- After moving the shop to the new 2,500 sq.ft. facility, i came to a realization. I have to move stuff so much further than i used to. This is a problem. It's so inefficient. So i took some time, and looked up some of the big plastic carts from the home store. These things are minimum $70 a pop per cart! So I obviously went the DIY Route and built my own! For less than $80 in plywood i got 2 sheets of 1/2" plywood, and built my own. I have a bucket of casters luckily that i have sitting in the corner from old projects and finds, so i used those for the rollers and got creative! One thing I was stoked about was being able to customize these carts. So i named them with some creative names ( Cart-2-D2 and Cart Simpson) and had some fun with it. To make it fun for yinz guys I also created a

John Malecki “Cartimus Maximus”
Cartman, definitely!
Nice build and video! Thanks for the plans!
Great set of cars. Love Cart 2 D2. Thanks for the plans
GLad you enjoyed them!
Great work John!
Love the carts
Oh Yeah, I need some of these carts in my shop. Thanks for the plans!
Crush it dude!
brilliant elegant design ans build video. thanks
Thanks John!! I'm going to build a cart just like this today :)
Love the shop carts
Thanks man we're loving them too!
Another awesome job! Cart-2-D-3
Excellent design
Thanks Ron!
I love the idea that you could throw some clamps on two carts to make one big boy cart for larger or awkward things.
yea clamps on the cart are a nice efficient move IMO
Like everyone does, I was gonna go with the Kreg PH jig. Then when I went to a woodworking show in Seacaucus, NJ I came across the one you’re using. I thought it was very cool so I just might go with that one.
Dang those carts are awesome! Not gonna lie, I'm impressed you worked a Star Wars reference in there! Always makes me happy
haha glad you enjoyed it
when i was in construction when we remodded an apartment building and was my job to do all the doors,,,new doors in old frames yay,,anyways i built something similiar though much bigger,3 shelves held all my tools for a mobile work station..would just take over an apartment do all my work for the floor out of it,,and your right cheaper to make than buy one..
Brilliant and thanks for the idea.
Cart Attack.....
Hey John Great video and project. I think Cart Vader or Cart Wars would fit nicely.
Good nice 👍
I love Paul McCARTney !!
Ace of Carts.
Magna Carta
Lots of good names already mentioned, I even liked a few.... But, if this third cart has no specific purpose and is purely for a backup, I think Cart-ingency Plan might be a viable option.... 👍🏻👊🏻
That cart 2D2 is a show stopper 😂. Hope you don't mind if I use that? Great video, bud! 👍
I got the free plans! I don’t need it for my small shop but I could use one in the big shop I work at tho! Nice and simple the way I like it lol
Awesome Glenn! hope you enjoy em!
Hey John. I am a newbie at woodworking and one of the most daunting aspects to woodworking is understanding joinery and when/where it is most appropriate. You made a statement toward the beginning of the video regarding why you hate them and how people are using them incorrectly. You mentioned table tops. What are the correct joinery methods? I have seen videos where they use pocket holes and honestly...it gave me confidence that I could build a good dinner table using that joinery. Now I am not sure what to think. I appreciate your honesty and it keeps me coming back for more wisdom for my arsenal.
Well Andy thank you for asking. A panel or table top should be glued up with jointed edges and wood glue in clamps. Pocket holes in material over 3/4 puts all the pressure in the bottom half of the joint and can bow easily. Gluing and clamping straight boards is faster and more effective . And you can reinforce with biscuits or dominos
@@John_Malecki Thank you John for your reply. My wife does not thank you for giving me an excuse to get a biscuit joiner! LOL She will thank you once I get to tackling that project and complete it! Again, many thanks.
@@John_Malecki Everybody has an opinion...that's a given. I respect yours but don't state it as fact. I stopped listening to you at that point, although I watched and liked your cart. Do yourself a favor and don't spend a lot of time pissing off others who don't share your opinion.
