The story concept is good..did you write it?
It's obvious that Hermen is evil somehow, but I don't understand the film, is hermeneutics responsible for the girl setting the bush on fire and the fire in Santa Barbara, if so, why?

It was creepy and every kid does this. They pick the weirdest thing they can find and attach to it. Then, it becomes some weird extension of their imagination much to every parents horror lol.

I agree with you. As a kid I used to be so attached to a character I saw in a comic that I even prayed to it for strength 😂😂
My parents were far too unsuperstitious to get any weird vibes from any of my creepy toys. No, the playthings that ended up in my possession became frightening extensions of my vivid imagination, much to my OWN horror... I remember being terrified of them coming to life in the night & killing me while I was asleep. Eventually, before getting rid of my toys altogether, I had to be sure to put every single one of my dolls, stuffed animals, action figures, etc. away in my closet & firmly latch the door shut before feeling safe enough to sleep. I would've locked that door if I could have.
You know you got money when you have a patio table with a built-in mini fire pit and a decorative water-feature slide into your pool.

I have watched a lot of Films from the Alter, But this one, kind if lost me. It really made no sense to me at all unless I was using my imagination

i might be wrong but I think there was soul inside the mr krabs and it swapped itself with the little boys body. So when were seeing him at the end with that brooding face is not actually him. I dunno why the little girl killed herself tho

The relevance to the Hermen never really materialized for me. This mystical character, with all his unique attributes, kept me waiting for some unique experience and insight, but it's quintessence fell flat. However, I thought that the rest of the quality of this film was excellent. Thank you for this experience.

I think ALTER's quality fluctuates DRASTICALLY. They are presenting other people's work, so it's not a reflection of the people behind ALTER's abilities, per se. This one was all aesthetic I think, nothing much going on in the plot.
Man I would spend the entire day watching ALTER's videos. They are so awesome and entertaining!!

Not the first Alter short film that isn't actually a short film, but more like a pilot for a TV series cut off less than halfway through. Is this inept screenwriting? All the other elements are top-notch, from casting through acting, camera work, editing, all the way to the creepy figurine. Kind of infuriating to see the high-end production values be hamstrung by the frustrating script.
A lot of student/"amateur" horror I see seems to think ambiguity in and of itself is enough to scare. Me, I like some explaining. There are hints here that the figurine is some kind of deity on a quest... The fire is his fault? Uh... why does he take vengeance out on the sister as if it's subservient to the boy, when just before, it (possibly) is the reason for the neighbor's unexplained trip to the hospital? I couldn't tell if some of the muffled dialogue was actually important to hear, or if it's intentional, and we're basically hearing things through the ears of a kid, who won't understand it.
Like you said, nice camera work, nice acting (except for the daughter)... in service of a script saying nothing though. It just chucks some ideas around and wants us to find what's scary about it.

@@rickyray2794 I like a story that has its act together, instead of leaving the work up to the audience to determine what it's all about. It's cheap that way, where the writer just has pretty ideas floating around in their head, and they throw them all out there without structure or reason. Like, I don't care how pretty the vase is, it's perched on an unbuilt coffee table.

After reading your comment (the writer), "based loosely on real events", and your explanation on finding a similar toy and family events that followed, I was really intrigued!
It reminds me of Annabelle, or similar objects that once in someone's possession bad things start to happen.

I thought this was one of the best Alters films. Acting was great too
I think "He has to get into the Volcano" is key one. Key two is Herman being placed in the back seat of Auntie's car that is clearly going back home to the heart of fireland.
Okay... I usually bite my tongue at all the comments on these Alter videos because every single person seems to think each video is the best thing ever but I have to say it... what exactly was the point? What was I missing? Some of these just straight up lack plot and depths (and of course some are really good.) But this was either an undeveloped story or went right over my head.

Cards on the table, I've watched and loved scores of horror shorts distributed by ALTER, but this was probably my least favorite to date.
It's not clear that anything supernatural was happening at all. Most of the strange events could be explained by both children being emotionally unwell. The adults' misfortunes were unfortunate, but not terribly unusual. California has wildfire problems with no help required from Herman. If the figurine was a problem, it would have been easily solved by dumping it in a faraway trash receptacle while the boy was sleeping. If the BOY were the problem, then pretending to have no idea what happened to Herman and helping the boy "look for him" would be a simple way to appease his temper. Not much was done to establish a character or motive for anybody, least of all Herman. The whole plot boils down to "this family is going through a lot, and maybe this toy from the beach is kind of an asshole?" The concept is interesting, but the execution is not.

That's why I appreciate ALTER because this evening me and my sweetheart went to beach to spent some time..drink beer took photos and now watching ALTER
so when i was 6 my family bought a beach house in Charleston, SC... and the first time we went (Summer, 1999) i lost a Buzz Lightyear toy (from Toy Story) in the sand.... and then 20 years later (Summer, 2019) i was digging with my 3 year old in the sand behind that SAME beach house (my family still owns it) AND FOUND THE BUZZ TOY... almost NO paint left on it, his clear acrylic face helmet looked like it was sand blasted (cause it basically had been) and you could JUST BARELY MAKE OUT THE "M" AND THE "S" WHERE I HAD PAINTED MY NAME ON THE BOTTOM OF HIS FOOT (like Andy did in the movie)... once i realized what it was I COULDNT BELIEVE IT i mean WHAT ARE THE ODDS ??? i was THE LAST PERSON TO SEE IT and then I FOUND IT after 20 YEARS... i know it sounds like a 'BUZZ FEED' feel good story... BUT ITS 100% TRUE... i laughed ALOT and almost cried a few times that day.... this jst made me think about that... thought i would share... thanx
I hope Herman doesn't get to those fires, look at the damage he has done to this family and friends already!
He was obviously dumped or erupted into the sea a long time ago and if he gets back to his volcano, or any large fires, his powers will be fully restored & the human race will be at the mercy of this Old One.
Wonderfully suggestive short with a Lovecraftian influence, I really enjoyed this. I very much hope that you get financed for the feature length.
Thanks to those that make this content. This one left me wanting more. The tone was right, the suspense was on point, and plenty of elements reminiscent of horror classics, but I never felt like it built to a satisfying payoff.
