of selfdefense and in order to build strong people in their spirit as well
The weapon that is used in for honor is called a monkey staff, it is a shou lin weapon. It is essentially a heavy staff, it's one of the more advanced Kung fu weapons
Isn’t it called a Bō Staff?
@@ulfberht4431bo is japanese, or Okinawan more accurately. The hou gun, or "monkey staff" is of chinese origin, thicker and more flexible or sometimes shorter and made of iron. Inspired by the ryuji jingu bang of sun wukong fame.
4:08 that was the most country "find" I've heard on youtube.
My accent slips out from time to time.
Really cool vid
I, Daubeny, have always been purplexed by the Shaolin of the Wu-Lin. Holden Cross has taught me much about these peoples, and I must say, they are a fascinating kind.
I like the references Shaolin gets to sun wukong. Also I was not aware Jiang juns glaive was a monk weapon
Ah yes. I've been waiting for this.
That was almost perfect man. I actually spent 6 years with the shoalin. I wouldn't call then shoalin Buddhist as not every monk is Buddhist. I myself was at the time but there were those there that wasn't. There's defintly a lot that they do for the press for ex I've never heard one of them say anything like "it's cause your not balanced in your mind that your not achieving this" or any "spiritualism" like that. In fact very little of my actual stay there was spent training in the temple itself. There's a good number of shoalin themselves that don't belive in chi or anything like that. It was extremely brutal training I do remember that. Now as far as the weapons I can't say they would never a weighted staff. Maybe not traditionally but as far as I know in war you use what is most effective. Not to mention that they also teach several other weapons many of which involves blades. My preference was the staff but I leaned towards that becouse it was so versatile. Meaning you could use it to disarm, create distance, reach new heights in some cases literally. I can say as far as shoalin women. Well for thousands of years there wasn't not even a mention of them. Until that was mentioned but there was almost no proof presented with it. And I do know politically they are trying to become more progressive I guess is the right word. I'm going to let you fill I'm the blank with that. As women generally were not treated well among that time in China. So I really doubt that is true. And it defintly would be the first lie the temple told (insert Mr qi master blowing out candles with his "energy of the qi in his palm" here). I was however extremely disappointed to see that many of the martial arts was cut out with the monk. And some monks were allowed to have hair. That is a commentment you choose to make on your own walk not something that was forced upon you. If you are forced to do it, it looses its value. And there are seperate monks in the temple who are there entirely for the Buddhist aspect but are not shoalin warriors they are the shoalin Buddhist. But that is more of a newer thing back then almost all shoalin warriors would of probably been Buddhist.
Please do Nuxia and Zhanhu next. Thanks.
Just love the history of shaolin even the fictional versions. Just amazing.
And Ranton is just a great CZcamsr too. We don't get usually just get shaolin CZcamsrs.
U should definitely do some samurai and more wu lin
They need to give shaolin new armour that’s like actual shoalin robes
Yeah but as ranton said they are rather bland and boring and not good for the game, but I guess it’s good for authenticity. Imagine getting destroyed by a guy in just gray robes lmao
Shaolin is my main in FH. He may not be the best pick, but I have the most fun with him.
You forgot Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon!! That’s the definitive Wuxia film.
i was literally thinking about rantons video during the whole video. you should see if u can get him to upload more hahaha
I have no control of what Ranton does. One of the reasons I was not excited to do the Wu Lin is because most people are probably just going to point to his video and say how he does it better. :( Which is true. Ranton did a far better job discussing these warriors than I can.
It's finally here, the moment you've all been waiting for!
Big Iron
Can you do one on Orochi?
1:02 the swiss guard (aka what u say lawbringer is based on) are also still a thing too
Very obviously based off of wukong. Abit too much for my liking but still can be enjoyable. Even though you did make some errors it doesn’t stop this vid from being very enjoyable great job dude
The wax wood staff is indeed the standaard shaolin weapon but the weighted ratang staff like shaolin uses is actuely one of the weapons in the shaolin arsenal and I'm not 100% sure about it, but I do think acording to legend this was there war staff sow keeping that in mind the shaolin in for honor go into war sow that makes sense. The wax wood staff was there travel, training and selfdefence staff not there war staff.
Ive never heard of Ratang staffs, but I did look up rattan staffs which were staffs made of rattan wood in some bow staff construction, increasing their flexibility. I found no evidence of weighted staff usage in Shaolin martial arts. But I can’t be sure without further research.
@@RavenKnightYT the monkey staff has copper ends sow that's already one and sorry for bad grammer I have dyslecia. The once I meant were mostly seremonial and looks a bit like the head skins that have a similair look to a flanched mace.
@@joeyvanhaperen7715 *so.
Not "sow"

Can you do Orochi next please?
Mmm... Monke
Great Video And All But My Main Question Is If Your Hand Is Feeling Better?
Still bandaged up. I got a few second degree burns.
@@RavenKnightYT Okay Was Just A Little Worried
Thank you i will sleep after this
I think the reason shaolin looks different is he maybe a wandering or exiled monk
Does anybody know what the private video is in the playlist?
2:27 Ehhhh debate-able, at the very least.
Well yeah, it is debatable. The Buddha himself claimed that what he taught was not religious doctrine. However, many people today treat Buddhism as a religion, so it really depends on how you look at it.
Buddha: I'm not the messiah
Everyone: he is the messiah
He's not the messiah he's a very naughty boy
Now do one for highlander
Ta bien🤠👍🏿
can we get shugoki next
Jiang Jun's video is gonna be sad...
Even if it isn't accurate, I do like the whole monkey personality, since it is supposed to be used to taunt the opponent and annoy them.
I think the weights in the FH's Shaolin is due having to fight both physically bigger, technological advance opponents. Sure, you can bonk someone on the head with a stick and still would hurt, but if that person is wearing LB armor.. Good luck doing it without any extra weight
Warden: my skill with my longsword is unparalleled
Kensei: my displin and training makes me a deadly warrior with my sword
Raider: my dane axe is the end of your life i was trained since i was born
Sholin: stick + monkey fighting = peace
Highlander: Big sword + big streng = Big power
Nah for shaolin is I’ve been training since I was young and I’m able to use many things as a weapon asshat
Unfortunetly his wrists ornaments can't be deleted and won't be deleted in the next armors Ubi will give him because he parries with them.
yo i was just watching jiang jun 8:00
13:30 I know this is weird but at this point he should've said
Now u know the character history enjoy the gameplay
Sun Wukong: the only entity that’s like triple or quadruple immortal
Be water my friends.
Shaolin Aka MONKEY Man
(not Gryphon)
The shaolin also is the only hero who has armor that actually works
*on his arms*
I think the Shaolin in for honor is using the monkey staff martial art
Correct me if im wrong
Some of his execution even show that
I think karate is also inspired by kali
Don't forget the papal swiss guard
Already did them
@@RavenKnightYT I think he meant that they still exist in response to your comment about the Shaolin being the only group of warriors (or warrior) around today.

Thank you for so...kindly, pointing out that. I have gone back and added his video in the description.
No need to call me scummy for an oversight though.
