12 Serious Mistakes People Make When Visiting Blackpool

  • Visiting Blackpool is unique in its own way. It’s just like visiting any other town or city; tourists usually trip during their trip to a place they have not quite studied well. Even after making all the possible findings about their destinations, many tourists may still encounter unwelcome surprises, making a mockery of all their plans and research. These are a result of slight mistakes that could taint their holiday. In this video, however, we’re not talking about slight mistakes. We’re focusing on significant mistakes that can be very consequential. Regardless of the gravity of those mistakes, however, a little more vigilance can make a lot of difference. We will now discuss 12 serious mistakes people make when visiting Blackpool.
    12. Visiting during off-season
It’s always a very serious mistake to visit this time during the off-season when some of its areas appear as if on lockdown. July and August can be good months to visit if you want to enjoy some fun on the beach and paddle in the sea. This is when the temperatures are their highest. You can sunbathe and stay out till evening. June also can be a great month to visit if you don’t mind the slightly cooler weather. But make sure you go only on weekends as weekdays can be boring during this month. September too isn’t bad. Visiting the town outside these months is, oh dear!
    11. Expecting too much of transport services
Tourists from London and other sophisticated cities usually believe that trams, trains, buses, and taxis in Blackpool function similarly to other tourist areas. They're in for a big shock when they find, for example, that there is no Uber in Blackpool. Another rude example is that tramps in the town don't accept contactless payments. When tourists don’t come with enough cash, they might find themselves unable to move as much as they wish. However, most of the town's tourist centers are within trekking distance of each other. If you don't have enough cash, you could do with a bit more trekking.
    10. Not understanding money matters
While credit cards, debit cards, and other contactless payments are allowed in many places, you’re advised to bring along extra cash while visiting Blackpool. Paying for little things, such as ice cream on the Promenade and some games on the pier may not be as easy as using these methods. More so, contactless payment has limits here. Even some tourists who use ATMs during their stay are pleasantly surprised that the only good way is to be charged in GBP. If you choose to be charged in your local currency, you will pay more because it's the ATM provider that will set the exchange rate, which will be higher.
    9. Not planning for pickpockets
Tourist destinations usually attract unscrupulous elements. We have no reason to expect Blackpool to be an exception. This town’s crime rate is a bit higher. Pickpockets are always at their best in Blackpool during the season. It’s illusory to depend on the large police presence for protection. These security agents can’t be everywhere at once. They’re not able to monitor every square inch and every single person in a big crowd. Your wallets might be snatched. You have to keep your belonging safe. Don’t put your wallet in your back pocket. Dress in such a way that will enable you fasten your belonging tightly close to your body.
    8. Not bringing a waterproof jacket
Many tourists often make the mistake of thinking that they’ll not need a waterproof jacket since they’re visiting the town in summer, which can be hot. They often forget that Blackpool is in Lancashire and what we know about this place is that Lancashire Coast is the wettest in England. It regularly gets a thorough soaking and wetness from rain blown in off the Irish Sea. Though most days will be sunny, bright, and clear, having a lightweight waterproof coat is a precaution that’ll do you much good in case the weather behaves unexpectedly. If you don’t have such a jacket, you may plan for only indoor entertainment.

I've lived in Blackpool most of my life. I've never heard of anyone having their pockets picked. All buses, trams and taxis take contactless payments. Booking tickets when booking accommodation? Really? Never heard that one before... I have never met anyone being disappointed with the illuminations. Yes it isn't like a light show in Las Vegas, or Dubai, but that is the charm of the illuminations.

Yeh i dont think you'd need to pre-book attractions at the same time as hotels but I think you can see a difference with the gate price on the day. Love Blackpool, coming down again in September. It's a shame how some people don't like this place as a holiday destination but you can't win them all. I still love the pleasure beach and I'm 31 😃
I have been in Yate's and nearly had my phone nicked when i'd had it on charge - I do think you need to keep an eye on your valuables in the crowds but never felt unsafe. :) I think when you go makes the difference in terms of atmosphere and things to do ❤

I have never before read so much inaccuracy in an article. Lived here 80 years I have never felt threatened. I.have never heard of problems with pick pockets.
Public transport is fine a tramway along the seafront to Fleetwood. Plenty of Banks with cash machines. Parts of Blackpool have become rather rundown but there is a huge rebuilding scheme in progress.

