Heroes in History: Orochi

  • It took a long time and quite a bit of research...and frankly some frustrated acceptance. I really wanted to tell you that orochi was based on some super unique subclass or subcategory of Japanese warriors...but not really. They are samurai...so instead of trying to condense them down to just a sub group, I'm going to determine which era they are likely from by using their armor, weapons, and the references to media and pop culture.
    I do hope ya'll enjoy this one. It's a little different from my normal work, but I did put a lot into this, and I think I rewrote this script 3 or 4 time. Hahaha.
    Enjoy!

    Samurai lasted so long in history that they had both ultimate badasses and those who just used it as a status symbol. Knights were the same way. When an organization lasts for hundreds of years, they're going to have ups and downs.

    I would say that is one very informative video from you, dear sir. Thank you for breaking down not only the Orochi, but also the media's projection of the samurai as a whole.
    Now that's finished, all we're left now is Warlord, Raider, and Jiang Jun.

    I really enjoyed watching the series and learn who the beloved characters we play were based off on. I started playing as an Orochi just recently, and I've seen they got a backlash of hate (which I won't run away from a fight). But seeing this video, it made me want to play both as an Orochi and as a Kensei as well. Keep up the good content!

    On note about orochi's armor that you mentioned. While it is likely based off of the tosei gusoku there are some sets of his where the shoulder plates are segmented downward as opposed to upward. This is more of a European style so I wonder if it's kind of a nod to the nanban gusoku samurai later used during the sengoku period.

    • @eagle162
      @eagle162 Před 2 lety

      It's not Samurai armor already have that kind of style also they never adopt european-style kind of shoulder armor only some helmets and breastplates but that was more for fashion reasons as plate armor around in Japan before contact with Europeans.

    • @GeistDrachen
      @GeistDrachen Před 2 lety

      @@eagle162 I've never seen any samurai armor with that style of shoulder plate armor. I do know that they did use European styled helmets and chest plate armor but I've just never seen that style of armor for the shoulders. So I do find it interesting that Orochi has that style of armor.

    Orochi to me feels like an alternative representation of what a Shinobi could've been (Correct me if I'm wrong, but we're not sure what the Shinobi really looked like and if they really existed?).
    Weren't they basically assassins with a lot of tools in their arsenal? Maybe the Orochi may be what a Shinobi could've been in an actual battlefield.

    • @cyberneticxylem9614
      @cyberneticxylem9614 Před 6 měsíci

      That's actually accurate. Shinobi we're more or less samurai or ashigaru that pulled double duty as scouts and spies. Usually you didn't want them getting into combat situations without any other allied units or forces if possible when doing spycraft. What mattered with shinobi was that they returned at all costs with as much info as possible.

    Remember though for honor is alternate reality and they've been fighting for 1000 years. (The cataclysm took place in about 1000ad and the game is set in present day)
    This is why everyone's armour has regressed. After all vikings wore chainmail not leather. Samurai wore lamellar not wood and knights wore steel not cloth.

    • @CallanElliott
      @CallanElliott Před 8 měsíci +1

    I hate these guys because of that light spamming bullcrap they do!!
    I even uninstalled the game and left after the second samuari dlc, the one with the axe.
    I was curious 2 weeks ago about For Honor and looked up the game trailers.
    (I had barely kept up with the Wu-Lin’s first dlc, that general with the most boring trailer of him popping lanterns.)
    I had 0 ideas that this game had continued and I had come across the Unsung Knight and this Season 8 and all the various dlc after that.
    But THESE guys are the sole reason I had left, but now I redownloaded the game and have been playing for the last 2 weeks.

    Unfortunately For honor made it where the classic use of the Katana is seals and made another character that’s better. Tbh Ubisoft is terrible at balancing the game and making sure heroes don’t over power the other. Unfortunately they do. Not many wants to play Orochi bc of of Kyoshin have so many openers and points of counters over Orochi and many others who has more options than Orochi which unfortunately for Orochi has to spam a certain combo now.

    The medji period was the period that the sword ban took place not the edo period. In this period owning a sword wasn't illegal but being a roming samurai was. This was actually a time of very strict laws and a mixture of the shogun and Damiyo becoming one centralized government. Instead of several damiyo fighting for power. Thanks to oda nobunaga, and Tokugawa layasu and the power they gained during the warring states period. This period was called the edo period becouse there was very strict laws enforced on government officials and daiymos. One of the biggest was forcing them to reside in edo every year, as well as to do away with multiple castles per territory and only allowed 1. This Era ended by a American ship being found off the coast of Japan that forced Japan to open there doors to foreigners. As such a thing was not done before. The katana was a sword that was thin and curved. Which made it a treat choice for calvary as it allowed the rider to cut downward with the blade using the momentum of the horse to cut open there targets easily. It is a one sided blade that was used both for cutting and stabbing but more so for cutting. It was the main weapon of the samurai. Sorry it was that much in concrete in history. There is many myths about the blade and many truths about it. Such as the samurai practicing to draw it in a sitting position is true, but them being able to wield it with super speed or break another blade is false. It was revolutionary becouse of how sturdy something so thin was. It was also hardened in a very long and unique process. The reason katanas have so much of a reputation with the samurai wasn't becouse of how beautiful or anything like that. The katana was the most common weapon along with the Japanese spear found on battlefields by archeologist. Suggesting it's widespread use by samurai. This misinformation seems to be one of the things that historical enthusiasts meaning people who don't actually have a degree or work in history, gets very confused about. A historical enthusiast would be shad, Megatron, this youtuber ect. Also one thing that seems to confuse them greatly and most of the west for that matter is the edo period. Which is weird to me becouse they can understand the warring states period just fine which I think was way more confusing. And midevil politics and warfare in Europe seems even more confusing then that. My theory is how little this is talked about in western schools.

      Plus my man went on a rant about that anime.i watched that one to. They tried to say that it was like magic or something. But now that I think about it yeah they were defintly trying to pass off a katana as spiritual. Although the show itself wasn't bad it just ended at a point where I felt like it really should of had more to it.

    Could onna-bugeishas be male as well? Or were they female only? This question is about nobushi's historical counterpart.

    • @RavenKnightYT
      @RavenKnightYT  Před 2 lety +4

      Consider the word combination. Onna means “woman,” “Bu” is the shortened character for “warrior” or “fighter,” and “geisha” refers to maidens. So the word literally translates to “female warrior maidens.” They would not be male.
