  • After moving the shop to the new 2,500 sq.ft. facility, i came to a realization. I have to move stuff so much further than i used to. This is a problem. It's so inefficient. So i took some time, and looked up some of the big plastic carts from the home store. These things are minimum $70 a pop per cart! So I obviously went the DIY Route and built my own! For less than $80 in plywood i got 2 sheets of 1/2" plywood, and built my own. I have a bucket of casters luckily that i have sitting in the corner from old projects and finds, so i used those for the rollers and got creative! One thing I was stoked about was being able to customize these carts. So i named them with some creative names ( Cart-2-D2 and Cart Simpson) and had some fun with it. To make it fun for yinz guys I also created a

    Hey John. I am a newbie at woodworking and one of the most daunting aspects to woodworking is understanding joinery and when/where it is most appropriate. You made a statement toward the beginning of the video regarding why you hate them and how people are using them incorrectly. You mentioned table tops. What are the correct joinery methods? I have seen videos where they use pocket holes and honestly...it gave me confidence that I could build a good dinner table using that joinery. Now I am not sure what to think. I appreciate your honesty and it keeps me coming back for more wisdom for my arsenal.

    • @John_Malecki
      @John_Malecki  Před 5 lety +1

      Well Andy thank you for asking. A panel or table top should be glued up with jointed edges and wood glue in clamps. Pocket holes in material over 3/4 puts all the pressure in the bottom half of the joint and can bow easily. Gluing and clamping straight boards is faster and more effective . And you can reinforce with biscuits or dominos

    I am totally building this. I already downloaded the plans, bought the wood and wheels. Nearly time to start cutting, but I had a question... Why did you add a shelf support? It looks like the bottom of the shelf is screwed into the sides and the sides are supported by the legs. Are the shelf supports members needed for additional reinforcement of the other joinery?

    I'd probably hate pocket holes too if I didn't install them right.
    Don't know what's up with that jig, but those types of pocket screws should work fine and end up below the surface. When you using thin material you have to use those short one with the weird head, but I've never had them sit like that before, even in 12mm stock. From the looks of where the screws are sitting up, and where the holes comes out the bottom if you pause at 3:48, it looks like the jig was set too far down. And if was up slightly, the hole would have come out closer to center, there would be more room for the screw to fit into as well.

    • @John_Malecki

      I simply shouldve used 3/4" Ply i think

    • @PBMS123
      @PBMS123 Před 5 lety

      @@John_Malecki Don't know ply you have available, but at least for me in Australia, albeit, it is construction ply with a lower quality finish, for a shop cart it's probably not all that important, and nothing a quick sand won't fix.
      We have ply available in almost all ODD numbered mm from 3mm. Currently at least I can get 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25mm ply. The 12, 19mm options match with 1/2 and 3/4"
      For small project, 12mm is alright, and then for large projects, 19mm(3/4) is good. But there are some inte middle projects where 12mm is too thin, and 19mm (3/4) is too thick. So I like using 15mm for those. 15mm is roughly 5/8 I think.