I am totally building this. I already downloaded the plans, bought the wood and wheels. Nearly time to start cutting, but I had a question... Why did you add a shelf support? It looks like the bottom of the shelf is screwed into the sides and the sides are supported by the legs. Are the shelf supports members needed for additional reinforcement of the other joinery?
Cart2 D2... I couldn't stop laughing 😂
Cartman has my vote.
3rd Cart from the Sun
Love them. Are you planning on taking orders? By the way, your music choices for your videos are on point.
Nope. you can download the plans tho!
Am I the only one wondering why all of the silver pocket screws seem to be standing proud of the holes when they were screwed in?
I noticed that too.
They have bigger beads on them. I ran out of the armor tool supplied ones
@Bradley Fransen I've had a similar issue where try as I might I couldn't get them to sit beneath the surface. Either they were proud or the angle they were driven at was wrong, either way the head wouldn't clear. That probably made know sense. face palm.
Figured that. He was using up random screws that weren't aren't perfect but won't effect anything.
Ya its a shop cart, so i dont mind if theyre not perfect !
It would not hurt anything if I built it out of 3/4 inch plywood would it? (I have some laying around)
Carts are very useful. Name suggestion "I cart you"
Dolly Carton!
Your screws were green. What colour screws are the best?
Cart 3 PO, Cart-man
Love moving and speed up motion !! 3:50
What gear did u used to make this shot ???
Thank you for speaking truth on pocket holes! I can't stand the over-use by everyone... it's like Kreg gave me money, so I'm going to use them in the most inappropriate ways possible. So frustrating. /rant and love the videos!
Corey Trick maybe it’s just me and it’s been so cold in Ohio and I haven’t thawed out yet lol but why is it inappropriate ? Is it because most people should be using biscuits? I’m just not following
@@mikep3008 Maybe I wasn't clear. John uses them correctly on face-frames. It just seems like a lot of online creators use them for every instance they need to screw something together. As if the old nail and glue is sacrilegious, it's just odd and usually unnecessary.
Corey Trick ok I just wanted to make sure. Yea I do see that with a lot of creators and it seems like it could be more expensive as well.
Figured we were talking same thing. Definitely more expensive too
For anything thicker than 3/4” a pocket hole is not what o suggest for the best and strongest joinery method. Mostly table bases and top construction. I despise seeing it there. Plus I wish more people would try other joints. They’re so much more fun , stronger , and satisfying
Thunder, thunder, Thunder-Cart, hooooo!
Or Cartimus Prime
Tanya Carting 😂🤣
"Bring Out Yinz Dead" cart. Classic Monty Python.
Cart-Zilla , cartwheels !
*Multi Tool Carts* is a good name
Do all wooden beds creak?
Porter Cables pocket hole jig is the best on the market - IMO
I have the Porter Cable one and like it
I didn’t even know PC had a drill usage jig. I just looked it up. Looks solid. Does it adjust the collet to match the material thickness and tell you screw size ?
You only have to set the collet once
When you put material in the jig, it adjusts how deep it goes depending on material thickness
Stoopid easy to use
John Malecki no adjustment needed. You set it once out of the box and it does all sizes. Very robust design. Pricey but the best designed and made big on the market.
that new pocket hole jig looks nice but it can't do the pocket hole super joint. too bad :>) great video John, keep them up.
ah i gotta look up what that is haha
thanks for responding John. it is a handy joint at times. you should take a serious look at it. Just search the phrase on youtube.
haha i see its your own joint, nicely done Russ.
John, where did you get that workbench with the holes in it. That thing looks sweet
I was hoping he'd go over that too, from Instagram I believe it is also from Armor tools, great looking benches with a whole slew of clamp options
Yes they’re from armor tools! Sweet system
They’re armor tool benches. I’m loving them. They’re sweet
Dude where’s my cart
Cart on.
I would call it "Simon & Cartfunkel"
Paul Cart Shop Cop!
