Trump has used this strategy to conquer and divide this country. Just curious, I have never heard this quote from Hitler. Where is this referenced? I believe this is something he might have said, because, like Trump he ruled using lies and propaganda. A good reminder that the ‘alarmists’ weren’t motivated by political opposition but were recognizing how dangerous, historically, the rhetoric was and where it could lead if it wasn’t taken seriously.
The thing about being an alarmist that people don’t seem to appreciate... the abusive name calling and labels of ‘hysteric’ are much more tolerable than their fears being validated because if they are proven to be right, that means they failed.
I love that the Daily Show keeps reposting this interview and I will engage and promote it every time as I hope more people come to understand that it wasn’t about the man or his policies, but the effect and harm of dangerous rhetoric if not taken seriously. It is what allowed the absurd ideas of QAnon and Plandemic to take hold on such a large segment of the American population after all.
I remember being called alarmist for correctly predicting the pandemic, and also for predicting there would be 300k dead Americans by EOY.
I told people who dismissed me "I want to be wrong, but I'm not going to be and your attitude helps no one"

This brings into stark relief that role that Kellyanne Conway played in bringing "Alterrnate Facts" into the mainstream. From the White House, as counselor to the *president. I just watched an ABC special about white supremacy, and the role Trump has played in its resurgence. We have very dangerous times ahead, and we do need to learn from Germany. How did they address fascism and Nazism post WWII?
We have every child learn about the rise of fascism in great detail. We also discuss neo fascism and other related topics. We learn about the atrocities comitted and why everything fell into place the way it did. Ofcourse normal school often does not leave enough time for all that but it is still important that children are being educated about these things, rather than battles or troop movements for example. Apart from education we held open discussions about all the wrongs that were comitted so no one can plead ingorance or lie anymore.
We did not allow for it to became a taboo , instead we rather made it a very important topic everyone should know about. Ofcourse these are the after war generations, alot of the peole who were part of nazigermany just pretended like stuff never happened, wich was a huge point of conflict between parents and children. Read into the 68 movement.

@@user-jy3zl2vp4b In Germany, we teach like this. In addition to that, we have a lot of memorials and museums dedicated to teach about the victims, about the lives that were lost. If there have been statues or memorials of nazi generals, they have been removed immediately after the war.
In general, teaching and learning about fascism and ww2 in Germany largely centers around the way the nazi party came into power, the destruction that followed and the innocent lives that were lost. We don't focus on battles or generals or troop movements.

My aunt was French. One year she said, "I don't really like what is happening. I am going to vote for the socialists." Our major parties aren't even that far apart on their views until recently. I would like to see more choices but the ones with the most money are heard the most. That would call for election reform. I am not sure America has that in its DNA. Unfortunately.
I agree we need multiple parties, but that's really only a temporary solution. Eventually, those parties will merge again in order to amass power. That's how we got 2 parties to begin with. What we really need is legal accountability for politicians and political groups that lie this way.
Parliamentarian system is so much better, more inclusive, requires coalitions, etc.
I thought we did have multiple parties. Independent, libertarian. They just don't get any attention.
Timothy Snyder is a first class historian.
He is also typical of our profession in that people ignore our warnings till it is too late. We spend our lifes studying and learning every detail of our subjects, to be able to recognise patterns and issue warnings so that people can learn from the past.
And when we start warning, people ignore us and call us alarmists.
Thanks Trevor for bringing him on, even though it had been better to do four years ago. He said the same things then, many of us did.

Although if impeached the only punishment the congress can dish out a sitting President is removal from office that’s a sitting President however it says nothing about the President if not currently sitting! So since he would be President while the impeachment is handed down if convicted after he left it appears he can then be indicted lose his Security and pension! That would mean if convicted he could be sent to Jail!
Of course if he left the country before conviction it might be hard to get him extradited especially if he chose the protection of the Iranian Government! We’re not on good terms with them you know!

There is just no way to face and overcome a crisis if no one can agree on what's happening or what the reality even is. There can be no common sense when there is no common reality. With the internet and social media, people are only encountering what and who they already agree with, and there is nothing to make them consider other perspectives. That's why we're all fucked and it's only getting worse. It's time to seriously rethink what freedom of speech is truly supposed to be, and the RESPONSIBILITY that comes with it!

Holy crap - Timothy Snyder's description of how you kill democracy by attacking truth really seems to fit. I got chills, because he just described what I've been witnessing in the US... but I didn't really understand what it meant and the motivation behind it. Scary. Time to go buy that book.

I I have read Timothy Snyder's book "on tyranny". it is probably the clearest and the most succinct explanation of what we are going through at this period of time. If you are in the habit of reading at all you must have a copy of this for yourself I guarantee you'll be impressed.
