I got nothing but respect for someone who has been brainwashed as a child but can find his way out. That takes a level of strength that few possess.

@@urduib Questioning doesn't mean you just dismiss what you've been taught but merely means you are taking a hard look at what you've been taught instead of just blindly accepting it. What you've been taught may indeed be true but you won't know unless you do your own research. Growing up I was taught that black people are in the position that they are in because they refused to educate themselves and wanted things to be handed to them. But as I got older and did my own research I learned it was the total opposite of what I've been taught. My parents neglected to tell me everything our people did to insure that they stayed behind, I never even knew about the Tulsa Massacre until last year, that is something that should be required learning in every school in this country. I don't think my parents purposely dummied me down because they love me very much, but their lack of knowledge contributed to my lack of knowledge but there was always this feeling that I needed to see the world for myself and what I learned upended everything I was taught. Now some of my best friends are the same people they taught me to look down on. It's sad because so many people are in this same predicament but lack the will or the strength to question their teachings.
@@richardpage5812 Same, I don't know why the stereo-types placed on melanic Americans still persist... I was raised the same as you. Once I got on the workforce, and seen the hustle melanic people put forth, it was obvious which side of the contradiction was falsifiable as well as simply derisive.
It's my opinion that instead of counter-protesting we should try to get dialogue opened up, so we can try to find the root of their fear. I hate people who protest anyone's 1st Amendment, it's the speech we DON'T want to hear, that we should protect.
These nationalists somehow got the belief that 'white' people are being oppressed, silenced, and pushed out of the country or killed. When you march to their pleas and cries of fear, and tell them to shut up, and tell them to leave, and tell them how you wish them dead... Aren't you merely proving them correct?
This is proof that children aren't born hating others, but are taught to hate by adults.

Derek was the one that left white nationalism, as his father (Don Black - look him up, he led an attempted armed invasion of the island of Dominica to try to start a white nationalist nation) is one of the most powerful people in the movement.
The other guy is a journalist who initially wrote an excellent 2016 WaPo profile of Derek before writing this book, which is really worth reading and explains how thoroughly Derek's family excommunicated him. He tried to turn up at his father's birthday party after publicly coming out against white nationalism, and his entire extended family threatened to leave the party if Derek was allowed to stay.

@@sylviasworld9397 When it's your immediate family (the two people who conceived and gave birth to you and your siblings) don't even want to see your face or associate themselves with you, it's a little harder to say that. When your own father tells you it would be better if he never had you and even when his paternal feelings make him regretful and apologetic, still decides to ridicule you, it's probably not a relief or a liberating feeling. Especially when he's the only person in your family who would even talk to you.
Politics aside for a nanosecond, it always comes down to one thing: empathy. If you're willing to appreciate the struggle of the person next to you, walls won't get very far.

Empathy by nature is tied to ideology - which in itself is politics. The left side of the political spectrum is about empathy inherently. The right side of the political spectrum is individualist. It's the ratio of those two human traits that are the base of determining ideology. The in-debate for the left will always be "what is the best way to help everyone" and the in-debate for the right will always be "what is the best way to help *us*". It's inclusion versus exclusion.

They are truly remarkable. Digging yourself out of being brainwashed through your childhood. The strength and balls on these guys are of the charts
It can be done, but it's difficult to do. I think that a lot of people make the mistake of thinking that they can persuade a white nationalist, especially a Fascist, by being kind and compassionate towards them, but this doesn't work right away. Their worldview treats these as weaknesses, and when you demonstrate them, you're only convincing them that they're right, and that your tolerance has made you weak and cringe. The best results I've gotten are from being confident and _aggressive._ They don't expect this, and it can be unnerving when they see an anti-racist being firm and not giving any ground. This can crack their armor, and if they notice that they're always afraid and you're not, they might start to wonder why. Kindness and compassion are in abundant supply, but they have to put the gun down, first.