Blackpool's season is a lot longer than June to September.
The Illuminations are fantastic, they start around the 30th August when the 6 miles of the Promenade they run along. is shut to cars so people can ride the lights on all shapes n sizes of bicycles. A lot which are light up. The Illuminations run from September until 1 January but had an extra week in January this year. The international fireworks compilation in September and October is brilliant, so is the Lightpool festival in November and Christmas by the sea in December. And of course the Airshow in August.
Out of season is a good time for locals to enjoy the town when it's not too busy. Blackpool being on the west coast have amazing sunsets all year but unfortunately we do get too much rain. And maybe to much wind but I do love watching the big waves on a good high tide. The starlings are fantastic to watch doing their murmurations at sunset at North Pier. On clear days we do get fantastic views of the Lake District mountains, North Wales and if you're really lucky the Isle of Man.

Yes it has its issues like a lot of other places in the uk but a lot of these videos just concentrate on the negative side giving the place a bad rap . For one thing, if you know where to go there are a lot of other things to do as well eg Stanley park , zoo , tower, sealife centre, sandcastle etc. There are also the very close pretty seaside resorts of st Anne’s , lytham , Cleveleys fleetwood bispham (all administratively part of Blackpool) . Then there’s the tower ,3 piers, pleasure beach , shows , events eg fireworks championships , arcades, beach, vintage trams ,some cosy b and b’s , casinos, novelty shops, tons of cheap lovely pubs / cafes / restaurants / bars etc etc it goes on and on . I even got a ferry over to knott end the other day and had a great day shopping at Freeport at knott end . it’s also close to places like Southport, preston and it’s large city centre and market , morcambe, Lancaster , peak and Lake District . It’s now even open till January with the Christmas area at the front and a new all year round indoor large entertainment complex going to be built at car park near coral island . No other seaside resort offers all this. Most other towns are boring just with a shopping centre and a club and a few bars and a small park yet people from them slag Blackpool off - I stayed in a few for a few days and was bored. Just like all uk a lot of it depends on the weather of course . And even though not as much employment opportunities as in the cities but unlike a lot of other seaside resorts there are still a lot of businesses and retail and some business parks around the area so there are still jobs if your willing to work a bit harder to find them but less than in a city but you’ll still find work but there aren’t as many professional / graduate jobs admittedly but they are still there. What other seaside resort has all this ? Personally I like living here - only thing that really gets me down about the place are the druggies, beggars (who keep asking tourists for money ) and some rundown looking shabby areas especially just behind the front (which is not fully representative of all Blackpool as when you go inwards it looks like any other area in uk and there are some beautiful places and houses such as round Stanley park area ) but the weather can also be windy and bad at times even though Blackpool gets more brighter days that most of the other parts of Lancashire but one big thing is it can go pretty dead out of season what with the winter weather and can be bad especially difficult for the seasonally employed it can be hard to find work . But on the plus side cost of living and houses are lower here than most of uk . If it was as bad as some people make out why is it the most visited holiday resort in the uk ? So I think overall the pros outnumber the cons but of course it depends upon wether you want to concentrate on the positive or negative aspects .

This video offers terrible advice. I live in Blackpool and a lot of this is extremely outdated.
Firstly, trams do accept contactless payments, or you can download your digital ticket on the app.
Secondly, there is PLENTY to do in Blackpool outside of the main season. Most of our attractions remain open midweek in the off-season and this is the best time to visit them as the crowds are a lot lower! We also grave the World Firework Championships in September and October, plus the new Christmas By The Sea event which brings lots of people here during the winter. The theatres are actually at their busiest in November and December, so again, a good time to come and see a show!
    Just seems a bit negative…

good thoughts there. Where you can it's helpful to book ahead as you save lots. Cash is definitely helpful for pop-up stalls and doughnut/ice cream joints. There's also ice cream stalls where having cash is quicker and more beneficial. Can't comment about Blackpool taxis but certainly in Edinburgh most of them do also take cards

