  • How did Shays' Rebellion happen, and how does it fit into the larger story of the Articles of Confederation and the US Constitution?

With how infrequently historia civilis uploads, this is a nice thing to bridge the gap. It also stands on its own, keep it up!

I'm not sure if your choice of the anarcho-communist flag to represent the Shaysites was intentional or not, but if so...based.

I was really going for the rebel flag in Europa Universalis but a few of you guys have mentioned that to me!

The Shays rebellion was an example of "States rights gone mad". Under the articles of the Confederation states could essentially pass any tax law they wanted and print limitless amounts of money. When this resorted in a violent backlash, the federal government had to just let it play out since they didn't have the power to pass taxes to pay for a militia. No wonder the constitution contained restrictions on the states ability to print money and pass tax laws.

The Constitution does not contain any restrictions on the ability of states to raise any taxes they want.

Those are for tariffs which would have impacted the single market and free trade area that most states wanted to create.

Yes, very minimal restrictions that had little to do with the actual subject of the video, domestic taxation.

Can Daniel Shays be credited as the man responsible for the US Constitution?

    • @keystonehistory

I'd say that if the US Constitution was the result of just one man it would have been done away with a long time ago.