I agree. But we need more people like these guys to stand up for what’s right! The future of our country is literally in their hands. Let’s home these guys can influence others like them and more white folks in general to speak loudly and look at what’s in the best interest of America as a country, not just one group of people. Yeah and he has this really like, gentle/compassionate tone that's grounded in thoughtfulness. He just seems like genuinely good people.

He's a kid from the wrong side of the tracks. I think this single fact is probably the big reason he's got a good head on his shoulders and is empathetic. That and like any brown or black mom, his momma wasn't afraid to spank if he was being naughty.
He is an excellent interviewer; he creates incredible, memorable conversations that have a huge impact. Not only is he skilled at conversation, but he is clearly prepared for the subjects they are going to talk about with very insightful commentary.
These guys didn’t just change their views, they changed their lives, families and friends. It’s very impressive.

It's rare, and dangerous at this time. Derek Black just told us how to shut down white nationalist recruiting techniques. He just gave us a very powerful tool against racists -- a tool they're not gonna like!
It is so refreshing to hear a white American male plainly admit that “America was founded as a white supremacist country” and “being a white nationalist is saying that things are fine as they are and you’re good and don’t give ‘em an inch if they call you a racist”. How the majority of white America is ok with this status quo is beyond me. More honest conversations like this are very necessary.

It's easier for a lot of white americans stay silent and do nothing than to admit that there is a race equality in U.S. and that they have to change it. Also after this year events it's become more obvious to people in EU (im European) that U.S. is a racist country. You have ignorant people everywhere, but I have yet to see a truly ignorant person in my life. People kinda look at me sometimes funny, but when they spoke to me, they kinda forget your color. I do have to say though that every GF I've had had a family that wasn't too much happy that they daughter is dating person of color even though I was smart and had great paying job. So I guess we have to wait another 30 years until new generation takes over.
As a white guy, I totally agree, but unlike you, it is not beyond me how people can be OK with the status quo. I was part of that status quo for a long time; in some regards I still am. The thing about being white is that it doesn't feel like you are privileged. The way you experience privilege is just as the absence of trouble; you still have to work for your living, you still face the normal ups and downs of careers and lives and whether you got into college and so on. It is just you don't have anyone actively hating you or holding you back from success. It's really hard to notice the absence of trouble; you don't notice it until you get to know people who endure the trouble you are missing, i.e. black people. Even then, as a white guy, there is a really strong taboo against talking about racial issues with black people, even close friends; you are always super worried you will say the wrong thing, and your friend will think you are racist. The easiest way to ensure I don't offend is to not say anything at all. Trouble is, that silence ensures that I never learn the realities lived by others, and I never see my own absence of trouble. So, the status quo is easy to maintain. Insidiously easy.
Sad how many black people engage in white supremacy once they gain wealth. They go silent, feel superior to poorer blacks, throw them under the bus and marry lesser than whites who will carry them to the cleaners at the first sight of trouble.
When my daughter was in school, I told her "Do not align yourself with one particular group of people. Be friendly towards everyone, especially those smart in Math because child, I can't help you there." The result of that is a young adult who can navigate her way through any group of people regardless to their race/ethnicity and social status. People always ask me how did I raise such a likeable socially intelligent child when I myself can be quite the introvert. My response is always..."That's how I chose to raise her." People have a choice in how to raise their kids and sometimes it does mean moving out of one's comfort zones. Hating someone just because they are different from you is definitely not an option in my household. An asshole is an asshole regardless to race and/or ethnicity.

Yes, for survival, it was natural for humans to be on guard but to establish a system of, “our skin color is light therefore I’m better than you”, is not encoded in our DNA or an evolutionary trait...like at all. It could have been done and, in fact, has been done. There are many examples of different societies and nations having healthy first contact situations and being able to come together through diplomatic means.

