- In this video we look at our personal top 5 most eccentric guitar virtuosos. When we say eccentric we mean those players who play in an unusual way, maybe thier techniques are unique, they use non-musical objects in their playing or they are known primarily for the eccentric behaviour they show.
We've tried to show clips of these guitar virtuosos when they are at their eccentric best. As the channel has grown it is clear our audience is on the ball when it comes to guitar shred knowledge, so if there are any unusual / eccentric shredders you want people to know about, get them stuck in the comment section.

Most folks have zero idea that when Ron was on a bus in the Philippines a few years back, there was a picture of him on the bus, that stated he was the soft-rock artist of the decade. Obviously a man of many, many talents. :-)

Ron Thal Playing Chopin’s Fantasia in Ab Major is just freaking incredible!!!
The piece at 5:18 is the Fantaisie Impromptu (in C# minor). It's opus 66, whereas the Fantasia in Ab Major is opus 61.

It's more incredible when you witness him playing it or something similar on your own guitar in your own house. Or when he uses your acoustic on the first EP he released.

Great choices, guys like Scott Mishoe bring me back to the glorious days when discovering such players was mindblowing! I personally would add Ron Jarzombek, still pushing boundaries nowadays

Ron Thal is currently in a band called Sons of Apollo. Check also his solo on his song Turn Around.
I remember Matius Eklund played in my local pub in Wishaw, Scotland ... What a night ! there was some others there that night Tom Quale, John Beckx ... it was an event set up by Local guitar teacher Andy Mc Glaughlin ... looking back it seems so random having these guys in my local pub playing amazing stuff... and of course ... we all got drunk !
I studied audio engineering with TJ and he'd play guitar for us sometimes, absolutely life-changing guitar influence.
I've seen Buckethead twice live and he's one of those guys that you can see and hear exactly what he's playing and you still can't comprehend that it is real. Every live long he went into like a 5 - 10 minute solo and you forget he's in the middle of a certain song and just get entranced. He played like a 15 minute version of Jordan that had some of the craziest licks I've ever heard. Love that guy
The first time I saw Buckethead I was 14, and my mind was blown. Been a fan for the last 25 years.
Buckethead is my favorite guitarist. And ichika of course. For me Buckethead and ichika are the most peaceful guitarist I ever heard.
Matthias IA Eklund is one guy who always mystefied me, love watching him play
Guitar is one of my favorite musical lnstruments...Playing Guitar is, lets say not a very easy task.this is why all those guitar player around the world,they are very lucky and tallented.specially those who live in a place like america.I hope all this guitar player live forever and keep shredding till the end 😊😊
All virtuoso players here but good to see Buckethead on this list he is well deserved and not in the main stream at all , I have seen him live twice and not kidding he could be the best living player alive right now , He had some high profile teachers when he picked up the guitar to the likes of Pebber Brown and Paul Gilbert at a young age , If you have Shawn lane giving you nods your doing it right just my opinion !
Great video! I am an old bastard, who has loved shred since the early days, so when I first saw this video title, I thought of three guitarists, Thal, Mishoe, and Buckethead. I was pleased to see that all three made your list, and I was curious who else would be included. I love Mathias, and TJ is a wonderful guitarist. As for adding musicians to this list, well, your criterion makes it interesting. Focusing on to play in an unusual way or to demonstrate unusual technique, I would give honorable mentions to Chris Poland, who has an unusual Jan Hammer pitch bend wheel style approach, I think he also has a finger deformity that affects his playing, I never have heard a guitarist who quite approaches his pitch bend wheel sound. Also, watching Michael Angelo Batio videos of him playing the double neck guitar, with a variety of ambidextrous techniques puts him into the eccentric category for me as well. Thank you for making such videos, keep up the great work! My favorite guitarists are Allan Holdsworth, Uli Roth, Shawn Lane, Jeff Beck, Steve Morse, and Frank Gambale. Add another thousand, maybe more, haha, that I love!

In my book, I put Ron Thal on top of the guitar pantheon, alongside Guthrie Govan. Their technical wizardry knows no bounds!
These dudes are some of my biggest inspirations. I love the thought of playing the instrument in unusual ways and making weird noises that sound from another planet lol

With RON THAL one also needs to emphasize not just his THIMBLE technique but also his work on FRETLESS SURFACES on the instrument...Mattias we all know about. Especially with his Freak Guitar albums apart from Freak Kitchen. The bass slap applied to the guitar guy I hadn't heard before. He's EXTRAORDINARY....Buckethead is more or less just the kill switch & whammy pedals....Mattias & Ron don't need whammy pedals for their high pitch stuff. Or octave devices.
This guy may have been a pioneer in the slap style, but players like Tim Henson (Polyphia) and Tobin Abasi (Animals As Leaders) have taken it to a whole new level.
TJ Helmrich is a beast of a player and such a cool guy.

I instantly thought of Buckethead, Bumblefoot, and Mattias Elkhund. I’d assume these could be classified as Avant-garde Shredders
Another that should be on the list is Jeff Loomis (Nevermore, Arch Enemy). His solo stuff is even more amazing than what he did in those bands.
And one more guy that no one would think of because he was really a country music guy (for those of you that old enough to remember him) is Roy Clark. Not a typical shredder by any means, but he could play as fast as anyone mentioned here.

Tom Morello is in no way a shredder. He just knows how to make unique noises on the guitar.

Ron Thal played with Hello Kitty acoustic in one video. I think he played Iron Maiden's Trooper, while combining the bass line and guitar harmonies. (not checking this)

There's better choices of video for Buckethead to see what else he does than shred. Check out the video of him playing Lebron in Kansas, where he starts doing animatronic/robot dancing during the last section, while still playing.
The video was trying to show his eccentric way of playing the guitar, which it did very well imo.
All of them are awesome shredders but Shawn Lane is still at the top of the mountain.

Maybe check out 8 finger freaks like Akihiko Onji,Terrance Hansen,William Dotto & an Indonesian cat Balywan (or something like that)also Richard Daude does the thimble thing too & there's a Guy who plays amazingly with His feet.
Jeff Watson from Night Ranger was the first I ever saw use the 8 finger technique. And Stanley Jordan has made a whole career using all 8 fingers on the neck.

Hmerich sounds like a smooth jazz radio guitarist who uses fingers for picking on the fretboard rather than on the strings over the pick ups. What is the big deal about that?
There is nothing innovative about Chapman. Here is a recording of Jimmie Webster doing the same 8 finger tapping in 1959.

All Chapman did was steal Jimmmie's technique and make an instrument that let him do it easier, what is the big deal about that? He is more of an instrument builder then a guitar player.

@@the_lespauley_studio6450 His first few albums weren't bad, but since then it has been the same stuff over and over and faster and faster. About 5 minutes of that is all I can take. People weren't copying his songwriting, they were just trying to copy his speed and we ended up with seemingly thousands of mindless neoclassical shredders. I prefer someone like Vai. He can play absolutely mind blowing difficult stuff, but it has personality. Yngwie just sounds like a robot now.