take cash - finding a cash machine that doesn't charge you is impossible. and keep your cash safe.
Blackpool transport is fun. and regular. and a day ticket for bus/tram isn't that expensive. great if you have mobility issues as the platforms are ramped and easy to get onto in a wheelchair.
    it's not a city.
no pickpockets, but definitely some shady characters along the golden mile - just be mindful of that.
as for toilets - good luck finding any that aren't 40p per trip (it used to be 5p) some places are free (the piers), but, it's a question of where anywhere else.
it's undergoing massive redevelopment - expect diversions and a lot of construction noise/traffic.
going mid-week is good for those who want to go, but don't like massive crowds.
raincoat?? pfft!! there's always something indoors along the prom/piers. and the usual clothing outlets within easy reach to purchase such an item. it's not like their isn't a primark/poundland in the area!!!
the illuminations are usually on first Friday in September, and are on until the end of January - and there are loads of events on between the start and end along the prom. you can also ride an open top tram during the illuminations from end to end - better than being stuck in a car/bus/coach and moving only a couple of feet per minute. the roads during the illumination season get rammed to the point where it's often better to walk. every year, there's a 'ride the lights' night where cyclists can ride up/down the prom to view the lights - it's an annual organised event.
Hotels are plentiful and not that expensive. and new ones are being built every year. chain hotels will have lifts in for the less abled. there are tons of B&Bs in the side streets.
you didn't mention the massive availability of food - no shortage if you're into the bog-standard fare usually sold.
the arcades are awesome - and some of the attractions in some of them are pretty damned good. a good reason to take a couple of bags of 2p coins. although, there are places to obtain coins - be it a machine, or an actual human. regardless of which, you'll need wet wipes of some description - your fingers will look horrendous after a couple of hours at a coin pusher.
best of all - the rock is made in the town and you can watch it being made - and take home armfuls of it in a whole world of flavours - including 'fish and chips' (I wish I was joking, I'm not!)
as with any other major town - the nightlife can be a little bit 'in yer face' and loud at throwing out time. british drunks tend to go deaf after several pints. and with fast food/chippies being open until very late, if you are in need of a bag of seaside chips to eat along the prom - do it before the pubs/clubs close.
and when you see the access to the beach cordoned off - it's to do with the tide coming in.
the gulls will mug you if you're eating along the prom in the daytime. seriously, they have no fear. seen countless people deprived of food this way. the gulls have NO fear. (seagulls don't exist - they're gulls. there's herring, black backed, lesser-black backed to name but a few. herring gulls are usually found in coastal areas where they've learnt to mug people for food. better yet, don't eat along the prom.)
yes - get ride/admission tickets in advance as it's cheaper. the more ahead you book, the cheaper it is.
plenty of channels on youtube highlighting events and places to go/see in Blackpool.

At least the name got it all right .
    Black sand beaches,black water,black weather,very dark and grimm environment,very dark job prospects,etc,etc....
A very Depressing place to live.
60 days a year for a little bit of "fun", but the other 300 are a struggle.
Ive been there for 3 months, and was more than enough to me.
Over there your Patience and good Manners are tested to the limits everyday at any hour and any place .
You have to stand your ground and play along otherwise those packs of Junkies will eat you alive and spit out.
Not a single nice memory in 3 months over there.
    See you Blackpool,stay high.

Reasons 1 to 12 are all the same the problem is don’t go to Blackpool that was your problem horrible dirty old hole. Nothing to do. Very few attractions outside of the pleasure. Beach loads of derelict buildings falling down drug problem drink problem boarded up shops literally one straight back off the seafront a lot of it is completely derelict a lot of money investing in it by the local council and a lot of the landlords order to be ashamed of themselves how they leave the quality of the buildings when boarded up and for God sake don’t even go anywhere near the place after dark because it is not safe especially if you’re not street savvy or street smart

Been many times over the years since the 70s and yes its run down and neglected like a lot of uk seaside towns but never experienced most of this.
The only accurate one is the weather but that's the uk for you!