A few years ago I told a racist joke, and a friend said very bluntly to me, “That was racist,” and held eye contact. That was when I finally got it. I’m 19 btw and grew up in a 1/2 progressive, 1/2 conservative family... That moment taught me that if I had to make fun of others in any sense, to make sure others didn’t see me as a ‘special snowflake’... THAT was being a snowflake. You know what’s the opposite of being a snowflake? Standing up for others without expecting recognition for it

When i was like 14 or 15 years old i did the same:/ i wish somebody would have called me out on those racist "jokes". Maybe i would have realized earlier that i was being a shitty, racist idiot and that i should educate myself about this stuff..

People are not taught to hate. Hate is an emotion just as natural as love. The important thing is to quickly learn to control your emotions eather it is love, hate or jealousy for that matter.
I think it is alot of lies about nationalism, because Im a European national socialist and don’t hate other people because of it.
I think this young man grew up in a household with blind hatred for other races, but thats typical in the USA.
Just compare national socialist Germany to USA in the 30’s. Jesse owens was greeted as a sports-hero by Hitler and the German people, but in the USA he wasn’t almost greeted at all. Just read Jesse owen’s diary.
In Europe we real ethno nationalist always have given respect to people that deserved respect nomatter race, but in america you have a History of hatred among whites, mexicans and Blacks. The biggest hatred I heard people from your continent mention is between mexican gangs and afro-americans.
But it doesn’t fit the elite politician or media’s time talking about, because they want to genocide the white people in USA and also in Europe. So they LIE all the time about Europeans that want to serve their racial interests.

@@nord2397 The only hate that is natural is the hate derived from something that doesn't fit one's best interest or inhibits one's best interest from taking place... but hating other's because of race or religion is unnatural, that is hate taught. Which is specified in the first part of my quote. Analyse with prudence before giving your opinion because it makes it seem like you don't care about the context you just want to have something to say.

What was immoral and wrong about being a white nationalist?
Admitting you were wrong, misinformed or uninformed is tough, but once you do, that truly is uplifting.
As a white kid, I would often get offended, when other white people would say racist things to, or in front of me, assuming that just because we shared the same skin color, that we also shared the same prejudices. Unless the person was really old, I never had a problem, making it clear that I didn't share their beliefs or rethoric. Most of the time they would immediately start backpedaling or claim they were joking, even when it was clear that they meant every word. I usually gave old people a pass, partially out of respect for my elders (thats how I was raised), but mostly because they weren't worth arguing with. In the elderly, those beliefs, are too ingrained, to be changed buy some young kid. Now though, I'm in my 40's and I enjoy making racists uncomfortable. When a guy looks around to make sure no one else will hear him, and then proceds to tell a racist joke, I like to respond, "I don't get it" then I make him explain how the joke is funny, then Loudly I say "oh ok I get it... you think it's funny because it's making fun of ___________ people." If possible I'll invite someone over of the insulted race, and ask them to repeat the joke. When they demure or refuse, I will remind them how funny the joke was, and act confused how they can forget a joke they just told. To me that is hilarious 🤣
when people tell racist jokes in front of me, as they're laughing I make them think I'm about to tell a racist joke as well and i say "you know what you call a black person with a PhD in medicine?" and they think an actual punchline is coming but I just yell "A DOCTOR, YOU FUCKING RACIST!"

Something else that leads to hate is when people feel hated by another group. The anti-white prejudice is strong in many environments where whites are poor, and the minority. It doesn't excuse their returned hatred, but all factors leading to racism should be addressed.
@@anacom4238 Sadly, poverty levels the playing field. I was unemployed for almost 5 years. It is demoralizing. When I would go to sign up for assistance, I see people of all races in those lines. Whites included. Hate can manifest from envy, as well.

Poor and working class white people are NOT routinely being murdered and brutalized by law enforcement with impunity.
They are not languishing in prisons in hugely disproportionate numbers.

Listen again to the interview. Some of the points these courageous young men make are about white people needing to challenge their own indoctrination and societal narratives.
No..being poor is not the same thing as being black in this country.
We are less than 12 percent of the population. Racism IS A WHITE PEOPLE PROBLEM.....and it's not just a choice of being against racism. It's the RESPONSIBILITY of being ACTIVELY anti racist.
The poor and working class people in this country are being exploited and abused and racism is a big part of the problem. If we were all focused on the real issues we would be able to heal this country for all of us.
I read the book and I just have to say, Derek has a courage that a lot of us will never know. Thank you to Derek for having a mindset that can be changed and for sharing your path to change with us. If more people were willing to admit when they've been wrong the world would be a much better place.