These carts look great, thanks for sharing. Just a small criticism, from the video, it looks like every screw you put into those pocket holes got all f-ed up, is that correct? Looks like they got screwed in too far and split the wood, is that because of the screws? Also, cart name..... Kim Cart-dashian?
Armor has some small sauarenhead pocket screws that are 1” for 1/2” plywood. I ran out so the ones you see are another brand with a bigger head. Plus the plywood I had was junk. I would do them in 3/4 if I did it again
How about Cart 4 PO, It will have any visitors you have at the shop baffled for hours, looking for Cart 3
Carty McFly (Back to Future)
we said the same thing!
I'd probably hate pocket holes too if I didn't install them right.
Don't know what's up with that jig, but those types of pocket screws should work fine and end up below the surface. When you using thin material you have to use those short one with the weird head, but I've never had them sit like that before, even in 12mm stock. From the looks of where the screws are sitting up, and where the holes comes out the bottom if you pause at 3:48, it looks like the jig was set too far down. And if was up slightly, the hole would have come out closer to center, there would be more room for the screw to fit into as well.
I simply shouldve used 3/4" Ply i think
@@John_Malecki Don't know ply you have available, but at least for me in Australia, albeit, it is construction ply with a lower quality finish, for a shop cart it's probably not all that important, and nothing a quick sand won't fix.
We have ply available in almost all ODD numbered mm from 3mm. Currently at least I can get 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25mm ply. The 12, 19mm options match with 1/2 and 3/4"
For small project, 12mm is alright, and then for large projects, 19mm(3/4) is good. But there are some inte middle projects where 12mm is too thin, and 19mm (3/4) is too thick. So I like using 15mm for those. 15mm is roughly 5/8 I think.
The Magna Carta
"The Blur" from little rascals
Are the screw heads supposed to be sticking out of the pocket holes like that? 🤔
No. I ran out of the smaller head carts . So I went with what I had which was a bit bigger head and with 1/2” ply they didn’t sink as well
Third Cart from the Sun
Cart of armor
Should be called "This is not a cart, it's a face frame"
“Cart of Gold”
First thing that came to mind was "Carti B", but "Cartman" for sure!
Carty McFly is our front runner!
@@John_Malecki Agh! How did I not think of that?! I retract my previous statement because as a huge Back To The Future fan, my vote goes towards Carty McFly
Since the cart is going to used for the whole shed call it (Skippy the cart) Skippy the kangaroo:)
Cart Smeller
Maybe Bender Cart ?
My write in vote would be Eric Cartman (southpark)
I would have named one carte blanche
Cart3 / PO
Carth Brooks
Ohhh thats a good one!
Carty the One Man Party
Cart 4
A la cart.
So should I expect all of the popular woodworkers to be sponsored by them in the near future?
Sponsored by who?
Cartzilla
Cartmagedon lol
Cart Vanderlay (George's alter ego from Sienfeld)
Napoleon Bonacart
Why not Cartman or Carty McCartface?
I legit hate the carty McCartFace haha i have had several people ask but i just cant hahaha
Thats really handy, but i would suggest to add a second level below.
it has a bottom shelf. you mean another shelf?
Yes John, about 4-5" below top shelf, but of course this is a personal thing, im messy, so another layer if storage directly below reduces clutters on my assembly or work area.
Cartaphilus.
Or Rosebud, just to be different:-).
Cartzilla, Cartallica, The Cartinator
NASCART
Free plans???
Bravecart
name it rollie pollie or rolling with the homies. thanks for the video!

hahahahhaa these are great
Disappointed that Brienne of Cart wasn’t an option.
not gona lie, i sat down for a good while and it crossed my mind. I decided against it cause "tarth and Cart" dont Pun well, it would have to be Carth, and i thought it was a reach haha
(Eric) CARTman 😏
Kwik-E-Cart
Vito Cartleone (The Godfather)
Classic haha
5 Finger Cart Punch
