Ship Crashes Into Bridge, Causing It to Collapse

- The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland was struck by a container ship overnight. Now, the search is on for survivors after parts of the bridge snapped off, sending vehicles and some road crew workers into the water. So far, at least two people have been rescued. Authorities believe there are about seven more people that need to be accounted for. Inside Edition Digital has more.

The power plant in the ship shut down. The investigation will be to determine whether the crew did something wrong out if it was just bad luck.

The crew said that the engine was totally shutdown, with no power, it's impossible for the big container ship to do evade manuver tobavoid this bridge.
We don't know it is true or not until police finish their investigation
Love what the mayor said, that’s the only thing that should matter right now. Let’s make sure everyone is accounted for not just the workers on the bridge but also those crossing the bridge in cars. So scary to think what those people experienced. My condolences.

Ships regularly go underneath to reach baltimores ports. The ship had mechanical issues, and lost steering from what I've heard
It’s a tall bridge boats of all sizes always go through the under side with no issues however in this case the large shipping boat was experiencing major power failures along with steering and a boat with no steering is the worst possible thing
I have family members who crossed the bridge just recently as its their route to home. That thought scares me, and I’m grateful they chose the right day to leave.

That bridge means a lot to people to communicate back-and-forth a lot of people use that bridge in the daytime to go to work. It’s horrible. I’ve been over the bridge in hate bridges Bay Bridge scared me going over it 4 miles long

I used that bridge all the time to visit my grandparents who live in the east coast, I only recently found out about this through my sister since I hardly keep-up with the latest news myself, I’m horrified this happened and my thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and their families!
I use to live in Middle River in Baltimore County then moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland since I was 3 years old in April 2010 and my family and I would take the Francis Scott Key Bridge to get to my other family members' houses by visiting them occasionally for most of my childhood and now the boat underfortunely hit the pillar of the bridge causing it to collapse. I feel really horrible for the folks that fell in the Patasco River. Hopefully they will be rescued. Stay safe out there people and God bless you all.

Why did the ship not give prior warning if they "lost power"!!? They could have closed the bridge off completely, and no one would have been hurt. Were probably all sleeping or messing around with their phones!

Similar incident happened in sweden 1980 when the bridge ”Tjörnbron” collapsed. Deaths could have been prevented. Because it gets very dark at night including bad weather people where driving off the edge and crashing from 40 meters with their cars. They couldnt see that the road was completely gone.

That bridge collapsed in seconds. It's sad. The bridge took 5 years to build from 1972 to 1977. And now the bridge has taken 6 more lives and who knows maybe more.

The ship lost power. They dropped the anchor and tried to reverse thrust, but it turned the ship into the pillar instead of away from it. Had they just let it coast and used the rudder to steer, it would have missed the bridge.
There was a Chesapeake Pilot Master and. Ship’s Captain on board who made that decision.

The ship had already left port, turned around, and was underway. You don't need tugs at that point.

Could the boat had dropped anchor the moment they knew there was a mechanical malfunction, in order to slow/halt the boat?
By dropping the anchor which they did it caused the ship to change directions into the pillar mind you the anchor isn’t automatically stop a large ship like that anytime fast if they didn’t do that there is a much higher chance it would of crashed into the coast whatever is off the the sides which would of been better then the bridge

Interestingly enough, if you look closely, there were no vehicles crossing the bridge at the time of impact and collapse... It appears that there were only service vehicles on the bridge. Did something or someone stop the traffic? Because the traffic was continuous up until the impact and collapse...