Years ago I saw the article Eli Saslow wrote about this and contacted him personally as the story was so beautifully written. A couple of years later I got an email from him saying that he had published a book of the story - partially because of direct feedback like that. Great to see an interview with Eli and Derek about this story!
This guy challenging his own beliefs and admitting it and actively changing....hats off to him it takes enormous courage and thoughtfulness.
I grew up racist in a racist city (Boston). I was in college, 20 or so, when a switch got flipped and I realized the absurdity of racism. It was literally that quick. For me, I realized that my racism was not born of hatred, but rather ignorance. Racism is embedded in Boston; it’s an indelible part of life there. Once I was able to get out of that environment, I was able to get out of that mindset. I talk often of this because I believe people need to hear a first hand account of how racist is taught and can therefore be untaught.
It's the opposite here in Chicago. Growing up, there was a lot of racism against White kids in school. We had to stand up and fight back.

In part because they played a smaller role in is life, and also because he was a product of the time in these subjects. Overall this doesn’t need to stain his image in terms of what he did for the black movement, which was immense, nor the quotes that he said in relation to a very specific subject. It does take a toll on his character as an overall human, but at this point in time we don’t, and probably won’t for some time, weigh his flaws above his greatness. Cheers.

It would be nice, unfortunately you can only control you and your household. While you may have been raised not to hate people because they are different from you, please note; there are others raising their kids to do the exact opposite. From the 1st time I saw the Klan directly in Louisianan in 1978 to today, the only things that have changed is technology and the dates. Hate is a powerful thing, very hard to combat alone. Very hard.

They weren't both white supremacists. Derek is the one who was raised with racist and xenophobic beliefs and became a vocal white supremacist. The other guy is a journalist who simply contacted him later in life to write his story so he was never a white supremacist. Just thought I'd clarify as I've read the book.

Yes. I think that we need to be more open to these conversations here in the U.S. Trevor has said that they have these difficult conversations in South Africa. I wouldn't be surprised if this interview was his idea and not just something that the producers had him do.

This was sooo powerful, coming straight from the horse's mouth, speaking out against racism is the best thing you can do.

These men are talking about EMPATHY. The guy on the right hit it hard twice: "If I'm driven by what DOESN'T hurt people, what makes life better FOR people..." and 'Silence is a choice.' Having empathy for all, even those we don't agree with, is the only way to progress. These gentlemen are a perfect example. They held extreme ideas and were raised in that environment, but they were still able to change their minds and be empathetic. This is something that we all must remember. If we want change, we must be empathetic toward those we disagree with. They will never see a different perspective if you only show them hate.

Basically yes! Thinking of people of other races as just people, and humanizing them as opposed to dehumanizing them. Seeing the world from their perspective, and yes, empathy for your fellow humans on this planet. They are just like you and me. They love, they have fears and worries, they want what's best for their families, they are mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, husbands and wives. They are not evil. They are our brothers and sisters. They are part of our human family.
If you think of people like that it's really hard to be a racist.

@@michelleb4940 that is true, and that takes empathy, however, my comment was about empathy for the people caught up in extremist ideology. If other people had not shown empathy for these two men, they may have stayed hate-filled, bigoted extremists. Being empathetic toward people we disagree with is a tall order, but it is the only way to move forward and to actually create change.

It is like lying by saying nothing. Whether it is something being said ,that you know isn't the truth, or if something that occurred but no one steps forward to tell the true account, knowing different. People are lazy and don't want to be bothered more than ignorant or even scared. It is simply an inconvenience, which I think is just horseshit of excuse. This problem has grown wings and is taking flight though and if is about time! Sometimes people need a good swift kick in the ass ,to encourage them to act.
