    Awesome brah! I'm 63 now, born and raised on Oahu in the country. Been surfing since I was 5 years old. Been diving spearfishing and fishing my whole life in the Islands. I've been watching you from when you were really young surfing, and it's been amazing to watch what you have accomplished as a surfer and excellent waterman!!!!!! I remember a long time ago, I was out in the country visiting from the Big isle where I had moved to in the late 70's and it was in between swells so I was doing a shore dive out off yards. When I was coming back in to the beach I saw you getting in the water to go spearfishing, and I was so stoked to see that you were doing that as well as surfing!!!! This was a long time ago, and you were still pretty young. I just remember saying to myself "all right he's into freedive spearfishing too"!!!! Now you are one of the heaviest pipe surfers and a big wave surfer that is at the top of the world's best!!!!! I'm so stoked to see how far you've come with being a true Hawaiian waterman!!!! I mean going left at big mea!!??!!!! Just an absolute charger!!!! Like you my entire life was focused on surfing pipe, Backdoor in particular. I'm so blessed I was enjoying it with so few other surfers and made sure I never missed the best days each winter
    But, my love for diving, freedive spearfishing and deep sea fishing were also an equal focus of my love for the ocean, eventually I moved to the big island and began commercial fishing and had my dream boat custom built for me
    I had the 9th Force 30 out of the mold, and had a flybridge diesel engine with straight shaft set up
    I.fished the rough water areas off the big island and usually went out on 4-5 day and night long fishing trips!!! I never was interested in competition surfing, strictly underground! Tube riding was just my favorite thing in the world!!!! I grew up with the Lopez family and the boys from way back in the days when sugar cane fields covered so much of the islands!!!! My hats off to you!!! You have my total respect and I just am really stoked to see your accomplishments in both surfing and freedive spearfishing!!!!! I just didn't make money surfing, though it was the best!!!! But commercial fishing, especially for big gorilla ahi was an incredible rush, challenge and I supported my family very well from.it!!
    Aloha D.L.

    You have no idea how much I get out of every vid you put out. I remember reading Hawai'i skin diver pieces a decade ago of you cam, g.r. etc. And the inspiration and passion it all instilled in me. You my friend are a legend I hope to one day hunt with

    @mattwarning8699 Před 3 lety

    Very nice fish and I might try your crack pipe flasher. I'm curious why you aren't using a more standard float line. I'm sure this packs a lot smaller, but it seems more likely to present a tangle problem.

    • @strikemissions
      @strikemissions  Před 3 lety

      Thanks. It’s because those larger diameter float lines create a ton of drag when I’m diving in strong currents or strong winds (drags the float putting more angle in the line). I burn a lot more energy with those especially when diving deep for Dogtooth. 🤙🏼

    • @Tres03
      @Tres03 Před 3 lety

      Mark Healey any specific reason you put the bungee section with the float instead of attached to the mono? When I bought my gannet hybrid bungee/ tag line he said you want the bungee closest to the fish

  • @Marco15499
    @Marco15499 Před 3 lety

    Nice video buddy! You should find a way to attach your gun to your belt (or somewhere else) when you are using it as breakaway to avoid loosing it. Great fish!

  • @Tohei08
    @Tohei08 Před 3 lety

    Mark, why do you put the bungee after the hard line? Wouldn't it be better to have the bungee closest to the shooting line in case the fish takes another run?

    • @strikemissions
      @strikemissions  Před 3 lety +2

      Good question. I put the bungee closest to the float for two reasons. 1. The hard line is a smaller diameter, so it’s less drag when diving in current which equals better bottom time. 2. When the sharks frenzy and take a fish they start doing weird stuff like chewing on your tag line sometimes. If your bungee even gets a nick in it, it will break next time it gets stretched hard. 🤙🏼

  • @goyo2897
    @goyo2897 Před rokem

    It seems that wahoo sometimes become "competitive" when you go to retrieve your flasher. They will head right for it at the same time. Fish FOMO I guess... The first time that happened to me, I almost soiled my wetsuit. He was right there when I looked up! (No, I didn't get him; I choked!)
